L'OREAL EXCELLENCE TO GO! HAIRCOLOR!

LOREAL10Hi Ladies! Happy first Body Beautiful review for January 2010 from Jeanasina's world! Today I want to talk especially to those of you who color your hair at home or are thinking about coloring your hair at home. Oh, and those of you who have a shady collection of dolls you have purchased from the thrift store because you like to dye the dolls hair and then dress them up to look like people you know, you can read this too. It concerns hair color and need for speed!

Ladies – I have been coloring my hair for so many years I honestly don't even remember how I got started on it – but I DO know that I have probably tried every brand of hair color out there. My natural color was brown/brunette but I think I started going auburn back then because I was crazy for red hair. A couple of times I have gone full blown red and loved it but my favorite personality has been to be a blonde. After cultivating all the brands out there, I continually come to the conclusion that nothing works as good for me as L'Oreal's Superior Preference does. I vary my color choices and it's always some shade of blonde in the vast range that they make but I mostly stick with golden tones (more flattering for elderly skin they say). The thing is that it's such a pain to apply the color and then figure out what I can do during the 45 or so minutes that I have it on my roots. I usually only do my roots.  I also try to do it when my Harley husband isn't around.  Nothing says "I think I'm going to go take a nap." to my husband like seeing me walking around here with globs of goop on my head! Several hairdressers told me years ago that my hair would get too dry if I pulled the color through every time, so I seldom do that.

I went to Target this week and was thinking as I strolled by the hair color isle that it is time for a root touch up. Their L'Oreal Preference section had been sucked dry by blonde vampires so I was forced to look at other options. It was at that time, that I came across L'Oreal's NEW Excellence to Go 10 MinuteCream Colorant! I had observed this new product advertised on television but I was leery big time! I kept thinking, “Come On...no way can it be effective in 10 minutes!” However nothing else appealed to me so I put my hand around the box and told it flat out “You better be great because I am not having any bull---- color on my nice hair!” The package trembled. It knew it had better perform once I got it home.

Let me tell you that I did my computer research before this stuff ever touched my unflattering roots! There are 16 'captivating' shades to choose from – I chose Medium Golden Blonde 8G – it is very close to the shades I usually use. The 'to-go' colors run about $9.49-$9.99 a box which was a little bit more than I pay but the lure of 10 minutes was compelling. They have it at Target, Walgreens, Amazon.com, and drugstore.com for sure.

I did my usual preparations – covered the sink in plastic, covered the toilet in plastic, hung my 'rear-view' mirror on a hanger behind my head so I could see the back, got out my clips, my hair coloring brush with the long tail on it and put on some paint clothes and was ready to open the box! Inside the box are the basics, the color, the developer, the conditioner, the instructions and the all important rubber gloves! You might laugh that I put plastic bags or plastic around but believe you me, no matter HOW careful I am and precise – every single time I see a splotch of color on the door or on the wall or somewhere and that stuff STAINS big time so I just take care of it all before I start.

The fist thing I noticed is that it didn't STINK or cause me to feel as though I was choking on fumes! That was a pleasant surprise! It applied like a dream – I like to make my hair parts using the tail of my color brush, then squeeze a line of colorant along the part and then kind of brush it in with my long tailed coloring brush. There is a wonderful instructional video on the L'Oreal website that demonstrates EXACTLY how to use their new product which is really a great help if you have never colored your hair before! It shows you how to do just roots or how to color your entire head!

I read warnings that indicate that you don't want to leave it on more than 10 minutes because it WILL make your hair darker so as soon as my timer went off the color was being rinsed off within my gray crusty wash tubs in the basement! I liked the conditioner too – it also smelled pleasant and after I dried my hair I was happily surprised! I would use it again! Now to see just how long the color lasts! I will admit I LOVED that it only had to be on my head for 10 minutes! This would be great if you were in a hurry for a big event, date, etc.! Have any of you tried this product yet?

I leave you with the knowledge that if I were suddenly transported to Jamaica tonight and somebody put cornrows in my hair – there would not be ONE gray hair evident in any of those skin tight parts they would make on my head!  My roots look GOOD!Kiss

Do we have any other L'oreal Excellence to Go lovers or even better... tell us YOUR favorite hair coloring products and why you like them!

I stopped dying my hair years ago as I've found that even permanent colour washes out within just a few goes. But, I must say, that when I did I found that Loreal was the only brand which actually lasted past a few washes and didn't take so much maintenance.

... sanity is relative, insanity is quantum mechanics ...

