I am trying to decide what works best. Eye Liner Pencil? or a eyeliner Brush. Ive always wanted to try those Eye Liner Pots from Bobbi Brown or Mac Makeup as the ladies there think the brushes work best. What do you ladies think?Artcandy
I use brushes when I want precise application and have time to spend creating my perfect eye. I go to pencils when I'm in a hurry. Urban Decay has some of the most fabulous eye pencils ever. I also use my brush wet with my eye pots to really make it POP! I love that word...POP!
I've always used a soft eyeliner pencil. I guess its more like a soft crayon than a pencil though. Maybelline colorstay eyeliner has been my choice for a loooong time. Although somtimes I think it might be nice to have a change.
I totally agree with Sweetassgal... I love my Mac & Bobbi Brown gel liners. They give a look that is in between pencil & liquid. However, it takes me longer to apply it than when I use pencil. Like Sweetassgal, when I'm in a hurry, UD 24/7 pencils are my go to.
I generally prefer to use a wet eyeliner brush with eyeshadow. I feel like it gives me better control, and I am much less likely to overdo it. It also gives me a better color selection. One of my favorites is to use Mary Kay's Lucky Penny (which is discontinued) as a liner. It is a pretty bronze shade that gives my eyes definition but in a more subtle way.I do use eyeliner pencils on occasion. I have never tried Eye Liner Pots.
i agree w/ sweetassgirl. brushes for percision and super thin lines on the water line. pencils on the rush and day-to-day. i have make up for ever aqua eyes pencils, a mac pencil and a mac fluidline (in a pot).
Stiff Brushes work great, even artist paint brushes. I have found that if you brush onto your lashes, instead of trying to draw a straight line across the top, you can get it between the lashes and it looks so much better.
I use a pro eye gel (stephanieg.bisoucosmetics.com) I use the black and LOVE it. I can apply as little or as much. Depending on the look I want. I am not a big fan of the eye pencil becuase I never can seem to get it to go on how I like. I have been using this eye gel for about 2 years now and will never use anything else. I do also like to use my brush wet in Bisou eye colors (when I want to do something funky) isn't eye make-up the best thing. LOL
I use both gel liner and pencils about equally. I am really loving the new Eye Ink by Urban Decay. This is new for fall and I was lucky enough to get one from Meg in my Most Fab Gift. This is seriously good liner. I found I just had to practice to get the gel liner down. I also like Stila's Smudge Pots. And The Balm makes my favorite liner brush. Although the one that came in the Eye Ink is really great.
I used to have a cool eyeliner pot my Mom got for me and my sister (one each, lol) from Avon. It came with a little brush and that has by far been my favourite eyeliner so far. I can't use the tiny wet eyeliner brushes, my hand is definitely not steady enough, and pencils are okay but I LOVE that Avon product. If I find out what it's called I'll post back!
I like liquid liner best. Second choice would be a damp brush in a pretty eyeshadow. Some pencils tend to feel like they don't glide on smoothly to me. Thanks Sharond for the great tip! I will have to try applying to my lashes next time I use m brush and shadow.
I defy recommend a good gel liner and brush for eyeliner!!!!!! Mac's fluidlines are amazing. Trust me , once you try gel liners, you will never go back....so smooth and creamy, they glide on like...well...like a gel lol!
I agree with Angie--I use pencils when I'm in a hurry, and cream liner when I have just a moment more. Once you get used to it, cream liner really doesn't take that long :)My favorite pencils are Physicians Formula FLATliners. The lasting power isn't great esp on oily skin, but the colors are lovely and I am now addicted to the flat pencil concept :-P My favorite cream liners are Stila Smudgepots. They really last and are super creamy. If you're looking for a cheap way to try it out, try Jane or Wet 'n' Wild cream liners! They're under $6 I think, are really pretty good quality, and both come with a brush! (Haven't tried WnW but have heard good things, and the Jane one comes with a very nice angled eyeliner brush!!)My favorite liner brush is the ecotools angled eyeliner brush. I've used the smashbox flat liner brush and find it more difficult to use than an angled eyeliner brush. The little bitty brushes with the smaller tips are surprisingly hard to use as well. With the angled eyeliner brush, you just press it along your eyelashes and the line ends up pretty decent and pretty even. Hope that helps!
I tend to use what I am most comfortable with. For me this is the basic traditional eyeliner (Dior, Colorstay,Estee Lauder) for the reason I can do this quickly. I know everything is about a learning curve. But, I get up early in the morning and like to stay with what I can do quick. Now if it is a special evening and I have more time, I will wet and eye shadow or do a liquid or gel eyeliner.I think it all boils down to time, practice and what tools you have handy.
I use my Clinique Cream Liner when I have time to make it look great - I can get a crisp line, or smudge it out and it's just a cleaner look imo. I love it. But it takes a lot of time!So I use my Styli Style Liners when I'm out on the go or in a rush. They're a lot easier and quicker to apply and smudge out, and I'm done!So I guess it just depends on whether or not you have/want to spend the time :]
I use pencils most days because they save a little time. I love the potted ones (Stila Smudge pots or Smasbhox JetSet liners) if I want them to STAY on. I think a flat liner brush works best for gels or creams. Just make little dashes all across the eye like connect the dots. It takes some practice to really get it close to your lash line. It helps to sort of hold the outside corner of your eye out to make your lid flat. Also, if you get right up close to the mirror so its easier to see with one eye!.
