Very dissapointed with MAC makeup artsts
My second post today! So, I've heard a lot of people rave about MAC makeup, and since I've always struggled to find the right shade with the right amount of coverage I figured I'd try it. I don't have a MAC store where I live so while my fiance and I were visiting some friends who live about 8 hours away my girlfriends and I went to the mall to do some shopping. I stopped in at the MAC counter in The Bay and told them all about my skin (oily, acne-prone, in need of full coverage) and they thought the best bet for me would be the Studio Fix Fluid. So they sat me down and tried different shades on me, told me they found the perfect one. I paid for it and went on my merry way.Later when I got back from the trip and we were back home I was wearing the foundation and I noticed that the colour definitely did not match. It was way too orange for my skin. I was pretty dissapointed because from what I hear these MAC makeup artists actually get trained in this kind of thing, and I thought if anyone would be able to help me find my shade, it would be someone like that!
I also didn't like how cakey the makeup was. I've switched to mineral makeup and am currently trying to find my perfect shade from Everyday Minerals.
Has anyone else had a bad experience at a MAC counter?

It sounds like you may be hard to match when it comes to foundation. I can relate as I find myself in the same category. There was a time when I had tried almost every foundation line at Nordstrom and while many of them were ok . . . I never fell in love. Also, many times in department stores, they have "funny light" it looks great inside the store and then when you get out in the natural light it looks VERY DIFFERENT! The "folks" at the Mac counter may or may not be at fault. For me, mineral foundation helps my troubled skin and I do not have serious issues with matching or having a ugly line on my face.I plan to try Everyday Minerals myself as soon as I use up some product.
I have to say that I've always had good experiences with the people at MAC, both in the free-standing stores and the counters at Nordstrom, but it has certainly happened to me with other lines! Most notably, Estee Lauder, many years ago, the counter rep. sold me all this expensive stuff -- I'd had a bad day, I think she saw me coming -- and NONE if it was right for my skin type, color, anything! But for some reason in the store, it looked good.
I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. Mac can be hit or miss. Their foundation matches my skin beautifully, however I can't stand the formula. I have the Select SPF foundation, and I feel that it settles into my fine lines and wrinkles, yuck! My color is hard to match, so I really prefer tinted moisturizers, Bobbi Brown makes a great one. One thing you should always do when buying foundation it to check the color out in day light, and make sure it doesn't oxidize after a few hours.
I have had bad experiences there too. They can never match my skin tone (3 artists told me three different shades for me) while I was able to match it right there in front of them in about 20 seconds. Also, they often seem to have a very stuck up attitude. I always wanna be like...."uh yah sure you work for MAC but you're still just a makeup artist, not a astronaut so get over yourself!" I HATE studio fix and if you told them you are acne and oil prone, they should have never suggested it to you!
yeah everyone takes it a little too far when it comes to MAC. just today I went to buy a limited edition brush, i already knew what I wanted. Can you believe she had noo idea what i was talking about! it look the store 20 minutes to finally know what i was talking about and find it somewhere in the back. But then, there are other times when they have got everything right and dandy. LOL. so i guess it depends on which store you go to and who you get.
I really think that a lot of MAC makeup artists are more interested in making a sale than actually giving you good advice. Before purchasing a full size foundation from any brand I always make sure I get a sample first. If they can't give me a sample, then I won't even consider purchasing from them. Foundation is one of those things that you HAVE to try out yourself to really know if it's a good match for you. When it comes to MAC foundations I have to say I'm not much of a fan. I have a few different shades of Face and Body in my kit but that's it. I used to like their Studio Sculpt foundation but it made me break out - luckily I never bought a full size of that, just got a sample. :PGood luck with Everyday Minerals, I like their foundation! It feels great.