I wouldn't ever dare colour my hair, since I'm sure it wouldn't be to my satisfaction. But I'll suggest my sister looks into this, if it comes in green. She is crazy for everything green. :)

I always die my hair and find that box colors are just as good as the high cost salon colors.

Color my hair?   I was BORN with a plastic applicator in one hand and a timer in the other.  There are two other 10 minute hair colors on the market (correct me if I am wrong and I am sure you will):  Herbal Essence and Clairol Perfect 10.  The latter promises to 100% cover gray.  It does not do so (I am not gray everywhere, but the gray I have is really tough to cover.)  Perfect 10 smells like the usual PPPPPPPPUUUUUU gunk.  Can't speak to Herbal Essence.  So I leave it on longer.  And my hair color is darker, but there is nothing worse (other than ending up with eggplant colored hair and I have done that too) than spending all the time and effort to color only to find the roots and ends look lovely and the grays continue to smirk at you.  I have tried Clairol's Grey Solutions, but every shade, regardless of the pretty color on the box comes out dark, dark brown.  So yeah for L'Oreal for joining the 10 minute market and doing it in a stink-free way.  I am going to email them and see what they suggest in terms of gray.  And I did color my hair right before a date.  Many, many years ago (my husband doesn't let me date).  The look on the guy's face when I answered the door is etched in my fading memory.

try blending in a few top highlights.the lighter color fades the gray away alot better than the standard dark hair dye. good luck!

I alternate between dying my hair at home and getting it done in a salon. I always feel like it ends up looking more natural when I get it done in a salon because they always add a couple highlights or lowlights to break up the solid color. When I do use drugstore dyes, I go for Herbal Essences (can't remember which one exactly).

karen726!  I LOL at your "I was BORN with a plastic applicator in one hand and a timer in the other!"  You and lucky_trio ARE SO right - it's very dangerous to attempt coloring your hair with any product you are unfamiliar with before a date! I have also had many BAD hair experiences in my years of using over the counter coloring products!  It's been a lot of experimentation to see what works and what really was a bad idea and what required 'skilled professionals' to correct!  You DO have to be careful and open minded to results other than what it shows on the box! That's why I just stick to doing my roots and go to a salon if I want an all over color - but that's just me!  I also liked that this product had a creamy texture and didn't run all over.

Thank you for the article. I don't know if I'm too lazy or what but I much prefer getting my hair done at the salon. It's a lot gentler on my hair as well.

i went through a phase of coloring my hair at home. i want my natural hair color back so im growing out all this mess. i was using clairol textures and tones since they feature african american women on the box and it's what my mom uses to color her locks. at the time i had natural hair so that was all the chemical i would do. now with this relaxer/texturizer, i'll trust color to pros only unless i do something gentle like a rinse.

I've been colouring my hair since I was 11 so I've gotten pretty skilled. My only huge miss was the Sun In disaster around age 15. I have certainly had some stains and messes though. I don't bother buying nice shower curtains because I know I'll ruin them.I haven't tried any of the 10-minute permanents colours. They don't seem to have a good shade selection and I'd be more worried about getting the timing just right when it's 10 minutes versus the usual around 45 minutes. I think it would be especially hard if you're new to colour or you're just trying to do your roots because it takes a while to apply the colour and it starts developing right away?

I have to color my grey roots every two weeks, so I can't afford salon color anymore, but I use professional color from the beauty supply store.  Does the ten minute color keep the grey covered even after several washings?

I used to color my hair at home, Clairol perfect 10 was one of my faves. I used to do this all the time to save money (compared to salon prices) I caved and I've had my hair done by the pros 2 times already and I love the quality of the dyes compared to the home color kits. However it is super expensive and you really have to trust your stylist (I would rather screw up my hair color and be mad at myself than be mad at a hairstlyist...I guess then I'd be mad at myself for going and spending so much dough on my hair...even when I KNOW you can make them redo it. I guess its a control issue or something I have haha) I really need to do something about my roots though, its pretty bad. Although it is very pampering and relaxing to have someone else do your hair!!

Thanks for the wonderful review Jeanisina, your hair always look great know matter what you do with it! I have natural dark hair but was thinking of putting something in it that would make it have a red tone to it. Just not sure what to use yet. I am tempted to book myself a appointment at the stylist but after all the bills that have come in from Christmas, think it may be better to do it on my own.

