they make 'em for foundation, shadow, blush, liner, whatever. what brand do you use? do you have all mac brushes? sephora? sonia kashuk from target? do tell...
I am a firm believer that you do not have to go bankrupt paying for MAC brushes to find good quality brushes! I highly recommend the sonia kashuk brushes. My favorite is the large fluffy blending brush. It is so soft, doesn't shed, fit perfectly in my crease, and blends beautifully. It is pretty also, white with silver details. I'd rate these a 4 out of 5 overall.I also use a few coastal scents brushes. I have the kabuki, concealer, and a few other brushes from them. They are mediocre (maybe a 3 out of 5). Not as soft as the kashuk brushes by a long shot but they are good enough for everyday use. They don't shed much at all. My kabuki bled red the first couple times I washed it but I read in other reviews that the same thing happened to everyone else. I love their concealer brush!
i get all my brushes in a pack from mark. they have the entire set except an eye brow brush...i get that at walmart. the mark brushes never fall apart and are easy to travel coming int heir own case. they actually have options where you can pick two brushes to snap together, with one on each end.
I recently reviewed the EcoTools brushes which are environmentally sound and cruelty free. Everyone I've turned on to them LOVES them and they are totally affordable. On sale at ULTA right now for about $8 for a 5 pack. I also LOVE my Two Faced Kabuki Brush. Its spendy but SO CUTE and soft that I couldn't resist. Don't break the bank on brushes but DO clean them weekly.
oh, i didnt tell you guys what i use. i have an ecotools brow grooming set that came with the most wonderful angled brow brush, a sonia kashuk set from target, a kabuki brush from cvs (i think it's essence of beauty), a sonia kashuk foundation brush, and 1 mac brush for eyeshadow, i think it's 239. i really want the mac 187 brush for foundation but im thinking about getting the sephora version for a few $$ less.
I need to stop at Ulta tonight to buy those Eco Tool's Brushes. Sweetassgal also got me hooked on the Two Faced Kabuki brush after reading her profile. I have to say it's the best brush I've ever use. I had my Bare Mineral Kabuki brush that would hurt my skin because the bristle were so hard, can't even compare it with the Two Faced one. I will never go back. I LOVE this brush so much. It's true it's so cute and the softess brush ever. So worth it!
I am so grateful for Sweetsassgal's recommendation on the Eco Tools brush set. I picked them up at Ulta for a steal. They are just delightful. They feel so good and perform so well. I am in love. Thank you for the great tip!
I use EcoTools and mark. for my main brushes. I also picked some up at the makeup show, but I don't remember the brand. I've never had any issues with the mark. brushes. It seems like I've had them forever and they're still in great shape.
I use coastal scents the most and I like the brushes. It's just that sometimes (not always thou) their costumer service could be better... I have the mini italian brush set and I love it. I use it everyday (I have small hands so travel size brushes require a bit more carefull to blend but I get a better grip)
I swear by ELF Studio brushes. They're pretty much the only brushes I use and their $1 eyeshadow brush. I also finally got some Eco Tools so I'm excited to try those out.I'm on a MAC brush no buy. I like to find dupes instead of shelling out $30+ for a brush. The only full sized MAC brush I own is the 109.
I have a variety of brushes from Mac, Bare Escentials, Christian Dior (came in a gift with purchase) and others. I agree the eco tools is a good buy. If I was just starting collection brushes, I would start there.Depending on what brands you use you may find some good deals. There are a lot of good brushes out there that are not super expensive. They get the job done. All of the ones I have seem to be in good shape and I have had them for 1-6 years. If you use bare escentuals it may be a better deal to buy a kit that comes with the brushes. Good luck finding that meets your needs.
