  • Makeup Tips, Tricks and All Talk!

Hey ladies,Since we're on Meg's Makeup I'd think it's safe to say you love lipstick!  I do too, but I've aways been a little skittish about looking like a clown.  Can any of you give advice on picking a red lipstick shade (one that I can wear for night time), either by looking at my photo or suggesting general rules?I sooo want to wear red lipstick!  It's sexy!Kisses,Melissa

Hi Melissa! I was deathly afraid of looking like a clown as well and had never touched red lipstick. Well I found one laying around and put it on... and it looked great. :D (MAC Exhibitionist. Unfortunately it's now discontinued, but that was the lipstick that revealed to me that I can wear red!)First, you need to be mentally ready to wear red lipstick. Yes this sounds totally silly, but I feel that the reason a lot of women think something will look bad on them, and that it "did look bad on them", is that they weren't ready to try it and get used to it. So have an open mind, tell yourself, "I can look good in red lipstick! I just need to find the right one", and get yourself to a makeup counter, Sephora or Ulta where you can leisurely take your time (avoid ones where you know the sales assistants are pushy). Bring a friend and make it fun (friend needs to be positive and supportive)! It'll probably take some trial and error... you look like you have yellow toned skin (warm), so look for warm reds (slightly orange instead of slightly blue)--they'll probably suit you better (it's not a hard and fast rule though, although I'm yellowy also, and I've found that warmer colors generally look better on me than cool colors). So prepare to spend some time at Sephora or Ulta just trying on different lipsticks... you'll know when you've found a red lipstick that looks good.

I got a sample size of DuWop's Private Red lipstick the other day, here's the description:  What it does:Private Red's formula adapts to each person's unique chemistry and will adjust accordingly, providing the perfect red shade that complements each person's coloring. The silky lipstick goes on smooth and the rich pigment leaves behind a slight stain so lips stay red. I've had the same issue, trying to find a red lipstick that works. The shade it turned to was pretty nice, although I haven't seen it on anyone else to judge just how 'custom' it is. Deff. worth a try :)

I always use the sample before I even consider buying a lipstick. Once I find a shade that works I bring it out shopping with me when I start to run low so I don't have to go through the cycle of finding a shade. Hope this helps.

Also, another alternative to red lipstick is red gloss or stain. :) It might help you ease into the whole red lip thing? Or a sheer (instead of matte or opaque cream) lipstick--Cargo makes some very sheer lipsticks.

One you really give it a chance, you will love it.  Something very sexy about the look.  Brings to mind some retro stuff, and yet, very modern!  I use a true red, with no yellow base and it looks great.  The idea to start w/ a gloss or stain is a good one, also.

Love wearing red lipstick with a very lightly done eye, and I always feel really chic! I used to wear a red lancome lipstick that was amazing. ( They discontinued it now) It had a red undertone. Always a good idea to try something on in the store before making the purchase that way you have a bit of time to eye yourself in the mirror and see if it works!

I've just recently gotten into wearing red this past year. I'm beyond pale (Irish, a bit anemic, burn looking out a window on sunny days, etc), and I was afraid I'd look ridiculous. My advice is to go out and buy a couple of reds with different undertones (orange, blue, etc). They don't have to be expensive brands, I went to CVS and bought a couple of NYC and wet'nwild l/s for like $1 each to see what looked best. NYX round l/s are really nice as well, and they have a HUGE selection of colors. If you want to try a stain, UD's Lip Envy is great, Envious is a really nice deep red that you can tone down by layering gloss on top. It goes on like a gel, lasts a long time, doesn't feather, and isn't drying.

I used to wear red lipstick every single day when my previous employer allowed it. If you are pale I would suggest a blue/red. If you have darker skin a warmer red usually looks better. I would line my lips with a matching red lipstick and fill them in with the liner as well. This will make it stay longer. Then fill them in with the lipstick and RE-LINE the lips. Doing this creates the perfect line and prevents smudging and bleeding. I usually preferred my lipstick to be semi-matte so that it didn't rub off on things like my teeth and drinks and last longer. I would one ply of toilet paper, press it against my lips and dust loose powder over it. This helps it stay for hours and hours. Also, I know it sounds dumb but put your finger in your mouth, grip it with your lips and pull it out. This will remove anything that would normally end up on your teeth. Also, don't do your eye makeup too dark. I think bright is ok, but dark will make you look like a hooker. haha.