Jeanasina, My Lovely Lady that makes me smile! I was getting my hair done at the salon. $120 for color, cut, and style is a bit steep for me right now. I have jumped on the "Fredrick Fekkai" band wagon, my color of choice is Lucy 6R. It is a nice change from drugstore hair color. It comes with the bowl, hair color mix, deep condition mask (it lasts past 1 use, I got 3 uses out of it), gloves, and a long tail color brush with each box. It is $30 but compared to $120 I will take it! The color isn't my Celtic copper or warm Celtic copper I love from the salon but there isn't a $80 difference either, I will keep using the Fekkai until I am working my over time and then do a salon splurge. There is a product, I am having trouble thinking of the name, you can buy a 1 serving packet to add to your hair color, I think it is called "gray magic" it helps the hair color grab the gray and helps your color stick longer. It is especially good for red hair. If you look at my profile pics you'll see my kids, that is all natural, my hair was very similar to that color.

I frequently throw box color on my hair. I have almost jet black hair at the roots and then it fades into a dark brown naturally. If you bleach it, it just comes out this muddy color. They tell me I have brown undertones.Anyway, I prefer burgundy colors. On me since I don't bleach/strip first the darker shades of red and burgundy don't show as much. but when I get out in the sun it glows whatever color I put in. Most people never notice that I have a color unless I do highlights (or like I say if I'm outside in the sun). Which is fine for me. My grays are hard to work with. They are a wire-y texture and very shiny reflective gray. Sometimes they come out looking like a blond or pinkish highlight.I tend to prefer Loreal or Herbal Essences but I have used Natural Instincs and clairol. The clairol was good also. But we each have such different hair colors undertones and texture what works for one may not work for the others.Anything that smells better and takes less time is good I'd say.

I tried Fekkai haircolor too but didnt care much for it at all. You pretty much pay 30 bucks for haircolor, plastic brush and bowl... Results are very similar to those i got from a $2 Revlon color. I personally like henna colors better- I tried it a couple of times and my hair looked very natural, dark brown, with a healthy shine to it. I know many people think henna is evil and dyes your hair orange, etc.. But my experience with Moroccan Henna was great. I also dispute that henna color is permanent, I have used regular haircolor after henna and it worked just fine.As it is, I only color my hair twice per year and I stick to my natural shade :)

Hilarious review, Jeanasina!  I love your writing style!  I color my hair too, and I've been every shade in the book (including some funky ones in high school and college).  For a few years now, I've been going with a more natural look (the dye is nearly the same color as my hair, but it's always prettier/glossier/less dull when I dye it).  I've not tried the Excellence to Go, and I usually just stick to whatever I have a coupon for, but it seems worth a shot if it's that quick!  I too hate the waiting process while the dye is working its magic, but my least favorite part is the application.  I have long hair and I always dye my whole head, so my hair gets all tangled up in the process and it takes forEVER to do it.  I usually end up having to just pile my hair on top of my head, squirt the whole bottle on there, and hope for the best.  If L'Oreal comes up with a dye that's more like a spray-on or a giant vat that I can just dunk my head into, you let me know.

I color my hair at home too. I usually get my hubby to help me do it (he's the best). I never seem to use the same brand twice. I have yet to decide what color I like best on me so I try a new color every time. I realize this is super bad for my hair but I just can't seem to find the perfect color yet. When I do find a great color, I will be buying something like this so I can get it all done faster.

I'm an at home hair dying addict! My hair has been every color from blond to black and every color in between and a few random colors like hot pink and blue too :) Lately I've been sticking to reds and auburns. My biggest gripe about any brand that I can find is fading. I think that's an issue with any red though. My favorite brand lately has been Garnier 100% Color. I've had good results with it.

I colour my hair every week. Right now I'm using BAQ Jamila henna, but my favourite brand is Lush. I don't like their red henna, it's too orange, but Caca Noir is the best black henna I have tried. I don't want to go back to chemical dyes, but I'd love to dye my hair blue or purple. So I am debating Manic panic, I only want to find out as much as possible about it before I try it.

I gave up colouring my hair a few years ago, when I found out that my mother, who is a natural blonde like me, started to go grey at 31!  I figure I might as well enjoy my natural hair while I can as there will be plenty of time to play with colour all the rest of my life, lol.  The 10 minute thing sounds good though, when I used to dye I hated hanging out with gladwrap around my head too, lol!

i'm au natural this past year. First time in years (we don't meantion the blonde years). I stopped dying my hair at home as every brown dye gave me a wanna be goth tinge. Not a good look when i had waist length hair at the time, anyone say morticia. I tend to get reactions to hair dyes and spend the entire time fighting the itch. I do have 2 grey hairs, sob but that is what tweezers are for.

