Sharond here, filling in for Katie on Hump Day, Hair Day!
My name is Sharond and I will be helping Meg and the other reviewers by filling in as needed while they tend to personal matters! I'm the beauty pinch hitter!
First, a bit about my own hair: at 52, I have never colored it, had a perm in more than 25 years and don’t use a blow dryer, curling iron or heated curlers. I would say that my hair is about as virgin as it can get. I was a white blonde until my late twenties, having my son in my early thirties, my hair started to turn into a golden brown with blonde highlights. At the age of 40, I had lost about half of my fine thin hair and was diagnosed with thyroid problems. What has grown back is a mish-mash of all sorts of hair. Part is still straight and thin, part is uncontrollably curly, and then part is thick with wonderful waves which I love. Best of all, I can only count a few gray’s. I shy away from products that are loaded with ingredients which can’t be pronounced or need a chemist to understand.
I love Lush products. Period. I stumbled across their store while in Cobh, Ireland in 2004. I spent almost my whole vacation allowance in that one shop. I was very surprised to discover they are a large company based out of Vancouver, Canada, though personal with the container products stamped with a sticker of the person who made it. Lush is a “green” company with a lot of their products not wrapped; 75% are vegan, 100% vegetarian, and never tested on animals. Their website is very easy to use with all products with ingredients listed, organized so they are easy to find, quick shipping, and with orders come samples to try. The stores are very generous with samples also. The site also has a forum where people comment about the products or ask for/offer advice.
I opted to try the shampoo, BIG. When I first opened the container and looked at this gelatinous salt, I was a bit hesitant on how to use it. I held the container up to my nose and was mentally transported to the beach, with the mingled scents of the ocean and a margarita in my hand. Diving in, I put a big glob on my finger and rubbed the salt through my hair. I was surprised to find my head so overloaded with bubbles that I need to rinse. The salt felt good on the scalp and my hair was clean, squeaky clean, and really shiny.
My hairdresser noticed that I was using a different product and commented that my hair was in the best condition she had ever seen it. I wash my hair every day and did notice that it tended to dry it out. I found that once or twice a week was about right for me as it is for many women. The more I used the shampoo, the thicker my hair seemed to get. I think it was because of the residues of formershampoo’s and conditioner’s, like the different waxes andparabens, were finally being washed away. BIG comes in an 11.6-ounce cup which makes it hard to take with you when traveling. Do not let the price scare you; a little goes a long way. I would say a small pea amount is more than enough for shoulder-length hair. There is an added benefit to BIG: that works great as a salt rub for buffing dry hands, elbows, feet and more.
Kate here, Things are getting pretty rough these days. My parents tell me that everyone experiences a hard "adjustment period" after college. There are not a million people your age whose only goal is to be your friend (or for the male variety, some sort of goal that relates to seeing you naked). Your hard work doesn't always pay off when you get a paper or test back. You can't sleep in until 10 for an 11 o'clock class and you can't just "not show up" to your work because you are "sick" (ahem...hung-over slash still wearing the same clothes from last night). But I think that my adjustment period has to be a little worse than most. Even bagillionaires are facing rough economic times these days due to the stock market's similarity to Britney Spears' reputation last year. Neither me, nor my college educated roommates, friends, siblings etc can find any sort of job worth anything. It is a struggle to pay the bills, much less indulge in the necessities (splurges) of beauty. For this reason, when I received Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to try, I was extremely relieved, as I had just run out of conditioner and had literally no money to buy a new one.
I have to admit I was a bit nervous to try Jessicurl because I have used a tried and true system for my hair for over two years now, and I am very reluctant to change it. But boy, am I glad I did. Remember how I said things are getting pretty rough these days? Well one thing that is not rough is my hair! Jessicurl made my hair unbelievably soft and I could tell it was working almost immediately when I rubbed it through my hair. After straightening , my hair had a silkiness that I did not think was possible for someone with hair as coarse and thick as mine. This is a WONDERFUL conditioner that did not weigh my hair down at all (although to be fair with hair as coarse and thick as mine I don't think oil grease could really weigh my hair down) and lived up to every claim it made. I would definitely recommend this product, and not just to curly haired ladies who want to improve their curl, but to anyone who wants extra moisture and softness.
Here is what Jessicurl has to say about Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner:
This thick conditioner uses Shea Butter for its moisturizing properties, adding wonderful softness to super dry hair. It also utilizes the beneficial properties of 14 different herbs and spices. Good for daily use on thick, dry hair; it may be too heavy for hair that gets weighed down easily.
