MARCO PELUSI SUMMERTIME HAIR TIPS FOR GUYS AND GIRLS!

hair
Meg Favorite Marco Pelusi hair giving all you summer babies tips for your hair! It’s summertime, and most of you like to wear a brighter color in your hair – even you guys out there may wish to go a bit lighter.  Oftentimes a lighter coppery red or reddish tone is a great choice to add into your color during summertime.  A color change such as adding red or lighter colors sometimes seems to fade more quickly than the regular blonde or brunette color that has already been done.  As a general note, any kind of red color is the first to fade, because red contains the largest dye molecules.  Whether you’re a redhead, blonde or brunette, if you are going even a bit lighter/redder, you should always ask your stylist/colorist what he/she could do to prevent hair from premature color fade.  This may include leaving the color on a bit longer or mixing up separate formulas for the base, mid-shaft and ends.  Be sure to ask if he/she is doing a typical “pull through” or using a fresh color formula.  Ask if the formula will be on the mid-shaft and ends and for how long.  Then you need to evaluate which haircare products you’re using at home and you need to make sure that your products are specifically formulated to repair and moisturize, as well as prevent hair from premature color fade.  Lastly, as a general rule, you don’t need to shampoo as often which will help retain your hair color for a longer period of time.

Along the same lines, when you guys and gals go lighter and/or redder during summertime, many of you have eyebrow tone or eyelash tone that needs to be adjusted to match the new color.  It is definitely possible to tint either or both, and this is a procedure I recommend for a total look of beauty.  Eyebrow and eyelash tinting is very easy to do but I do recommend going to a salon rather than doing it yourself to ensure that your color is in sync and to ensure safety.  For eyebrows, it’s about a 15-20 minute process.  For eyelashes, again, it’s an easy procedure that takes approximately 20 minutes.  The color lasts between three and four weeks and fades gradually on-tone.

GROUNDED IN NATURE WHIPPED BODY CREAM IN WHITE CLOVER!

Mon, 06/29/2009 - 8:22pm

Sweetassgal here popping the cork on some Veuve Clicquot to celebrate ONE YEAR as Megs Green Chi Tuesdays reviewer!  It was just last June that I threw my hat in the ring for Drugstore Deals and ended up Green Chi instead.  Thank you, thank you, thank you Meg...it has been a WONDERFUL year and I can't even begin to express to you how much you and the wonderful people of this site have enriched my life.  I am grateful for your friendship and humbled by your incomparable ability to support and love each other.  My soulmate's in makeup and all things beauty...I thank you all for the light you've brought to my life.  XOXOXOXO

Now on to one the the BIGGEST lights in my life...my mother!  I have been blessed with the BEST mother on earth.  In all seriousness I think she was just born to Mommie!  And not just to me and my sister (welcome to Meg's ashleereece) but to anyone she comes into contact with.  Walk in my mom's front door and you are immediately treated to her down home Southern hospitality.  She'll make sure you have a cool drink in hand, a plate of damn good food to eat and advice on how to deer proof your garden by the time you leave!  She's just all around amazing and I don't think there's one person who has ever met her that wouldn't say the same.  So why was it when I was 25 that I so flippantly ignored some very good advice of hers?  Post traumatic stress from my gut wrenching breakup of a 7 year relationship I guess.  But still, when Mom kindly mentioned that the ash grey color of my dry elbows and rough feet might not be the sexiest thing for a new guy in my life to rub up to I simply tuned it out.  When she showed up to my apartment with a tube of Fancy Feet foot scrub I knew she meant business.  Since then I've been almost overly concerned about my elbows and tootsies.  I probably make my hubby nuts because just about every night I sit straight up in bed, rub lotion on both and watch reruns of Frazier on Lifetime. It's my thing.

