Hi everyone! It's Kellie here, filling in for our beloved Gigi today. Sometimes there is nothing more comforting than lounging on your couch, snuggling under a blanket, and watching a fabulous romantic comedy. Although I could do this anytime, for obvious reasons this is a delightful Fall/Winter activity. I find this to be a highly relaxing and rejuvenating experience. One of my favorites is the 1995 Sandra Bullock classic, While You Were Sleeping. Come on, you remember the light and frothy film about a girl who is in love with two brothers, one of whom is in a coma. Of course heartfelt hilarity ensues but also good things happen while someone is sleeping. As I recently learned, good things can happen for all of us while we’re sleeping too! If you are looking to rejuvenate your skin the way a good movie rejuvenates the soul then read on.
Getting a good night of sleep is important for a myriad of reasons. I for one had never really considered what sleep did for my skin. When you sleep, your skin has its best chance for optimum self repair. Your skin cells tend to regenerate at a higher rate during sleep. Additionally, while you sleep your skin care products have a greater potential to succeed without degradation from other cosmetics, sunlight, and pollutants.

Besides my morning and night routine, twice a week I do more of a facial treatment. After cleansing I scrub my face with Alba's Sea Algae Enzyme Facial Scrub. It's by far my favorite scrub. Most of the scrubs I have ever used are too fruity, or too harsh, or I break out with them.
I came across the Alba line when I was shopping in Whole Foods. This was a few years ago, when I had a bit more money at my disposal and I was doing all my shopping there. I would buy my groceries, skin care, hair care, body care products, everything! Now, sadly, I purchase only a few things there and do the bulk of my shopping at Farmer's Markets, Trader Joe's, and Rite Aid now that they carry many of these organic and natural lines.
Hello, Eleni here! I have a confession to make: I love Chanel products. Every time Megan comes to my place she runs out of my bathroom screaming at me "when did you get this Chanel cream?", "Have enough Chanel already?", "Why aren't you using the products I gave you to review?", "Are you cheating on the other companies that love us?". It's usually at this point when I open the wine to distract her.
Honestly, I have at least 10 favorite brands that I use almost daily ("too-much-free-time-alert"), but Chanel is like my desert island item. I have a long lasting, loving, co-dependent relationship with the Chanel Hydramax Active Moisture Cream. I never want to be anywhere without it. Even if I take small breaks using other moisturizers, I always go back to it.
Maybe it's because it smells like soap, or maybe it's because due to its blue-ish color, every time I put it on, my skin tone looks more even and I glow. One morning I put it on right after washing my face and when I went back inside my boyfriend asked me how I managed to put my makeup on so fast.
Goddess Granny who just loves a good ol' "Titan Clash": Godzilla vs.Mothra...Alien vs. Predator...Megan vs. Angelina...(Note to Ms. Fox: you are totally STUNNING girl and being compared to one of THE most gorgeous creatures to ever walk the earth which IMO isn't a bad thing so please stopping whining about it and just smile/say thank-you?) It's always good mud-slinging-fun and even a bit Larry the Cable Guy redneck-Titan to really get rowdy and cheer loudly for your favorite in any arena! No lacking of any bouts or battles these days,it's more like you have to dodge all those soggy beer cups flying around. We all know it's an insane maze of products out there and as consumers and dedicated-divas,we need ALL the help we can get to navigate these snarky and sharky waters of beauty! I am devoting this post to some serious personal homework I recently finished. I was more than willing to "battle it out" with my vanity as the ring for the sake of Meg's!
Like so many of us,I have been on a lifelong quest for that Grail of foundations: why oh why is it that when you find something PERFECT about one, it's usually also got something less-than as well, be it price, availability, color-range, scent , SPF or not, coverage....the list of requirements for many of us is simply constantly changing and never ending. What may have been perfection a year ago might now be tossed into a drawer...am I right? Also, the evolving technology and range of choices would take a MUCH tougher chic than I to wallow through!
I decided to narrow down exactly what I "needed" at this point from my foundation: ease of application for rushed mornings, wearability in terms of staying fresh and color-true, a bit of real coverage, and something that I didn't cringe over the price every time I needed a different shade or a replacement. I wear foundation everyday so it helps to "keep it real!" Little or no scent and minimal SPF as both tend to irritate me.I personally don't wear mineral foundations although I respect that many love them so they weren't a consideration for me.
Gigi here! My fear of having a wrinkled face or throat—a.k.a. my dreaded “Turkey Neck”—has its origins in childhood. I am elated not to have crows’ feet or frown lines. Unfortunately, three repugnant horizontal creases mar my neck, also inherited but unwanted (a mix of good and bad genes from both parents).