Anyone else tried Jessicurl products? Tell me someone else understands what I'm going through to try and make ends meet!
Kate here, with a warning or two..There are some shows on television that I feel should just be deleted for the greater good of society. And no I am not talking about such television masterpieces as MTV's Date My Mom or The Hills which are horrifying reflections of society and thus I watch religiously and are my favorite shows. Rather I am talking about such shows as "Unsolved Mysteries" which traumatized me as a child and means I can never be alone in a house at night. Or the "E! True Hollywood Story: Inside the Mind of Serial Killers" which left me convinced that all of my neighbors are secretly storing and eating dead bodies inside their homes. Recently I watched a television show on the Discovery Channel (my first mistake) called "Super Snake" about how giant snakes hide in trees, stalking people from above before pouncing on them and eating them alive, complete with pictures and video of such acts. I honestly do not know if I will ever be the same. I find it hard to go about my day to day life with a smile with the knowledge that it is possible that I could die from being eaten by a giant snake. You are probably wondering the point of all this so I will get to it. I decided I needed to know more about my new mortal enemy so my boyfriend and I decided to take an overnight trip to the San Diego Zoo. I had recently received bigsexyhair's "Big Shine Shine Spray" and decided to see whether it could truly provide all I needed in terms of shine, hold, and softness for my overnight trip without bringing my entire arsenal of products (plus the less product means the less smell for the giant snakes to sniff you out with).
Here's what bigsexyhair has to say about their product: "Big Shine Shine Spray delivers the ultimate shine with its weightless, non greasy formula."
I tried Big Shine Shine Spray the morning of the zoo trip, and it flattened out ALL of my frizzies (which is saying a lot), made my hair very shiny, and at the end of the day after being windblown and sweating and walking 9 million miles, my hair still looked great and the style had held up very well. It comes in a very small metallic can that fits very easily into an overnight bag or purse and has a very pleasant, clean smell. My one word of warning would be to USE IN MODERATION as too much of this product will leave you looking like a drowned rat (snake food). Also for girls who have stringy hair or problems with oiliness I would say to STAY AWAY because this would only aggravate your problem by a million fold. Overall this is a great product that really made my hair look and feel better and I would recommend it to girls with curly, frizzy or dry hair for a great shine and softness boost!
Anyone else tried the shine spray? Want to join in my petition to rid the world of giant snakes?/b>
Sweetassgal here to bring you the best natural and organic products our Mother Earth has to offer us by the way of Green Chi Tuesdays!
Ahhh how times have changed! My beautiful (and so grown up daughter) had her Junior Year Homecoming dance this weekend. When I was growing up the Homecoming Dance consisted of kids in preppy shirts, jeans, and socked feet only so our school principal wouldn't have a cow about dancing on the basketball court. Homecoming Dance circa 2008 in suburban California....TOTALLY different story. It's all about formal dresses, corsages, dinners out and of course, the perfect updo!
Times being what they are we circumvented the stylist and did the 'do' at home. I'm not completely without talent in this arena so we popped in a chick flick, sat down with bobby pins and curling iron in hand and assessed the situation. My girl has incredibly gorgeous and thick hair but straight as a pin. This is the death of an updo as its so heavy it can fall out and so straight that curls don't hold long unless they're pinned and shellacked into place. Unfortunately today the situation was worsened by the fact that she had JUST washed her hair and we weren't privy to the 'second day dirty hair' that is best for formal do's. What to do...what to do?
Jonathan's Silky Dirt Shine and Define Creme with Essential Waters and 100% Vegan to the rescue! Just a TINY dab of this on your fingertips, run through your hair, and VOILA...you are second day dirty. This can be applied on wet hair for definition or to dry hair to tame frizzies, pump up the shine factor and help style too soft, just cleansed hair. I'm curly and frizzy...my girl is soft and straight. It works for both of us on different levels. A word to the wise however...a little goes a LONG way. If you over apply you will have greasy looking hair. I would not recommend this for people with very thin hair or for those with super oily hair. But I can recommend it for the curlies, wavies and straighties who need a little shine, definition and control!
'Perfect for dull or damaged hair, this grooming creme helps me create amazing supermodel shine plus sexy, natural hair definition. The best part is I can use it on damp hair for extra control or on dry hair for a smooth, lasting finish.' ~ Jonathan
I find this everywhere...Ulta, Sephora, online at just about every beauty website. You can buy a full size tube for $28 or half size for $16. It will last you forever...which is more than I can say about my daughters updo! Home by 11:30 and though she still looked FABULOUS in her red dress and perfectly coiffed hair...out came the pins and down came the hair. All good things must end!
