TOOLS OF THE TRADE! SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA!

Sat, 05/31/2008 - 1:52pm
  • Miscellaneous

Tools of the Trade - Brushes Every Woman should have in her Arsenal! Every Saturday Kate brings you the best of Sephora as only an insider can!

BFOK (Boyfriend of Kate) has a son who just turned three a couple weeks ago. So, I don't really know anyone with tiny kids anymore so clearly I jumped at the chance for fun to buy him a little birthday present. And give it to him early just so it was his favorite toy for a couple of weeks! His dad always works with tools. His grandfather who he adores does wood-working as a hobby so he has tools too. But Tyler needed some tools! So I got him this set that had a little tool box with a hammer and screwdrivers (Phillips AND Flathead!) And a a wrench and a saw (that makes noise!) and nails and nuts and bolts. Oh, and he LOVED it! I was told that he even slept with his tools laid on the bed next to him for a couple of nights. Score!!!! Every man, little or big, needs his tools...even if he's a total klutz...you still need a screwdriver and stuff...assembling ikea furniture. Changing batteries in garage door openers. Well, so does every girl! I've assembled this little list of some must-have "tools" for us girls in the beauty department store!

#1 The softest fluffiest powder brush you can find. I haven't found a single one that beats my Stila #8 Powder brush. It's soft silky hairs are perfection. Stila makes a mean brush, by the way. Tarte doesn't make their powder brush anymore. So I will have to treasure my vintage one and not actually recommend it to you ;).

#2 A good sharpener. You're sure to wiggle your almost-perfect eyeliner line if you haven't sharpened your pencil in a month. There are some A, B, and D list sharpeners and not much in between. You're best bet is the Anastasia sharepner with its double openings for fat and skinny pencils. The Duwop Beauty Blade is a B-lister. A tip though, sharpeners dull after about a year and it's worth your money in Urband Decay 24/7 pencils to just replace them at least once per year, if not twice. Another tip, if you ever buy the Eyeliner pencils from E.L.F. cosmetics--the sharpeners that come with are amazing (even though they're only skinny)! And you only spent $1!

#3 The Sephora Brand Platinum Blush Brush #49. This is an angled blush brush with super soft taklon fibers. It applies powder blushes and highlighters beautifully. It also works great on creams - especially Tarte cheekstains! "The angled bristles fit perfectly over the cheekbone, which makes pronouncing your cheeks especially easy. The anti-bacterial bristles are made of nylon and resist residue so you don't have to clean the brush as often as you would with natural fibers." You can get the fibers their original ivory-white again with the Sephora (or any) brush shampoo.

#4 The Tarte Smudger Eyeshadow Brush. Firstly, its an easy $15. Secondly, its genius. It's very small and the hairs are very short. Perfect for getting the smoky look of shadow liners without accidentally smearing it all over your eyelid. Its also amazing for getting underneath the bottom lashes. This version has very soft squirrel hairs. It also comes in a taklon version (for liquid and creams) on one end of the Double Duty Eyelining Brush (also by Tarte) for $23. While the other end is home to the traditional flat eyeliner brush (which I love for a sleek, slim line). And, never one for economy, I own both of these brushes. I use the natural squirrel hair brush at least 5 of 7 days during the week.

#5 Smashbox Blending Brush #03. This is a wide, fluffy brush. It's great for a slight even distribution of color all over the lid. I also like to use it as an under-eye powder brush to sweep on eye brightening powder, buff out concealer, or to sweep away "shadow fallout." $32 is a little bit more of an investment but Smashbox brushes are nearly unparalleled in quality. Any of their eye brushes are fantastic.

Last but not least, some makeup brush care need-to-knows!