I cannot justify buying super expensive makeup brushes! My most expensive brush is my Clinique foundation brush that my grandma bought me as a present ($28). I wouldn't pay more than that for a brush though, and that's my only brush that cost more than a couple of bucks! There are plenty of good, inexpensive brushes out there, from many different brands. Here are my faves, and here are the duds:FAVES:Clinique Foundation brushELF foundation, concealer, all over shadow brushesELF Studio line crease/contouring, face brushesEcoTools Powder, concealer and angled eyeliner brushesmark retractable kabuki brushesAvon concealer, all over shadow brushesSOSO:mark Foundation brushSephora concealer brushELF Studio line concealer brushAvon rounded shadow brushDUDS:Avon Foundation, eyeliner brushesELF face brushSorry the post is so long, but hope it helps someone! :)
I'm a huge fan of my BE kabuki brush, as well as the angled blush brush of theirs.I just bought a couple of ecotools brushes today. I got the foundation brush and the angled eyeliner brush. I'm excited to try them both out.
I don't own any MAC brushes. I have some from e.l.f. and ecotools and they work pretty well for me! I haven't tried the ones from Loew-Cornell, many MUAs have said that they are pretty good dupes for MAC eye brushes.
I have two MAC Brushes - a 224 and a 217, both of which I really love. They are so ridiculously expensive though, so I can't see myself purchasing anymore of them anytime soon (though I would really like the 187).I also have a 40 brush set that is unbranded that I got off ebay last year. Some of the brushes in it were a bit disappointing but the majority of them have been fantastic. :)I have some Wendy Hill brushes too (makeup brand here in NZ), I got them as part of my makeup kit when I did my makeup artistry course last year. I would not recommend any of the brushes apart from the foundation brush. They seem to be pretty poor quality and definitely overpriced.I'm really interested in the Ecotool brushes you ladies have mentioned! And I'm intrigued about the Sigma brushes I seem to hear so much about...
I am also a huge fan of the ELF Studio Line brushes..I have the foundation brush and the powder brush and they both work amazingly..plus you can't beat their $1 eyeshadow brush. I recently got a set from Sigma Brushes and so far I really like them. The only issue so far-I wanted to use the 187 dupe for foundation, but it sheds so much that i only use it for highlights and cream blushes.
My first brush set was from Wal-Mart and they are pretty great. I have an EcoTools brush set as well. Definitely recommend E.L.F. (Studio Line) brushes and Sonia Kashuk. And Essence of Beauty (found in CVS) I hear has awesome brushes. Couldn't see myself buying brush from MAC.And Coastal Scents just sells Crown Brushes. So I would go to Crown Brush and order mine. You have to spend at least $25 though.
I like the Kabuki brush from TheBalm. Great brush and about $10.00 I also like their eyeliner brush - short handled, which works well for me, and a great brush. Sephora's brushes are also good, I like the eyebrow brush for powdered liner. For lips and face - foundation, I like ELF's. They last, but, if I do feel like chucking them after a whlle, I don't feel bad. They do clean up well, but, eh, sometimes, after a bit they don't seem so great. I think a few months usage on these is okay.
I have about 30 brushes....most of which are Sephora and Smashbox. But I'll list my top five favorites:1) Stila Powder Brush2) Laura Mercier All-over shadow3) Laura Mercier longhandled blush4) Tarte Smudge Brush5) Tie: Sephora Silver Smudge brush or Sephora Black small dome brush.
I buy Trish McAvoy brushes on eBay for a fraction of their outrageous store prices, and then Cat Cosmetics' Kabuki brush. I also have two Kabuki brushes from Chanel that are over 15 years old -- they have never shed or lost their shape and I have spent years washing the heck out of them. I think one of them was a gift with purchase, and the other cost $15. I guarantee you that if I bought something similar today it would fall apart in a nanosecond.
Right now I have Bamboo ecological brushes based on a recommendation from this site. They are nice, but I really miss a huge professional set I had from MAC that got stolen. The Bamboo ones are nice, but the don't have enough adequate eye brushes.
Ooops! I forgot the set of Giorgio Armani brushes I got frm eBay -- amazing! My favorite is a contour eyeshadow brush with really dense bristles that are soft and strong at the same time. Mmmmmm, brushes!