Let's hear from those of you who've got a hair story or know about Jonathan's Silky Dirt...do you love it as much as I do??? GLAM ON megsmakeup gals!
Meg here and I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend! I feel like I need a restful long weekend to recover from my "fun weekend." I swear I'm starting to regress like a 19 year-old girl preacher's daughter on Spring Break. I never went on a spring break so I only have MTV as my guide. God help me.
After a nice long weekend of going everywhere and just general hedonistic behavior things tend to get lost on the wayside. Things like, toilet paper and toothpaste and 4 loads of laundry. Those things are not fun to do or buy. I do actually like when I run out of shampoo and conditioner though. That's always a good 30 minutes well spent in the hair aisle.
I decided to go with Christophe's color extending (you know my color issues) shampoo and conditioner. I'm a sucker for a label and being in Beverly Hills, I know all things Christophe. Did I mention the bottles are pink? Yup, if they slapped the Chanel logo on toilet paper I would have it.
It was around $7 for each big bottle so I wasn't expecting greatness. I shouldn't be such a cynic! This stuff worked great on my overly abused and beaten tresses. I was (big shocker) on the run again so I didn't have time to add my moisture serum in before running out the door. It wasn't as great as if I had taken the time to put it on but my hair didn't look bad without it. Not bad at all!
Christophe says"A key ingredient in the Color Extending formula is Heliogenol, which is extracted from sunflower seeds and protects hair color against damaging ultraviolet rays. Vitamin C and creatine round out the formula's ingredients, strengthening and revitalizing color-treated hair."
So while the rest of me may be making up for lost time and having a great, not quite wholesome party. I atleast know my hair is being very well protected! All for around $15 for both items total! That's the smartest thing I've done this week! Any other ladies want to chime in on Christophe Beverly Hills, found right at your local CVS?
Meg here! Before I start can we send some good wishes off in our hearts to Gigi our resident Drugstore Deal Diva whose taking this week to be with her family.
I' here today filling in with not a drugstore deal but a new way to get sun-kissed locks without frying your hair or looking like a skunk. I hope all of you grab a pen and write this new process down so you can remember to ask your stylist about it for your next appointment!
It's called balayage, from those chic Parisians where balayage translates in English to "SWEEP." I heard about this new technique from Martina Harrer at Clark Nova hair salon in LA. It makes sense Martina would be the expert on this. Her salon is all European flavor with internationally trained stylists! It's like a Benetton ad in there!
Out with the foil, it never really gets the roots and it's hard to control how much time your hair is cooking while wrapped up out of sight. The balayage technique is all about the artistry and controlled with a paintbrush. Your hair becomes a cannvass and there is no where near the damage of traditional highlights.
Seriously, Are you writing this term down? You know you're going to forget so get to jotting.
Clark Nova is a great, unpretentious place. Because Martina is European she doesn't really crave the celeb crowd like her Beverly Hills counterparts. She's very funny about it. She had an actor in her chair and everyone was congratulating him. Martina said "Oh, Happy Birthday!" Her staff waited until the actor left to let Martina know that it wasn't his birthday. He had just won the Best Actor Oscar.
So everyone gets the same treatment at Clark Nova, you don't have to be rich or famous. You do have to trust me and call over there (If you're in LA) or call your local stylist and check out Balayage!
Kate here with more tales from the Crypt of hair disasters and hair miracles. I am a girl. Well duh Kate you might be thinking to yourself. Obviously you are a girl...how else could you be so fabulous? And have breasts. Well actually as too many HBO specials have shown me, you don't necessarily have to be a girl to have breasts...but I digress. My point is that I am a girl and thus, like every other girl in the history of all time, I as a young impressionable youth used the o so notorious product "Sun In." Like most of you, I had dreams of transforming from a braces covered, giant un-plucked and/or completely shaved off eyebrows ridden, pale, frizzy haired horror of a teenager into a Britney Spears pre-shaved head/VMA meltdown blonde goddess with sun lightened highlights. And like most of you, my hair turned bright orange at the crown of my head and striped orange everywhere else. For this reason I was a little skeptical when I received alo sun's (lack of capitalization their's, not mine) "Lemon Lights", a product designed with basically the same intention of Sun-In, to lighten your hair using the sun's natural rays. Lucky for me, it does not use the same ingredients.
