“I strongly believe in the possibility of connecting with people from other cultures and creating an environment in which the little things we do throughout or daily lives positively affect the lives of people around the world. Even in something as seemingly inconsequential as our choice of skin care, it’s about a consciousness of the decisions we make every day.” - Katharine Phillips L’Heureux, Founder of Kahina - Giving Beauty
Jasmine Simone here! I love essential oils - they are so nurturing to my skin and have done wonders for scarring, dryness and other skin issues I have had in the past. Recently I discovered the wonders of Argan oil. So what exactly is argan oil you may be wondering? Only found in a few countries, Morocco being the main one, the argan tree oil is revered for it’s numerous nutritive, cosmetic, and medicinal properties. It is pressed from the seeds of the argan tree fruit and has been used for cooking and cosmetics for centuries before modern times (dating back to before the Phonecians.) Presently, argan trees are near extinction due to severe drought seasons and over use for of the trees for wood over the past 50 years. They are now a protected species by UNESCO and must be harvested sustainably to preserve these ancient tress that can live up to 200 years.
Fortunately, the Kahina - Giving Beauty brand adheres to this standard of environmentally-conscious processing. L’Heureux chose the name Kahina as an homage to the Berber queen (Berbers are the indigenous people in North Africa) and prophetess who reigned in Morocco circa 700 CE and “a heroine to the Berber women, Kahina represents empowerment and vision for women worldwide.” And that is exactly what founder, Katherine Phillips L’Heureux, was inspired to do when she created this line of products after a visit to Morocco brought her into the world of Berber women, who subsequently revealed to her the amazing, versatile properties of argan oil. Kahina works with the local women to provide them with a viable and sustainable way to make a living which subsequently improves their way of life. Taking it a step further, Kahina also sources rare essential ingredients from women’s cooperatives around the world, and donates 25% of their profits to support initiatives that improve the lives of impoverished women around the world.
It's Jeanasina's Body Beautiful Wednesday! If you want to walk into a room and shout, “Who wants to run their hands in my silky hair right now?” read on...
On January 19th of this year, one of our best storyteller reviewers, SweetAssGal, let you know from the get-go that she was a major fan of Zakia's Argan Oil! All of the reviewers actually had oodles of positive things to say about this amazing oil and what it can do! I had written to the other main writers asking any of them to please send me their oil if they didn't like it. NOBODY was willing to give up their new-found best friend, Zakia's Argan Oil! But this oil is magic in a bottle and when you possess magic you definitely don't want to give it up!
As our story continues, I was sitting one day and mindlessly popping into my mouth nuggets of chocolate out of a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips. I was using the chips to fulfill the need for pleasurable satisfaction on some level within me. I was actually compelled to set the bag of chocolate chips down when I opened a package from Meg that day and spotted a bottle that said Zakia's Argan Oil on it! I reached into the package and immediately clutched the Argan Oil bottle to my chest and ran around the house looking for a safe place to hide my new Argan Oil product! I had learned that if anything says the words “Zakia's Morocco Argan Oil” on it, it's a valuable commodity and one which I would not willingly give up! I did not want any Moroccan bandits to invade my home and steal my new treasure so I had to hide quickly.
Megken here - Do you have certain songs that remind you of a time in your life? When I hear "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow I can't help but think of the first time I went to sleep-away camp. Particularly, the day I commented on the sunbathing girls being so shiny (it was because they were covering themselves in baby oil) I was made fun of the rest of the summer. I just asked a question, "Why are they shiny?".
Am I the only one who has strong memories that get triggered by scent? I recently tried a shampoo called Grandpa's Wonder Pine Tar. Now there's nothing in a name "Grandpa's Wonder Pine Tar Shampoo" thatscreams "hip and cool" like, Thermasilk, Bodacious, Infusium 23, Salon Selective, Finesse or that sound exotic like Garnier Fructis Shampoo.
Goddess Granny here on this Superbowl Sunday: I "like" football but have no emotional connection to either team this year so may the best one win and hope it's a helluva' game! Most girls I know are either out shopping, at Zumba class, or simply finding some other out of the house way to amuse themselves while our men-folk consume mass quantities of beer, chicken wings and pizza while burping loudly and swearing/throwing cans at the TV! I also know a few women (waves to a couple of her sisters...) who will be sitting right there with and more power to 'ya'! :)
Hello ladies! Another beautiful day here at megsmakeup.com and it's about to become an even more beautiful day for three very lucky Megheads! This is Eleni, ready to announce the winners of the Profound Beauty Limited Edition Styling Kit competition! As if you don't already know... I'm sure you have all counted the votes - and at least you know we're not playing favorites! Your fellow Megheads picked the best stories, gave them a vote and now we have three women that are about to have significantly better hair. Because that's the only thing we wanted for you: Better Hair.
Are you ready?
*drumroll*
The Arctic Straight Hair Kit goes to... Erica! The Tropical Curl Hair Kit goes to... rubysbeauty! And the Desert Volume Hair Kit goes to... ilovemakeup!