Meg sent me a little tub of Grounded in Nature's Whipped Body Cream in White Clover in my last shipment and I was super excited to work it into my nightly ritual.  My daughter Samantha.Provost (welcome ALSO to Meg's girlie...you're as addicted as I am!) immediately opened it and took a whif.  AAAAAAHHHHHH was her first reaction and I concur.  This stuff smells SO good and the light scent really lingers.  I put it on at night and wake up to the lovely scent first thing in the morning.  I'm not really good at identifying scents but I know what I like and this is the kind of smell everyone would enjoy.  It's light and lovely and not too girlie to be used by a guy.  I'm also thrilled to mention its paraben free and made with natural shea butter, glycerin and Vitamin E while also being cruelty free (why is that even necessary these days!).  On the moisture scale I'd give it an 8 because it does make my skin really soft but it doesn't seal like an intense or medicated moisturizer would which is also why it doesn't feel greasy.  Therefore its a perfect every day lotion...not too heavy...not too light...just right!

FANTASY PARENTS!

Mon, 06/29/2009 - 9:12am
  • Miscellaneous

beaver
Tantejoan here! Recently Meg, in her incredible generosity, gave many of us the opportunity to share our still-haunting recollections of painful or downright dysfunctional childhoods.  My own is so far behind me, me being ancient and all, that it was surprising to discover, looking into the rear-view mirror, that the view can still be blurred by tears.  But children, being incredibly resilient creatures, often find unusual and creative ways to make the unbearable bearable. I had a wardrobe of coping mechanisms, including the support of much-older siblings and some loving, if understandably distracted, aunts and uncles, but my chief avenues of escape from pain were always reliable and, in many ways, shaped me into the person I am today.  I found refuge in the Philadelphia Public Library, my neighborhood’s wonderful movie theaters and in my best babysitter, “Million Dollar Movie.”

This morning, while showering and crying over the still-fresh deaths of FF and MJ (I do my best crying in the shower) I started thinking of Michael’s abusive childhood, and then I thought of how he, as had so many performers, turned to his talent as a way out.  When I posted a response to Angie’s wonderful tribute thread I mentioned Fred Astaire, and then this morning, dripping wet and unable to distinguish between the shower stream and my tears, I suddenly remembered that I had had a wonderful set of parents in my childhood.  I had my Fantasy Parents, Fred and Esther.

When my parents disappointed me, neglected me, burdened me with unrealistic expectations or conflicting requirements, I could retire to my room and remember that I had parents who loved me, cherished me and always taught me Wonderful Things.  My Fantasy Father, Fred Astaire, being the most elegant, tasteful, charming and talented of men, taught me my first lessons in making hard work look effortless.  He always was well dressed, so much so that he, rather than any woman of the screen, gave me my first lessons in Style.  He wore a tie for a belt, for goodness sake, and instantly made regular belts seem, well, vulgar.  And with Ginger (my Fantasy Aunt, but interesting not my Fantasy Mother -- more of that later) or a series of other wonderful ladies, Father Fred showed me that dance was the ultimate expression of romance.  Plus he could dance with things, an amazing talent I could be proud of.  He danced with coat racks, and steam pipes, and shoes!  And he was funny, and sang so beautifully that Irving Berlin said, given a choice of any singer on earth to introduce one of his songs, he would choose My Dad.  I loved Fred Astaire to death, and I love him now.

BACK TO BACK TO CALI CALI!

bc

Meg here! Back to Cali and my Boston trip was great! I will post some pictures of my trip. I learned a very valuable lesson. Always bring a buffer! Megken traveled with me and it made a world of difference.

The really only frustrating part of my trip was I had pretty limited computer access so I'll be playing a bit of catch up this week! There was another annoyance. Not so much frustrating as it is just a part of life as a lady. Yup, about 10 minutes before my nephew's 3rd birthday party there were the start of some awful cramps and then everybody's favorite "friend" flow showed up. No big deal. I was at my sister's house. She's 28 years old. I'll just use one of her pads or tampons. I look under the sink. Nothing. I look in the closet. Nothing. So I call her.

Meg: Eileen, where are your tampons and things?

Eileen: Oh, I don't have those anymore I'm on a new birth control and I never get my period. You should go on it.

End of the story. I found a tampon in my makeup case (Thanks Period Guardian Angel.)  Beginning of the story? "I never get my period anymore."

I am a birth control disaster. The pill (I don't care how mild it is) makes me absolutely batshit crazy. A complete and total loon. I am totally allergic to latex. Like, hospital trip emergency room reaction to latex so I tried Depo Provera. I had a girlfriend that swore Depo was the answer to my prayers. Only get your period 3x a year? A quick shot every few months? She had no side effects so I thought! "Let me at it!"

