Anybody losing their bone [density, that is]?? Osteopenia/osteoporosis
Hi All,I recently had a bone density scan and the radiologist told me my T-score is -2.1, or osteopenia. My gyn called me and said to come in because I am showing "significant" bone loss. OMG!! My first thought was to freak out and start drinking milk, which I abhor. Then I started doing some research. There are all sorts of supplements, food, exercise, etc. to help deter bone loss. Of course I also have bone loss/periodontal disease as well, so I'm sure they are related somewhat at least. I fear soon my teeth will fall out and I will be a humpbacked old lady before I turn 60 (I'm almost 58 now). I go to the doc on 10/8 to discuss treatment.Anyone else facing this issue and what are you doing about it?? Would love to hear if any treatments are working (or not) for you, before I discuss with my doctor. Thanks!

I have a friend who just turned 30 who has bone loss (because of an eating disorder) and her doctor gives her some kind of prescription and recommends she lift weights. She also started eating a lot of leafy greens and cheese. Good luck, I hope your treatment is successful.
Geeze.. this is scary, but good luck! I"m 25 and my dentist noticed bone loss in the root of one of my front teeth, but I take calcium supplements, eat cheese, leafy greens and drink milk, so she said the bone loss could be due to trauma (as a kid I had been hit in the face and mouth a few times, had braces, so the trauma leading to the bone loss is more likely in my case).

So sorry to hear this!!! I am 55 and honestly have packed on more muscle in the past two years than in the last 10 by lifting weights and changing the way I eat.My Dr. doesn't even bug me to take the bone-scan anymore.Start small: light weights and high reps...if you can hire a trainer for a few sessions to get you going,it's really helpful! It's truly the BEST thing you can do to try and keep this under control IMO. :) I'm always one to learn towards the preventative and natural things to help out a problem if possible but please be sure if you start a treatment or med that you're following up by being pro-active?Sending hugs and keep us posted!
Oh just stand in line with me - I have the same problem at 44 - from using corticosteroids (ie the no-fun variety, with nasty side-effects). I agree with mjsred - I think, after much research, weight-bearing exercise is the way to go - along with optimum supplementation. Better to know sooner than later - but I sympathize with the shock of it. I had a tubal ligation, d & c and while they were at it, bone scan and mammogram. The last 2 both returned dodgy results. Hope you are doing ok - and don't worry 'osteopaenia' unlike osteoporosis is reversible and manageable!

I too have major bone loss!! It started when I was in my late 30's and has stayed stable all these years...I don't take any prescription for it except for a calcium supplement and vitamin D..... oh and drink milk and eat yougert .You Must do weight bearing exercises, I think that is the only way that I have stayed stable. Good luck to you!!