I think MAC's stuff is good, but a little overrated. They have a wide range of foundation colors and eyeshadow colors it seems, and some good pre-makeup stuff... However, I've heard on other forums that MAC foundation is notorious for "oxidizing", or becoming orange after it's on your skin for awhile. That sounds like what happened to you--it might have looked right at first, but oxidized. Unfortunatley, I *think* that's a problem with the foundation that can't be fixed... When my skin was oily (before Accutane), it seemed like a lot of foundations turned orange on me... maybe it has to do with oily skin?Makeupper--I went to MAC to get matched to a foundation and even though I'm acne prone, they set me up with Studio Sculpt. I walked out with it on my face and got a cyst a day later. Maybe unrelated, maybe not? In any case, Studio Sculpt has dimethicone in it, which is also in Smashbox Photo Finish primer. SPF primer DEFINITELY did break me out, so I wouldn't recommend it to acne-prone ladies, and I think I'll return/exchange my Studio Sculpt next time I'm at a MAC counter (I haven't even opened it b/c I'm scared of breaking out).So overall, I'm kind of disappointed in my MAC experience too :( I'm maybe going to just try exchanging it for a different MAC foundation but I don't want to be disappointed again!

bluedevilkitty - Pretty much every single person I know has broken out from Studio Sculpt foundation. I quite like the concealer at the moment, but the foundation is a definite no no. And that's weird because I use the SPF primer and it hasn't made me break out.. Very strange!I have to say I'm quite often disappointed with MAC MUAs, the attitudes some of them have are quite appalling, why would anyone wanna buy anything off someone who is snobby and unhelpful? In saying that I have come across a few who actually knew what they were talking about and were very friendly. :)
I find it's very hard to get a exact match for my skin. I have learned that it is always best to get a sample first. That way if you go home you have a few days to experiment. I always know in the first day or two if I like a product or not. I also find that it really depends who you get at the Mac counter. If I find that one has attitude,I will tend to wait for another one. Another problem I have encountered there is because the makeup is spread all over the place, I have stood there and waited a great length of time to be helped. This really bugs me as time is of value especially when you want to get in and get out. Artcandy

I got turned on to the best product that I never would have found on my own from a MAC artist, but agree that they usually aren't so helpful. I was using MAC Carbon eye shadow for liner. I would dip my eye liner brush in water, but the liner would not stay in place and I would end up with black smudges under my eyes. They have a product called "Fix". It looks like water in a pump bottle, but it has some kind of magic glue (Okay, not glue, but I'm not a chemist and have no idea what the ingredients are) in it that makes the Carbon glide on flawlessly as eye liner. It allows you to create a fine line that doesn't move or smudge at all. You don't need to use much shadow, so the eye shadow pot takes forever to use up, unlike eye pencils which get shorter every time you sharpen them. You can also use Fix to lightly spray on your face to set your foundation or freshen it up. It is about $14, but well worth it. I love MAC since they offer the PPID 30% discount for make-up artists, hairdressers, models and actresses.
It really is a struggle to get a perfect foundation match. MAC's Studio Fix Fluid really is a heavy foundation and can get cakey. I suggest when you get your foundation matched again that you go out under natural sunlight and see whether the foundation really matches because indoor lighting can be very tricky.