My ex said when we use to go out to eat he never knew why he would have me order dinner. He said he should have just ordered it to go. I would spend the entire dinner yapping to him and other people and sipping my cocktail and taking a few bites. Then the check would come, I'd get it in a doggie bag and eat it the next day.

About a month into my Depo I would eat the entire dinner when we would go out to eat. I would also eat my appetizer and every bit of my dessert.

Two months into my depo I would eat my appetizer, dinner dessert and then look at my ex and say "Are you going to eat all that?" As I longingly gazed at his meal.

RIP Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson

Fri, 06/26/2009 - 11:19am
  • Miscellaneous

Meg here so I landed in Boston yesterday and as soon as we were able to turn our "hand held devices" on I checked my emails and couldn't believe the emails coming in. Of course, it was very sad to read that Farah Fawcett had passed away. Her illness was prett well documented and public so while sad, not really a shock. The rest of the emails coming in I was gobsmacked! What? No way. I couldn't believe it. Michael Jackson? Yikes.

I was lucky enough to have danced with Michael Jackson about a year ago (I know pretty amazing) and it is definitely my top "celebrity encounter". I have had limited computer access being away and Sweetassgal asked if she could write a little something on the passing of Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Ofcourse. Her post follows. Always remember to live life to the fullest!-XOXO Meg

Sweetassgal is not feeling so sweet today everyone.  I am truly, truly saddened by the passing of two of the BIGGEST icons of my youth.  God bless the souls of the original California "IT" girl Farrah Fawcett and the one of a kind Michael Jackson...forever our King of Pop.  Our hearts are heavy as our thoughts and prayers go out to their family and friends.

Ms. Farrah...how I LOVED playing Charlies Angels as a child.  I remember running around my Aunt Pammie's back yard in my Charlies Angels T-shirt, shortie running shorts, rainbow tube socks and bright blue and yellow Roo's...wildly whipping my hair around and making a gun with my thumbs and forefingers.  I would close my powder blue painted eyes in the warm afternoon sun and imagine I was chasing the bad guys while still maintaining my bright beaming smile and rocking the perfect feathered hair.  No one pulled of feathered the way you did.  You gave us all something to look up to and aspire to be.  Not just because you were so beautiful and vivacious...but because you ushered in a whole generation of girls who weren't afraid to go out there and kick ass alongside the boys!  RIP...Farrah.  You will be missed.

ST. IVES INVIGORATING SCRUB!

Thu, 06/25/2009 - 7:54am
  • Drugstore Deals
  • Body

ives
Gigi here! Time to come clean, literally and figuratively.  I know what you’re doing, just like the rest of us—displaying an expensive container of an exfoliant in your guest bathroom so that guests will think, “How does she afford that?”  Meanwhile, you stockpile an arsenal of St. Ives’ Apricot Scrub.

This warm, muggy season can be unduly harsh to skin.  Moisturizers which may work wonders for you throughout the rest of the year can cause problems.  Sunscreen is a blessing, but several have comedogenic components.  Add to that perspiration itself: it can serve as a breeding ground for lovely bacteria (picture the green characters from the Mucinex ad) or, if your complexion is quite dry, exacerbate that problem.  Dermatologists suggest washing your face several times daily.  I love outdoor activities.  Where to conduct my toilette?  Push livestock aside and use their water troughs?  Beg off from a game of volleyball to cleanse with a flowered parasol over my shoulder?  I think not.

The answer is clear—exfoliate daily, perhaps twice.  St. Ives became known for its “Gentle Apricot Scrub” (nicely priced at about $4.79).  This admirable company created some smooth moves; the ingredients include Jojoba Beads.  Not only do these make short work of lifting imbedded impurities, but the beads are uniform in size.  Other natural scrubs incorporate uneven pieces of walnut shell and seeds, which can damage rather than benefit.

St. Ives has branched out into more Apricot scrubs—“Invigorating,” “Blemish and Blackhead Control,” and “Renew and Firm.”  Evidently they haven’t dealt with Megheads before.  We read labels and analyze ingredients before we throw both caution and dollars to the wind and succumb to marketing ploys (of course, I jest).  What does tend to happen is that four formulas can cloud anyone’s judgment; rather than stand in an aisle and study, it is easier to buy all.  St. Ives knows this, so allow me to give you a “head’s up” before you shop.

