JONATHAN'S SILKY DIRT SHINE AND DEFENSE CREME! GREEN CHI TUESDAYS!

Mon, 09/29/2008 - 7:42pm
  • Green Chi Tuesdays
  • Hair

Sweetassgal here to bring you the best natural and organic products our Mother Earth has to offer us by the way of Green Chi Tuesdays!

Ahhh how times have changed! My beautiful (and so grown up daughter) had her Junior Year Homecoming dance this weekend. When I was growing up the Homecoming Dance consisted of kids in preppy shirts, jeans, and socked feet only so our school principal wouldn't have a cow about dancing on the basketball court. Homecoming Dance circa 2008 in suburban California....TOTALLY different story. It's all about formal dresses, corsages, dinners out and of course, the perfect updo!

Times being what they are we circumvented the stylist and did the 'do' at home. I'm not completely without talent in this arena so we popped in a chick flick, sat down with bobby pins and curling iron in hand and assessed the situation. My girl has incredibly gorgeous and thick hair but straight as a pin. This is the death of an updo as its so heavy it can fall out and so straight that curls don't hold long unless they're pinned and shellacked into place. Unfortunately today the situation was worsened by the fact that she had JUST washed her hair and we weren't privy to the 'second day dirty hair' that is best for formal do's. What to do...what to do?

Jonathan's Silky Dirt Shine and Define Creme with Essential Waters and 100% Vegan to the rescue! Just a TINY dab of this on your fingertips, run through your hair, and VOILA...you are second day dirty. This can be applied on wet hair for definition or to dry hair to tame frizzies, pump up the shine factor and help style too soft, just cleansed hair. I'm curly and frizzy...my girl is soft and straight. It works for both of us on different levels. A word to the wise however...a little goes a LONG way. If you over apply you will have greasy looking hair. I would not recommend this for people with very thin hair or for those with super oily hair. But I can recommend it for the curlies, wavies and straighties who need a little shine, definition and control!

'Perfect for dull or damaged hair, this grooming creme helps me create amazing supermodel shine plus sexy, natural hair definition. The best part is I can use it on damp hair for extra control or on dry hair for a smooth, lasting finish.' ~ Jonathan

I find this everywhere...Ulta, Sephora, online at just about every beauty website. You can buy a full size tube for $28 or half size for $16. It will last you forever...which is more than I can say about my daughters updo! Home by 11:30 and though she still looked FABULOUS in her red dress and perfectly coiffed hair...out came the pins and down came the hair. All good things must end!

Let's hear from those of you who've got a hair story or know about Jonathan's Silky Dirt...do you love it as much as I do??? GLAM ON megsmakeup gals!

CATCH ME ON TWITTER!

Mon, 09/29/2008 - 9:50am
  • Miscellaneous

Meg here, Karina is a very good friend to me. She's one of those people thats involved in a million different groups and clubs and knows everyone. She insisted I enter the world of Twitter

I'm still trying to figure it all out, here's the best way I can describe it. It's like an instant im/conversation between a bunch of people instead of just one. There is a way to send it to just one person though. It's a quick way to get a message out to someone. e.g. "Just bought Lip Venom at Sephora!" That type of thing.

So, I'm going to give it a shot. My handle is @megsmakeup so if you're already on Twitter you can find me. If you're not on Twitter you should check it out. We can figure it out together!

Any other Twitter members out there that have any advice for a newbie?

HUSH, HUSH, KEEP IT DOWN NOW~VOICES CARRY! MONDAYS WITH MEG!

  • Mondays With Meg
  • Miscellaneous

Meg here, I hope you all had a nice weekend. I am using this weekend as a family detox. I spent 11 days with family and it was very nice seeing my sister and family and my Grandmother. Well, very nice to see my Gram but even dinner with her, my bff, was weird when all those old-school taboos played in.