All synthetic fiber brushes (concealer, foundation, cream shadow, etc) can be sanitized with alcohol and cleaned with any mild soap.
Natural hair brushes need a little bit more TLC. NEVER use alcohol on them...it breaks down the hairs. You wouldn't put it on your own head! Neither would the squirrel or sable who grew them for your own beauty! All you need is a little squirt of your own hair shampoo. Gently massage a tiny amount into the hairs as you run it under the faucet (on low). Keep rinsing until the water runs clean. Gently squeeze the excess water out and lay brushes flat to dry on a paper towel.

Do this and your brushes will be happy and work for you for a long time!

What brushes are in your arsenal?

KINARA RED CARPET FACIAL KIT! FAB FRIDAYS!

Fri, 05/30/2008 - 10:20am
  • Face

Hey Camper's, CRoman here,
T-G-I-FABULOUS-F! This week, Olga Lorencin-Northrup, owner of Kinara Spa on Robertson Blvd, sent over her 'Kinara Red Carpet Facial Kit'. This three piece sett with mixing bowl and brush comes with instructions for three fun steps to get red-carpet ready!

1. Admitted we were powerless over fine lines and and that our pores had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe hydrating and exfoliating could restore it to vanity.
3. Made adecision to improve texture and reduce pore size while controlling breakouts and acne from now on!

After using the 3-Step Peel (1) Neutralizer (2) and Mask (3), my skin was visibly smoother, pores were smaller and it looked polished, radiant and blemishes were surprisingly less noticeable. More importantly it was ready for make-up. A smooth base makes foundation go on easier and looks smooth and natural. Anyone who winds up looking older with foundation and make-up should consider rough dry skin could be half their problem. I also think I looked really glamorous with the mask on.

My skin was clearly tighter and less porous after the three step mask - plus it was fun to use and I had time to call up my plus-one and practice my step-and-repeat in the mirror! How convenient!

Kinara's peel is not harsh, and the mask smelled and felt fresh and pure. I am very big on ingredients ladies - I always check them and you should too. Those crazy names - goodand bad - become familiar and as food or anything else goes, you must be aware as a consumer of what you are putting in to your body. I commend Olga for her attention to detail andrespect for the health and intelligence of her customers. Click here for a list of ingredients Kinara posts online for their Red Carpet Facial Kit.

Another thing you will get to know about me is that I like to find out about the brand itself. In this case, the brand Kinara is synonymous with the owner Olga Lorencin-Northrup. She is coming up on the old guard of estitians like Aida Thibiant and EsteeLauder our mothers use to trust. Olga, like each of them in the past, treats each client like a celebrity, is always at the spa, does treatments herself, takes phone calls and answers emails. I noticed a great piece on Olga in Rose Apodaca's new blog here I would love to share. Rose, a major contributor and influencer of fashion as we know it, is best known as the former West Coast bureau chief at WWD and for her book with Rachel Zoe,Style A to Zoe. Please read her truly insightful profile of Olga: My Pick of the New Gaurde of Skin Diezensin Los Angeles.

BOSCIA WILLOW BARK SPOT TREATMENT

Thu, 05/29/2008 - 9:28am
  • Face

Meg here to talk about zits "Fantastic! you're thinking! How does megsmakeup.com always know how to be so chic!

Zits are a part of life. They're like death and taxes. Everybody gets them. What are they?

For reasons no one completely understands, follicles, often called pores, sometimes get blocked. Sebum (oil) which normally drains to the surface gets blocked and bacteria begins to grow. Both whiteheads and blackheads start out as a microcomedone. The picture is a microcomedone.

What's the diff between a "blackhead" and a "whitehead"?

Blackheads, yuck, OK here's your science lesson of the day..A blackhead occurs when the pore opens to the surface, and the sebum, which contains the skin pigment melanin, oxidizes and turns a brown/black color. It is not dirt and can not be washed away. Blackheads can last for a long time because the contents very slowly drain to the surface.

Whiteheads, even worse then the blackhead. Well, I guess it depends how visible but here's their deal..
When the trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface, a whitehead is formed. Whiteheads may show up as tiny white spots, or they may be so small that they are invisible to the naked eye. If they were invisible to the naked eye then I'd have no problem. Unfortunately, my whiteheads didn't get that memo.

