WET'N WILD'S WILD SHINE NAIL POLISH!
Gigi here, Alas, no Catholic elementary school tales for you today, just some incidents which may be of interest about nails and nail polish. It is a well known on this site that I devoured a gross of candy lipsticks as a toddler. My parents should have put me in rehab at that time, but they didn’t yet recognize my obsession with cosmetics and color. I used to love watching my mother doing her nails, generally in a classic red. Even the toxic scent was exhilarating. I was probably high from it. At age five, she asked if I wanted to try the polish as well. Did I want to try? I salivated down my shirt! I applied it as accurately as my small hands could as she sat smiling, but it was tough to stay inside those lines—they didn’t have big, wide black markings like my coloring books. Unfortunately, perfection had not been achieved. My mom asked me to let my nails dry while she went to check on dinner. Out of disgust for my mistakes, I licked the polish from each nail and started again, lapping away the errors. The next thing I knew, I was staring at my pediatrician! Then there were childhood times playing the game Monopoly with friends. When a player took too long, I was bored and put the red houses on each nail to resemble polish, as it had been banned from my life. Eventually someone would cry that I wasn’t fun, tell her parents, and the game broke up.
For Christmas when I was twelve, my parents gave me a bottle of Revlon nail enamel in a chic hue, as they were fairly certain that I would use remover this time. To be sure, they included a bottle. This was haute couture for nails! And then my older sister purchased two polishes for me in risqué tones for teens. These events marked my formal rite of passage into womanhood. Then came college. I sat in a poetry class with an amiable guy (Chris) and we would whisper about how the professor’s dentures didn’t fit well. He would mimic him and say, “Your next ashmignment is due on the sheventh of the month.” Then a clicking sound always followed. Chris and I had good times with this. After our last class, he asked me out. I said, “I’m sorry, but I have a boyfriend. Thank you anyway.” Chris looked like he was going to cry and spewed back, “You led me on the whole time.” I was upset and asked what led him on. I’ll never forget his remark: “Your nail polish and makeup are always perfect and that makes you a tease!” He put on his coat and was never seen again. Years later, I had a deadly staph infection which was misdiagnosed. By my second visit to the incompetents at the ER, the man playing a doctor looked at my nails and shouted, "Nurse--we need oxygen STAT! The patient is cyanotic and her fever and blood pressure are rising!" I said in a very annoyed tone, "Note the sheen. That is a blue nail basecoat by Avon, not my demise." And he was my lifeline? Yikes! An idiot nurse said, "Oh, my Avon saleswoman just quit. Do you know where I can find another?" I gave her a look to kill.
You know what this is about from this--nail polish, of course. As in a steal of a lifetime which you absolutely cannot afford to ignore! Nail enamel was always something that you could purchase to lift your spirits without breaking the bank or causing guilt. Now the industry has gone overboard with prices. I refuse to pay $20.00 for a bottle no matter the shade. I recently tried Wet 'n Wild's "Wild Shine" polish and I did cartwheels over it (okay, not cartwheels, but I did ride my stationery bike and dance around the house to "No Diggity.") This indulgence comes in a huge variety of shades. For my demure days, I chose a delicate, hand-me-my-fan Southern Belle pink. For my wild child nights, I plucked a vivid crimson from the shelf. To stay in fashion, I selected a deep, opulent forest green which resembles a fine gem and a captivating sapphire blue.
The enamel spreads flawlessly and leaves a glossy finish. You do not have to feign illness and call in late for work because you can't use your hands from wet polish--it dries well. Always use a base coat (I love those by Sally Hansen) to protect, prevent discoloration, and strengthen. As a trial, I went three days without a topcoat purposely and there was no chipping. This fares as well or better than its high-end competitors! I followed with a protective coat. If you need your hands to be instantly gorgeous, use Sally's "Quick Dry Top Coat." Are you sitting down? It is $.99. As in under a dollar. That's nearly as good as McDonald's value menu--it may even surpass a double cheeseburger! No, not that good. It seems as if Wet 'n Wild is discontinuing their eyeshadow quad I love so much. There are no shadows I haven't used, from MAC to Dior and YSL, and these are at the very top of my list. You may find them at a $2.00 price as I did. Trust me and stock up now! These are truly frugal yet effective drugstore deals. See me smiling?

i dont have a favorite polish brand. ive tried zoya, wet n wild, sally hansen, nyc, and opi so far. i want to try essie and mac nail polishes. nothing really has much lasting power. surprisingly, my cheapest polishes (wet n wild) last the longest on my nails.