Rewind to third grade: My mother had made me a beautiful dress with a white Peter Pan collar to wear on the day my Catholic school had pictures taken of the students. I still recall wriggling around, attempting to push the pique fabric up to hide my imperfections. What stopped me was a very impatient photographer who screamed, “Hey Red, quit playing around and stop squirming!” The shade of my face replicated my hair color.
One year later, at age ten, I found myself standing in our silent lunch line in the cafeteria. Talking was not permitted until we received our stew made from unknown animal parts or chicken with all of the trimmings, feathers included! We were arranged alphabetically, and Gigi Sommers stood two people in front of her boyfriend and love, Tom Townsend (name changed to protect the love-struck). It was my time to shine. I undid the first button of my uniform blouse and seductively slid the strap of my plaid jumper slightly down my shoulder. I stood in a model’s hesitation pose, being sure to hide my throat but still resemble Raquel Welch in “Barbarella” or Bridget Bardot in “And God Created Woman.” I knew he was looking—I felt it. And then my academic life as I knew it in this particular school came to a swift end.
Two girls at the beginning of the line were whispering, and our nun, with full, long taffeta habit and veil, decided to run and halt their words to spare them from the wrath of hell. What she missed was my foot, toe pointed attractively. In retrospect, the sound of the “whoosh” as the taffeta hit the tile was hysterical, but she thought that I had done it purposely. I vaguely recall her screaming, “And you are supposed to be a nice girl! I’ll make you a nice girl, Gigi Marie Sommers!” before she pummeled me into the ground, beating any and every part of my body until I fainted. My parents had never hit us in any way, and I wound up transferred to a public school shortly thereafter.
My husband and I could purchase a summer home with the cash I’ve spent on serums and products for my wrinkle woes. They seem to work initially, but I am always disappointed. Since Meg has led us to Beauty Ticket and prices are ridiculously discounted, I’m considering it a discount/drugstore this week to share a product straight from Heaven itself—“Too Faced’s Extreme Wrinkle Filler” in a tube. This is a multi-tasking miracle makeup primer.
The tube is clever, shaped like the barrel of an injection needle, with gradations as to quantity of product. It claims to fill lines without the “ouch” of Botox needles, and it works. I am on my third tube, and the benefits! This is more viscous than a serum, with a light ecru appearance. Unlike creams, there is absolutely no oily residue left behind to annoy or stain. The unique formula is to be used under makeup where wrinkles are an issue, but I also find that applying over my entire face works as a foundation itself. Wear is extended and greatly enhanced with a luminous appearance. Whether you wear makeup or not, this is a product that belongs in your vanity. In my case, it remains in the top shelf—front and center—of my Sears Craftsmen professional huge red cart (meant for power tools and garage necessities but great housing for cosmetics), along with my divided bait and tackle boxes. And some people feel I have a problematic fixation with makeup—how ridiculous!
Meg bringing you some PRICELESS INFO! Here’s a familiar scenario: You’re hitting the after-Christmas sales, and some of your favorite cosmetics and skincare products are marked down to make room for the new spring lines. You’re tempted to snag a few of each to use throughout the year, but then the little nagging voice in your head asks, “Isn’t this stuff only good for, like, six months or something?"
Let’s face it. We’ve become so indoctrinated by the beauty industry hype that it’s hard to distinguish fact from fiction. So, I’ve asked Lindsay and Jill, seasoned beauty industry veterans and owners of BeautyTicket.com, to help me navigate the endless sea of information.
So, what is the average shelf life of cosmetics? The shelf life of unopened, properly stored cosmetics is anywhere from 2 to 5 years, depending on the product. (Higher end products formulated with premium ingredients tend to last longer than drugstore brands, making them more of a bargain in the long run.) Because beauty products generally have such a long shelf life, there is currently no U.S. law that requires cosmetic manufacturers to print expiration dates on the labels of cosmetic products. The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) [1] only reports that "voluntary shelf-life guidelines developed by the cosmetic industry vary, depending on the product and its intended use." In Europe, the Cosmetics Directive does require a "use by" date, but only on products that have a shelf life of less than 2 ½ years.
So, if a brand is discontinuing my favorite mascara or lipstick, it’s okay to buy a few and hold on to them?
Sure. It makes sense that beauty companies would prefer that you to toss out products every three to six months. (After all, that’s how they sell in new collections. Can you blame them?) But it should really be choice, not fear of impending doom, that drives each of us to spend more money on a new lipstick or eye shadow. That being said, keep them sealed and store them properly to ensure that they last. Otherwise, you’re just wasting your money.
Jeanasina here! Rumpelstiltskin was probably a good candidate for L'Oreal's new COLLAGEN Moisture Filler! I'm not sure, but if somebody back in storybook times named their child Rumpelstiltskin, it was probably because there was some seriously rumpled up skin on the child!