My grandfather died like a decade ago. My mother was trying to figure the profit of selling his house and said "Well, it has to be split between the 6 kids." My sister piped up that since one had died there were 5 kids. My mother said "Don't forget Uncle XYZ.." My sister said "Who the hell is Uncle XYZ?" My mother just responded it was our Grandfather's secret son, our secret uncle and to just do the house math. I am 32 years old, I just found out about my Uncle XYZ, like 8 days ago.

That's the way it is. It is so disturbing to me. So many weird family secrets come out all the time. It's not just me, everytime my bestfriend's Gram gets tanked at Thanksgiving she lets one out of the bag.."We're Jewish!..."Your Grandfather was 100% Native American!"..."Grampy was married before!"

When I said to my mother that I thought it a bit unnerving to just find out about Secret Uncle she said to me "That's nothing. My grandfather had two families."

When I would read in novels the star character got secretly knocked up and "sent away to stay with a cousin" I shouldn't have laughed at how dumb that was. It's 2008, I went with my awesome Gram and my Dad to dinner. A friend of my Gram's asked how I was. I said I was getting divorced but all is good. My Gram and Father actually said, in front of me "HAHAHA, she's kidding they're not getting divorced." What? I'm getting divorced. "HAAHA, they're working it out. She's just joking, haha".

I actually had to try to convince my grandmother's friend that while wacky, not insane. Yes, I am getting divorced.

I'm from Boston, that's supposed to be progressive. We're not the Kennedy's, we're not running for anything. Who the Hell cares?

I'm all for keeping up with the Jones's, however, you know the Jones's have an insane relative locked in their attic.

I'm just over it. Yes, I smoke ciggs. Yes, I enjoy my cocktails. Yes, I'm getting divorced.

I think Marilyn Monroe said it best ..“I fear being like everyone I hate, I fear failure, I fear losing control. I love balancing between chaos and control with everything I do. I always have a fear of going one way or another, getting lost in something, or losing everything to get lost in. And I fear being a completely acceptable sheep in society.”

This black sheep has finally become OK with the label, it's OK for me to not follow the herd.

I can't be the only one that feels like this! Chime in black sheep! have you any wool?

YSL GLOSS PUR BLACK! XSTATIC XPLORES THE XOTIC!

Sun, 09/28/2008 - 12:19pm
  • Xotic Items
  • Lips

Xstatic817 here, and I’m afraid this review will have to be my swan song - at least for the time being. Sadly, I’ve been overcome with work pressures, school pressures, home-buying pressures, crappy-economy pressures, and, well, I think you get the drift. I’ll try to check in every now and again when I unearth a new treasured find. I hope to be back in the spring with my masters degree, a house, and considerably more free time.

But on to the makeup!

So I have been dying for a black gloss every since I realized that this would be fall’s next-big-thing. Maybe its my obsession with Halloween (I’m going as Alice this year, of Wonderland descent), or perhaps some deep-seated regret for never going all-out with the goth look when I had the chance. In any case, I needed me some black gloss.

I missed out on this gloss when it was first offered as a limited edition at the end of August, but lo and behold, it made a second appearance on YSL’s website a few weeks back and as far as I can tell, its still in stock, still limited edition. It’s the first release of a new gloss formulation for Yves Saint Laurent that will launch in Spring 2009 and promise to be “full of pure color and high shine.”

But what does one do with black lip gloss?

Well, when worn alone, it definitely has a high-fashion, NSFW-or-really-anywhere vibe to it. And yet its awesome. There’s something about wearing black gloss that makes you feel instantly cooler, hipper even if your husband requests you remove it “this instant” the same way your mother did when your 12-year-old self pranced downstairs with lipstick on for the first day of 6th grade. Ok, so it can’t really be worn alone unless you’ve got major cajones.

So today I took the advice of makeup artists everywhere and decided to blend, blend, BLEND. I first applied a very light coat to my bottom lip and then put Bobbi Brown’s Black Mauve lip gloss on my top lip and smushed around. Alone, black mauve has its own quietly goth thing going on - a little bit purple, a little bit gray and disturbingly pretty on. The YSL gloss added more depth - obviously - and added more of a brown tone. I definitely think this would make a nice winter lip color. Then I tried another thin coat atop MAC Desire lipstick, which is a dark plum to begin with. This made a divine berry-eggplant color that I think fits perfectly with the dark fall lip trend we’re seeing. I even wore this out to the grocery store. I’m sure there are numerous color combinations out there and if you’re adventurous and like to experiment, you’ll have a lot of fun with this lip gloss.