I have the mini travel set from mark and several brushes from ELF. I love them both. Plus they are more in my price range than the outrageously expensive brushes out there. I saw the ecotools at Ulta and wanted to try them out. Maybe I will get them next time I go back since so many of you seem to love them :)
I only use synthetic brushes (I'm a vegetarian), so here's my list:6 The Body Shop brushes: after 8 years they still look & feel brand new3 Smashbox: the quality is pretty shoddy, 1 broke w/i months & they all feel rough1 Bobbi Brown1 Urban Decay: feels almost as good as The Body Shop brushes
i used to use all types of brushes and not care much, but after going to the makeup show in NY i am addicted to Crown brushes and I can't live without a soft blending shadow brush or a soft bronzer brush that doesn't scratch my skin during application
Considering this is such an Everyday Minerals loving group, I can't believe only one person has mentioned them so far. They are very good and quite reasonably priced. Tip - if you put some of the more expensive ones (flat top $10, kabuki $10, angled brush $8) in a custom kit, you can get 6 brushes for $34. I would also second the Body Shop brushes. They are wonderfully soft and work very well. They are a little more expensive than I might like however.
Yes, thirding the EDM brush love. I have the flat top brush, which I use for mmu foundation (gives great coverage), long handled kabuki for priming/finishing dust and blush, eye kabuki which was made for e/s but is really great for concealer, and the angled eyeliner brush which I use for powder eyeliner. The brushes are very nice quality- soft and made w/ sustainable materials and like lbrhodes mentioned, super cheap if you get them in a kit.
I've been ale to find some great quality alternatives to pricey brushes, and have pretty much every type covered in my arsenal now. Some brands I love are Essence of Beauty, Eco Tools, Everyday Minerals, and Sonia Kashuk.
I ONLY use Everyday Minerals brushes. They are so soft and durable and effective. I can't believe how much money I wasted on brushes before I started using EDM
In everything I do I try to be as environment friendly as possible. I commute to university, even if it takes up tp 1,5 hour longer than driving the car. So for me there's three aspects when buying a brush: can't contain animal hair, must be good quality and preferably made with the environment in mind. Which all boils down to Ecotools and EDM which I think are pretty much comparable. Together, they cover every brush need I have from big, fluffy, powder brushes, through various versions of kabukis for all tastes, to small, firm eye brushes. They are wonderfully soft, do not shed and they really do save your money for other things. :D
I don't think mac brushes are work the money. There are so many fabulous brushes out there at affordable prices. Some I recommend:1) Everyday Minerals: There brushes are the softest brushes I ever used. Also if you get these in one of their kits, it works out to a very cheap price.2) Ecotools: These are incredibly soft brushes as well. They're available at most drugstores around here and I think target as well. You can usually get a pack of 4 or 5 brushes for 10 dollars and they work great!3) Essence of Beauty: These are the brushes I started out with when I first started wearing makeup and still use some of them. This brand is available at CVS. Some of the brushes are great and some are a little scratchy but maybe thats because I'm spoiled by the softness of my EDM brushes now. Some that aren't scratchy and work great: Crease duo, Angled eyeshadow Brush, Blush brushHope this helps you out :)
I really don't have that many brushes, but I'll break down the ones that I have and had (swapped away!).
So-so Brushes:
-Sephora Bronzer Brush - great kabuki, long-handled, awesome for powder foundation... which I unfortunately don't use anymore.
-Japonesque Foundation Brush - I really don't think that it was the fault of the foundation brush, but I didn't like it - I think using fingers was better.
-Sephora small taklon eye brush - useful, but could do without. I use it to pack on a highlight in the inner corner of my eye.
GREAT Brushes:
-Studio Tools Stippling Brush - LOVE for liquid foundation. Airbrushed look :) I also use this for bronzer/blush sometimes.
-EcoTools Powder Brush - LOVE. I use this for blush/bronzer too since it's a good size.
-Tarte two-sided eye brush (crease & fluffy) - LOVE. I could do everything I needed with eyeshadow with just this brush.