Congratulations!
You really did an amazing job sharing your hair horror stories with us - and at least now, whenever you share your hair horror story in the future you can add a happy ending to it in the name of Profound Beauty!
Jasmine Simone here! Like most humans, I realize that all my life I seem to be constantly in search of... something. From the mundane to the life changing: the stunning party dress, the most flattering beauty products, the healthiest (yet still mouth-watering) food recipes, lasting friendships, fulfilling community outreach, the best job, the perfect guy... you get the idea. This leads me to wear many hats every day - fashion buyer, product tester, party girl, executive, volunteer, chef, art collector and so on.
Now I will admit that I can get pretty enthusiastic and maybe a bit more overjoyed than the average person when I find an amazing new beauty product. If I find a great new conditioner or a delicious new eye shadow I am sure to espouse my happiness and recommendation to all of my friends and family. There are some companies who have in me a wonderfully satisfied brand-ambassador-customer generating new business for them everyday (hint, hint... I'm kinda cute too... ha!) The good news is that many times I come across the exact product for me and end my search - Natural Dentist toothpaste and Dr. Bronner's Peppermint body wash to name a couple; I'll use them forever as long as the products don't get discontinued (you'd be surprised how many items I have loved and then find out the brand is getting the axe!)
I am now going to let you in on my tedious yet often times rewarding exploration. Up first: my search of the perfect hair care treatment. I have been relaxing my hair since I old enough to - which was 13 years old according to my mom. I have tried great hair relaxers and horrible ones and everything in between with accompanying hair dressers that run the same gambit. When dealing with such a delicate and potentially damaging process, I advocate having both a top-notch and hair dresser and product when hitting the salon though the chemical process bears a bit more weight in my decision when choosing where to get my services done.
Good evening ladies, Eleni here! You've all been so good with our contests! It's one of the things we all love about megsmakeup, how responsive you all are and how wonderful it feels to be part of a community. You really amazed us with the hair disaster stories you shared and we kept reading them and laughing SO much, you don't even wanna know. It must be pretty hard for you to share a "how I got bold" story knowing that there are a few hundreds of women out there that are going to laugh their asses off. But you still shared and that's very brave of you and that's why we love you! So, to freshen up your memory, you were competing for three amazing Profound Beauty Limited Edition Styling Kits. This is pretty huge - and we want to be fair, so once again, we'll let YOU decide you wrote the best story!
There are three different categories, Arctic Straight, Tropical Curl and Desert Volume and you get to pick one winner for each category! Pick the story you liked the most, or the person that you think deserves the the kit the most! Or just play favorites and vote for your friend. We won't judge! You'll have enough time to decide, we set the deadline for Sunday January 31st at noon, so there is one whole week of voting!
Jasmine Simone here! When I was a little girl I used to HATE having my hair done. My thick tight curs fluffed out into a big afro puff all over my head and it definitely took skill to tame it. I remember countless nights of crying as my mom yanked and pulled my hair into submission - tying down the braids around my head with rubber bands and barrettes; or artfully placing cornrows in various maze-like styles; or the dreaded 3-hour sessions in the kitchen with the hot pressing comb, the smell of burnt hair wafting through the house.
Needless to say, I wanted the long, flowing, untangled hair like the girls I saw on TV. Though a girl could only dream. However, around age 11 I began to see other beautiful girls of color in the media - Brandy, Beyonce, SWV- that created this type of long flowing hair for themselves by braiding fake hair into theirs; I became obsessed with getting some for myself. For about 3 years, I constantly wore fake hair, getting it braided into different styles using different colors and textures that afforded me long hair, sometimes left loose and wavy. The best part was that it gave me a reprieve from the pain of styling my natural thick, afro curls in 3-month long intervals. I was in heaven.
BabyLove here! I'm so sorry I missed you all last week, but I'm on vacation in Florida trying to get a break from the 30 degree weather in Boston. It's been 75 all week, and I'm loving every second of this before returning to the miserable northern winter that awaits me. Our next topic! While not as glamorous as ice cream smelling shampoo, we must talk about the unpleasant topic of head lice. I'm 28 years old (just shy of 29), and I'm wondering: how many of you ladies remember lining up in grade school and heading down to the nurse's office for a head lice check? It was always the most horrifying day at school, especially for the poor kids who had it, and I remember thinking, even at 10, that there had to have been a more discreet way to handle such an embarrassing situation. It was like the college "walk of shame." I never had head lice, but I had friends who did and were forced to stay out of school until their head was "cleared." There's no denying it, head lice is super gross. However, it's not just something that "dirty" kids get, and thankfully, there are ways to prevent it. And yes, for all of you Megheads who must know, while I never had head lice, I have had to do the "walk of shame." As I was doing my product research for megsmakeup.com, I knew that I had to get my hands on some preventative head lice products. Circle of Friends, a fantastic company with great children's bath and body products, sent me samples of their preventative head lice shampoo and leave-in conditioner. The shampoo and conditioner are gentle enough to be used everyday, or just when an outbreak hits your town.