My job pretty much lets me wear whatever I want.  The bosses wouldn't care and/or notice if I was wearing blue paint all over my face, let alone some fun red lipstick.  But every single time I try to wear feisty makeup to work (like a dramatic eye look or reddish lipstick), this older woman in my building always has to comment.  Her comments aren't necessarily rude, but they're sort of backhanded compliments that irk me.  I can't bring myself to wear anything fun anymore because I just know she'll have something to say.  If I want to wear red lipstick, I have to do it while washing dishes or vacuuming at home.  It does make it more bearable, though...I pretend like Wally and Beaver are going to come home any minute and eat the cake I baked them while wearing my fluffy skirt and polished pearls.  You should try it!

I won the Medieval in a contest here and here's a copy of my review from the Medieval review done by Kelli: I was super excited to learn that I won the contest and I couldn't wait to get this in the mail.  I got it just in time for the holiday season and wore it several times.  This is what I found:  It is phenomenal.  I LOVE it.  I give it a five/five.  Like Kellie said, it's perfect if you're a red novice and I think it's perfect if you've worn red all your life and are looking for a different red experience with this unique finish of 'my lips but redder."  Color: It is such a perfect red.  On me, it's a true cherry.  It's also a bit of a chameleon.  I wore a true red shirt and it looked cherry.  I wore a more Merlot colored jacket another day and it seemed to shift in color a bit to go with the jacket.  Cool, right?  It has great color payoff and it's sheer but totally buildable.  Application: It just glides on.  Completely smooth and buttery.  Feel: Since it's mostly vitamin E, it does not feel like lipstick, more like a balm.  It really doesn't feel like I'm wearing anything but I've got this great tint.  Wear: Really good (for a tint).  Final thoughts: I felt a little like Snow White wearing this.  :D  This is definitely a luxurious item and super high quality.  The care and attention to detail and love put into this line is obvious.  Miss King got it way right; she really knows her stuff.  It was just as great as promised and I will definitely purchase more of her line in the future.  I'm so happy I got a chance to try it.  THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I couldn't disagree more about Medieval. It is not meant to be a full coverage lipstick. It is specifically called a lip treatment. Poppy King knows her lip products and would never misrepresent what they can do-in my humble opinion. And it absolutely does not feather. And it has a staining effect so I do not feel that it fades. Poppy King does make outstanding full coverage reds if that is what you are looking for. I believe that a certain Ms. Gwen Stefani is a big fan.

Picking the right red is all about your skintone- now what you are wearing. If you can, swipe some of the color on your hand and look for the undertones of the color. If you're warm with olive or yellow undertones, choose a lipstick with orange or brown undertones. If you're cool with pinkish or reddish undertones, pick a red lipstick with blue or pink tones. Hope this helps!

I suggest going with a buildable red gloss or lipstain first, just to see what kind of red suits you best :) you could always go see a sales assistant/MUA at MAC or something and ask them to figure out your undertones or what would work with them - though I dont follow these rules because I have yellow toned skin and I find I look better in blue based reds!

I've been looking for the perfect red for such a long time. I went into MAC about a week ago after doing a bit of research online and tried on a couple of the ones which would look good. Luckily they said with my skintones, I'd suit both blue or orange based reds. My favourite was Ruby Woo. Its a bright, glam blue based red with a hint of vibrant pink. I am so excited that finally have a red lipstick that looks good on! I was told a red lipstick should liven up your face, make you look healthy. If you don't look healthy then its not the right colour.

With red lipstick I suggest you go in with a very neutral face, and then try on different colours in different colour famalies..plummy, corally, more pinky...and see what suits your skin tone better.  The first time I wore red lipstick I just dabbed it on and put lipgloss over it..but slowly I stopped being scared and now I love it to spice out a neutral face! :)
