What is the trick to cleaning up your at-home manicure?

What is the easiest way to clean up that extra nail polish that gets on the skin around the finger nail? I am horrible at just painting my nails and not the skin too. I have a Sally Hansen Manicure Clean Up Pen that works so-so, but it has to be used before the polish dries, which means, paint one nail, clean it, paint another one, clean it. And it really drags out the whole process. Plus, it doesn't really do that great of a job. I know the trick about painting your nails, then taking a shower or bath and the extra usually comes off, but is there an even faster way that doesn't involve taking a shower? :)

What I do is paint my nails at night and then wait till they dry and go to bed. When I shower in the morning the dried bits around the edges fall off (without even pulling). This doesn't add extra time for me, as I shower in the morning anyway. The only extra time there is, is the 10 min painting my nails at night once or twice a week. Another option is getting a cotton bud (or q-tip) and dipping it into some nail polish remover and going around the outside of your nails. Its like the pen that you use but can be used on wet or dried polish. The only other option is to practice and your skills at painting your nails will improve.
Like the Q-tip idea, thanks!

Anybody else have something different they do to fix your messy manicure?

I use BBW one minute manicure (or maybe it's called 60 second manicure), it's an oil based scrub that you rub into your hands and nail-beds, and it takes off all the extra polish and the dry skin, and it makes your hands look about 10 years younger, it's like a little miracle in a jar.
OOO I like this idea! I love BBW, I live 5 minutes away from their outlet store, I'm going to see if they have this!

Yea, I dip a q-tip in nail polish removal.

Orangewood stick dipped in remover, it is a touch more accurate than a q-tip
Okay, I'm out of the loop here...what is BBW?:-)
bath and body works :)

I wrap just a tiny bit of cotton wool around the tip of an orange wood stick and dip it in nail polish remover. I've heard that putting cuticle oil on your cuticles before painting works too, I've never tried it though and I'd worry that excess oil would get on the nail bed and cause the polish to peel off.
I just try to be really careful when applying, and not applying too close to the cuticle and skin (although I used to be obsessive about covering every last millimeter of nail). Cuticle sticks are good, or even just some bits of thick cardstock!

Oh thank you Rubysbeauty. I can't understand why that didn't make sense to me when I read it. That hand scrub sounds like something good. BBW has the very best line of aromatherapy "Orange Ginger". Pure heaven. One of those rich scents that make you instantly happy. But, back to your question on cuticle clean-up, this works for me...(after your nailpolish has dried) Get a Q-tip and take some of the cotton off. Dip it in nail polish remover and rub it over your cuticles. Good Luck!
