TWEEZERMANS NO SLIP SKINCARE TOOL! MEGKEN AT HIS BEST!
Megken here - Growing up we all had that want for that little something that our friends had as a kid and our parents wouldn’t buy us. Envy, Number 6 of the seven deadly sins, I can’t shake even into adulthood. There were all those things I never got as a kid: Super-Elastic-Bubble-Plastic, Slip’n-Slide and that Evil Knievel motorcycle toy. Today I still think how much fun it would have been to own a Krazy-Kar. I hope someone will get smart and start producing one in an adult size.
Devo’s “Whip It” was on the radio, it was the early 80’s and the Rubik’s Cube was all the rage at my summer camp. I never wanted one, it was too frustrating. I was envious that my brother could solve a Rubik's Cube in less than 5 minutes. There's that Number 6 again!
Camp was where my first kiss took place, maybe a little more but pretty void of home-runs. I remember it like it was yesterday as our pubescent bunk of 12 kids unpacked their summer clothes and sundries into cubbies. When Eban, not Evan, a half Middle Easterner, quarter American and the rest Neanderthal unpacked his stuff we took notice.
Eban was larger than the rest of us kids and much hairier; he got hit with puberty ahead of all of us. He said he started shaving his mustache at age 8. I felt like the George to his Lenny. We weren’t friends until our late teens. As "Missing Link" unpacked his standard items on the list-flashlight, canteen the rest... All of the kids looked on. Excuse me for sounding a bit mean but I was much smaller than he was and he deserves this. He tried to give me swirlies, short-sheeted my bed and gave me a wedgie; writing this is sort of my revenge albeit, decades later.
The rest of the bunk was in awe when he started unpacking the things a bit more interesting, a large buck knife, rappelling rope and then the highlight, something he referred to a “zit-popper”. He held it up high with the pride of an actor winning an Oscar. The boys look on in amazement. Some laughed, others doubted the validity of the product’s claimed purpose. It was a little metal tool with tiny holes on either side, one smaller than the other. He said, “It’s like popsicle stick with holes in it.” I didn’t think it was anything like a popsicle stick.
I never came across the “zit-popper” in the almost 30 years since camp. It’s not like I feel comfortable asking for it in Save-On, nor would I know where to look. However, the other day at Nordstrom’s Rack, I saw that little piece of my envy-history that has lived within me from that first day of summer camp. Shocking enough it was not called a “zit-popper” it was called a “Tweezerman No Slip Skin Care Tool”.
More shocking it is not for zits but it’s a “Specialized skin care tools feature a thin angled loop to gently roll out white heads and a flat side to press out blackheads.” Aren’t white heads, umm zits? There it was in my hands…finally, my own “No Slip Skin Care Tool”. It’s not that fun a name but it is mine. I own it now in fact it was a gift from Meg! Thanks, Meg.
I washed my face with warm water and set forth on my extraction adventure. This is the first time I was actually hoping for blemishes and other abnormalities on my cheeks, forehead and beak. Like Harry Potter I use my own “No Slip Skin Care Tool” as a magic wand making blackheads vanish. I felt like a miner digging for coal, pulling out black heads from the deepest pores on my face. It was much more fun then when I tried the Elmer’s glue. The only suggestion I have for the Tweezerman “No Slip Skin Care Tool” is an even smaller opening. I like to get right in there to clear out even the smallest pours. They are sold out on the Tweezerman site so I guess lots of people are having fun with the DIY facial fun. I have had some amateur esthetician sessions where Meg performed extractions with the fingernail technique but I like this tool much better.
What are your ways to clear out those really deep clogged pours? Have you tried this Tweezerman “No Slip Skin Care Tool”? What beauty tips did you learn from camp? Anyone else with a hairy bunk mate?

I really want this now.

Like most people, I have heard over and over and over again about how BAD it is for your skin to pick and pop blemishes. But, like most people I completely ignore that sound warning when a big, itchy blackhead rears its ugly self on my face. This sounds quite disgustingly fascinating - thanks for the review, Megken! Great article. :D
Megken, I've never used that tool, but I do wholeheartedly understand your envy. In fact, I still might buy myself that EZ Bake Oven that I never received as a child. My parents had never given me one, and now I'm a terrible cook. (My mom only semi jokingly said I should try out for the Food Network show "Worst Chefs in America"). Ahhh what might have been...