Lucky for all of us with skin, Boscia has come out with their own Willow Bark Spot Treatment. Unlike a goopy, slimey gel this is a neat, easy to apply pen applicator. Here's what Boscia says "A convenient click pen for on-the-go spot treatment.Boscia Willow Bark Breakout Treatment To-Go pen contains a gel which helps provide relief from breakouts effectively and safely, even for sensitive skin. This preservative-free, botanically-rich proprietary formula offers a gentle and effective means to ensure your skin stays clear and healthy-looking."

please post if your Boscia Willow Bark Spot Treatment to go worked even if you got a D (um..me) in science!

NEUTROGENA COLOR BOOSTING SUNBLOCK 30! DRUGSTORE DEAL THURSDAYS (IT'S BEEN A TOUGH WEEK OK!)

Wed, 05/28/2008 - 10:14am
  • Body

Meg here to apologize for the crazy megsmakeup week. I kicked off my party week Friday night with
OMFGem at Christian Audigier's birthday party. I danced behind Michael Jackson, Miss Gem and I had had Hennessy with Snoop Dog (did you know you don't mix that? You just add ice cubes). Anyhow it was a holiday weekend for the books but now I promise to get things back on track!

Here is Rachael Robbins filling in for me with her DD's!

If you live in the NY/NJ area every holiday weekend, there is inevitably an invite to either the Hamptons or the Jersey Shore. Sounds delightful right? Well, it’s not so flipping delightful if you happen to be skin cancer girl (that would be me). If you’ve read my past post you know that I am at high risk for the pesky little rogue freckles that can turn evil at the first exposure to those yummy sun rays. Bi yearly trips to the dermatologist, and multiple biopsies is enough to keep me out of the sun. The bi product of this affliction is that I have become and absolute expert on self tanning products. More on that later.

So anyway, my horrors about being invited to the beach (which I love, sadly enough) is that I am THAT girl lugging an umbrella and a duffle size bag of sunblock. As I sit under my umbrella feeling like the boy in the bubble, I enviously watch all my freckle-less friends get all tan and toasty while I notice the few streaks in my self tanner and rotate my umbrella like a sun dial.

But there are those moments between the dangerous hours of 11am and 4pm where I like to leave my shaded prison and paddle my toes in the water. And for those occasions there are a number of 30+ sunblocks that keep me from bursting into flames. And for them, I am thankful.

But this year I have discovered something else to keep my dread of holiday weekends at a bare minimum! Neutrogena Color Boosting Sunblock in 30! This is a sunblock WITH a moisturizer in it, so you don’t feel like you’re wearing a sticky coat of sun deflecting armor. BUT WAIT!!!! It also has a gradual self tanner in it!!!! So at the end of the day, even though I’ve been under wraps for the most part, I end up looking like I was able to work on my tan! There motto might be my next tattoo “Sun-kissed color from your protection. Sunshine not required” KIDDING.

Anyway, this product comes in fair and medium skin tones and is non-comedogenic, so it wont clog your pores. Brilliant!

Anyone else LOVE this!?

SUPERB SKIN! SATURDAYS AT SEPHORA!

Sat, 05/24/2008 - 1:59pm
  • Face

Every Saturday Kate brings you the best of Sephora as only an insider can!

wonder if there is a technical term for the strange hormonal changes we women go through in your twenties. Not puberty, for me that was around age 13 or so. It's not menopause because I'm not quite old enough for that yet. But I know my metabolism has been hard to keep with. I've gained weight, but only gone up one dress size. And my skin! I used to be glowing and normal-combination. And I suppose I would still be considered combination because I'm not super oily. But I have become acneic. And its really frustrating. Especially at a time in my life where I'm constantly in pictures (wedding parties, mostly). And I am so self conscious. And it was hard to understand because I use great products so it wasn't like I was not taking care of my skin. What was/is the problem?