I used to be a pencil-only person due to the convenience, but I just bought an angled liner brush, and I love it! I use it with loose and pressed powder eyeshadows/eyeliners, and the staying power is great, especially since I have oily lids. With pencil the eyeliner would smudge more easily.
I am a fan of liquid eyeliner, which of course comes with a brush;-). As I have sensitive eyes due to wearing contacts, I have tried about everything under the sun...some like Bobbi Brown or MAC looked great but didn't last half as long on my face as regular otc products would. So right now I'm using ISADORA colorful eyeliner in black. As I'm originally from Germany and moved to the States just about 1 year ago, I first had to figure out how to make my supply of eyeliner last. My mom sent me some of the most important things anyways from month to month, but finally I found a website here where I can buy it from and no longer have to be a pain in the butt to my parents:-). It's www.cosmeticmall.com . I believe they even have a 50% sale right now.
I've always wanted to try the eye gels but I haven't gotten around to it. I use the Clinique cream shaper for eyes in egyptian which is a brown/black with gold shimmer and I get great wear out of it. I also use a wet brush with eyeshadow when I don't have the shade of eyeliner I want/need. :)
I don't particularly like the pencils I've tried since they tend to tug my eye lid a bit unlike my eye liner brushes which I can just press on, if that makes sense? I also prefer eye liner brushes, since I can choose to use any of my eye shadows as a liner from white to chocking pink. :)
i love liquid liner applied with an angled brush! it gives really precise application and since my eyes are SUPER dark brown, from a few feet away they look black, i try to make them look somewhat colored. when i use black liquid liner (which is more intensely black than a black pencil liner), it makes a contrast between the black of the liner and the brown of my eyes. i hope that makes sense when you read it :D pencil is faster and easier, but to me, it just doesnt give the same effect.
In my opinion, I've found eye liner pencils to be easier and less mess than using a eye liner brush. As long as you sharpen your eye pencil before each use, you can achieve a very precise line on your lid.
I like a brush better, you can always wet it to make it look more intense. I love bare escentuals Fashionista Liner Shadow. Ulta sells a 'get started' kit that comes with 4 colors (the above included) and three brushes. It's a great kit, I don't use it everyday but am always happy with the results.
I love them all. Although, that's not very helpful is it?I'm kind of partial to a brush, I think, just because I feel like it give me more options. I can make the line thinner or thicker. Plus, with brushes you can always convert your eye shadow into liner, which I love doing. Urban Decay has some great new cream liners they're aren't horribly expensive and work well.I like pencils too. Pencils are definitely easier and faster, but I feel like they're kind of a 1 kind of line thing. It's pretty much set with how it's going to look and doesn't really give you much room the play with.
Lately I have had trouble getting my liner to stay all day. I think it may be the humidity. So I am doing pencil, then lining over that with either mineral powder or gel liner. L'oreal HIP is a good gel liner, although I just read here on this site that they do testing on animals, so I am unlikely to buy that brand ever again.
I'm big on gel liners lately, I think they look great, are easy to apply, and last really well. I've tried Stila Smudge Pots, Mac Fluidlines, L'Oreal HIP, and Wet n Wild brands. I use a bent liner brush; I have one from adornedwithgrace.com as well as a Sephora brand one. The Sephora one gives a finer line and is great for the upper lid, but I found it pokey on the waterline, which I use the other one for.
Quick addendum to my post - I forgot to mention that the different types of eye brushes REALLY make a difference as well!I use the theBalm Shady Lady Angled Eyeliner Brush (SUPER cheap at Sephora!) and it works well with my cream eyeliners. However, the others that I have tried didn't work out so well for me:-I tried the angled, really thin Sonia Kashuk brush (I don't remember its name, sorry) and I wasn't able to get as straight of a line, plus it was harder to smudge.-I tried a flat eyeliner brush and I really couldn't maneuver it un-awkwardly enough to really get any use out of it. So if you prefer eye pencils simply because of ease of application (not time), I'd suggest trying different brushes - with the right brush, it makes using cream/gel eyeliners SO much easier!
I like both! I use a soft pencil (Avon Glimmersticks), and I use an eyeliner brush. I use a soft eyeliner brush with loose minerals, and stiff eyeliner brush for gel eyeliner.
I like both :-) I have to say eyeliner is easier

I use a pencil and go over that with a brush dipped in either shadow or gel liner. It gives you a lot more staying power.

I like eye pencils because they're so convenient, but for a more precise look nothing beats a liquid or gel eyeliner!

I use a pencil for my everyday look cause dont have much time and I use a brush when I have way more time to go to restaurant or dinner with my man =)

I'm strictly a brush and powder eyeshadow as liner girl. Haven't actually used an eye pencil in forever!
Pencils are quick but I like to use brushes for a more precise line.
I like both! I use a soft pencil (Avon Glimmersticks), and I use an eyeliner brush. I use a soft eyeliner brush with loose minerals, and stiff eyeliner brush for gel eyeliner.
I don't use pencils. I just use my brush. The only pencil I have it a black MAC one but I'm not a fan of black eyeliner on me. It's too harsh.
