Neti Pots!

HEADLINE:  Neti Pot, flushes mucus to clear airways Megken here -  Welcome to Manly Mondays. Next week, is my official start where I will be reviewing a beauty product for men. Today, I wanted to share something trippy. I like to collect weird things.  I especially like the seemingly bizarre items for my health. I am constantly checking out alternative products.  I noticed the Neti Pot in my local Whole Foods and thought, "What is that thing? It looks like a white version of Aladdin's Magic Lamp?"   Then I studied closer. "You put it in where?" -- "SERIOUSLY? NO WAY! PASS!"

I didn't take it with me to the check-out counter. When I have cold and allergies, I notice that when I go surfing my sinuses always get cleared. I thought it had something to do with the salt water getting in my nose and washing it out. After learning about the Neti Pot I was correct, only this way you can have the same clearing effect without the risk of a shark attack.

A few months back Meg and I were at the Natural Products Expo Show, maybe you recall when she forgot her lady napkins and the Diva Cup came to the rescue! At the show they had a few Neti pots on special because it was the last day. I couldn't resist a deal even if I may not love using it, because for me it was worth the few bucks as a conversation piece.  Unfortunately, they only make one size, if you have ever seen my nose, I was hoping for an extra large.

The Himalayan Institute had a woman demonstrating it.  She would pour water in one nostril and it comes out the other. Of course I knew if you laugh hard enough when you drink milk it comes out your nose, so physiologically it was not a surprise to me.  With a little research I found this was originally practiced by yogis because "breathing plays a big part of yoga". Funny, because "breathing plays a big part in allowing Megken to live".

It was weird enough for me to be fascinated and it looked kinda fun almost like a magic trick so I had to buy a ceramic one.  She wanted me to try it right there, but I was a bit shy and didn't want anyone to find out what living creatures maybe flushed out.

Millions of Americans are dealing with sinus problems. Headaches, Sinus pain, allergies and breathing problems are all very common. I guess Oprah beat Megken to this story and she got it onto the counters on millions of bathrooms as another health maintenance tool you keep next to your toothbrush. OK, don't get me wrong, there is an art to flushing your nostrils.  You have to keep your face forward and don't breath it in through your nose, don't laugh and don't try to speak. It may drip into your throat.  It just takes some practice. Watch the video instructions. You may also want to video tape your spouse, partner or child doing it for the first time, it makes interesting fodder for youtube.

Make sure you use the proper type and amount of salt and water that is either distilled or previously boiled (mixed reports on this but having the cleanest H2O possible won't hurt) and keep the water about body temperature not cooler and not much warmer.  Make sure you clear out the water from your nose when you are finished.  There are so many ways to do this but most involve just blowing your nose... There are several Neti Pots out there in the market place.  The metal one, plastic white one, the plastic blue one, the ceramic white one, the squeeze bottle kind and there are some do it yourself ones.

What kinda Neti pots do you use?  Do you find that it works and did it change your life for the better and how? What does Dr. Stylepapa think from a medical stand-point?

Would you try it if you haven't? Does anyone use a turkey-baster?  What tips can you share with me about the Neti pot?

my friend uses some sort of Chinese herbs in her neti pot!  Her doctor recommended them since she cannot tolerate allergy pills or penicillin.  I thought they ALL came with herbs!

This product has helped many people I know. It kills infection and germs deep in the sinus where the antibiotics can't reach. My brother in law had a bad sore throat and it would not go away. He had rounds of anti biotics and was going to journey to the ocean to let the salt water wash into his throat. I suggested a neti pot and with in 2 days the month long battle w/ a sore throat was GONE. Neti Pot works wonders!!

I have been using SinuCleanse for quite a while now.  This was recommended by a friend who was having so many sinus infections that he almost had surgery--until he found SinuCleanse.  You buy the pot and the packets of solution and it works wonders.  My friend has not had any problems since and I have gotten great relief from using SinuCleanse.  The procedure is a bit ackward and I sometimes end up with water all down the front of me, but the results are worth it.  It's not pretty or dainty, but the darn thing works!!

