MOTHERHOOD, WHAT'S THAT GLOW YOU SPEAK OF?
Meg here, my hysterical friend Kate has started a blog on her mommy musings called LoveandKnuckles.
If you're a mother you should definitely check it out! If you're not a mother but still feel the need to have witty insights on everything from Pop Culture to Politics then you'll love it there too.
Kate has been having some issues with her skin post baby and she wanted to pen an open letter to any of you mothers reading. What are your thoughts?
Dearest Makeup Friends,
Kate Casey here! Remember when you had your baby and you felt like a Mack Truck hit you? Remember all the times you balked when someone told you that when you have a girl she takes away your beauty? How many times have you stared at yourself in the mirror and wondered who the haggard old lady is looking back at you? I have, my friends, joined the sisterhood.
My sister has two kids and said the first thing I need to do was get a facial. She explained that you need to maintain your skin the same way you would do for your car (wait, I have neglected that too). I went to a local spa, got a great facial, and was able to buy some great products. I wanted to share, because I know how much it helps to get advice from other mothers about good products. The last thing you want to do is waste your money on beauty products you will use once and throw away. Wouldn't you rather spend that money on a few cocktails with friends?
The first thing I bought was a Clarisonic Pro, which basically sand blasts all your dead skin. Arcona makes a great white tea purifying cleanser. It is light and smells like citrus. Finally I round out the process with a few products from Epicuren. The Protein Mist is an enzyme-activated toner and feels great on your freshly showered skin. I follow this with the Facial Emulsion Enzyme Moisturizer and the Moisture Surge Hyaluronic Acid Gel.
I had to have professional pictures taken for work a week after I started using these products and it makes a world of difference. It made me almost embarrassed to look back at pictures I had taken with my daughter a few weeks prior. Well, I guess I still have plenty of time to embarrass her.
Much love,
Kate
Did any of you new momma's have to make some changes in your skin routine once your offspring showed up?

I don't have kids, but I love my Clarisonic!
I noticed all sorts of things when I was pregnant and after I had my daughter, during my pregnancy my hair began growing like crazy! I pulled my hair back into a pony tail one afternoon and I had SIDEBURNS! they completely circled my ears! my hair was noticably darker as it grew in too, it was creepy! After I had her the crazy sideburns went away. my skin was easy to break out post pregnancy, minor break-outs. after almost a year my skin began to clear up.I guess my hormones played a big part in that. You and your daughter are very beautiful!
is that your daughter?! she is beyond adorable. so much hype about the clarisonic.. i feel like i should start saving up for now since it seems like a took i'd use forever!
I'm not a mom, but I'm glad to hear that Kate got good results from the Clarisonic. After reading so many good things about it on this website and others, I think I'm going to splurge and get one (probably a Mia). Of course, I've been saying that about a ton of products lately, so I need to make a priority list.
Wow it's amazing how much your body changes when you become pregnant. And I guess it's different for everyone too so it would be hard to find the right combination of products. What a trial!

I love my Clarisonic. I cannot wait to hear everyones tips. (However, my child is a four legged Great Dane.)
I'm a soon to be fist time mama, (due in April!) and I can totally relate to the changes you see in your skin. I agree as a gal who gives facials for a living that keeping up w/your skin care regimen is important, although I always tend to be pampering others all the time, it's hard to find time for my own skin pampering! I really like the products you mentioned and am going to splurge on a clairisonic brush as soon as I get my tax return!
I have 5 year old but i didn't notice any changes!
I bought some Epicurean products and they did not make me look nearly as beautiful as you do!
i love my clarisonic too! i got the mia, does the job fine :) i am also a huge fan of the HA's great for dehydrated skin :)
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
Awh. I am not a mom - and hopefully will not be one for awhile. The picture is totally ADORABLE though! So cute. (:

No kiddies here, but I love my Clarisonic! I'm more worried about my skincare when I (way down the line) actually get pregnant, as I won't be able to use some of my skincare product like Retin A, eek!
im pregnant now and i have definetly noticed my skin is more acne prone, but that has just got me in a good habit of washing and moisturizing. my skin is also dryer...thank god cocoa butter is wonderful
Haggard woman? Where? There's a radiant, glowy woman with an adorable baby but I don't know about an old haggard woman... If those products could give me that sort of radiating happiness, I'd swim in them! I'm totally going to check out your blog.
cute baby!!!

I don't have kids, but I have heard great things about Clarisonic from folks here and other boards.I went to the blog and read "Babies Can't Walk Dogs, College Friends, and Another Blind Item." The anecdote about the the 55 year old lady had me in stitches! LOL.
i dont have kids!! But it sounds scary and lots of scary things happen to you!! hehehe
My skin didn't change that much after I had my boys, but after I stopped nursing my last little one, my hormones went crazy! It was like post partum depression had delayed until then. With the hormones, I broke out with deep and painful cycstic acne all over my face, but very concentrated on my cheeks. I felt like a 16 year old boy!!! If finally started clearing up 3 or 4 months after that. I still have breakouts now (at 33) which is kind of embarassing. And I'm still working on fading all of the scars.

i don't have a kid, but i do use a clarisonic pro!!
I found that once I had children I no longer had time for myself or my skin. I should really make the time.
oh dear, i don't want to think of the hormonal inbalance when i have a child. it's bad enough now... I feel like i'm going through puberty at 20! now i'm super curious and need to consult my mother in regards to hormonal chances after giving birth to me..

