I shed hair like crazy!! Help?
Mon, 10/19/2009 - 8:17am
Hey Ladies,I probably shouldn't complain, seeing as I have a ridiculous amount of hair that's thick and healthy, but it seems that I shed everywhere and all the time.. it's all over my home; I swear I'm worse than a pet!I also have a ton of hair in the drain when I'm done showering. Is this normal? it seems like I shed more than most, though it doesn't seem to be effecting my hair health in the least bit.Suggestions? Thoughts? Educate me if you can! Thanks xoxo

I have the same problem, curious if anybody has an answer for this. :) I looked at the top of my head a few times and can tell it's definately thinning. It totally freaked me out, so I just don't look anymore. It's scary how much hair I lose in a day though. Even my hairdresser once asked me if that was normal (she noticed a lot fell out when my hair was washed).

Yeh.. but I'm not thinning at all. I just lose a lot of hair.

Yea at the end of every shower before I turn off the water I always grab my hair and pull gently and like a whole WAD of hair comes out.Its kinda scary....But it has alot to do with how you wear your hair during the day.If you let your hair dow and don't use alot of stiffening place holding products you hair will naturally lose strands throughoyut the day.If you keep your hair up or use alot of hairspray mouse product ect then they stay glued in there untill you shower and then they just all come out at the same time.Im worried.... but it must not be too bad or I would start noticing some balding by now lol.

Oh and Stylemama had a neat little recipe involving Tea Tree oil to help regrow new hair. I think you can search the review but she basically mixed the TTO into her shampoo right before using it and let it sit for a bit.I havnt tried it yet but really want to!

Hm.. I suppose trying tto couldn't hurt, although I'm using Paul MItchel's Tea Tree hair care line and I lose hair throughout the day and in the shower.. tons of it.. you're right though, I'm not going bald so it must be okay!

I have this exact same problem-my hair is so thick so its not too much of an issue but it does worry me!!! do any of you have children? i have always shed quite alot of hair then when i was pregnant i was told that i wouldnt shed much hair until after the baby was born then i would shed loads for a couple of months-my daughter is 2 in november and i am still losing huge amounts of hair everyday-mine also seems to get everywhere!!! loads in the drain after i shower, when i brush my hair, when i run my fingers through my hair etc! if anyone knows why/has asolution i would love to know! Sure my hair is thick now but i dont think it will be in a few years time at this rate! ;)
nope, no kids. maybe it's cause i din't brush my hair, and only comb it when it's wet in the shower? i don't know. =\

Yeah that colud be why?! I dunno......maybe someone else does! =/
This is called "hair fall" and can be helped tremendously by the occasional scalp massage with a tiny bit of Almond Oil and by adding a little Tea Tree Oil to your shampoo. Works wonders!!!!!!!!!ALMOND OIL and TEA TREE OIL are GREAT!!!!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
thank you. my shampoo already has tea tree oil in it.. maybe it needs more, or maybe i need to switch shampoos. i wonder if coconut oil would have a similar effect.. I buy the huge tub of coconut oil and use it for my skin, nails and the ends of my hair.Everything I googled in regards to hair fall pointed to baldness but I'm not bald or balding or even thinning. I'm just shedding a noticeable amount more than I ever have before.

Thank you sweetassgirl! melilala I am the same, not balding or thinning just moulting worse than an alsation! lol! :D
I recently had the same problem, I was losing so much hair that it was starting to worry me. I went and had quite a bit of hair cut off, started taking vitamins, and stopped using cheap shampoo (I swear, Herbal Essences makes my hair fall out like crazy!). I've noticed that I haven't been losing nearly as much hair since.
Klynn,Glad that worked for you, but I take vitamins, don't use harsh or drugstore shampoo, and my hair is in pretty good condition. I had someone suggest to me (not on Meg's) that it could be a thyroid issue..I'm just going to try to de-stress, get scalp massages and maybe switch shampoos.

I don't brush my hair either during the day. Only right out of the shower

punkey-- You should never brush (only comb--with a wide tooth comb) hair while it is wet because it is more fragile wet, than when it is dry. Curly hair, especially.