I hear ya!  I'm another devotee' of the Neti Pot.  I think it's pretty disgusting in theory (and well, yeah, in practice too) so I try not to think too much about it.  But it works like a charm.  I think it really is Aladdin's lamp, updated for modern use.  I use a white plastic one that I bought at Walgreens.  I recommend it to anyone with sinus problems, post nasal drip (YUK), congestion, etc.  Great review, Ken!

My husband has severe sinus problems and at his last visit to the ENT we asked about the Neti pots.  His doctor said that they work but are very messy.  He recommended NeilMed Sinus Rinse regular bottle.  This worked fairly well but Jay found using it while showering really helped with the mess.  When Jay ran out of the little salt packets, we made our own with non iodized salt, one drop of tea tree oil and distilled water.  This method has worked the best and the results lasted longer. He still uses saline, like Ocean, a few times every day.  A good friend of mine who is a MD said that most sinus infections are yeast infections, so taking antibiotics will not help.  There is anti-fungals out now that you can spray up your nose."An interesting study reported in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings supports this thought.1 The report in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings noted that previously "fungus allergy was thought to be involved in less than 10 percent of cases... our studies indicate, in fact, fungus is likely the cause of nearly all of these problems and that it is not an allergic reaction but an immune reaction."1 In the study, researchers found that most people with chronic sinus infections had fungal growth in their sinuses. This research is interesting because more and more studies are showing that treating chronic sinusitis with antibiotics doesn't really do much and that shorter courses of treatment work just as well as the long courses. I find that conservative treatments (e.g., nasal rinses) are more effective than antibiotics for chronic sinusitis—but of course not enough by themselves."

Only on Meg's,LOL! I have tried a nettipot and honestly can't usually stop laughing long enough to do it right,LOL!It does really seem to soothe and work and I have seen that you really suffer with allergies Darlin' Megken so I'm glad it's effective for you.I find a steaming bowl of water with rosemary and a towel draped over my head does a "better" job for me as well as giving me a skin-benfit as well...yep,my nose runs like crazy when I do this as well and I laugh. :)I think it's an excellent product if you can use it.

Be prepared, when Stylepapa gets home from work he is going to have a Neti Pot orgasm telling y'all how much he loves this thing!  I must admit, I'm just as impressed as he is.  About two years ago I had such a severe allergy attack, nothing would help, but this did!  I works so well and is so effective that on those oh **** the alarm didn't go off days, I chose the Neti  over my makeup. That's a big deal for me, even though I don't wear tons of makeup I always have on something. Another cool feature, post Neti use, my complexion, the whites of my eyes and the overall look of my face is more even, brighter, less red and dare I say, a tad bit glow-y. It's very refreshing and uplifting.  Who knew snot drainage could have such a positive impact on health and beauty?  I would strongly suggest using pharmaceutical grade salt, IMO, it can make the difference between optimal results and total disappointment.  SP and I use the metal version, it's easier to clean and just seems more sterile, and of course, absolutely no sharing, get your own!  Engraving optional......

This is the greatest product since sliced bread.  I have suffered for years with sinisitis and this has practically changed my life.  It is very easy to use and when you do it for a while you really do get used to having water in your nose and it is not uncomfortable.  The results are nothing short of miraculous.  Especially with the flu season coming up and with lots of holiday flying, this is a must.  I do this in the morning and evening and it has kept me from getting sick on many occasions! Try this and you won't be sorry.  It' s lifesaver!!!!!

