JULIE HEWITT LIP BALM IN CAMELLIA ROSE!
Tantejoan here! If there is one product that unites women the world over, I’d venture to guess it is lip balm. Whether a woman wears makeup or not, chances are that the need to soothe chapped or distressed lips will make her reach for some product bring relief. Far back in history the earliest lip treatment was made of [WARNING! The delicate of stomach might want to skip down to the next sentence] ear wax!
No fooling. Another early remedy for crack, peeling lips? Beef and mutton tallow. Gee, I’ll bet grateful women must have carried the inventor of Chapstick through the streets.
So what is lip balm? The soothing salve is a form of topical ointment applied to the lips of the mouth to relieve chapping or dryness, and relief from cold sores. Lip-gloss is similar in application and use, but generally lacks any remedial qualities; it is purely cosmetic. Thankfully no longer composed of waxy body byproducts, balm is made nowadays from beeswax, petroleum jelly, menthol, camphor, scented oils, and various other ingredients, including vitamins, alum, salicylic acid, or aspirin. Some lip balms also contain octinoxate, avobenzone, or other SPF sunscreens to protect against sun damage.
While the primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure, the act of applying lip balm has become so common that some people believe we have become a nation addicted to balming. We apply it on average 5 to 15 times a day, often in a manner so automatic that we are hardly aware we are doing it. But lip balm serves a real purpose. Dry air, cold temperatures and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin, and thus they are often the first to present signs of dryness. Occlusive materials like waxes and petroleum jelly prevent moisture loss and maintain lip comfort while additional ingredients such as flavorings, color, sunscreens and medicaments add to the pleasurable experience.
Julie Hewett, the make up artist and cosmetic entrepreneur, has perhaps taken the concept of lip balm and elevated it from simple soother to the ideal expression of lip comfort. Her Camellia Rose and Ruby Balms come in sweet little pots and also in a stick formula. A blend of essential oils of rose, Camellia, and orange the balms heal chapped, peeling lips and the skin surrounding parched lips. It can also be used to nourish cuticles and other areas roughened and in need of this special treat.
Camellia oil is closest to human skin oil, so it’s no wonder the merest slick of it on tender or abused areas will bring immediate results. According to the web site, this yummy oil has been used as a beauty remedy for centuries in Ancient China. High in vitamins A, B, D & E, and made of 85% Oleic acid (which is closest to your skin's natural oils), this magic little pot has limitless benefits: gives skin a radiant glow, promotes healing of scars and imperfections, & contains natural UVA protection and anti-oxidants. Plus is 100% organic and parabens-free.
I’m so sold on this product I keep one pot on my bedside table, one in my purse and another on my office desk. I’d say I’m a True Believer. How about you?

100% organic, oh my gosh i think i'm in love! i'm a big green head!i'm a sucker for lip balms, especially in a pot, i love green chi Tuesdays! reading these makes me smile :)i've got several balms in my bag and i'm always trying to finish one so i can move onto the next, my nivea and avon balms always manage to dry my lips out, leaving scabs of half peeled dried up skin on my lips :(... this product however, looks and sounds amazing, i am sold by just reading this!

looks like a pretty color
wow! love this shade... the thing about the jar on the right, is that I find it kinda unsanitary? But yet, they're the easiest kind to put on..
love the color but i dont have one yet.. mmm I love lip balm though, esp tinted ones and i LOVE that coral color! I thought jojoba oil was the closest to our sebum? Oh well I will have to research that because i love oils. Thanks for the info :)
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
This balm looks like such a lovely color but the website says it's "natural-see through." I don't personally care about that becuase if it's a good balm and keeps my lips soft I will love it. I do think that $20 for a lip balm may be a little out of my price range though (I have to say that in case my hubby reads this...lol).
Way too funny, I choked on my drink...ear wax. Hey, come to think of it, I think the guy next to me in high school English Lit. class was still practicing that method. :-) These lip balms sound so amazing. I took a look at their website and they have some great products. Nice review!
Meg sent me this product as part of my giftpack (thanks, Meg!)The scent is strongly orangey (bitter orange not sweet)--I don't really know what Camellias smell like though. The color is actually VERY SHEER with very very very fine shimmer. The texture is thick in the tub but feels slick and thin on lips. It is decently moisturizing, but I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable slathering it on my hands the same way I would with rose balm.

Thanks for the history lesson on balm. I had no clue they used such primitive things back then for their lips. Especially when they were kind of icky. These look so cute and I love that the color is sheer. The Chinese really seem to know their stuff. The stick is more my type. I hate using a brush or my finger to apply a product. At $14, that's not a bad price but it's something that will have to go on my wish list until after the holidays. Who knows, maybe I'll find it in my stocking.
I must use up at least SOME of my lip balms before buying any more. I keep telling myself this. But I am tempted... And BTW, thanks so much for providing a use for ear wax. I wonder if Martha Stewart knows about this. A great project for home-made holiday gifts... LOL! Seriously, great review. Hope to use up a balm soon!