Great article! I don't really get a lot of blackheads now, but I still think I'd like to get one of these. It would certainly keep me entertained on a Saturday night! ;-)
These days my Clarisonic keeps the brunt of my blackheads at bay, but this might be good for the really deep ones it can't seem to help! Definitely something I could see myself having fun with, thanks for the review! :)
My dad had one of those when I was a kid, and I had one myself at some point in my teens. I have to say, I think that they cause more damage to the skin than they cure. Give me a nice kaolin clay mask and a cleansing oil any day. I admit, I have to pick if I have a zit with a head on it, but despite that, I do agree it is best not to squeeze, even with a 'zit popper' :)

I agree: best to leave the popping tools alone. I use a cleansing oil, a BHA solution and retinol to keep my pores clean.
While I don't have issues with pimples, strange I know considering how insanely oily my skin is, I have blackhead issues quite often. I've never been one for picking at my face, but I have to say this sounds like fun XD
... sanity is relative, insanity is quantum mechanics ...
Of course I know about this delightful little gadget. Buyer beware, as great as it feels to remove all the nasties you have to be really careful because popping and picking can lead to even larger pores and bigger blackheads. Of course I don't take my own advice, but still. I'm telling you Megken you gotta try the Murad we just reviewed. Stylepapa and I couldn't get over the reduction in blackheads, etc.. Plus it's totally safe and noninvasive. Papa and I just love your reviews, it's so easy to picture everything you write about. As far as scars from childhood are concerned, I'm planning on adding a psychiatric fund to our daughter's college fund. I'm thinking something like 4-5 years of college and 2-3 years of therapy ought to just about cover their upbringing..... ;) Whadoyathink?
I'm too lazy to go looking for imperfections in my skin. I guess that's also because I've never really had many problems with my skin, except for adult acne!
a big ewwwwww!
I've had one for years. It's really useful but it's also something you don't want to approach lightly. If you've ever had problems with compulsive picking then this is not right for you.
My mum had one of those things when i was little, but I never understood how it worked. The tweezerman one looks like it'd be much more effective.

YES. Exactly. Picking at your face is bad and makes it worse, but it is such a bad habit that I can never stop doing. The immediate relief is so addicting, way more then a faster clear up. It's so not good. This thing sounds really interesting, I way to indulge bad habits and finding ways to make them healthy. I am so checking this out.
Let's all enjoy the Summer sunshine!
I have a very similar tool from Bodyshop, you just have to pull in a downwards motion and out come the blackhead or whitehead. Preferably it is done after a proper clay mask that helps the blackheads to the surface. The larger loop I really can't use, though. Wish there was one smaller than the small instead of the big one. And honestly? It isn't all that effective. Not as effective as it ought to be for the price.
i've never heard of a zit popper. it sounds scary though, i usually just leave my pimples or put pimple cream over it.
Definitely want to try one for the odd blackhead. Also, I'm debating if it'll work for some deep ingrown hairs on my legs. Worth a try.
I, too , knew Tweezerman made this product. I do have some blackheads on my nose, but I am afraid if I start attacking them too agreesively I am going to end up looking like I have leprosy. I am going to go get the Murad T-Zone.
this sounds like one of those products i need. I've only seen the black head remover, but i never figured out how to use them. this however, does sound fun lol i can spend ages picking at my face, terrible i know!

Tweezerman is top of the line for this stuff - even if you're dry and not prone to blackheads, after a hot bath, you can still get some gunk (technical term there) out of your pores with these. Not much, usually, but it's that little bit of stuff that's leaving your pores bigger. Follow with some good hydration and - pores magically shrink again.
I've tried some other ones, but the Tweezerman really is the one to go for.
You are such a treasure Megken! How would we ever know what a red-blooded male thinks about in terms of such things without your insight, wit, and yes even that touch of the "eeuuuuooowwww!" factor?I think this little tool has been around for a long time and maybe I even owned one at some point, glad it's "there" for those that want/need to use it.I prefer a gentle herbal-steaming and easy extraction via a soft cloth because I'd probably do myself and my face some serious damage with this little piece of wonder in my hands,LOL! Hands off, less is more when it comes to skin IMO but you have at it Darlin'! :) Camp: one of the horrors of my youth,LOL! I learned how to use chewing gun to create "cleavge"(the predecessor to the "Fashion Tape" widely used today, you jammed a wad of it into your training-bra and then stuck the side to the gum, thus creating a shallow-valley of sorts!) and also how to use cherry jello for lip and cheek stain...not a total waste of time, right? :)
MegKen, I am so grateful for your posts. I like having the male point of view. I can just see the hairy camp kid!! Too Funny. I never owned a "zit popper" AKA "skin care tool" but I use either philosophy micro-delivery peel or youthful essence microderm, y.e. comes with a microderm tool and a round brush tool too, they get everything pretty clean, a good mask also helps.
that tool scares me. i will not be using that. no thanks. id probably use it wrong and end up with acne scars (more than i already have).

