GRANDPA'S WONDER PINE TAR SOAP!
Megken here - Do you have certain songs that remind you of a time in your life? When I hear "Copacabana" by Barry Manilow I can't help but think of the first time I went to sleep-away camp. Particularly, the day I commented on the sunbathing girls being so shiny (it was because they were covering themselves in baby oil) I was made fun of the rest of the summer. I just asked a question, "Why are they shiny?".
Am I the only one who has strong memories that get triggered by scent? I recently tried a shampoo called Grandpa's Wonder Pine Tar. Now there's nothing in a name "Grandpa's Wonder Pine Tar Shampoo" thatscreams "hip and cool" like, Thermasilk, Bodacious, Infusium 23, Salon Selective, Finesse or that sound exotic like Garnier Fructis Shampoo.
Sometimes you women will buy something just because of how it's named. It was Shakespeare who wrote, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." The Pine Tar fragrance smells like a campfire. It is unlike anything on the market. It has a distinct aroma of pine oil. It reminds me of another summer camp moment. This memory was when I was sitting with Gale Bockner and Michelle Cibner on a log that had a flaw. I was about to sit down, Gale pointed the flaw out to me by saying, "You're sitting on a crack." I was quick to respond, "It's okay, I always sit on a crack, don't you?" Not bad for 11 year old wit.
I don't think I would ever purchase a product this old-school if it
wasn't for Megsmakeup.com and my duties to all of you. I may have gone my whole life without trying it. I think everybody should try it once because it is a unique experience in the shower. It's such an
opportunity to wash your hair with a campfire. They say it's a family
recipe from 1878. Just to give you an idea of how long ago that is,
it's the year the first US store installed light bulbs! (Philadelphia).
This is a very interesting company, they even make a gum that says it gets rid of toothaches. They sell t-shirts that say, "Grandpa Beats the
tar out of other soaps!" The part of the site that is so worth looking at is their Curiosities page. It is the part of their site with their customer's testimonials.
One of their users wrote in "I am a 37 year old housewife, mother, and
grandmother." It's just scary for me to think I am "grandparent" age.
This nice lady from Buffalo, NY says it cured a mild case of psoriasis, her daughter's acne, made her dog's coats thicker and shinier. I wish there was a joke I could make about the shiny coats of the dogs and the girls shining at camp! I can't think of anything witty, oh the yearning to be quick witted again-just like when I was 11...

wow that sounds very interesting campfire scented soap! Thanks:)
The scents of vanilla, of lemongrass remind me of my childhood in South Africa. I still remember the scent of hot ground when I went to my pool, or lied down on the ground! Songs that remind me of my childhood are :Because you loved me (Celine Dion), Kiss from a rose (Seal), Macarena, all the Disney songs!
The smell of a wood stove reminds me of my grandfather. He passed away when I was four, but by then I had dubbed him "Grandbob" because my grandmother would call him "Bob" and everyone else wanted me to say "Grandpa." I really miss him, but the memories are enough to keep me happy.
Smells that remind me of my past are: Ysatis by Givenchy (a perfume worn by mom), that of the sea (which reminds me of the holiday), vanilla (one of the first perfume I wore); the songs, which remind me of my childhood are those of Disney, those of Michael Jackson, like Thriller, Black or White, also Celine Dion (the album "D'eux",was the first album that I had with the famous "Pour que tu m'aimes encore "lol). ;-)
Smells like a campfire eh? My hubby might be interested in this, sure doesn't grab me however!!All my songs of memory are waaaaaaay too old to mention here!! haha
I have a white box of this in the closet from years ago!

Anything by CCR reminds me of the past
This really is considered to be a tried and true "remedy" for many issues and for getting a manly-man clean! I have heard of people actually chewing a hunk or tar (the real stuff) to clean their teeth as well. I'd probably like the smell, have seen it on the shelf at "Whole Foods" and WILL now sniff it out and bring a bar home to Mike thanks to you! I also know that the fabulous "LUSH" now has a couple of cleansers based on something like coal or tar, more refined I guess that's intended for problem skin?"Why are they shiny..." :) I just love you Megken! I once got physically thrown out of a bar in Mexico into the dirt on my ass (long story...) and we'll suffice it to say that AC/DC was playing in the background. I love AC/DC to this day as well as that ONE TIME in my life when I was SUCH a bad-ass girl I got booted,HAHAHA!
smells like campfire?! i loooove camp. it smells amazing.. it's nice to see someone taking that step to make something different (:
I have a tar shampoo bar from Lush...it is effective, I'll give it that, but it smells burnt long after my hair has dried. Not an attractive scent at all, not even on a man. Though...the memories! Orange, banana and tar...that brings childhood right back. :)
interesting review! i might have to try this out! :D
Pretty funny yet again, Megken. I don't know what pine tar smells like, but if it smells like campfires then maybe I should buy this for my husband. Bless his heart, he can't start a campfire to save his life, so maybe this would make him feel better about his boyscout abilities. I like the look of this soap; it would be a cool display soap for a bachelor's bathroom.
Campfire soap just seems totally weird to me, not like a "body" type of smile. I guess you wouldn't know until you try though! The song where it says "holiday inn", always reminds me of a road trip to San Diego. Our car broke down, and we finally got to the hotel (Holiday Inn) and kept singing the song. Another trip I went on, and the very end when we got off at the exit and the song "happy ending" came on. Perfect song for the moment!
Let's all enjoy the Summer sunshine!
Anything vanilla reminds me of the past for some reason:)
Gardenias remind me of the time I spent with my gramps as a kid. Good memories playing out in the yard, jump roping, blowing bubbles...
This is not the scent for me :) I love sweet scents but this sounds perfect for many men i know!!!! I always think of my childhood when i smell honeysuckles and or marshmallows toasting.....2 of my favorite childhood memories revolve around these 2 items :)
The smell of pineapples, coconuts and sunscreen remind me of my favourite vacation with my bf, his sister and late brother in law. These smells make the memories so much more vivid and help remember the good in memories, when the current situation seems bleak.
sounds like it would be a very nice gift for my brother who happens to love camping, hiking, and the outdoors, but not for me.. lol
Sounds great! My parents both use Soak & Float Solid Shampoo by Lush and I always thought it smelt like a campfire. They were always asking me if Lush make a soap that smelt the same! Mum uses the shampoo because it helps her dandruff and stops her from getting an itchy scalp so it doesn't surprise me that the soap helped cure a case of mild psoriasis. Hopefully it makes its way down to Australia! Then my parents would be very happy!
Megken, you're just not really selling it, lol. I have heard that coal tar is awesome for eczema prone skin and other skin conditions, but I don't particularly want my head to smell like a campfire, lol!
Lily - Mineral makeup Junkie!!!
Any song that I used to listen to, but not anymore reminds me of the past. I like to connect a song to my emotions when I am listening to it. For example, Standing Still by Jewel reminds me of one of my ex's...
Haha, Megken I can't believe you're grandparents age either!! Great review, I adore reading your funny snippets. I don't think I'll try this product as I'm not a huge fan of pine, but I'm sure there are a few readers who are enamoured by it. : ]
Not a fan of pine either but sounds so old school and exciting lol =D
Innnnteresting. Not sure about the sound of the smell either. I wonder if the bf will like it