We at the Jeanasina House of Nasal Dilemmas are totally on board with the Neti pot!  When a girlfriend of mine first told me about this practice about 20 years ago I was totally grossed out and couldn't say 'Ewwwww" enough!  Then about three years ago I was at my son's house for dinner and I am hugely allergic to his cats.  I was miserable and my boyfriend at the time was sick with an awful cold so between us we were barely breathing.  My son whipped out his Neti pot and told us how it gives him immediately miraculous relief from his allergies etc.  While he was demonstrating it I paled visibly while my boyfriend eagerly said "Can I try it NOW?"  As soon as my boyfriend used it he said "WOW!!!!"  He wanted to know where he could buy one.  I didn't have the guts to try it for about a month until I got a horrible cold too and breathing became a struggle. I put on my red badge of courage and made the salt solution and bent over the sink and after a few inaccurate leanings of my head over the sink, I got it and I LOVED the results!  I was now saying 'WOW!!!"  We own two Neti pots (his and hers) and they really are so amazing in how they help with allergies and freeing up your nostrils so they are breathing clearly!  I know it sounds kinda scary and yukky but take my word for it - once you do it you'll be realizing it makes a such a positive difference! We purchased Ancient Secrets Nasal Cleansing Pots at the co-op and this brand/style is also sold on Amazon.com. If you look at Amazon you will see that there are 100 customer reviews on this particular pot - many MANY happy people use it!Thanks Megken for bringing up a really great product that definitely WORKS magic on your nasal passages!

I adore mine.  Everyone I know with sinus problems that has tried it says it has changed their life.  Unfortunately I have the opposite problem from Megken (tiny tiny nose).  This means the only one I can use is the tacky blue plastic one available at drugstores because it is designed for suction, which doesn't happen for me, but because of that the hole from which the water comes is actually small enough to fit in my nose. I also really recommend buying the saline solution packets, it works much better than mixing with your own sea salt, and insures you have the right concentration every time.  My Yoga Sensai recommended them to me, and I am eternally grateful.

Love and Lipgloss,
Kathryn

When I first saw the title of this post, I couldn't believe my eyes!  My parents both have one of these "neti pots"...both of my parents swear by them!  They have cleaner fresher sinuses, and they both can breathe through their noses.  During the dry winter months this neti-pot helps keep their noses feeling moist and snuffle-free.I don't have any sinus issues....I'm good.  But both parents keep insisting that I get one...I have a feeling this girl is going to get a neti-pot in her christmas stocking!!

Ok, so yes it is a little weird at first and takes some getting used to, but after the first several times it is really easy and doesn't feel weird. Best of all, it works SO well! My best advice? Use water that is at room temp (or slightly warm) and USE IT IN THE SHOWER! That way there is very little mess and you already have the steam going with helps. Best of luck to those trying it for the first time - it really is worth it to give it a shot!

Funny, because "breathing plays a big part in allowing Megken to live".That is too funny!  I have no need of it since I had my adnoids out as a kid, but friends of mine who are pretty wild partiers swear by this as away to prevent nasal inflamation.

The Neti Pot changed my life.I had horrible deep dark circles under my eyes for months.  I thought it was because I wasn't sleeping enough.  But no amount of rest, or eye creams reduced the circles.  A friend of my moms is an allergist (the most attractive allergist you've ever seen).  She noticed my dark circles too and told me they were from allergies in my upper sinuses that were making my face swollen.   She prescribed me some very expensive allergy medications and bought me a Neti Pot.The Neti Pot feels very awkward to use at first - you literally use it to force large volumes of water up your one nostril, into your sinuses, and out of the other nostril - but you get used to this feeling after a few times.  All of that water flow through my sinus area washed away the allergens that were trapped in there thus causing my eyes and face to swell and look darker.  After a few weeks of using the Neti Pot, the dark circles went almost completely away.  If I use it consistently, I don't even need to use medications.I think the Neti Pot should be as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth.  We breath in so many pollutants all day that get stuck in the sinus area, and it feels so good to gently wash them away.  xoxo Neti Pot I love you.

