A HAIRCOLORIST'S PERSPECTIVE ON HAIR LOSS! MARCO PELUSI SPECIAL OFFER!
Our friend Marco from the Marco Pelusi Hair Studio, Inc. As a colorist, I notice clients over the years (both men and women both) experience different changes with the structure and strength of their hair - one of which is forms of hair loss. Hair loss can be caused for a number of reasons. If it's become a real problem for you, the very best thing - the single most important thing to do - is to set an appointment with a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss in your vicinity. Should you need a recommendation from my studio for an L.A. derm, email us at www.marcopelusi.com. As a colorist, I know that sometimes too much color, overprocessing, overblonding, and other repeated chemical treatments such as relaxers can cause some hair loss. The need for strengthening with protein - and collagen (available in Marco product) is extremely important in this situation, as over time, you can actually rebuild some of your hair's strength with protein. I have a reconstructor which works miraculously to accomplish this purpose. Also, moisturizing conditioners are necessary to compliment the protein as well.
Secondly, hair breakage during or after pregnancy - and how the texture can completely change - is often a concern. Often times pregnant women experience hair loss as well. There are differing doctors' opinions. Of course I recommend you to connect with your physician to see what he/she says, but generally, I recommend to nurse your hair as much as possible, avoid heavy heat styling, and simply give in and try to adjust and work with what you have. Give it time - I have seen women's hair return to normal when the baby is born. I also have seen womens' hair change a bit even after the birth. Just give it time!
Finally, thyroid problems can cause hair loss and weakness; and replacement of thryoid hormone can often replenish hair growth. Ask for a complete thyroid panel at your next doctor's blood test if you're losing unusual amounts of hair. Just be sure. There are also other hormonal issues which an endocrinologist can check for you. If you don't like what your general practitioner says to you, get an endocrinologist. To summarize, generally speaking, it is best to get a total check from a dermatologist to ascertain your scalp and growth patterns, as well as your physician's expert opinion, and of course, smart suggestions from your hairdresser who knows your hair. The moral of this story is to become your own physician; your own supporter of your own health - including your hair's health. No one else will step up and do it for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the right people - the folks who are informed and educated. Become your best advocate, especially when dealing with your precious head of hair! If you have any further product usage questions, please feel free to connect with us. Happy holidays! Be good to yourselves!

thanks marco! Im starting to notice im not as full and thick as I used to be :( and I have that wierd bald spot/ cowlick thing too. Lol But I didnt know about the protein helping actually rebuild the existing hair. IM going to have to try your reconstructor. I have 8 years of harsh coloring and 8 years of product abuse under my belt so its time I started working backwards If I want my hair to survive any longer! But i CANT quit dying it! I just cant!

This was REALLY informative! Thank you so much =)
Thanks for the tips! I've been noticing my hair thinning over the past couple years. I've had the thyroid test from my dr. and it came back normal. I am just blaming it on poor diet and constantly dying my hair, as I hardly ever use heat styling of any kind. I didn't know protein was useful in growing healthier/stronger hair.

I think stress and genetic factors may also play a role in hair loss. I have a cousin who's 22 and has gray and thinning hair. poor cousin. I'd definitely recommend protein for her to see if it helps.
:O i'm forwarding this to my dad!he's in his early 50s and he's been suffering from minor hair loss in the past few years, my dad is a masculine man, full of ego, but he is actually really self conscious about his hair loss! it's only a little spot in the middle, he's still got plenty of hair.. but still!

Thanks for the tip about protein. I didn't know about that. I will definitely look for it next time I buy a hairproduct.
i think there's a 50/50 or 60/50 spread between heredity and diet. some great tips! i'll keep that in mind to prepare for my hubby before he looses all his hair :P
my boyfs loosing a little hair.. he has some special shampoo for it, will have to have a peek next time im in the shower and see what is in it. Hi dad still has a full head of hair though