The gloss itself has good lasting power, is not overly sticky, and has that tropical fruit smell of all YSL lip products. On the lips, it felt very much like YSL’s Golden Gloss - minus the bit of grit.

Here are the gory details from the YSL website: “A cosmetic jewel that turns lips into a spectacular fashion statement. Mysterious, sensual, luminous... For fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, black is THE color. And as a make-up artist, lips are THE focus. YSL GLOSS PUR Black unites these two facets of his art in a superb Limited Edition. From plum to ebony, it dresses lips in an infinite range of shades, depending on how it is applied - feather light or rich and bold. Transparent yet intense, it plays on the depths of black and the pure shine of a sparkle-free formula.”

Has anyone else tried this product? Or maybe you too have bought an outrageous, completely frivolous beauty item that you knew you’d hardly use ?

FRESH FIREBIRD MASCARA! SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA

Sat, 09/27/2008 - 2:06pm
  • Saturday At Sephora
  • Miscellaneous

Katie here and for the record, I am with all you ladies who responded to Meg's post about Cindy McCain. If you've got it flaunt it. And she is a little bit older. She looks much less ridiculous in pearls and Chanel, and Oscar than some 22 year old wannabe ever will. Less is not more. More is Fabulous.

Speaking of gluttony, I have like 10 different mascaras and I never have any problem accepting/buying/trying more. I have my night-time going out mascaras...my tinted moisturizer and hat on my head mascaras, and my everyday daytime mascara.

This last category recently evolved a new front runner. Enter: Fresh Firebird Mascara ($26). It comes in a pretty peacock green and gold tube. The brush is also rather unique. The wife of the Fresh founding couple took her old Supernova mascara wand and attacked it with tweezers. The more sparsely haired Firebird brush truly gives you feathery, soft, and LONG lashes. And I do mean soft, long, and SEPARATED. No combing required. It's a must-have.

Oh, and P.S. I just noticed the new interactive feedback/review features on Sephora.com and it's addictive!

Any other fans of Fresh?

M LAB! FABULOUS FRIDAYS!

Fri, 09/26/2008 - 11:36am
  • Fragrant Fridays
  • Face

Caroline here! Bonjour - Finally Friday ... it's been a long week for me - boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, new apartment and a new job! This week, I have a special product from Milbar Laboratories, a lab that makes medical skin care products for Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons.

M Lab has a full product line, including a travel kit, but their signature product is the anti-aging skin treatment; a 2.4 fl oz sells for $260. The butterscotch colored rich cream comes straight from the Milbar Laboratories in Brussels where their "scientists create without limitation, the most efficacious and luxurious anti-aging formulations in the world".

I had my mother test the product for a month as well. She, who is a La Prairie Nazi, was smitten as a kitten with the this product's texture and ingredients - even now she is calling to remind me to mention the leading ingredients are sunflower seed oil and the parkii butter. She also wants me to tell you that every time I use product, my face has an "instant color and glow, evened my skin out, filled in fine lines, gave me a more youthful look and a rose colored palate that lasted through out the evening, without make-up". Wow, Mom! Thanks! Although I guess the compliment is actually for the skin cream ...

Coming from someone who has constant allergies and irritations - I was very happy to find a cream that does not hurt my eyes and make my skin itch. Funny enough, this morning, I noticed it actually says "allergy-free and irritation-free" on the website. I never really believe those words but this time, it's for real. And that makes me feel better about everything else they say.

Any other sensitive skin ladies that love M lab?

MAYBELLINE'S COLOSSAL VOLUM' EXPRESS MASCARA! DRUGSTORE DEAL

Thu, 09/25/2008 - 11:59am
  • Drugstore Deals
  • Eyes

Meg here, I'm back! There is really no place like home. So pleased to be back in my bubble! LaLa Land I love you! It took me 11 hours to get back yesterday so I'm sorry this is up a little late! Here's Gigi's first ever Drugstore Don't!