I recently bought a post-Christmas clearance Wet 'n Wild nail polish gift set from CVS for $1.25. It includes TEN (10!) different colors and a nail file. I have no idea if they'll be any good or not, but I couldn't pass it up for the price. I've never tried Wet 'n Wild polishes, but I agree that there's no sense in paying $10+ for one bottle of a fancy brand when it's readily available for $0.99.
LOVED your review! My favorite polish brand is Sally Hansen Salon formula. It goes on soooo smoothly and I love the color selection. I also own a few Wet 'n Wild polishes, and think they are great too. I actually like my drugstore polishes better than OPI, which is too thick and goopy in my opinion.

I loved, loved your story! ^.^ Hmmm my favorite nail polish was by Wet 'n' Wild I think! It was bright, neon green! It does look good on my toes and it prevents people from stepping on my toes!

Oh, the bit about licking had me laughing! I've just started doing my nails, so I have no favourites yet but I agree, expensive is not always better. I bought a bottle of OPI and one from H&M, applies as beautifully, lasts as good.
I haven`t a favorite brand. The day after I apply nail polish, there is always chipping... I hate that because I`ve got to reapply twice or more and finally to remove the nail polish because I don`t like the manicure.
When I was a child my parents, actually more so my mother, were heavily into custom vehicles. The very earliest memory I have, and very possibly the reason why I am so deeply obsessed with cars, was of laying in the back of a Revlon deep burgundy shimmer panel van wrapped in one of those cute baby shawls. I can remember the soft cotton brushing against my cheeks as I moved, and the melody of the engines purr. I felt safe. That's one of the most happy memories I have. I've been told that I couldn't have been older than 3 months, as my parents sold that vehicle then. I don't remember the vehicle it's self, but the reason I mention it is because one of my mothers little tricks for her vehicles was to go shopping for a nail polish she loved, and then match the paint to it. Then, if the vehicle got a stone chip on the way to a show she could do a touch up with her nail polish before the judges saw it! When I was in my 5th year of high school, and knowing that for the first year I'd be able to attend the school ball, I grew my nails long. Being poor, my family couldn't afford to buy me a dress, but my mother being a very do-it-yourself woman made me a stunning floor length crushed velvet Chinese collar dress in that very same deep burgundy. Though, the almost hip length split in the side of it was more than a tad on the embarrassing side, that was easily forgotten the moment my mother pulled out that nail polish. I felt truly stunning in it. All night other girls commented on how beautiful the dress was, but more than that how gorgeous the polish was ...... you know ... I'm going out to buy me some new nail polish tomorrow lol
... sanity is relative, insanity is quantum mechanics ...
I love Wet N Wild! It really does have some nice staying power. Maybe a little better than the expensive brands. I type a lot so I always have chipping after a few days no matter the brand. Wet N Wild is cheap enough for me to be able to afford to do all of the touch ups I have due to my typing habit. They also have tons of color options so I can have some funky toes while I have some sheer color on my fingers. Thanks Gigi for an awesome review!
I'd love to try OPI and China Glaze but then um... I like the colors in the bottles not a big nail polish person myself though.
I love trying the really funky color on my toes. And I am so going off topic here, but OPI for Sephora has a new green (saw it in InStyle this month) that is gorgeous! And have you seen the Alice in Wonderland collection from OPI? You can get all 4 colors in the little bottles and the blue sparkle would look great over the color Gigi is showing from WnW. My girls use WnW all the time, but I really prefer OPI and OPI for Sephora is even better. I guess some people go to Starbucks everyday (no judging - read on) and my guilty pleasure comes from the slightly pricier nail polish. If you don't have any guilty pleasures - get busy!
I love love love OPI nail polish so much color !!!
Diamond are Girl Best Friend !!!
Thanks for the awesome review, GiGi! Your reviews never fail to make me laugh. I've used WNW before, mind you that was years ago, and had issues with chipping but didn't care because of the price. Now, they're making a better formula?! Did someone alert the President?! For goodness sake, $.99 for a nail polish that stays should be national news! Okay, well maybe not, but it is awesome! I love candy colored fingers and toes. Personally, my favs are blues and purples but I've been known to stray into a shimmery pink or two. Being on a very tight budget means I've had to give up a lot, but this I can do with the money from my change cup. :D
