I need help figuring out what to wear for a Hawaiian-themed Christmas Party!!

My husband's military unit is having their annual Christmas party this saturday. It's being held at their brand-new armory, and the theme this year is Hawaiian. The last party they had was just a regular formal party where the men wore their class A's and the girls wore cocktail dresses or fancy gowns. I LOVE dressing up nice, and am more than a little dissapointed in the theme this year. I have no hawaiian outfits and don't want to buy any. There is going to be a few hundred people there and I just can't see EVERYONE wearing hawaiian stuff. Would it be bad for me to just wear a cocktail dress or something? My husband is most likely just going to be wearing a nice pair of pants and a button-up shirt, not too dressy. I need ideas!

Can anyone help? :)

you can alweays wear a cocktail dress and make your hair straight and long. Wear it to one side and have a flower in your ear.If you dont want to spend alot, try just buying a puka shell necklage or a lei to go with.

I don't blame you for not being pleased about the theme. I wouldn't either! You could go in a regular cocktail dress but you may stand out more. I would have fun with it and like Punkey Dew suggested doing a side part with a big Flower would look great. Also I don't know if you have any bright dresses from summer but you could always wear one, and then match the flower to it. Also this would be a time when I would get out the Sally Hansen Self Tanner and do the powder on the legs. My gosh my memory is terrible. I can't remember who did the post, but it was wonderful and had the woman with the gorgeous legs on it. Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

Now that I think about it, I do recall seeing summer dresses on clearance at Target for like $6. There was some cute ones, I'm going to go back there today and see what I can find. They are the maxi-dress style (which I've always wanted). Thanks for the hair ideas too!

I'd do a "retro pinup" girl look...you know, like the girl's on the nose art of the planes?I'd have my hair done really cute in a 1940's style and then pop into MAC and get makeup done, complete wiht lashes of course and red lippy. Then stop at the craft store and get a gardenia or other luscious faux-flower and hot glue to a "duck-clip",they sell at Sally's! I'd wear a cocktail dress with fishnets and platform pumps...voila!!!Have fun and report back, all those goregsous men in uni's....:)
I'd dress like I would for a nice event in summer, do loose, flowy hair with beachy waves and add a flower in the hair and perhaps a little self tanner or bronzer if your summer color has faded. But if you want to knock em dead, go with mjsred.
So this is what I ended up getting: http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=50189&vid=1&pid=696760&scid...I was thinking of maybe wearing black leggings with it (it's cold here in Minnesota) and some sparkly flats. Also a thin black belt to show my waist since this dress doesn't really show my curves all that great. Anything else I could try to make it super cute?

I was going to suggest instead of a Hawaiian print, you could go with a colorful dress in something like aqua or coral, and accessorize it with flower/shell jewelry and loose wavy hair. I love mjsred's suggestion! I just saw the dress that you bought though, and I think a belt is definitely in order to show off your curves.. I'd suggest maybe bronze, though. Do you have any jewelry in mind for it, or a hair accessory?
Thanks for all the tips! The party's over, it was this past Saturday. It was kind of a flop (that's what you get having guys plan a party I think). I loved what I ended throwing together for my outfit though. I'm just hoping next year we get to wear formal dresses again with the guys NOT wearing horrible ugly Christmas sweaters. Yes that's right, that is how a few of them "dressed up".

Ooops, sorry, I've been away from Meg's for a while and been bad about reading dates of postings. I'm sorry to hear it wasn't that great, but I'm glad you loved your outfit and bet you looked terrific! Ugh, Christmas sweaters are almost always a fail.. I can't think of any good ones, but I say almost just in case one exists out there somewhere, lol.
Wish I would have seen this sooner, I live in Hawaii. But next time, a hawaiian print anything would work, with flip-flops. And for a Christmas flare, a lei made out of Christmas garland. People are wearing them all over here and they are just awesome.