Gigi's back with a DD Don't! Scarlett O’Hara was famous for two beauty “tricks:” Literally pinching her cheeks to bring a rush of color to her fair Southern Belle complexion and taking the ultimate advantage of her long, full eyelashes to garner power over men. With a bat of her eyes, men fell over themselves to serve her at a barbeque and easily succumbed to her other charms.

Unfortunately, luxurious, lengthy lashes are not one of my charms. I do have a scant amount, but they are auburn, easily overpowered by eyeshadow and liner. In junior high school, I learned the power of mascara to transform me from “cute” to “striking” if used correctly. For me, mascara is a beauty must-have for women unless you are unusually blessed with naturally lush, gorgeous lashes—it adds definition, enhances eye color, and makes the whites of your eyes more vivid. I do not “pump” the tube for color, as air can dry out the formula and render it hard to apply; simply twirl the wand in the tube for more color (free tip!). I followed professional suggestions to add bulk to mine: Between coats of color, I would dust them with face powder. Finally, cosmetic companies began to offer base coats to plump lashes before mascara. But we’re all busy—I often don’t have time to work with dual products. Perhaps I’m an idealist, but I’m continually on a quest for super-quick “miracle” products.

Maybelline’s “The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara” is displayed on drugstore shelves everywhere (around $8.00). Maybelline, as you are well aware, has given us “Great Lash” (a staple for thousands of women). I especially like their “Full and Soft” mascara, as lashes are thickened and remain naturally supple. Colossal Volum’ promises that the patented MegaBrush and collagen will add nine times more volume to your lashes (sorry, but I’ve never understood how they derive such statistics—is there such a thing as an “eyelash-measuring tool?”). Something troubled me immediately--this product is available in “Classic Back” or “Glam Black.” What’s the difference? Black can be overwhelming for many.

My hand is steady, as I paint for a hobby with fine brushes. While applying, something smelled foul. I looked around me—was there a spoiled piece of fruit nearby or had our dog had an accident? No—it emanated from the mascara. I’ve never paid much attention to a mascara’s scent, but this can be politely described as “Ugh.” The Drugstore Deal reviewer bought another one just to make sure she was using a fresh product, but the gag response recurred.

Maybelline advises that you brush from root to tip without allowing one coat to dry before adding others. I struggled with the first coat! The MegaBrush is too large and unwieldy. No matter how much time I spent, it was difficult to capture all lashes and I wound up with the color far from my eyes. This “no-clumping” formula does—in a major way. I went to my sister’s home and my family asked why I was wearing “spiders.” Point taken. When dry, lashes are elongated and have bulk, but in a bizarre, stilted rather than flattering way. Packaging states that it can be taken off with eye makeup remover. Save yourself some cash—don’t buy it at all.

I hate to diss the company that has brought us “fine makeup, sensibly priced” (their old slogan), but I speak the truth. To paraphrase Rhett Butler, “Frankly, Maybelline, “I don’t give a darn . . .”

Am I missing something with “The Colossal Volum’ Express Mascara”?

AHAVA NATURAL LIGHTENING HAND CREME! GREEN CHI TUESDAYS!

Tue, 09/23/2008 - 8:22am
  • Green Chi Tuesdays
  • Body

Sweetassgal here to bring you the best natural and organic products our Mother Earth has to offer us by the way of Green Chi Tuesdays!

Here's one of my shamefully insane beauty fixations. That odd ritual or habit you developed out of a fear instilled in you by a threatening beauty article, or like me...by witnessing the results of ignoring the advice first hand. Note I mentioned HAND. Yes...that is where my strange fixation lies...in the health and beauty of my hands. Many of us in my age range and younger take the flawlessness of our hands for granted. I have been one such person and found my first beginning of an age spot earlier this year! I tried to laugh it off as a developing freckle but deep down knew the truth and immediately began to worry about the protection of my mitts. Here's the embarrassing part...I became SO aware of it that I've actually begun driving with my hands curled UNDER the steering wheel at 8:00 and 4:00 so that the backs of my hands are turned down and out of the sun and only the palms of my hands are turned up towards the light. Someone commit me to the beauty looney bin NOW...I'm certifiable!