Viridian and Is820, the funny thing is you never really feel that horrible "water up your nose" feeling.  It's a totally unique sensation.  A bit awkward at first, but not at all uncomfortable.  Sunboy1, you gotta try the one SP and I use and don't forget to get the special salt that comes with it.  :)

LOVE NETI!!!I am a yoga teacher with chronic sinus issues... and I smoke. I always get sick, try decongestants, don't get better, try jala neti, get better.  It has never failed to work for me. It takes some getting used to, but it really is super fantastic. I have a big stainless steel pot that I put through the dishwasher after every use. My only tip is: Don't blow your nose too hard after use. Exhale gently through the nostrils many times.

I must admit that I did get a little excited when I saw your post Megken.  I didn't quite have the response Stylemama says I would have (see above), but I was close.  I first learned about this Neti Pot craze when Stylemama had me watch an episode of Oprah where Dr. Oz was promoting this.  A lot of my patients listen to Dr. Oz and then ask me a lot of questions, so I try to stay up-to-date with the info that goes out to the public, like this one.  I thought the whole Neti Pot deal was weird.  But my allergies are bad, and medication alone didn't do the trick.  So I thought I would give it a try.  I purchased a stainless steel version on-line which is great.  I have had it for at least two years.  And no matter how big and large your blow hole is, the tapered end forms a perfect seal.  I prefer it over the classic Neti Pot styles.  I have tried them and they don't work as well, don't hold as much water, and are a little messy.  TRY USING A NETI POT!  THIS REALLY WORKS!  But it isn't for the lazy.  It takes several minutes to complete the process so sometimes I don't do it; but then I pay the price.  A few key things to remember.  After filling the neti pot with warm water and mixing in the special salt, you must poor some of the water out of the spout to "primer" it.  Water up the nose without mixed in salt is an awful feeling.  At the end I recommend NOT blowing your nose.  You should drain your nose (face towards ground and breathing out both nostrils gently to let the water drain out).  Otherwise your nose can get clogged and you can end up sending water into tubes that are supposed to drain your middle ear.  And I don't recommend using this if you have a sinus, viral, or bacterial infection.  For some people their infection becomes worse.   For many people, antihistamines, decongestants, and steroid nasal sprays can work well for their allergies and sinus problems.  However, using a Neti Pot can replace some of these or at least improve your problem.  Where do I go when having an acute allergy attack?  NETI POT to the RESCUE!

I have terrible sinues, and years ago was over-prescribed anti-biotics for chronic infections, to the point where my current doctor won't prescribe them for my run-of the-mill sinus infections. One of his nurses told me to try this, and it has changed my life! No more sinus headaches, I haven't had a sinus infection in years, and I can breathe freely even in the worst of the allergy seasons.

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS!!!!  So we were at my friend's house last night, David and Debra and we were talking about my Neti Pot post and David confessed that he uses Williams-Sonoma Cow Creamer as his NETI POT!!!!!  See photo: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/d233/    I wish I had a photo of David with the creamer cow in his nose!   It seems like a few of you fear the feeling of water going up your nose, but it is better than not breathing, headaches, sinus pain, and every thing else that goes along with horrible allergies. Just a few minutes of water flowing through the nasal passages... to give you relief.     If i wanted to make a Neti Pot in the shape of an animal what should it be?

Megken, you crack me up.  I find breathing to be important in my life as well.  Whenever I felt stuffy, I always snorted salt water.  I've heard of these and they seem much easier than intentionally inhaling salt water - much less traumatic.  I want an engraved Neti pot like stylemama.  ;)  If it can make my skin glow and my eyes brighter, I'm game to give it a try.

I've heard of people that really love them.  But, I just can't bring myself to try it, not that I really need it.  If I do though, I use a saliine nasal spray.

Ooohhh...I can't even deal with swimming because I hate water up my nose, BUT I do have major sinus problems and just got an order from the DR. for a CAT scan of my sinuses, so after reading all the praises of the water up the nose, I think I will try it.