Love Jadeee :D
i think im doing pretty well. i don't feel any different lately (:i've just PMS-ing a little.
There was a time when I was shedding hair like crazy! I realized I lacked vitamins and I forgot to take my daily supplement. I went back to taking them and the shedding subsided.
THanks so much for the article. It was readdy interesting. I think I'm too young to be losing hair:) But it was still helpful.
I'm waay to young to be losing hair lol. I wouldnt mind losing a little though - I have a looot of it, and I constantly get a bunch of layers to make it seem thinner.
My sister had a very traumatic experience years ago, lost a lot of hair and has had thin, fine hair ever since. Before that, she had perfect spiral curls, and her hair was fine, but she had a lot of it. It's been over 10 years, and she still has thin hair. Her hairdresser told her that your hair changes texture every 7 years, but hers never has. I might get her some protein treatments and see if they help.
Thanks for the advice Marco! I've been noticing some hair loss recently while brushing so I'm trying to be more careful with my hair to avoid going bald. :P
I'm still looking for a more moisturizing conditioner to help make my hair stronger.
Oh Marco, what a great and very informative post! I haven't experienced hair loss personally, but I know there are a lot of ladies who read this who will be so pleased there's something that can be done for it. ♥
I have some hair loss due to a thyroid issue and am wondering if there are any protein rich products that do not contain sulfates or silicones...i'm having a hard time finding them!I do not use sulfates or silicones on my hair and have been trying to really pay more attention to what i'm using on it. I have a saloon hair dryer (that you sit under--long story) so i'm all set to do a really intense treatment--just need to find the right one to do--anyone?????
Hi! I'm Marco Pelusi's administrator, Lisa. Marco recently launched a Collagen Hair Reconstructor, also known as his Foam Deep Conditioner. It will reconstruct and rebuild your hair. There are no sulfates or silicones. Since you have a salon hair dryer you can sit up to 30 minutes under it with the foam on, then cool down for 5 minutes and rinse it out. Follow with Marco's hydrate conditioner for a fantastic finish! Please fee free to call us at the Studio (310) 967-0999. Would love to help!!
I'm not experiencing hair loss, but am glad this was posted because plenty of women DO experience it, but it's so, so seldom talked about. Thanks for looking out for us ladies, Marco!
I love my hair, and I'm actually scared to get pregnant because of all the stories I've heard regarding hair loss and change in texture. Although I am nowhere even close to having my own babies but maybe one day I will. I haven't noticed any changes with getting older but I do color my hair regularly so maybe I should give my hair a break!!
I've read that in some cases, the pregnancy hormones cause hair to grow in thicker and when the pregnancy is over and the hormones go back to 'normal' the extra hair growth stops and falls out. So you aren't really losing anything that you had before you got pregnant, just your gains from during the pregnancy.
Great post. I am not experiencing any hair loss.

Hear! Hear! Marco! Well said. Is it wrong that I love you even though we've never met? Your leave in conditioner is ahhh-maaaaz-ing! I had an ungodly amount of hair loss after both my daughters were born. Luckily, everything went back to normal. Years later I noticed a little thinning again but was able to resolve the problem by switching my routine around and paying more attention to the health of my scalp. In fact, my hair is now thicker than it has ever been. A healthy scalp always means better hair. Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to consult the Meg Heads, we really appreciate you and your expert, loving opinions! Much Love! Dawn
Oh my god my hair is so thin and i'm sooo afraid about to be pregnant because i don't want to have hair loss !!!
Diamond are Girl Best Friend !!!
I don't have any hair loss and I really never thought about how much of a problem it is. I guess I need to start taking really great care of my hair now. I still have to dye it though...I just can' go without.

i have really thick hair and seem to lose loads of hair every day. it gets EVERYWHERE! and clogs the hoover. after giving birth to my kids, it fell out so badly. but there isn't any less of it!
I had significant hair loss while on some medication a few years ago. Before then I had always had massive amounts of really long/thick hair. Went on the meds for a month and BAM- half my hair fell out, and what remained was super thin and brittle. I discontinued the meds and switched to Nioxin hair products, based on the recommendation of my best friend (she's a stylist). Right away it started growing back at it's usual thickness and extremely quickly. I did have to wait out a mullet phase as it grew in, even though I made sure to get frequent cuts. It took about a year for it to get all back to the same length, and it's finally back to the state it was before it all happened- ridiculously thick and down to my waist. I definitely don't take my hair for granted anymore, that's for sure!
I think this is a subject that is hard from women to approach because hair is such a part of our femininity. My son's teacher was undergoing Chemo last year and lost her hair, it broke my heart so much. She has it back now-Yay! And is doing much better!I know pregnancy does bizarre things to you. I my hair got really thick and curly (it was slightly wavy in the back prior) but now my hair has a mind of its own going this way and that. I seriously need a cut now that I think about it teeheeSo... My question is.... Does this work with Men who are getting a bit thin due to genetics?
I've noticed a bit of thinning in my hair over the years. As a teen I had tons of hair. Though I've still got quite a bit, my pony holders loop more now than ever. I suspect hormonal changes and over coloring.
i used to have THICK, curly hair. it is not medium-thin, frizzy, and lost alot of its curl. :( i blame heat styling & 8 years of highlights / hair dye.

Thanks for the informative post! I haven't experienced any hair loss - I'm still young - but my dad does have a huge issue with it. I printed this article and plan on showing it to him next time I see him! Thanks again, and happy holidays!
xoxo
Surprisingly, I had no idea that the dermatologist would be the one you'd want to talk to about hair loss! Although I am young, I have a ton of trouble with hair loss. And of course I do take the blame, for I've dyed my hair almost every colour possible, but its becoming a huge issue since ive stopped. I had no idea about protein use to strengthen the hair, definitely something ill be looking in to!
As a cosmetology student we get alot of that coming through our salon and they wonder where their hair is going and why! You can't just put chemicals on your hair and expect it to be healthy! You're messing with your hair ph level everytime you use anything on it, did any one know that even the shampoos and conditions reset your ph level? They're more alkaline based. That's why I completely agree with Marco, you need to get protein on your hair! I'm very fond of Keritin Mist and Silk Infusion both by CHI.