When you just read the word Rumpelstiltskin, for SURE, your immediate mind image was not pretty right? The creature I envision was born with saggy pockets of skin all over his face - one nasty face indeed! Well L'Oreal has come out with a new line of product called Collagen Moisture Filler! I bet they have been testing it on the rumple guy himself! His face could probably endure YEARS of testing! I have been watching their compelling ads on the television. As a matter of fact, every time this ad comes on the TV I have to stop and watch it! I know it is absolutely crazy of me to think that THIS time, THIS product will bring me back my lost Collagen! But honey, I start to believe!! I zero in on every sentence they are using to convince me that this stuff is going to WORK! YES LADIES!!! THIS TIME IT'S GONNA WORK! I'm hoping that, probably, after about three days of using this cream, my own friend's will barely be able to recognize me! It's going to work THIS TIME right?!
Ok, so this is going to be happening right now while you are reading this...it will almost be like you are here! Going into the bathroom now and going toward this miracle working, loose skin tightening MIRACLE in a purple container! Talk amongst yourselves until I get back. If you hear me yell or scream, it will ONLY be because I put this cream on my face and then turned and looked into the mirror and was YOUNG again...with FIRM skin again! THEN, and only THEN will I be screaming the brand name of this particular cream I'm about to try and saying YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO BUY THIS!
So...I'm back! I bet you hardly recognized me right? I bet you are just dying to ask me what I have done to my face! Does it look tight yet? You know, on the down side, IF this COLLAGEN really makes your skin get tight again (just watch the commercial!) Anyway...if this COLLAGEN really makes your skin get tight – WHAT IF something went haywire with one of the batches of COLLAGEN cream because the plant hired a diabolical potion maker who tampered with one of the batches of COLLAGEN and he didn't put any 'use by' date on it so maybe, just maybe THAT batch will OVERTIGHTEN your skin! How creepy would THAT be? I'm sure that's not going to happen to anybody any of us right?
Sweetassgal here speaking a name I use A LOT...Juara. It's no secret around Megs that I have this entire line up on a pedestal and if you ask me that's precisely where it belongs. A while back I reviewed the Juara Rice Facial Cleanser and I was so enamored of it that I wrote the company and asked for as many samples as they would give me to distribute amongst the curious here at Megsmakeup. Wonderful Michael from Juara sent me enough to give out plenty of samples and really hook up Kellie76 which was the main girl I wanted to see if we could help. I've asked each of the lovelies that I sent samples to for a review...so here's your chance ladies! Tell us the truth because we all know everyone is different and each of us has our own special needs. For my combo skin, easily irritated by harsh cleansers this soft and gentle sulfate and paraben free formula is skin perfection!
For today's review I'm going to highlight the face cleansers perfect pair...Juara Rice Facial Scrub. It's the same intoxicating scent as the face wash, with the same silky creaminess but with tiny super fine microbeads. When exfoliating I like to feel like my skin is being polished...not torn. This is of particular importance to me because I tend to be red and anything that is too harsh will aggravate my skin. The point of gentle exfoliation is to bring out your inner glow, not turn that glow into a bonfire. Juara, used 2 - 3 times a week accomplishes this with grace and elegance. As I've said before, I look forward to washing my face with this line all day long. It's not a part of my routine...it's the complete enjoyment of the experience that completes my nightly ritual.
Utilizing active botanicals such as rice, tamarind, turmeric, candlenut oil, healing teas and red sandalwood, Juara combines time-honored recipes for skin health and well-being with the best in modern technology and innovation to deliver efficacious and elegant treatments of the highest quality. The Rice Facial Scrub is fortified with rice starch rich in skin conditioning amino acids which prevents moisture loss. This to me is the key element of both the face wash and the scrub...its ability to power pack the moisture with ZERO left over residue or oil! My skin is SO unbelievably soft after using either of them that I can't stop petting my own skin. Fine for the nights at home...creepy when I'm drifting off in line at Target rubbing myself and mumbling sweet nothings under my breath.
MissRo here! So, I'm reading my favorite news site this morning, The Huffington Post, and in the Style section they highlight Bazaar magazine's September issue. Famed photographer Peter Lindbergh did a photoshoot with eight supermodels not wearing a stitch of makeup. The photos are beautiful, all in black and white. The models look like they all just got out of bed (if I looked like that when I got out of bed, life would be blissful). Their hair is a perfect, tousled, bed-head mess, they are wearing either white wife-beaters, tank tops, or long-sleeve t-shirts, and I don't think a hint of photoshop was used.
Within that same post, they entice you to also read a post by Verena von Pfetten's called "Less Is The New More: The Case For Taking Off Your Makeup". First, this post was written a year and a half ago??? Second, I disagree with what she has to say.