I swear my orthodontist used to use something that looked just like that... O.o
If you want to cause serious damage... er, uh... fun...Sephora makes an extractor with a lance on one end and just the tiny hole on the other. It's about $20 and looks like hours of fun!
Ugh. I think this is what they used on me when I had my one and only facial. It was SO painful. Now when I get whiteheads, I just either leave them be, or pop them, depending on how bored I am.

i was just looking at these last week! how funny. I didnt end up buying because i thought ach how good can it be when my fingers wrapped in tissue work perfectly well. You know i just went for a facial at a college and they used 2 q-tips to squeeze.. i thought that was clever. i might get one of these just so i know if i like it or not.
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
This device kind of scares me....you know how eyelash curlers scare guys....this kinda reminds me of...pain!! Doesn't it hurt to pop those suckers??!
A dermatologist used something like this on me a long time ago while my eyes were squinted and tearing over. I always wondered what it was they used. Recently saw this same tool at Sephora and I've been coveting it ever since. Its on my list, soon at the top. Great review Megken!
Style may be on the surface, but you can be deep and still have some - Clarissa Gough
I have a nearly identical "zit popper" tool that I got from Sephora many years ago. I don't use it very often because I'm too lazy to dig around in my drawer to find it. It is pretty effective and causes a lot less irritation around the area of a blemish than it does when you use your fingers.
I have to admit, I LOVE popping zits. I can stand for hours in front of the mirror, looking for imperfections. Luckily, my hubby catches me before I do serious damage. I'm not even allowed to walk by those 5x magnification mirrors when shopping. As a recovering zit popper, I must stay away from this tool... it would be like kryptonite. So far, the Muad T-Zone Pore Refiner is doing a awesome job. I have also learned that I can't wear anything on my face with silicone.
i have one these.. by earth theraputics (or something like that.)they're alright... i like using my fingers better though (:more satisfying.
great product!

As a child i always wanted the much looked for cabbage patch but as a grown up--I want this!!!!! (i'm holding my breath and sticking out my lower lip). This looks like such a cool gadget and i could sincerely use it (esp this week bc my skin hates me this week).....congrats on getting your wish item now i'm hoping i'll get one also :)
As much as I would love one of these for the stubborn blackheads on my nose, I will never buy one. I would spend all of my free time in front of the mirror digging this little tool into my skin. I know it's wrong to pick but it is just so satisfying, when you get that gunk out of your skin. Yo can admit it. I won't tell a soul.

I've used this for whiteheads, but I've always been nervous to use them to extract blackheads, because I read if you do it wrong you can cause bruising.
I have a similar tool from tweezerman and love it. I try not to go nuts with it but when needed I use it and it works well.
http://blacknailpolishandlipgloss.blogspot.com/
i dont know if i would use this tool- i have large pores and my skin scars easily... i am afraid this tool, even if it sounds good, will in fact serve to aggravate pores and scar my face.
I have heard of this tool but I've never used one...it kinda does look like a dental instrument...I only get a PMS zit, once a month. One good scrape with my finger nail does the trick. Loved your post, it is very interesting~enlightning to read a mans point of view
I have this tool and it is easy to use. I just use it for occasional clogged pores since squeezing or using nails is so bad. It was really cheap and will get that bad stuff outta there. I got mine at Wal Mart right by the tweezers.
Thanks for the review! I need a new tweezer.
I have one of these! And I want so badly to be able to use it, but lately, I guess because I have really stepped up my skin care routine, I have nothing to use it on! How sad is it that I actually want zits so that I can have the fun of removing them? It's kind of like when I remove the biore strip and it's pretty clean, I should be thrilled, but I'm always oddly disappointed. In any case, as always, your review was very entertaining!
I tried the paperclip trick....OUCH! Never again!
Oh, I love these things! My only issue is that the smaller wire loop bent and then broke on my first tool...but that might just have been from overuse... *blushes* haha
Don't feel bad, I broke one too! It was a Sephora brand and I promptly took it back because I couldn't live without it. They looked at me in amazement because it was made of stainless steel. I guess my face can destroy stainless steel? lol. I try not to use them too often because they leave red marks on my pale skin. I may have to buy a second one to keep in my travel kit and I think it will be a Tweezerman.
shaved his mustache at 8? holy chromagnonman! great review as always.
look great i will look in to this
I like most know it is bad to pop and pick at your face but I just can't seem not to. It is a bad habit and hopefully one day I won't have any ips to pop (wishful thinking here). I doubt I would actually buy something like this but it was a great article. Thanks!
My fingernails would be my best tool :) Think the dermatologist I go to uses something similar on me... but I still prefer my nails. Bad for my skin I know, but I can't help it :(
Got two teenage goddaughters this and they really like it so they use it. It was a great stocking stuffer and it generated a quick thank you note.