-EcoTools Concealer Brush - LOVE.
-TheBalm Angled Eyeliner Brush - LOVE for gel/cream eyeliner :)
I love the Studio Tools stippling brush too, it's awesome and I got it for only $1.99! I have the Sonia Kashuk one too and it's also pretty good, I use them for different things since the SK has a bigger head. It's better for foundation, while the ST is better for pigmented blush for me.
My brushes are all from everyday minerals, with a few others here and there. EDM brushes are super high quality and seriously soft, and the price is incredible (especially if you buy a custom kit). I also have a few coastal scents brushes and a few elf studio line brushes (esp. love the flat top for blush).
Ok, so let's see...Face-brush: •Kabuki-brush from Bare Escentuals•big powder brush from ChanelEyeshadow-brushes: •Sponge applicator brush from MAC•Eyeshadow blending brush (with 2 sides) from Sephora•small blending brush from Bobbi BrownBrows:•small travel size brow brush from Stila (for filling)•brow brush from MACCheeks:•blush brush from MACI ordered the angeled contour brush from EDM yesterday:-).
I use mostly mineral makeup so I prefer EM's brushes and EcoTools brushes, because synthetic ones release the product off the brush better.I get my natural hair ones from Coastal Scents :)
Add another vote for EDM! :-) I had a cheap Jane Kabuki from Wal-Mart that I was using with my samples. I thought it was okay until I got my EDM brushes. Wow! What a difference. I realized how itchy the Jane one was. I love both my Long Handled Kabuki brushes (I got two) and my Flat Top Brush. Super soft and good coverage. I really like their Everyday Eyeshadow Brush too. I will probably have to get at least one more in the future because I switch eyeshadows almost daily. Same with the liner brush. I LOVE studio tools concealer brush too. It has a really small head to it, which makes it good for precision application. I can get my concealer right where I want it to go without the "halo effect" that larger concealer brushes often leave.
I don't have much experience with brushes, but here are my experiences!ELF's studio line actually has some decent brushes. They're around 2 bucks each, and the only significant downside is that they have a chemical smell until you wash the brush a few times. I love (or I should say loved, since I lost it) their complexion brush for a light coat of primer or finishing dust. It's soooo soft. Their flat top brush and concealer brush are also decent. The concealer brush doesn't afford much precision, but for me, it's nice when I want to conceal larger areas.I love EDM brushes too, like may of the ladies on here. They're affordable, dense, super soft, and made of sustainable materials, to boot! I use their flat-top brush for foundation, long handled kabuki for primer, finishing dust, and blush, the eye buki for concealer (it's meant for eyeshadow, but is a little large for precise application), and the angled eyeliner brush for.. well, eyeliner. Haha.
I've been using Sonia Kashuk brushes since high school. I really love them. I have a few more expensive brushes including a MAC foundation brush I NEVER use. I also really like some of the mark brushes especially their new angled face brush with I LOVE for contouring my cheeks with their bronzer
The best brushes I have ever come across are from Everyday Minerals they are amazing, they are so soft and stay that way even after you wash them I have 18 of them so far and all are still as soft as the day I brought them !!!
wooow, I just got my new order from EDM and immediately had to try out the angeled cheek brush which came with it. It's amazing!!! Soo soft and just exactly what I wanted. Plus, I finally found THE new blush color for me "coffee break". As I have a rather square face (lol!), I'm always on the hunt for some good blush.
I am a firm believer that you do not have to go bankrupt paying for MAC brushes to find good quality brushes! I highly recommend the sonia kashuk brushes.
I also really like some of the mark brushes especially their new angled face brush with I LOVE for contouring my cheeks with their bronzer

wooow, I just got my new order from EDM and immediately had to try out the angeled cheek brush which came with it. It's amazing!!! Soo soft and just exactly what I wanted. Plus, I finally found THE new blush color for me "coffee break". As I have a rather square face (lol!), I'm always on the hunt for some good blush.