Ooh I love nail polish, I'm so excited about this post! I am leaving work early today and now the drugstore is another stop added to my errands for the afternoon! I remember when I was little my mom always bit her nails, so as a remedy she would get weekly manicures. Now, her nails are perfect! I can't afford the weekly manicures, but the .99cents nail polish?!? That's a must!
Got the 10 colors Christmas set for a clearance price of $3.50---such a deal. No subtle colors there so I will stick with Essie---but a good little gift for little girls.
i love OPI colors... they last forever
Loved the review! I like China Glaze, but with a good topcoat you can use any brand and make it look good. I have used Wet 'n Wild, I actually like quite a few of their products, you can't go wrong for the price. I still remember one Christmas when I was about 15, my extremely cheap brother bought me a Lancome nail polish for Christmas (that's not the cheap part) and wanted our 5 year old sister to reimburse him for half the cost, and she refused! She initially said that she would, but then when it came time to actually part with her $3 or so, she couldn't do it. I walked in on many arguments between the 2 of them that ceased the moment I walked in the door, and I never found out why until I opened my nailpolish on Christmas Day.
Gigi, a nice swipe of the tongue can fix just about anything, can't it??? Right now I'm loving OPI. If you time it right, just before the seasons change, you can get most of them on sale. They offer great coverage, resist chipping and the colors never disappoint. Funny post Gigi, perfect way to start my day!
My favourite nail polish brand is OPI. I like them for their interesting names and colours, and more importantly for the quality. It glides on and lasts long with minimal chipping.
What a "fun" girl you must have been? LOL! I haven't tried the W & W polish yet,the displays always seem to look pretty ransacked so I figure that it must be great-stuff! However,I am never without a lipliner by them in #666 and neither are most great makeup artists! I will hunt down one of their shining-shades of fabulous next visit, mess be dammed,LOL! I adore anything by Deborah Lippmann: once you get past the "price",you will realize that you use less,it lasts longer, and the colors are UNIQUE! Hands down the best I've ever used...However,let me also say that my toes are currently SO beautifully painted by me (I hate pro-pedis,I do my own) in THE most current and gorgeous shade of red-coral in Sally Hanson's "Complete Salon Formula"...."All Fired Up!"This product is a total WOW! One step formula does it all, amazing patented brush, and the color is so creamy and rich it rivals the best of the best IMO...lots of shades too! Thanks for yet another inspiring glimpse into ond helluva' beautiful woman aka GiGi! :)
I gave up buying my own polish a few years ago when I realized how horrific my nail painting skills were compared to the nail tech's abilities when I started getting pedicures :) I used to use cheap polish all the time, but I find that I get the best results when I have a salon do it with OPI polish.
I use OPI or Avon nail polish, but I never get around to painting my fingernails too often.
i love wet n wild
GReat Review GIGI,I am always impressed with Wet And Wild products they are so cheap (in a good way lol) and the color on the picture is CRAZY I have many many many nail polishes and my favorites aren't my Chanel or YSL ones but the SinFul colors ($2) cause the color are sooo pretty , I never tried any W&W polishes thought but when I see how glossy your nails I just want to go to walgreens like right now =)

LOL “You led me on the whole time.” I was upset and asked what led him on. I’ll never forget his remark: “Your nail polish and makeup are always perfect and that makes you a tease!” Note to self, always perfect makeup and nails = tease good to know LOL!! I love your stories Gigi!!! I too own Wet'N Wild's wild shine Nailpolish and I love it so much!! It goes on like DREAM. No clumps, and I love the brush and the size of the bottle. Sadly, its hard to find in Canada...but maybe Zellers will be my saving grace (I haven't been there for a while maybe I'll pick up some sweet red Vancouver 2010 mitts with the maple leafs on them and see if the still sell Wet'N Wild!!) Thanks for the great review!
Gigi, you slay me! When I read your stories, I think "bless her Mama's heart - this one must have been a real pip to raise!" I hope you know that is meant in a loving way :-)The only W&W item I've ever used is the 666 lipliner. But I guess I'm headed to my local Walgreen's to check out the nail polishes today. You should get a commission on the number of things they've been able to sell me on your recommendations!