ACE PRODUCTS! MEGKEN SPEAKS!

Wed, 06/24/2009 - 4:49pm
  • Face

clear1I was so excited to try these ACE products, cool packaging and great looking designs.  Unfortunately that is the best thing about them.  The dual action tweezers have a little too much tension to be comfortable to use.  In the shooting hobby we talk about "trigger pull" and that is it the measurement of how many pounds of force it takes to squeeze off a shot. I have to say that the Ace tweezers just take too many pounds of force to be comfortable to use but they look good and feel good in the hand.  I think it is possible to get use to them if change your grip. If you are use to the girlie kind it is an adjustment. If you most your fingers closer to the ends it's more comfortable and the best thing is that they are large and hard to lose. Now for the safety scissors,  I have kinda a hairy face and the best way I found to get rid of nose hair and in my ear is when the barber in Amman Jordan burned it with a lighter, DON'T TRY THIS ON YOURSELF!!!.  This was done by a professional Arab with year of hair burning experience. However, these ACE scissors, I just didn't like them.  I like professional scissors to trim the inside of my nose or one of the electric trimmers. These felt light, lacked precision and a little awkward in my hand. Also because of the round tips I couldn't easily get to the hard places inside my nose I also have a beard and these scissors just don't CUT IT.

STYLEMAMA'S ELDEST STYLELADY ON HER REVIEW OF GLOP AND GLAM GLITTER GUM-MEDIUM HOLD!

Wed, 06/24/2009 - 2:04pm
  • Hump Day Hair

isi

Stylemama here!  Yesterday you met my youngest daughter Lizzy, and listened while she dished on the super chic and natural Glop & Glam tween hair care line.  G&G says it best, "The hair industry lacks a children's hair care line that truly takes into consideration the desires of both children and their parents."   Well not anymore, thank you G&G! Today we welcome Lizzy's older sister, Isabelle.  She's here to give us her thoughts on Glop and Glam's Glitter Gum Medium Hold Gel.  So, join us as we enter the mind of a soon to be fourth grader, as she uncovers another layer of G&G's wares.

My name is Isabelle and I am nine and a half years old. I do not have a nickname, but if I did it would be Is.   I had a really great time working on this review!

Here is what happened when I used the Glitter Gum.  First, I took a shower and washed my hair really, really good.  Then my mom put Glitter Gum all over my hair, including my bangs.  Next we blow dried and flat ironed my hair.  I LOVED the way it turned out!  It looked even better than when I go to the hair salon.  We took pictures so all of you could see.  I don't know if you can tell, but I have purple highlights in my hair.  My sister and I get colored highlights every summer as a special treat for working hard the whole school year and getting good grades.  Last year we had pink!

Just like the name (Glitter Gum) it STICKS.  Even after we blow dried my hair it held the same style.  Usually after my mom does my hair it doesn't hold the style without hairspray, but this time it did.  I don't really like hairspray.  I thought the Glitter Gum smelled like mint bubble gum but my sister said it reminded her of a strawberry Jolly Rancher.  It smells delicious! It made my mom's hands smell real sweet, I could smell them the whole time she was doing my hair.  Even though it has sparkles in the bottle they don't show up in your hair once it's all dry.  I thought you should know that so that you don't think that when you put this in your hair you will have a head full of sparkles.

I love all that girly stuff.  When I grow up I want to be a fashion designer.   My line of clothes will be made of recycled or energy efficient fabric.  I'm all about saving the planet.  This year in school, I wrote a book called The Easter Bunny And The Kapershkie and it got picked by Young Authors.  They published it and made it into a hard back book.  I dedicated my book to my Grandma Donna, it made her cry, she was so happy.  I really like writing, playing teacher, hair salon, swimming and playing outside.  Meg, I think it was really sweet of you to let me do this, I really appreciate it, it was really sweet of you.