Here's what alo sun has to say about their product:
"Lightens hair naturally while you have fun in the sun. On the beach or on the street heightens highlights anywhere under the sun. Perfect for blondes, as well as all shades of lighter brunette."
I finally worked up the courage to use this product, convincing myself that my hair is so blonde anyways that it couldn't do much to hurt it. And I was right, however, it also didn't really do much of anything at all. I worked the product through my hair as instructed and allowed my hair to dry in the sun. I did not see much of a difference so I repeated the process. After the second time I went inside and washed my hair as it was now the consistency of play-do after being put through the play-do spaghetti maker. After drying my hair, I did feel my hair looked brighter and lighter...however this could also have been due to the fact that my hair was now clean and not polluted with a weeks worth of hairspray/dirt/spray tan/frosting (don't ask) etc etc. I have since used it again, and I do think that it does help my hair to stay light and not fade from the pretty white blonde I have when leaving the hairdressers to the horrid yellow, brassy blonde when I arrive again. But I could not with any confidence say how this product would affect those with darker hair. All in all, I would only recommend this product for those girls with light blonde hair who just want to keep their hair color fresh and bright in between hair colors (and to do that even better and without as much damage probably, a blue or purple shampoo works wonders).
I'm not even going to ask if there are any other Sun-In survivors out there so just go ahead and start spilling! Anyone else brave enough to give the idea another try?
Xstatic817 here and not to step on the impeccably pedicured toes of our drugstore deal gal Gigi, but this week I just felt inspired to write about one of my favorite home hair colors - straight outta CVS.
I realized last week when I was choosing my new shade that I have now been dyeing my hair for half my life; I’m 28 and my first coloring experience was when I was 14. A brief hair color history: Anyone remember Glints? Well, that was my first foray and it was a temporary dye that lasted about 2 weeks and never actually showed up in my dark brown hair.
Did I mention that my goal color was that of Claire Danes from My So-Called Life? My blonde best friend at the time was able to achieve this color - accidentally -- using another new semi-permanent dye called Natural Instincts in a color called Cinnaberry. She wanted an auburn tint; she got Angela Chase. I got frustrated. Then I got purple hair from some burgundy hair dye that I thought would make me into the object of Jordan Catalano’s affection. Since then I’ve tried pretty much every dye on the shelves -- seriously, I don’t even want to list all of the brands because there are just too many.
A few highlights (pardon the pun) of my hair coloring life
1) The reverse-skunk look my mom did with a home coloring kit to be in high school. We were so afraid that we’d miss the roots that we ended up ONLY getting the roots. Thankfully, this led to her paying for 2 years worth of beautiful blonde and caramel highlights at an actual salon.
2) When I bleached my hair a month before college graduation. It was short then, I’d never been BLONDE blonde, I was broke, and I decided it would be easy to bleach my hair. Heck, I even read up on how to do it on the internet. Well, it was blond...ish - orange-y blonde, I’d say, and I wore it with pride -- even as my parents cringed during graduation pictures and made multiple comments about the “value” of my ivy league education.
3) My Bettie Page phase. Technically, this is still going on - I love all things rockabilly, leopard, retro, cherry and so on. Last year, I decided to dye my hair black. Not once, but twice. I enjoyed it, but I just can’t keep a hair color for more than a few months so this spring I decided I was over it and wanted lighter hair. I decided to go all out and splurge at a fancy NYC salon and ended up at the one that the likes of J. Lo and Jessica Simpson go to. Well, $500 dollars and 8 hours later my black hair had been stripped, re-colored, and highlighted. I looked like a million bucks.
Problem is, it wasn’t me. Maybe it’s because I felt that I looked like everyone else in NY and Long Island, where I live. I was tortured. I didn’t have the money, obviously, to go back to a professional but honestly, I just hated looking at myself in the mirror. So I decided to go back to my roots (and the hair puns just keep on comin’). I wanted red hair and bought Natural Instincts in Cinnaberry.
It’s super simple to use and takes almost no time at all. In fact, this is one of the first times I’ve dyed my hair myself and not gotten hair color splatter all over the bathroom. I’ve never done the strand tests or allergy tests; sorry, I just don’t have the patience for that. The resulting color? Well, I was ready to call over Ricky and Rayanne. I think the color took well because of the blonde highlights I had, but of course, there are now sooo many color options that I think even if you have dark hair, you’ll be able to get the color you want. And my hair felt freakin’ amazing! Clairol says: “Natural Instincts is rich in antioxidants and free of ammonia, so you can feel free to use it month after month. And the more often you color, the healthier your hair looks!” I know, it seems counter-intuitive. I realize my hair isn’t actually healthier, but it does look super healthy and shiny, and hey, I’ll take it!