New bad experience at MAC: went yesterday to the MAC counter at Nordstrom to exchange my unopened Studio Sculpt foundation for something without dimethicone in it. (I've heard it's the dimethicone in Smashbox Photo Finish primer that breaks people out, and Smashbox PFP definitely broke me out, so I'm avoiding dimethicone like the plague. My acne prone skin is having a hard enough time without me putting comedogenic ingredients on it! My skin is not usually sensitive to anything either....) (I've also heard reports of MAC Studio Sculpt breaking people out). Unfortunately ALL of the MAC foundations have dimethicone in it. So i'm pretty upset about that, because I have a perfect color match, but I'm not going to risk having a breakout over it. Additionally, Fix+ has dimethicone in it. A gal on another board said that for her, it depends on the amount of dimethicone in a product whether it'll break her out or not, but I'd rather not go through the trial and error... After waiting around forever because they didn't have enough staff....I decided to get 2 eyeliners instead, Macroviolet and Sweet sage. Well they were out of Sweet sage. So the saleslady suggested a cream eyeshadow almost identical to sweet sage. I said, alright that's fine. Guess what? Out of stock too. Then I went through their other cream shadows and picked another color. Out of stock. I was getting pretty frustrated (not at the saleslady, but at whoever at that MAC counter was in charge of inventory), and picked a bright blue green cream shadow that I'd use as a liner. It was the LAST ONE in stock. Thank goodness. So I'm not totally happy with my exchange (I want Sweet sage DESPERATELY), but at least I got that foundation off my hands.Sorry that's so long... but man, I don't know if I'll ever go to a MAC counter again. Maybe I'll just check out the products myself, sans the help of a MAC employee, and order them online. It was ridiculous.

Hey Bluedevilkitty- There are a couple things that go on at Nordstrom when it comes to inventory. (This is how it was explained to me a while ago.) One, they are only allowed to have a certain dollar amount per store. (So, if they are saddled with some dud product that does not move they are stuck and it is hard for them to replenish.) Two, in the past they have pressured me to pay for the product now and have it shipped from another store (if it is around anywhere.) This option is fine but, you do not get instant gratification but, the girl that is helping you does get credit for the sale.
A couple of things,I've used MAC since I had to go over into Canada to buy it from NY!!!: I suggest getting on the email list for MAC...that way you are always first to know about the new colors, promotions, and details of what they are offering. The site is amazing...you can also "ask an artist" online and they are awesome in their suggestions if you have a clue as to what you'd like to look like...I usually make a "wish list" and/or print out a "look",go to the store to see what's shakin' there with the colors "in reality" and then order the colors I love online.I usually buy a brush or something because it's only fair to the in-store people.Usually there is free shipping.I find the stand-alone MAC stores to have the most amazing artists: the ones at Nordy's and other locations seem to focus a LOT on "bridal parties" who walk in and want a makeover and I've only had one artist who was truly gifted at our Nordys. They are spread thin in the department stores. They also really work their "magic" if you print out a "look" online from the current collection because then they modify it to suit YOU! I let them get very creative on me (it washes off,LOL!) and I always lean a new trick or tip! You cannot go into a MAC store and say "I want to look natural" if you are really expecting them to show you much that's fresh,I simply don't think that's their "area of expertise!" Go have lashes applied, buy the lashes and be amazed! MAC foundations: horrible for anyone who breaks out, myself included.I have had a Studio Fix powder compact on hand since dinasours roamed the earth because in a hurry, nothing else will cover and make me pretty faster and yes, usually I pay for it with a bump or two,LOL! The stuff is amazing though...the liquids are all very chalky to me and in photographs, look horrible.Stay clear of them if you have any issues and invest in the "fun stuff" and amazing colors they do so well instead! The line was originally for "artists" so to my way of thinking,it's where I go for color and style and not the "best basics..."
Thanks for the explanation, hao! At the mall I went to, it's not very busy, so they might be stuck with a lot of duds... Although it does seem odd that they were out of stock of THREE products that I wanted! And the sales lady wasn't helpful enough that I'd go out of my way to make sure she got credit for the sale...

Part of the problem (besides maybe they just don';t know how to properly match a foundation!) may be the lighting. The weird combination of fluorescent and incandescent lighting in department stores is no match for natural light.Always have them pick three shades that are really close to your skin color. Put them in vertical strips on your jawline, towards the back where your face begings to turn into your neck. Then take a q-tip and make a horizontal stripe THROUGH the vertical stripe. If there's a stripe that you literally CAN'T see anymore --- that's the shade you want. You can't see it because it's your perfect match!