Our hands are constantly exposed to light so I decided to search out a product that would combine the moisturizing effects of hand cream, SPF of sunscreen, and lightening products to reverse any damage done by my years of neglect. To the internet I went and soon found that I may be the ONLY person alive who wants a 3-in-1 product to cure all. I was getting down right discouraged. I found hand creams promising youthfulness through moisturizing but little to no sun protection. Or there were lightening serums and such but they didn't protect against future damage. Was this a ploy to get me to buy 3 separate products? Just before I almost gave up, popped lithium and started wearing tissue boxes on my feet I found Ahava Lightening Hand Cream SPF 12 especially enriched with Mineral Skin Osmoter™ - AHAVA Natural Dead Sea Complex.

This is not an organic or all-natural product but it does utilize the ancient and world known curing properties of Dead Sea minerals so I'm taking the stretch and reviewing it anyway. I've been using this lotion for over three months now and my little spot is nary a blip on the canvas of my skin. I couldn't be happier about it. This also is a wonderful hand lotion on its own. It absorbs quickly, isn't greasy, and instantly gives my hands a little 'plumping' lift. I have just two complaints...#1 why SPF 12? Why not 15...25...35? I'll take the 12 for now because its the best I could find but in the future...ahem folks at Ahava...PUMP UP THE SPF! #2...I hate the screw top cap. I prefer pumps or flip tops as its just simpler application.

Well my gorgeous gals...please don't leave me hangin' thinking I'm the ONLY one with insane beauty tendencies. Leave a comment to the review to share your experience (even if it isn't about Ahava...even better if it is) and some of your cuckoo beauty habits too. This site isn't only about make up, its about sharing stories and feeling the love and support of our fellow whack-o beauty devotees!

I'd love to hear from you and remember to GLAM ON megsmakeup gals!!

MAYBELLINE DREAM MOUSSE BLUSH! MONDAYS WITH MEG & A DD!

Mon, 09/22/2008 - 8:25am
  • Drugstore Deals
  • Face

Meg here! Happy Monday! I know, I was just trying to be upbeat. When girlfriends come to visit me at my house they don't even bring a makeup bag. Usually they walk into my bathroom and scream out "OMG, it's like a flipping Sephora in here!" Why bring anything when you can try the latest and greatest at my house and usually leave with a few partying gifts?

Realizing that this is a rare happenstance, I pack my cosmetics case to the brim when travelling. I have every potion, every creme, every...Wait. No, I know I put it in here. Maybe it's under this brush..No, wait my purse? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! I forgot blush! What kind of makeup maven forgets her blush? Since, we had a few Drugstore Deal issues on Thursday, I'll be bringing you my DD on Monday.

I am a firm believer in cream blush, it just makes a nice "glow" like when you were little and running around outside. It blends and you can get very spot specific. I also use bronzer all over my face. I disregard the rules for that one. I take a big, fat brush and do a quick sweep for an all over golden hue. Then I grab my trusty creme blush to blend on the apples of my cheeks and voila! I look among the living!

I was at my sister's house. She is far from a sephora and department store! Off to trusty Walgreens for my new blush.

I settled (for $5.99) on Maybelline'sDream Mousse Blush shade #25 ROSE PETAL. It's $5.99 so I figured, eh, we'll see. I am so happy I forgot my other, much pricier creme blush at home. Here's the skivvy, it is whipped like mousse, you need a foundation brush to apply this or else it's going to get all under your nails and make a mess. It blends very well, it luminous and slighty sheer with pink undertones but with enough color to look spry!

So don't cry for me Argentina! Left the pricey stuff at home and let's all believe in a higher power (I'm sure he has nothing else to do but worry about my blush issues) and say it all happened as part of the greater, frugal plan!