Oh, never knew that :SMy brush is pretty wide with the prongs.

melilala, I also have a similar problem. I lose TONS of hair. Fist fulls! It seems really bad and I have no idea why. I drink lots of water, take vitamins every day... I'm really healthy. But I lose so much hair I'm worried I'm going bald (I'm off Accutane now, and have been for 2 months, but I'm losing more hair now than I did while I was on it! Maybe I just forgot how much hair I used to shed...)

I have curly/wavy hair and while I was washing it last night (and watching a ton fall out) I came to a possible conclusion: A few years ago I started washing my hair only every other day or even less than that. I only comb through my curls right after washing it and that's it. No combing/brushing while it's dry or on the days I don't wash it. I was thinking, maybe since my hair doesn't really get a chance to shed daily, it just sticks in my hair and all comes out at once when I'm washing it? I actually had my thyroid tested about 3 years ago because I was freaking out so much about it, and it came back normal. Who knows, at least I'm not bald. :)

Hm.. that's a possibility, ruby, I wash my hair once, maybe twice a week (as of fairly recently) and only comb when i'm combing conditioner through it.. and though I shed throughout the day, maybe it's just not th same as when i was washing my hair 4-5x a week. Thanks for the idea :)

BDK (bluedevilkitty), that's what I'm gonna call you) heh. I hope you're not going bald, geeze! I've had friends on acutane and they never said hairloss was a side effect...there are lots of shampoos and treatments to help. I use Nioxin scalp renewal once a month because I have an itchy, psoriasis scalp but it also helps with hair regrowth (not that I need it) maybe you could try that?

Same here! It's becausee of how thick my hair is thouuugh.
mine is thick, too.

Here's something interesting I just read:
6. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — This synthetic substance is used in shampoos for its detergent and foam-building abilities. It causes eye irritations, skin rashes, hair loss, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, and allergic reactions. It is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the parenthetic explanation "comes from coconut."Got it from here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/bodycare/toxic_cosmetics.cfmI use shampoos with SLS in it all the time. I know I've read places that it's not ideal for hair for one reason or another, but the HAIR LOSS one was new to me. Maybe it's time I look for a new shampoo. Sad, since I really like the stuff I'm using. :(

It's normal to shed about 50-100 hairs a day, even though that sounds excessive. I also lose a good deal of hair each day, especially in the shower (this sounds gross, but I put it on the shower wall until I'm done, then I wipe it all off and toss it out with a tissue.. keeps it from plugging up the drain). I have tons of ridiculously thick hair, so it was never noticeable until a few years ago when I suddenly was losing crazy amounts-- ending in half of my hair falling out, and all of it becoming thin and fragile. I'm not sure of the exact culprit, because that was right after I had been on (and then gone off of because it was so horrid) the Depo shot (switched from my normal bc pills), plus two medications that could have caused it. It took an entire year for it to grow back to a manageable length, until then I looked like I had a mullet while it was growing back (most of the hair around my face had fallen out). My best friend got me the Nioxin system of products (shampoo/conditioner/leave in treatment/deep treatment masques), and those really helped to restore my hair back to it's normal thickness. I still use them occasionally as I like the way they make my hair feel, and they smell nice; very minty. If you're worried about your hair, you could give that a try, they sell it at a lot of salons.
hrhtracey, I do the same thing! I put in conditioner and let it sink in and do other things and then comb it out and catch the hair that comes out and stick it on the wall. If I didn't, I'd be cleaning out drains weekly.
Try taking silica. I take it in gel form, it's amazing stuff. I had bad hair loss due to illness a few years ago, my hair was really thin and I had about 1/2 the volume of hair that I had before I got sick. I started taking 1 tablespoon of silica gel a day and within 2 weeks my hair had stopped falling out. It took about 6 months for my hair to get back to it's pre sickness volume. When I take silica gel my hair is healthy and grows faster. It's also great for finger nails and skin too.