i had a similar problem with mac. me and one of my friends went to the mac counter at our mall and sat down to find a matching eye shadow for a prom dress. i had planned on buying a few items after getting my makeup done anyway, but when i told the girl what i wanted, i felt like she didnt listen to a thing i said. when i got there i told her that my dress was turquoise and she put emerald green eye shadow on me! what has happened to our talented makeup artists??? so anyway, i ended up going to ulta and getting help there. and i will never go anywhere else
<3 Samantha
i'm also very hard to match, at the Mac store or inside of Nordstrom the colors always look perfect when i see it there, but when i get home it's different usually have a orange yellow tinge, when i go there i ask i know ask for samples and have still not found the perfect match with their liquid foundations
Someone mentioned the MAC Pro discount.. I think it really sucks that makeup artists (and I'm sure the others eligible for this) have to pay for it. No other cosmetic company I've come across insist that you pay a fee in order to qualify for their industry discount. I have to admit that I feel more than a little silly paying $70NZD for my MAC Pro card. :(I probably sound like I'm hating on MAC and I probably am a little. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE a lot of their products but I'm finding out the hard way that there are much higher quality brands available out there.
Wow sounds like I'm not the only one who's had a bad experience with MAC. I too found the girls there very snobby, the only one who wasn't was a guy. They also seemed to really think they were the hottest thing on earth! I am happy with Everyday Minerals though, my skin feels so much better with the makeup on!
I believe you're talking about fix+. Have you tried the mixing medium, even a home made one?
I used to hate MAC staff. They were so full of them selves that it almost hurt. But Sephora people are the same, MUFE are even worse.About your foundation: foundations that have some degree of powder or are powder based do tend to get orangey and yes, MAC has a hard time matching people's foundations most of the time. In my 1st time there, I got matched as an NC30 and I had to wear the powder I got as a bronzer (can you tell how dark it was for me?). The same happened with my MUFE HD foundation. They wanted to give me a 140, I insisted that it was too dark and the girl, unwillingly, ended up selling what I insisted in getting, a 130 that it's still WAAAAY too dark for me.
I know exactly what you mean! I personally have been always slightly intimidated by the MAC makeup ladies - at least at my store, they have SO much makeup that usually looks somewhat caked on - definitely not the look that I'm going for. To make it worse, especially when I was younger and just poking into makeup, they would often ignore me for other customers who I guess looked like they would spend more money! The one time I asked them to suggest a lip color that was "my lips, but better", the MAC makeup artist gave me a really, really dark plum color that made me look slightly gothic. NOT my style at all. When I said I didn't want to get it, she gave me sort of a condescending look, so I left. I haven't been back to a MAC store since. :\ Always just walk by. In any case, I think their products are overrated.
xoxo
Sweetxsoul, I think the same thing. They definitely do look like they wear too much makeup. I mean I understand they are makeup artists but come on -- black mascara, black eyeliner and heavy black/charcoal eyeshadow in the middle of a day when you're at work? Subtlety is sometimes the key, in my opinion!
I had bad expieriences with MAC as well, I never got the right color and they were USUALLY snobbish and hateful!!
I probably look like your snobbish MAC mua, lol;-) (mentioning the black eyeliner, shadow...EVERY day, day AND night, haha). But well, I think they are indeed a bit unfriendly. Thinking "we're better than you, we're MAKEUP-ARTISTS", or something like that. They don't have to wonder if people are afraid to ask or just check the colors out, as some of them already stare you down right when you're walking towards the counter (in a dept. store like Macy's, e.g.). Makes me feel very uncomfortable, but I'm addicted to their eyeshadows. Sometimes I do order online, just to not have to go through the hassle;-).
Make up your beauty-full mind...www.myspace.com/blackdivaworld
Yeah my friend is like that too and she is addicted to MAC and Sephora. There's a new Sephora store at the mall in this city I visit so next time I'm down there I'm checking it out! I hope they're friendlier there!
My friend had a bad experience at the counter stores in Nordstrom. My friend ended up looked trashy. The foundation was too cakey and she looked washed out. yuck.