I agree- i would never pay more than 1-2 bucks for a nailpolish. Especially, since i only paint my toes :) I love Wet-n-Wild as well but my favorite shade was from Rimmel 60 seconds dry.
O.P.I. would probably be my favorite. I really love everything about there line. The products work great, last, and stay on. Plus, they have the most brilliant sets of colors (with cool names)! The only thing is that they cost to much for my current budget. So, with that I have been using Wet N Wild. They have good products to, but they are wayyyy cheaper!
Let's all enjoy the Summer sunshine!
I use sally hansen and wet and wild but neither holds up to my daily grind.
I love, love, LOVE nail polish. I never really care all that much about brand. I have a few of the same brand that I really like, but I don't know the name of. I have 4 bottles of OPI which I like: a strengthening coat, a chip preventer, a top coat and a glittering red. I really like it, but I sometimes find that I need two coats. My nails are currently blue and green, since I can never decide on color. I know that 5 years down the road, I'll think myself young and idiotic to mismatch my fingernails like I do, but I don't care right now. I'm just not a simple light pink or black polish type of girl.
wow, sounds great!
Personally, I like OPI. It's a good price, the quality isn't bad and they have nice colours.
i looove sally hansen x-treme wear. it's cheaper then this one, and it lasts a lot longer for me :D hope they keep making it.
My favorite brand is OPI, but I also frequently buy China Glaze, Zoya and Orly.

That colour reminds me of my childhood, my brother had a blue car, and it has a little blottle of paint to repair scratches with a brush as a nail polish one... so yes, I painted my nails blue with car painting.I think it was good for my nails, now they never broke.

I don't have a favorite brand as it always seems as if formulas vary within a brand. Essie is usually a never fail brand for me but I picked up one of the fall colors (Chinchilly) and it had the teeniest brush. Then I picked up Van D'go from the spring line and the brush was back to normal but the formula was thick and clumpy. OPI is usually good for creams and shimmers but I don't like their sheers very much. I like Sally Hansen's Xtreme wear and their old Salon formula but HATE the new Salon formula witht he weird brush and thick, streaky formula.
Great stories! hahaha. My current fave brand is Sinful Colors. It's $1.99 for full sized bottle, the colors are gorgeous and they stay on for a long time! I found them at a local Walgreens and am currently sporting my hot pink glitter shade to shake away the winter-y blah-ness of the season. The beach aint so fun with 4 feet of snow on it. Beautiful to see, not so fun if you want a tan.
I have that one nail polish in the very same color!! :) I have to say its amazing for the price ;)
I wish I was brave enough to try bright shades of nail polish, but I always stick to reds. Great review, really made me giggle :)
so i got this lovely little box from a local drug store. heck i live withing walking distance of at least 5 but no i had to send away for my prize, my pretty , my sweetest indulgence..... 16 bottles of sinful nail polish. I fell in love with the colors in in style and i had to have them. I dont walks very well these days so walking distance for me is the living room.In this respect i am ever grateful for ebay which provides me with a way to squander my salary without moving my butt. I love color, eye shadow and powder and especially lipstick and nail polish. My mother god bless her, used to kid me that i should have become a hooker to use all the makeup. I think the life of a demi-monde is not suc a bad thing, classy title that. So back to nail polish. I did the expensive nail poish but rarely did they have great colors. Revlon does keep current and i also love the burgundy velvet colors they seem to favor. Wet and WIld is the best bargain in store,no doubt and it doesn't chip much. My Christmas present to me was OPI's Sephora nail polish and although the colors are pretty it isn't too durable.I am hanging my hopes on Sinful, the colors are like butter, so to speak, sort of the nail equivalent of rolling around naked on satin sheets after a fragrant bath. Yes,they really are that beautiful. so wish me luck. Why so many??? Free Shipping and handling with purchases over $25.00/ What girl can resist that???