ON SALE HERE!

SKYN ARTIC BRIGHTENING SERUM! GODDESS GRANNY!

Sun, 09/21/2008 - 10:25am
  • Goddess Granny
  • Miscellaneous

Hello out there! Goddess Granny here high and dry in South Texas but I'm sending out hugs and good thoughts to those affected by Ike and all the craziness he caused.
What a YEAR this has been so far? A girl has got to really focus on keeping mind/body/soul in good working order these days! Between the weather and the stock market,I think we've all had our share of "outside stress" this year! I for one am looking forward to using this time to re-evaluate and purge, both my product-stock and the toxic crap in my life!

Speaking of stress,I am seeing a HUGE array of "anti-stress" beauty products on the shelves currently: we all know that stress can mess you up in more ways than Tina Fey can make us laugh but I"m wondering if this is based on the effectiveness of the products themselves to wave that magic wand we all hope for and fix what ails us or if it's simply a word that triggers SUCH a response from us that we need to buy it hopefully,to insure that bottle or jar will grant us a moment's peace,LOL!

Enter the "Skyn Iceland" line of products which says it is the "only skincare line specifically formulated to counteract the detrimental effects of chronic stress on skin..." They go on in their info to let us know that stress can profoundly affect our hormone and chemical levels and therefore cause the skin to become "starved" an in need of some good stuff applied to it in order to regain it's health!Their products are a "soothing" experience and supposedly, even the "shape of the packaging in your hand is relaxing..."

I think I need every single product they make RIGHT NOW,how about you?

Lots of reading on their site and I do think that many of the ingredients and products sound very lovely.I calmed down just reading through it all!

The sample I received to try is their "Skyn Artic Brightening Serum" and it's very generous, probably enough for a week's worth of testing.Lovely "cooling sensation" as it's applied with a slight cirtus-scent.Very clean and nice to apply...figured I'd leave it on overnight and awake to a complexion that was as glowing and pink as a walk in an Icelandic meadow but alas...it was not meant to be.

Within 5 minutes,my skin was burning terribly and little red bumps were forming at the corners of my mouth...great...even the ultimate "anti-stress" product was going to mess with me this month! I did read the ingredients on the site, which include some very impressive actives and some rares as well but Holy Cow,I had to go and wash my face asap and it still continued to feel as though I was too close to the fire for about an hour after I removed as much of the product as possible...I felt guilty as I knew I'd want to "review it" here which also stressed me out.

Was it the artic root? The Siberian ginseng? The maral root? What was the offender??? I am seriously thinking that the "kombucha" which "goes to work to brighten skin and bring back the glow you left behind..." aka known as the "miracle mushroom" may have been the culprit in terms of my allergic reaction to the product.Tried the "tea" years ago when it was all the beauty rage and also got sick from it.

I ended up sad as I so wanted to "like" this product: the site is cool and informative and they have won numerous awards and many magazines have given the products a thumbs up. I think they are a bit pricey but again, you're paying for the active ingredients that really do make that difference in a product as opposed to base and fillers.I think I shall order their "Detox kit" for stressed skin and give a few of the other fine products they create a whirl...thinking this was a one product/time only event and I am willing to see what else they market that does work for me!

Sooooo....feeling guilty that this isn't my most positive review to date BUT I would add that I think it's a good lesson: some of the more esoteric ingredients, when applied topically, can result in less than stellar results and it's probably a good reminder to this old dog to do a "test patch" when trying a product so full of goodesss, unusual ingredients, and actives!

I give the company a thumbs up for their marketing and innovative products and myself a negative for smearing something on when it's pretty much clinical in ingredients.Spend a bit of time on the site,it's truly sort of refreshing and calming.

Exclusive to Sephora, you can buy it here: SKYN ICELAND

After my admission of guilt, does anyone else share the gift of over jealous application of products? Are you pro-active in your ingredient inspection or do you smear on and then go into shock?

Do you believe that any product has the ability to reduce the effects of stress? I'm gonna' stick to yoga/wine for now,LOL!