So I always knew that salicylic acid is anti-bacterial and anti-acne. I've heard it in countless Sephora training. Even so, salicylic acid is my new friend. In just a week using some Skin Effects products (soon up for review) as well as the Clinique Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion (Clinique's fancy word for TONER), my skin is looking so much better! And no further breakouts! (When I say breakouts - I mean 10 active blemishes at one time!) This "clarifying lotion" [TONER] is a "gentle, medicated formula exfoliates skin, and unclogs pores. Helps to reduce excess oil that can lead to breakouts." Use a cotton pad or two dampened with this magic potion all over your face after cleansing. You will be surprise (and a little grossed out) at all the makeup that your cleanser does not take off! But be comforted by the fact that it is now on your cotton pad and not your face!

Another great salicylic super hero is Dr. Brandt's Pore Effect. It's a night time moisturizer (or daytime if you're EXTREMELY oily). It is absolutely packed with powerful ingredients to fix up your pizza-face! Things like:

-Tea Tree: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, clarifying ingredient which is exceptional for treating acne prone skin.
-Lavender: Soothes and calms the skin, evens out redness and discoloration in the skin.
-Willow Bark Extract (Salix Alba): Calming and cooling agent. Also is antibacterial.
-Hyaluronic Acid: Plumps up the skin by holding water up to 1000 times it's weight in natural moisture.
-Salicylic Acid (Beta Hydroxy): Anti-inflammatory, controls excess oil, tightens pores, and treats acne while calming skin down.

I also can never say enough good things about the Boscia Clarifying Detox Mask. "This deep-cleansing clay mask contains pure botanicals, herbs, and select ingredients like kaolin clay and phellodendron bark to absorb impurities, control excess oil, detoxify, and renew your skin from deep within. A unique combination of anti-irritants and purifying agents soothe and refine the appearance of pores as powerful antioxidants along with other therapeutic elements revitalize skin and help protect against the appearance of aging. " You can not even imagine how amazing your sking looks after you use this mask! Next time you have $20 in your wallet just head to Sephora and pick it up. Its great for all skin types and you'll feel like you have baby skin!

  • Face

Salut ladies! Tu as bon goût!! Meg's Make-up is cozy and reliable and I love it too! From now, I will be reviewing the FABULOUS for Fabulous Fridays! As a third generation Angeleno with a quadra-coastal upbringing (Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York and Nice), I've seen it all ... From French hydrating guns at La Prairie to German hydrating bathes at Baden-Baden, I promise to bring you only the best - and put the best to the test!! As your new product advocate and critic, I am available to you at all times for your beauty quandaries. Please say hello at CRoman!

What has my face all aglow? New Cle de Peau Fluid Foundation. Goes on smooth and creamy and dissolves into your skin... Minimizing pores and smoothing out discoloration. So what's so different about this foundation? It leaves a pearly dewy finish all over that's a great start to this spring's bronze trends and silvers, golds and bright shades of pink and orange for lips and lids.

Don't be afraid to invest in a stong foundation! Two pumps goes on with your fingertips and lasts all day with no problems transitioning into night. If you're going to spend money don't you think its best spent on your face? I mean shoes are up there but the first thing people see is your face. I love love Cleau de Peau's fluid foundation and it definitely makes me feel like a million dollars!
Here's what they say " A liquid treatment foundation that provides a flawless, radiant finish as if the quality of the skin has improved. Provides dewy moisture and a feeling of resiliance!"
I am so impressed with this and definitely recommend! Nice to meet all of you!

CARMINDY FOR SALLY HANSEN EXTRAVAGANZA! DRUGSTORE DEAL THURSDAYS!