i've never really been into nail polish, growing up my dad never allowed me to wear them.. he worked with chemicals and told me how deadly nail polishes are and constant inhale did make me dizzy when i was applying it onto my toes.I have a few nail polishes lying around here and there, they've been in my room for dragon years. now, i only paint my nails for special occasions, or paint my toe nails when i'm wearing peep toe heels or anything with my toes sticking out. but i can't paint my fingers because it's always stuffing food in my mouth!

Oh Gigi!! How you make me laugh!! How your mother ever survied raising you is beyond me!! You must have been at the clinic every other week with all the cosmetics you've ingested!! LOLI had gotten away from wet and wild polish, because their displays are always such a mess, it's hard to sort thru them, I did pick up a Maybellene that I really liked, that lasted and lasted, but because of your review the next time I'm out, I'm going to check out the ole stand by wet and wild. I used to buy polish by the boat load, and kept it in the fridge. People would come by and open my fridge looking for something to eat or drink and they might find milk, bagels and nail polish! They thought I was strange!! LOL
My favorite brand at the moment is zoya, because it doesn't contain lots of the toxic nasties other brands do. My 6 year old and I play 'manicures', but she hasn't yet eaten any of the polish, lol. I bet my 2 year old would down a bottle if she got the chance though.

Ah..nail polish...my new obsession! I recently bought a Wet'N Wild in gunmetal. LOVE it! I'm also quite fond of Rimmel. I like wearing darker shades on my fingernails. It makes (I think anyway) my fingers look not quite so stubby! :-)
I love, love, love to look at thebeautiful nail polish colors on the display racks...some years ago i had acrylic nails, it was the first time I'd ever had long pretty nails, and the color stuck like there was no tomorrow, but the time came when I had to take them off. My nails took some time to re-coop and now I have healthy hard finger nails (hubby loves to have his back lightly scratched) BUT...here is the kicker, ail polish doesn't stick to my nails, I use base coatsand polish quick dry and I have sat not moving my finders an inch to make sure the polish I applied is in fact DRY...but to no avail. My toenails never have n issue...its crazy! I've finally given up. I just admire the beautiful nail polishes from afar.... :(
i love O.P.I,,,,, they have a wide variety of colors and the new matte colors are so HOTT! n i have a boy so no nail polish sessions anytime soon! lol
Sinful Colors...they are super cheap and last as long as some of the more expensive brands. Last week I bought some Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear which was on sale at the drugstore, and I ended up taking it off today because I was sick of my bright yellow nails. I was surprised by how long it stayed on and how little it chipped.
Ooh Gigi, you've hit me with this article! There's nothing I love MORE than nail-polish - the brighter the better - and after always using OPI and swearing off anything 'cheap' and inferior, you've piqued my interest with this budget brand! Also the shadows sound like amazing value.. I must hunt around and see if I can get my hands on them down under!
I really enjoyed reading this article, my mum is cant have enough nail polishes freak whilst Im more of a cant have enough make up freak! I actually leave my nails bare most of the time since they're quite lovely natural, I get loads of compliments about my nails actually, they always have a bit of length to them and their hard as rocks hehe
http://tinas30dayshred.blogspot.com/
My favorite brands include OPI, China Glaze, Essie, and Nubar. At this very moment I'm mesmerized by the Nubar Emerald Sparkle. So pretty.
OMG I LOVE nail polish, my mom would always yell at me when I was younger because anytime she asked me to do anything I couldn't because my nails were wet. My mom is an avon lady and I would order all kinds of polishes and then never pay for them so again my mom was mad, but it was totally worth it. I've only been using OPI as I'm in another state so can't get my mom's avon deals and I just love the rich colors and staying power, but your review is forcing me to go to Target and stock up on polish and shadow. OPI is $8, not the most expensive but when you need EVERY shade it adds up. Thank so much for the review. You answered any question I could've had on these polishes.