Seems I'm fine now. It may have been stress that brought it on.. my hair was never thinning, to be clear.. just shedding way more than I ever had before (most certainly more than the average 50-100 strands a day.)
http://ediblelove.wordpress.com/
Are you taking any medications? Or changed medications? That can really promote unexpected hair loss.
Try to brush your hair out everyday and wash it more often so it can breathe more easily. Are their changes in your diet?
can't be brushed. it's curly. it'd cause all sorts of damage. no diet change. i think it was stress.
http://ediblelove.wordpress.com/
hime- I feel so much better knowing that, my fiance thinks it's just a gross habit, lol!melilala- Yeah, definitely don't brush your hair if it's curly (although you obviously already know that). My hair didn't start thinning until it had mostly fallen out. If you know you've been overly stressed lately, that most likely is the culprit and I'm sure once you destress you'll be fine. :)
My hair is VERY VERY thin already, and I am still losing hair every day. It honestly worries me, I dont take any meds, I wash it often, I brush it often, I dont wear it down, I refuse to wear it down because its just flat against my head. I dont know what to do anymore..Any special oils specifically for this?
Wow...i thought i was the only one fearing that i might be going bald!lol I'm gonna try out a few of the tips you girls so kindly provided!I have very long and thick hair, but its just seems to be falling by the handfulls! Its scary! And I have no clue why either...Ah well...at least its not serious!...eheh***********+http://lumin0us.blogspot.com
Meg mentioned almond oil works for hair fall!
http://ediblelove.wordpress.com/
I'm having the same issues as a lot of you mentioned. I've always been told I have a LOT of hair (not necessarily thick hair, but a LOT of thin hair), so I guess I can stand to lose some, but it's been a few years now and I can definitely notice it's thinner than it used to be. I've been told that diet, nutrition, and stress are big factors.
OK THIS IS ONE OF MY AREAS I HAVE HAD KIDS , I HAVE HAD STRESS IN MY LIFE , I HAVE HAD SURGERYS AND SO ON AND SO ON ALL THE REASONS YOUR HAIR THINS OR MAYBE JUST FALLS OUT BUT YOU DO NOT NOTICE THINNING . NIOXIN YOU CAN GET IT FROM YOU SALON FOR PEOPLE WITH THINNING HAIR USE IT EVERYDAY LIKE NORMAL SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER FOR JUST LOSING ALOT OF HAIR SO THAT IT STOPS FALLING OUT SO MUCH USE 3 X'S A WEEK JUST BE PATIENT IT WILL WORK I SPEEK FROM EXPERIANCE SCRUB HAIR AND SCALP WITH SHAMPOO LET SIT A MIN THEN THE SAME WITH CONDITIONER BUT LET THAT SIT 3 MIN OR UNTIL IT TINGLES STICK WITH IT IT REALLY WORKS ( DO NOT BUY OFF BRANDS THEY DO NOT WORK GET THE REAL THING FROM THE SALON) WISH YOU WELL
I lose lots of hair too, and what I noticed is if your hair is longer it will most likely look like you lost much more than you did! So don't worry it is normal to lose about 80 hairs a day.
I lose crazy amounts of hair too. It is due to thyroid disfunction. You may want to check yours too because that may be the root of the problem. A couple of times in my life when I was really stressed my hair was falling out so much i started seeing my scalp. I used Rogaine for women for a month and it worked. No side effects. Now I still lose lots of hair but not as extreme. Also try using oil treatments for your hair - just experiment with almond, argan, coconut, palm oils. They are cheap if you get a no-brand one and one of them may work for you, in addition you will get shiny, healthier looking hair.
is anyone using birth control products? Ever since I started taking Yazmin, i've been losing alot more hair than normal. i actually read that it is a side effect...

I loose a lot of hair too. It's very thin but it doesn't seem to get thinner but I'm not sure...
my hair sheds a lot too!
My hair's quite thin too, but I don't think it sheds .
so a follow up to my initial post:I started massaging rosemary essential oil, grapefruit essential oil and Nettle oil (all found on iherb.com) into my scalp and hair once a week and have had amazing results. I've always had nice hair, but it's thicker, shinier, and much less unruly! Seems to be growing faster, too.

I shed hair like crazy too but it's due to hypothyroidism. Not to freak you out, but you might want to consider telling your doctor to see if it's worth running some tests over. I didn't realize it, but I had other physical symptoms aside from shedding hair that developed over the years that I had forgot about (dry skin, thin brittle nails, etc) that were signs of hypothyroidism that he noticed during physical examination.
I lost a lot of hair so far, but I have sebhorreic dermatitis. Unfortunately it did not go back to its previous state no matter what products/treatments I used :(