EPIONE! SPF 30 FULL SPECTRUM SUN PROTECTION

Tue, 06/23/2009 - 8:12pm
  • Body Beautiful
  • Body

epione1

Hello! it’s Jeanasina here a.k.a. Sunhat Stella (summer time alias) your ace reporter on location in Minneapolis!  These days, especially during the summer months I completely make every attempt to keep the sun off of my face and body.  For YEARS I would spend every weekend and my two week vacations taking my lawn chair to the beach along with a good mystery and I’d sit my bikini covered buttocks down on my lawn chair which was always strategically placed IN the water, just on the edge of the lake. I always had the perfect people watching spot and would sit there for at least 8 hours a day!  I would bake in the sun until I was a beautifully glazed brown!  I am a good tanning candidate and it takes a lot for me to get a burn. What a gift huh?  My mom, in the early days of my life was a tanner too!  She had the darkest tan of anybody I ever met!  When she was around, she would put on some short terry cloth shorts and a matching terry cloth halter top (much like the look of the 1940's) and lay out in our front yard slathered in OLIVE OIL!  Truth – I kid you not!  It probably was the secret to her fabulous tan but man oh man, olive oil on baked-in-the-sun-skin is SO not a good smell! Gagging as I write this…Obviously I inherited the tanning gene.  A few years ago I finally realized that what I was doing to my skin was STUPID and dangerous.  I did use SOME sunscreen during these marathons at the beach and it usually was Coppertone #4 because I loved the smell and figured it did do a little something to protect me from the sun’s rays!  It was my token acknowledgment to sunburn prevention.  More times than not, after I had been in the water, I wouldn't reapply sunscreen unless I felt something was starting to blister! I was always able to acquire a very dark tan and because of this I pretty much worked my skin into a brown frenzy which in later years resulted in sun damage and age spots.  These gems are a daily reminder that I was SO STUPID to bake my body like I always did.  Let me say if I could have a ‘do over’ I’d SO have never ever spent all that time frying my poor skin!  Sunscreen really was about ‘amplifying’ the sun so you’d get even tanner rather than any real type of skin cancer prevention back then!  People actually put iodine in their baby oil or suntan lotion to make their skin appear even darker back in my youth!  Yes, even I tried the iodine thing at least once!  I remember going to the drugstores and smelling each lotion and sometimes THAT was my criteria for which suntan product I'd take to the beach - if it smelled yummy I'd buy it! What's wrong with this picture?

There is no magic cream I can put on my body that will overnight bring me back the lovely youthful porcelain skin I began with.  I have to deal with what I have now because I helped create it and those spots are all over my body except for my buttocks because THAT was the only part that was constantly covered!  Who hopes I am including a photo of my buttocks with this review?  Every time I see a young girl with unmarred lovely white skin I want to run up and tell her how fabulous her skin is and to never start tanning!  I try to put on sunscreen every time I go outdoors these days but it’s not second nature so I have to really think about slathering it on before I go out.  There are SO many brands out there to chose from.  Lucky for ME that Meg has sent me several lovely sun screen brands to test out!  Today I’m going to give a little shout out to Epione of Beverly Hills SPF 30 Full Spectrum Sun Protection!

The SPF 30 Epione sunscreen comes in a 2.0 oz tube (not very large so a person might use it up quite quickly, unfortunately).  It has a lovely creamy texture and it’s somewhat thick, so when you rub it in, you feel like you are truly getting some high quality product on your skin!  If you touch the area where you put the sunscreen about five minutes later, it’s still there!  You really feel like it’s making a protective barrier wherever you put it.  I filled my bathtub up and got in with the sunscreen on and my floaties and pretended I was playing at the beach for an extended period of time to test it out. (This could be true - you don't know...)  I noticed that the water kind of bounced off of my skin which, again, showed me that the product was undoubtedly providing an invisible barrier from unwanted sunbeams.  I also noticed that my skin feels incredibly soft wherever I put on the lotion and not tacky in any way.  I was hoping for a more tropical fragrance however. But the fragrance seems to leave the area within a short span of time so my thoughts are – what is the purpose of this product – TO KEEP BAD SUNRAYS OFF OF ME!  It’s not a perfume, so there you go.  The next time I can even bear to be outside in the sun – it’s 95 humid degrees here today (I'm melting) – I will be conducting an actual sun rainin’ down on me experiment to see if it truly blocks the sun and I’ll report back immediately with my results on that aspect!