Wed, 05/21/2008 - 9:57pm
  • Face
  • Lips

Hello DD devotees! Rachael Robbins here I'm writing to you from my Iphone, as I wait for my general contractor to get to my house and tell me why my newly carpeted basement, where my computer as well as all my shoes are, is slowly filling up with water. Yeah, major bummer. Not enough of a bummer to stop me from bring you the best of my DD's!

But thank goodness there are new and wonderful DD's to keep my spirits high!!

Ok, so in my last mailing from Meg I got a few things from Sally Hansen (Meg is always hooking me up with potential DD goodies!). At close inspection I noticed that these particular Sally products were inspired by the beloved Carmindy from the hit show "What Not To Wear". Now I know my next statement might insight another online lynching of yours truly, but.......I HATE THAT SHOW!!! My hatred is compounded by the fact that my mother is constantly quoting the show to me. No, I mean it, CONSTANTLY! To the point where she now calls it "that show you don't like me to talk about". But she still talks about it! I figured that I would quickly check out the products and then quickly pass them onto her.

That's not what happened.

What did happen when I tried the Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Your Skin Foundation in "True Beige"? I returned my newly purchased Armani Foundation right back to the Sak's 5th Ave from where it came! This foundation is amazing! It has the perfect, most natural coverage. There is nothing cheap about the quality of this foundation. But here's the best part: you do not need any powder to set it. It kind of sets itself without looking greasy or settling into fine lines. Its a well known fact that powder actually ages the look of your skin so if there is a product that can let me skip that step, I'm a believer! Also, often times applying blush or bronzer directly over foundation causes a blotchy effect. But not with this foundation! This stuff made my skin look flawlessly and naturally perfect! I felt like it took 5 years off my age.

I really can't rave enough about Carmindy's Sally Hansen line. I'm so excited to explore the entire range!

I know we got a bunch of stuff to try soy ladies please say exactly what it is you got!

I love the Carmindy for Saly Hansen line so much I may have to start watching the show! What did you ladies think?

K HALL! GREEN CHI TUESDAYS!

Mon, 05/19/2008 - 11:39pm
  • Body
  • Miscellaneous

Meg here to bring you a fabulous, new green line called K Hall. It's all 95% natural, cruelty free and made from all recyclabe and reusable materials. Wow! When this "Green Movement" came it really took hold. K Hall has been practicing their eco friendly practices for a decade!

I was sent a K Hall Grapefruit Mint Milled Shea Soap and a K Hall Scent Difuser in the aroma of "milk."

I was driving home when my roomie Lydia called to warn me about the awful scent that had crept into our home. It was Lydia's birthday a couple weeks back and being the popular gal she is, she came home with tons of different gorgeous floral arrangements in all sorts of vases. Unfortunately, the smell of the water and the dead flowers being cleaned up had fumigated our kitchen into a pretty foul smelling room. It was pretty strong but I told her that I was armed with a new difuser so we could test it out as soom as I got home.

We opened up our new difuser and as soon as we stuck the reeds in we set it in the window ledge above the kitchen sink. It only took about 10 minutes for the putrid smell to be replaced with an inviting aroma! Wafts of Milk, Vanilla and Coconut had now completely masked the original dead goldfish smell!
That was quite a test on its effectiveness and it completely passed with flying colors!

Here's what K Hall says "K. hall designs has been hand making reed diffusers longer than nearly any domestic company and we believe we have found the best elements to a successful product. Thinker reeds enable the scent to travel better and saturate the reeds thoroughly to disperse the scent effectively. We use only the highest quality essential and fragrance oils. We do not add fillers or enhancers. Our blend is made with cosmetic grade ingredients so it can be applied as a personal body scent. Filled in a shatterproof amber bottle, the oil is protects from light until use, maintaining the integrity of the scent. Our glass apothecary bottle is made expressly for k. hall designs and can be re-used or refilled. Finally, packed in a shipping tube, the set travels very well to the shop, shipped or carried home!"