I tried their foundation for awhile and the same thing. Everything they gave me was too dark and too pink. I also stopped going because there was this REALLY annoying girl that worked at the counter in the mall. I went in there once because I just felt like buying an eyeshadow that day. She started asking me what colors I had so I said well I have one like this one and I pointed and she goes *oooo pretty!* and this one *Pretty!* and this one *PRETTY!* and she was just one of those people that make me what to punch something. And EVERYTIME I walked my Mac she would be in there so I didn't DARE go in!
A funny MAC story - I was chatting with one of the make-up artists and I told him his bracelet was really nice. He FLIPPED out and told me not to even think of flirting with him, he was gay and in a long-term relationship, and he was sorry to have misled me.I am ashamed to say I laughed uproariously. He didn't like that very much either, so I'm sure that's why he gave me a really wrong foundation color.I have never been properly matched at MAC anyway - every foundation they've given me has been too dark, too orange, too colorful. Plus the foundation sinks into and pools in my pores - disgusting!!I do love their lipsticks though.
I generally go into MAC wearing trackpants and not looking my greatest. If I do this they then generally leave me alone!! Otherwise, my experience is that they follow you around trying to get you to buy more products!I did have a good experience with my foundation matching at MAC, though.
LOL... MAC and other department stores usually ignore me because most of the times i go there i'm just out of school and have barely any makeup on.. bunch of snobs !.. The one SA who was sooo nice was a woman at one of the counter in shoppers drugmart.. i looked at the same concealer like 3 times and didn't get it because it was $29 and i couldn't spend that then lol.. each time she was so nice. That's how SA's should be.. no pressure. If i want HE i just buy online.
I hate when i first walk up to the mac counter and an assistant jumps on you before you pick up your first product to swipe. I like to swatch like crazy and i hate it when the ma is literally standing in front of you. Leave me and my shadows alone, already. When i went a few weeks ago when the ccc came out, an older ma managed to insult my sister my calling her my mother when she is only 9 years older than me. The atmosphere was really uncomfortable (my sis was shooting her evils) and she followed us to the next counter when most people would have left. I asked her if they had the 222 in stock and she didn't have a clue what that was and i had to describe it to her. If this was my first visit to mac, it prob would have been my last too.
I had a similar experience a few years ago. I went to MAC and told them I wanted good coverage cause at the time I was breaking out a lot. They also gave me studio fix and I went on my way. For me personally the studio fix was too much. I did end up using it for a while, but when I saw pictures of myself I switched. I also found that they always put way more makeup on me than I'm comfortable with. I do wear a lot of makeup, but I don't think it ever really looks like I'm wearing a lot. When I left that counter it was pretty obvious that I had a couple of thick layers of makeup on. I am also in the process of finding the right color for me with everyday minerals. I ordered the sample kit along with a few other colors just to make sure I got it right. So far I actually feel like 2 or 3 of the colors match me pretty well? There is no sunlight in my bathroom where I apply my makeup, so my next step is to apply it in sunlight to see if I can find my exact shade.
saran5287 - I can wear 2 different shades from Everyday Minerals too. They look totally different in the pot, but on my face they both look quite nice. I think a lot of women are in-between shades so they can wear more than one and still look like it matches.
BlueDevilKitty- there are probably understaffed because MAC is on a hiring freeze that doesn't end until October! Dumb...I know. Maybe they went over budget on training or something...
There are many factors that could be a problem : The light could've been to bright. Or ( and this is from experience ) the counter did not employ a MAC trained makeup artist and she did not know the products well enough. I've seen this happen before and this is why i always go to the stores and not counters.
My Derm says that MAC foundation is really bad for your skin and it clogs your pores. I agree that the MAC ppl have way too much makeup on boys and girls.