Thanks guys!I think the cleansers they sell with the Clarisonic work really well. I think as long as the cleanser exfoliates it should work. Make sure you moisturize afterwards as it does a really good job removing the old skin cells and will make your face slightly red. I found that after I had the baby was skin looks ashy. Your hormones do such a number on you post-baby you need to change up your skin care routine. ALSO... Bobbi Brown makes a balm you can put over your makeup, which makes it look really dewy. Here is it: http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/templates/products/spp/index.tmpl?CAT...Thank you to all checking out my blog. Katehttp://loveandknuckles.blogspot.comwww.twitter.com/katecasey
I just read your match.com story on your blog, I LOVE it! I too met my husband on match.com and had to sift through some weirdo's to find him. :)

I don't have any kids yet and, after reading all the responses abut how many skin problems woman are having because of it, I am not at all sure I want to.

Thanks for the tip on the Bobbi Brown balm, I'm going to check it out. Sometimes when I finish my makeup I feel like it lacks a certain glow but I don't want to be too "glowy". And you are gorgeous, and so is your baby!
Kate - you and your baby are both gorgeous! And after reading your blog, I realize you are smart and very funny too. Wish I lived in California so I could be your friend (a older, Mom-ish friend). Never had kids of my own and I'm dying to be a grandmom. Thank God for my stepdaughters - I may have a shot at it.

This would be a fun question to ask my mom.
after i had my daughter I started getting cystic acne which i never had before, but i also got on the mirena IUD 6 weeks after having her and I think that think has a lot ot do with it. My hair is continueing to fall out and grow back in and my daughter turned 2 today! Damn MIrena...lol..i'm getting it out next month then i'll see what happens to my skin.
She still looks great! Interesting article.http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/Flamess
Kate, you and your baby doll are beautiful! And your blog is a hoot!
that child is precious!
You look gorgeous! And so does the little one :)
Sometimes with your first, you don't realise you ARE allowed to take five minutes for yourself in the morning - but I'm glad you did. Your new finds sound delightful!
No children here, but I love hearing about new bloggers =) Beautiful photo as well!
You and your little one are beautiful and look so happy together! Your blog is a hoot,LOL! SO nice to have you here with us...All I can say is Darlin' you ain't seen NOTHING yet? Wait until you are smack-dab in the joys of "middle age" and start having those hormonal-issues without hormones,LOL! Enjoy your little beauty and have fun!
I agree with seeingstars, you are so smart to be taking care of yourself after having your first baby. I completely lost touch with all my skin care needs after my first and boy did my face suffer. I believe good facials are key, and I love my Clairsonic also
I have 4 children and I have had to completely change my skincare routine with each child, not to mention my hair care, nail care and so on. Having children changes more than your life it changes every bit of your body inside and out as well. That is why babies are so cute....so we cannot hold a grudge!

Clarsonic brush is a wonderful idea for a baby gift---for the Mama. Thanks for an inspriation. It is like getting a mini-facial every day.
I have poly cystic ovary syndrome, I had severe acne when I was young and huge blood clots w/ my period, I was very thin w/ terrible pimples, after my pregnancy, I had clear skin. When I got older I started having facial hair, whiskers, on my neck. I have weight gain and hirsutism, I get electrolysis for the whiskers. I use philosophy micro-delivery peel and youthful essence, I also do M Asam facial cream and eye cream, I am using a Claudel foaming facial wash and serum. I have a Jurlique herbal recovery gel that works very well. I have to do more to keep my skin clear now. My pregnancy, even tho it was over 20 years ago, made my face clear up. I love the way my skin looked when I was pregnant. Women w/ thyroid and other hormonal issues usually have their best look when pregnant bc our bodies balance when we're pregnant.
im not a mom, but i have heard many stories of the changes that happen when u become one. u and ur daughter look adorable! :D
no children for me...but....when my friends get pregnant i try to go out and get something special for my skin (makes me feel younger)...:)
I'm not a mommy yet.... but those skin care products sound fabulous!
Gracie
no children as of yet, but thanks for the product recommendation
Love the blog name! For me it wasn't my skin that took the blow when I had children, it was my teeth and my tummy (tummy doesn't really shrink back when you have kids premature).
I'm not a mom yet, but I am amazed at how much it changes your body- and not just your belly, but your face and hair and things like that! Not something I look forward to, but it'll be worth it!
Pregnancy does the weirdest things to you, to your body your skin and your hair! I now have curly hair after having my daughter, and my skin is in serious need of some pamperingi tell you what, I didn't feel glowing when I was pregnant either.... You know what, pregnancy sucks, but the results are so worth it. I do however think it is the girls that do it to you, have you ever noticed that moms with only boys always look so young? I found a couple gray hairs the other day.... I am not happy about this...
Sooooo many changes! my skin became really sensitive whilst i was pregnant (my daughter is now two) but sometimes things still really irritate my skin (nothing did before)The worst/wierdest/funniest thing that happened to me while pregnant is that if i laughed to much i would burst into tears (and i mean loud uncontrollable sobbing, then i would be laughting again, then crying!) This happened in restaurants, the cinema (watching superbad) at peoples houses etc, the worst thing is it still happens now!!!! (i literally sob everytime i watch an episode of russel brands ponderland!) I asked my health visitor about this and she looked at me like i was mad and said she had never heard of this before! :/ I am not depressed and dont feel sad when im crying its like when you cry because you are so happy but its loaud sobs!!!! my family find it hillarious! =D I am adding a clarisonic to my wishlist-I have heard nothing but good things about it! Oh and i will definately be checking out this blog. x
not a mom, but i would stick to natural products- they are good for you and your baby, especially if you are breast-feeding :) I have tried many products but the best ones were the simplest ones- argan oil and palm oil!
How interesting! I haven't had children, and I doubt I will having access to my s/o's two from a previous marriage. This way I get the best of both worlds - the beautiful, loving moments and being able to give them back! ; ] Great review, I love hearing about good products!
I don't have any kids yet but I think that clairisonic pro looks really neat!!
i haven't kids yet but sounds interesting !!!