So, what’s your favorite home hair dye? Anyone else out there have a hair color to dye for? (sorry, I just love the puns today!)
Katehrm777 here, I have a friend who went had a therapist in high school. No real reason, just her parents thought it would be helpful to talk about the issues that face teenage girls today. I never really understood but looking back, this was perhaps the most brilliant strategy of beauty self-preservation of all time. I, however, was not so lucky. Bad day? Lets go indoor tanning obsessively for 3 weeks straight! The sun makes you happy! And nothing looks better than a great tan! Bad grade on a test? Obviously attempting to bleach my eyebrows to "match" my hair will cure such anguish. Fight with the parents? I bet shaving my upper lip would actually work in reality and would cause my make-up to go on SO much smoother! And of course, everyone's favorite, a break up with a boyfriend. My high school boyfriend and I broke up a lot (who didn't?). There was a lot of hair dying to emerge a new sexy goddess and make him realize what he was missing etc etc that went on in high school. My hair has been red, orange, grey, green, black, white, burgundy, maroon, and yellow due to emotional instability. Really, I think having a therapist instead would have ended up saving me money. Moral of the story: my hair was EXTREMELY damaged. Like won't grow longer because any new growth just snaps right off. Redken Extreme Anti-Snap completely turned my hair around. I have been using it for two years now and have stopped dying my hair (hmmmm around the same time I got with my new boyfriend...probably unrelated) and my hair has stopped snapping, has started growing and continues to get healthier and shinier. Now this product is not an instant-fix, but with time and dedicated use can really improve the health of your hair. This is especially helpful to those who are trying to grow out their hair, as it keeps your hair from splitting and reduces the amount of dead ends that have to be cut off at your hairdressers. And it smells FABULOUS. Here's what Redken has to say about their product:
"Anti-Snap leave-in treatment fortifies the damaged areas of hair and helps reduce breakage. Redken's exclusive Interbond Conditioning System delivers a unique 3D Repair Complex of proteins, ceramide and lipids to help provide internal strength, cuticle reinforcement and protective resurfacing."
So...any other teenage survivors relying on Redken to cure their split end woes?
Katehrm777 here with another installment of Hump Day Hair Day to help everyone achieve beautiful, bouncy, bodyfull (made up word), bodacious hair!
I went to UC Berkeley for college (see above for proof of my excellent skills of alliteration). There are a lot of great people at Berkeley. There are people who want to save the world, and really smart people and driven people and intimidating people. There are not, however, a lot of particularly well groomed people. I could walk around Berkeley and feel like I had an edge on people if I had washed my hair within the past 2 weeks and did not have dreadlocks. Knowing the difference between eyeliner and mascara made me a beauty maven. Having bleached blonde hair with a full face of makeup and wearing heels to class? Made me a bit of a freak.
However I recently moved to Newport Beach. Now I feel un-groomed if my hair is in a ponytail. People here not only wash their hair on a regular basis but they get it washed and styled by a professional EVERY TIME (I am not kidding...terrifying. Slash I am super jealous and wish I had the time and money to have it done to me). Everyone is blonde. Just wearing my hair down and a clean outfit doesn't cut it anymore. So I have been wanting to add a little bit more style to my hair and I was thinking of going and investing in a good hairspray. Instead I got Biolage Freeze Fix Hair Spray to test.
Here is what Biolage has to say about Freeze Fix:
"Biolage styling strengthens and shines to optimize style results. STRONGStem Technology blends strong-cling polymers, strengthening macro-lipids, high-climbing akebia vine and resilient sugarcane. Biolage Freeze Fix Hair Spray is a humidity-resistant, water-free, fast-dry spray for all-day control. Lifts and locks styles into place with firm hold and aerial support."
It all sounds very scientific and confusing to me, but what I have to say is that this stuff works really well! I always had a bit of an aversion to hairspray because I had images of Aqua Net-style 80's hair, and I felt like it takes away the shine and bounciness of hair. But this stuff holds your style without getting sticky (as long as you don't use too much) and actually adds shine! I tried the firm hold, but there is also a light hold, a medium hold and an ultra firm hold. When I teased my hair before I went out the other night, it held through an entire night of dancing and didn't frizz at all. All in all, I would say if you are trying to step up your style and need a bit of hold this stuff definitely does the trick.
Any other ladies love themselves some hairspray or can't get enough of the Biolage line?