Letitahttp://letitaslogic.blogspot.com/
I dont know if mac does this but when I went to the estee lauder counter to find a foundation match the chick sat me down did the usual and founf a shade for me.she gave me a little sample tube with my shade squirted in it to take homewell i put it on the next morning and OMG it was soooo green!!!! I looked sick!lol i thre away the samples and oh well.IM also trying to find the perfect everyday minerals shade.Im actually having to mix 2 completely different shades lol and im moderately happy with the color as long as I maintain a deep tan. If it starts to fade then my face looks too orange.Im mixing Sandy Olive with Medium Tan Beige so its wierd.Good luck finding you match though
Tan is Love
MAC is meant to be stage makeup. So it's thick, heavy, and VERY, well, obvious that you're wearing it. People arent meant to see MAC stuff close up, thats not what it was designed for. And most of it gets photoshopped to death by the time a photoshoot is done, so it does look like it blends.EDM is honestly your best bet. I have just found the colours are a bit darker than the pictures in real life.
I've always been intimidated by the idea of buying things from counters. Don't know why, but that's how it is.Anyhow, MAC was my first encounter with a counter (lol) where I actually bought something. Mainly because the salesperson left me alone for long enough to actually swipe, test and almost make-up my mind before she approached. She was not overly pushy, asking me nicely if she could help with something though not overly friendly either. Just a salesperson, getting the sale done quickly and sending me on my way. Quite pleasant in a way. Though I must admit I felt this: 'oh, another student, no idea trying to sell to this person'.
My first time at a MAC counter was awful. The salewoman could not find a match for foundation. Rather than just testing a swatch she would try it on half of my face. I had to wash my face so many times that it became very red and blotchy. She also caked on the foundation and it looked terrible. She told me it was because my skin was dehydrated and I needed to drink more water. I wear foundation everyday and it doesn't look terrible like it did when she applied it. Then I asked for her suggestion for a lipstick for work, explaining that I work in a hospital ICU. She suggested a fire engine red that was completely unprofessional. She couldn't understand why I didn't think it would be appropriate for work. Since then I have had much better experiences with MAC, but I still really don't like their foundation. I use EDM now and love it.
Hi everyone! When I lived in France, I went to MAC in Paris and the saleswomen were so snobby and looked a bit slutty for their age (in their 20s and already piling up makeup on their face!). As I was beginning in makeup, they just tossed me whatever they had, without explaining. I then bought a MAC Prep and Prime finishing powder, a MAC Studio Finish concealer and a MAC Prep and Prime. Although the color was good, the texture was way too cakey and drying.I went yesterday to MUFE in Brussels. The saleswoman chose 128 in HD Foundation, which looked a little too light in the bottle, I was expecting the colors beyond 160 or something. I am not quite convinced by the colors but once I'm in Paris, I'll swatch another color. 128 is NC37 normally, and I'm NC44!!! I went to MAC in Brussels too afterwards and the saleswomen were very nice, took their time with me, and complimneted me on my lips (I was wearing Rouge Baiser in 409) and were a bit more down to earth. I was recommended the Select Foundation (which indeed looked more natural) and the Select Concealer in a wand! I don't know what to get then, but I'll try again another color for MUFE.
@sangus- i hate benefit because i cant stand beinghounded by sales ladies! "leave me and my shadows alone already" I totally agree! I end up leaving with nothin gbecause they try to sell em every product and i get flustered and Im like "i need space" It totally puts me off going there! Am i right in thinking that its normal in the usa for a sales assistant to come "help" while you are trying to shop?
After reading these responses, I feel quite justified in never approaching my nearest MAC counter. All the MUAs come across as unapproachable, uninterested and far into themselves and their workplace drama. I've never felt smothered, after an experience at Sephora, be it from too much makeup on my face, or the sales assistants being pushy; that, and I know what looks good on my face, I don't need someone to do anything other than assist in application, or talk to me about specifics of a product. For you girls complaining about dimethicone--I have drier, more sensitive skin (I could count the pimples I've had on my face, on one hand) and without fail, anytime I use a product with dimethicone in it, I get a pimple.