I color my hair at home and would love to try this stuff. Why color your hair if you don't have any gray. It is a lot of work.  I do have problems with it coloring all the gray. If anyone can tell me where to buy something that works to color all the gray I would love to use it. It is just so expensive to color your hair I was getting a cut hair color and highlights for 170 every 6-8 weeks. It was getting so expensive. I will have to say the salon color doesn't fade like the stuff you by in the box.  I always leave it on longer because I feel it will not fad as fast. I am also hoping it will color the gray. I was told next time just to color the roots. This way the highlight will last longer. at the temples it doesn't color the gray. If anyone can help please do.Thanks

I have had my hair professionally colored for as long as I can remember.  I recently bought a house and money is tight.  I am a dark brunette with caramel colored highlights professionally done.  I have no money to go to the salon, and so have been using semi-permanant color to blend in my roots.  I am not yet brave enough for permanant color, as I haven't done home color since college.  Maybe when I am brave enough I will check this stuff out.

I have colored my hair for so long I can't remember when I started and I have had some bad experiences. I remember this one time long ago I tried to dye my dark brown hair blonde at home oh it was sooo bad. my hair turned all kinds of colors some blonde, dark brown and even orange! It was awful!!! I threw my hair under a ball cap and off to the store I went for brown color. I never tried that again. I did try going black and could not get it to lighten up so I have had my share of bad experiences. I haven't dyed my hair in a long time though. I have used so many and not real sure what my fave would be. I loved the article and I got a few laughs out of it! Thanks!!

Great article Jeanasina!  I haven't coloured my hair for about three years as I have been wanting to get 'back to basics' and help nurture my hair into some natural good health - so far it seems to be working.  Previous to this, I used to use a semi-permanent colour in pretty close to my natural shade, to give my hair a bit of shine and vigour and pep it up a little.  Now I just use a leave in conditioner which isn't a turbo charged as the ones the include in at home dye sets (wonder what they put in those suckers?  I'm tempted sometimes to just buy the dye for the conditioner!!!) but it does the job.  I like the sounds of having a 10 minute dye within reach, though!  The less time with goop on my head the better!  :D

I tried a lot of brands, usually dark brown shades, and never had a problem - even with the cheap dyes. But I went blonde once and to achieve the color I wanted I had to bleach my hair repeatedly. This did damage my hair and I had to cut it short.

Jeana,I think you could work beauty-magic with a box of Crayolas and some duct tape? LOL! You simply make me choke with laughter at your descriptive-visuals. :)You have this down to a science girl! I would never take the time to "splatter proof" my bathroom unless I was hiding the evidence,HAHAHA! I have never colored my own hair although when I was young,I tried one of those "frosting" kits with very tragic results: orange streaks that looked very out of place "back then" but would now be TOTALLY okay! It's one thing I leave to the pros because my hair-color IS one of my personal best "accessories" and I'd hate to muck it up.I do think that having this and other top-quality and easy to use products available so all women can try to look and feel their nicest if huge and I applaud the company for continuing to evolve!

After a liftime of paying a lot of money to have my hair colored and highlighted, in a fit of boredom, I grabbed a few boxes (I have a lot of hair, one won't do the job) of Garnier in kind of black cherry, burgundy color, and took my blonde hair dark. I didn't do the greatest job, it's a little uneven, but overall the response to it has been really great. It gives a warmth to my pasty pale skin that it didn't have with blonde hair. Which is kind of odd, because my natural color actually is blonde! So now that I'm open to the diy hair color method, I'm really interested in hearing what products are good, which ones I should avoid, and this ones sounds like one I'll try. Thanks for the review! And Samantha Provost, your hair is absolutley gorgeous!! If I were you I would not change a thing! If you really want a change, maybe a few highlights would be the change you're looking for.

i frequently try drugstore brands; ive tried them all... but they always end up fading in a few weeks, and i need to redo it! i'd rather just get colored at the salon, and only have to go every few months

I don't dye my hair since I once used a bleach blonding kit in high school and wound up with banana yellow hair... I was called banana head for my entire freshman year of high school.  That scarred me a little bit :(  Luckily I like my natural blonde haircolor, and I'm lucky to have natural highlights and lowlights.  I am thinking about maybe getting some lighter highlights done, but I'd probably go to a salon since I don't trust myself anymore!