We were both so impressed with K Hall's amazing home line that we were both highly anticipating our next experiment with their huge bar of Grapefruit Mint Milled Shea Soap. The soap smelled amazing as soon as it was unwrapped from the plastic. It lathers and it so creamy! It is packed with shea and cocoa butter so it makes your skin soft as buttah! They only use the highest qualities and I am dying to try the lilac! I loved this soap but since I live in LA I miss the scent of lilacs from back East.

LOTIS CONCEALER WITH SPF 30! NICOLE PAXSON!

Sun, 05/18/2008 - 9:03pm
  • Face
  • Miscellaneous

Meg here, so I love my grandmother to absolute bits and pieces but sometimes, after I've just closed a deal or have had some success , she always says "Oh Meg, that's great but just remember~ your health is more then wealth!" I usually laugh and say to her (she's funny so she laughs) "Oh Gram, that's great you ole bag but as Dorothy Parker says, I'll settle for a diamond encrusted wheelchair!" Then we chuckle and move on to who we think is secretly gay in our family

Look, the reality is, your health is no laughing matter and to say something as sane as that is immediately bringing down megsmakeup.com's street cred.

This is what brings me to Nicole Paxson. A charmed life indeed. Nicole is the daughter of Bud and Marla Paxson, founder’s of HSN and PAX TV. Nicole could be just another celebutante. Tons of everything, tons of connections, tons of....puke.
Not in the Hollywood-bulimia addict way. Nicole is sick in a real sick way. Poor girl has had LUPUS since age 12. If you don't know, along with the health stuff, it also makes you break out in horrible rashes. I don't know what butterflies have to do with it but that's what they're called in Lupus circles.

High School had to have been High Hell. Can you imagine having to go to school with the richiest, bitchiest, meanest Hollywood girls and having horrible rashes break out all over your face? As old gram points out, the cash can’t buy you health. Maybe some damn good doctors, but who needs doctors when you look like you exfoliated with a poison oak patte.

Being a makeup fiend for obvious reasons, she spent her recovery times mixing potions “Maybe if I mix this CoverGirl with this Chanel it will cover my redness.” Maybe “I add 3 parts Maybelline to One Part Almay and throw in some Clinique this will work!” You know what? It worked very temp and very far and few and Nicole was still not wanting to leave home.

Instead of getting PAX TV to make a show about her learning farming techniques and dolling up in an outhouse in Nebraska. Instead of releasing a sex tape. Instead of sitting home and crying, Nicole went to work!

This brings me to a product that covers, conceals and protects with SPF 30.

Most people cannot create a product around their illness. Nicole is no dummy and knows this. Even though her body has gone through treatments you and I cannot even imagine, the girl jumped in to solve her cover issues and everyone elses with skin problems and has helped raise over two million dollars for Lupus research taboot!

Her concealer product is called "Lotis" a "A great concealer is as hard to find as the endangered blue-winged Lotis butterfly itself. Lotis concealer stick with SPF 30 UVA/UVB covers all of your skin's uneven discolorations and keeps you looking younger and fresher from start to finish. From blemishes to dark circles, the lightweight and easy-to-use stick goes on smooth and silky, never dull. You can be confident that you are showing the world exactly what you want and concealing what you don't. Perfectly equipped with go-anywhere packaging it also has a quick-peak mirror, for anytime application. Flawless skin is hard to find, it’s nice to finally have something you can always depend on."

THE VERDICT? Good God, how I love this. I used to always go to The Balm Concealer but with my acrylic nails I would get a lot of wasted product! I LOVE the lipstick type application and how much coverage this provides. If you're reading this and have dark circle under eyes then look no further! If you have Any type of redness skin condition you need this!
Ladies, please let me know if Nicole Paxson Lotus Concealer with SPF 30 is your new go to!
added plus~ Exclusive to megsmakeup.com readers~you get 20% off any order with code NY225MM62L at checkout starts today, May 19th! FOR 2 DAYS!!

You're going to thank me for this suggestion! Anyone else tried this line? Chime on in!