wow that sounds so interesting !thanks for the article :]
OMG, Megken, Copacabana is totally one of my special songs! I first heard it in college, where my summer roommate would play it all the time. She even substituted me into the song: "Her name was Kitty/ She was a showgirl/ With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there!" We would sing loudly in our little apartment. Those were the days...Great review! Thanks. :)
♥ Lipgloss and Spandex: a blog for gals who look good and run fast
I so agree that certain smells remind you ofcertain times of your life. The smell of Clinque facial soap reminds me of a college roommate. The scent of White Linen remind me of my first mentor. It was her signature scent. Memories and scents seem to be tied together. Many of them really take me back in time.
This product just doesn't appeal to me at all. I always like reading the articles here though. :)

4711 - instant Granpa reminder. My Grandfather used to douse himself in this stuff - he was Italian and liked to look sharp. It's mixed in with the smell of clay (he was an amazing potter) and cigarettes - which he let me puff on when I was a toddler - along with sips of red wine. And people wonder why ended up the far side?Gum to get rid of toothache? Talk about multi-tasking. I have a real affection for old-fashioned stuff like this - you can't see Clinique throwing in a gum to get rid of toothache with their anti-wrinkle stuff. As for the 37 year old granma - yikes - gotta check out their site now.

I haven't used tar soap but I do use TGel for my hair at least twice a week. It really does make a difference!
I have heard great things about this product. when I smell wood burning stoves it reminds me of a great time of my childhood.
Campfire soap sounds interesting. I think a scent similar to baby powder would remind me of the past. But it's not really a scent that I personally like.
I don't think I would personally be into this, since it's a scent I dont like, but it sounds interesting :D
Hmm what scents remind me of the past?? Would have to be that Gap Dream eau de toilette it reminds me of being in school and trying to be "cool" lol perfumes I used to wear but don't anymore always remind me of the past.
Spearmint reminds me of my Grandma who passed away 5 years ago. She was chewing spearmint gum! I miss you, Granny! <3
Love the "crack" joke Megken! You aren't kidding, kids are far more witty than their adult counterparts! Lucky for you, you've still got that 11 year old inside you somewhere (hopefully, we all do)! Thanks to Meg, I have tried interesting products that I never would have experimented with in the past. Some have even brought about total transformations in my routine and complexion. Great post, very funny.... But, why is it SO shiny???
I love the smell of campfire but not on me. I am sure a lot of men would love the scent.
I use their sulfur on my back and it really works for back acne.
You know, I wasn't really feeling it... and then you said this: "It's such anopportunity to wash your hair with a campfire." Now I must own it.
Smells like a campfire? Interesting, haha. I might get it, but I can probably live without it.
eugh, i like the smell of campfire but only as a reminder of all the fun i had camping the day before, not on my soap to feel clean with. Weird. Maybe it is great hahah lol
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
wow sounds like a miracle soap!
Laura Buck
hmm Pine Tar. Reminds me of major league baseball incidents from the 80s!
That remind's me of my grandparent's-my grandfather used to use coal tar soap too -it was a massive yellow bar called lifebuoy-I think it's still for sale. The smell of rockets(flowers)always remind me of my grandmother because she planted lots around the back of our house and they are very very scented every summer a huge drift of them still grow's.

I love the smell of the campfire but as a shampoo...? But maybe if it's on a guy I like. ;D

I don't like the idea of a campfire scented soap, not even on my husband. Both of us tend to smell like smoke often enough because we heat our house with a woodstove, so I like to avoid adding to that if possible.

I have mild psoriasis and would love to see if this works. I usually only get it on the knees and elbows, but it's such a pain to get rid of. Does it smell like burning wood and leaves and cold nights? I love that smell! I want my hair to smell like that all the time!

Personally I can't stand the smell of pine tar, so I'd have to have a sniff of this before I ever brought it. I have a lot of smells which remind me of things, though the only one that reminds me of happy childhood memories is the smell of petrol or bog.
... sanity is relative, insanity is quantum mechanics ...
My mom suffers from psoriasis, I wonder if this stuff would work well for her. Thanks for the post!
The smell of the spring flowers and cutting grass remember me the smell of the past when i was child !!! <3