Never heard of this until now but it sounds fanstatic, may have to try this for sure since I am a lip gloss/balm/stick fiend ;)
I've never tried this, but I love that you gave us some educationon the origins of lip balm ;)

This is one brand I have not tried yet, but it's on my ever-growing list. I completely agree that lip balm is the one product almost everyone has in common. Whether you are a total product junkie like me, or someone who does the bare minimum, it's very likely a product you have around.
This is another one of the balms on my long list of balms to try. I've heard so many people say how much they love this one, I have to get one.

I once read that applying chapstick or lip balm more than 3-4 times a day actually dries them out more!!!! because then your lips get addicted and you need more and more to keep them happy! Not sure if its true or not, but i usually apply 5-6 times a day! ive got little tubes stashed everywhere!

This looks like a great product and I love the fact that it comes in a stick as well. I find that the pots can get a bit messy when it comes to application. I think that the ingredient list to this product is great, and I also love that its free from animal testing.
Earwax on your lips? Eww.... I love colored lip balms... all the benefits of lip balm, but pretty, too!
i've never heard anything about camellia oil before, but thanks for the information. it sounds like this stuff should be in everything! it seems like a lot of ladies here that have tried out the line are liking it so far so that's good to know.

I got a pot of this in my last package from Meg and it's great! I have another Julie Hewett palette I like a lot too, I really need to get more of her stuff!
I don't think I'd do much kissing with earwax on my lips, but I definitely would with this stuff. It's fantastic! I received this in my gift package from Meg. It's tinted a delicate pink in the pot and has a bit of shimmer to it and smells like oranges. In texture, it's less of a stick balm and more of a solid oil if that makes sense. It's very emollient and it makes my lips feel very moisturized and petal soft. I like it so much more than any other stick style balm I've tried because it's more oil and less beeswax or other similar ingredient based so it seems like it sinks in better and really absorbs rather than sits on top of the lips. It's probably my fav lip moisturizer I've tried yet. Thanks a bunch Meg!
Mmm looks yummy and juicy! I'd much prefer it in a tube, most of the time I find it annoying to have to dip my finger in a tub and what do you do with the leftover on your finger that your lips can't take??
I'm glad we're past putting on ear wax and animal fat on our lips! This product sounds extremely divine, I do hope I get to try this soon!
I love natural things, but not so natural as ear wax yikes! That colour looks lovely I'd like to try the stick one (maybe on Christmas)
I got this with my Meg points and I too hate using lip products from a jar. I don't always carry around a lip brush with me and I hate the idea of putting my finger into it and then applying it to my lips. This stuff however, makes THE BEST cuticle balm. It's also really pretty to put on your eyes on no make up days to give them a nice sheen. The product just makes me feel girly AND green!
That's such a pretty shade. I've never tried her products before.

This looks cute and yummy! I love lipbalm and have a chapstick or lipbalm in every bag I own. Just so I don't have to move them from one to the other, and so I know I always have one. There's one on my night stand and one in my makeup drawer. I have been known to use good old Bonne Bell many a time. And when my eyes get a little dry in the winter, a little chapstick around the edges at night really heals while you sleep.
ear wax..from who/what lol? *cringes*but yes, im definitely happy were passed that lol....sounds like a lovely product though
I got the Camellia rose balm and love it! It's extremely soothing and so smooth that when you put some on your lips and then move them back and forth to spread the balm, your lips literally just glide across each other! It's a joy to put on your lips! It has a super silky quality and gives a wonderful element of shine to your lips too! I use Revlon's ColorStay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick because I absolutely love how long the color stays on my lips but...my lips always feel dry after putting it on. I have discovered that if I immediately apply the Camellia rose balm over the Colorstay it's just perfect - I get the combo of great color and creamy, dreamy, moist lips! The only downside for me is I don't particularly like putting my finger in the little pot to get at the balm because once the balm gets low, when I put my finger inside to get at the balm, inevitably my fingernail gets full of the balm too. My way around this is...because the balm is super soft and malleable, I take a knife and I push the product to one side as much as possible within the container. That way my finger goes in and I can get a clean swipe at the product on my fingertip without sinking my finger in! Don't know if you followed that or not, but it works for me! I give this product high points and I like the gentle fragrance! Totally makes for most kissable lips! Another plus is that there is a LOT in this little pot so you won't run out for quite awhile! I love, love, LOVE the texture of it on my lips! This is definitely one of my favorites!
Jeanasina!
Oooh, great tip Jeanasina! I've never thought of that (I too hate getting a fingernail full of gloss. Ick).

I have so many lip balms now that I should be on a no-buy... BUT I'm sure I can fit in one more, as soon as I figure out how to get my hands on one! The balm sounds amazing. I want a natural lip balm that has sun protection -- this seems it!
I heard about Julie Hewitt a couple months ago & have browsed her site a bit. Once some of the many lip balms I have scattered around, I think this one will be my next purchase! Thanks for the review to help me make up my mind!!

Using earwax sounds just plain nasty. So glad we've got better options now! Never tried this one, even though I'm addicted to lip balms. I have them lying around everywhere so I always have one close by.
Ah, I have five balms on the nightstand next to our bed. I like the other four, but this version outdoes itself. It has a gentle smell and the most luxurious, soft feel, and I find myself not needing to "balm" as often as I used to do. It does go a long way in terms of healing my ravaged skin. I applaud this product (and it's lovely to look at as well).
Just a little suggestion, ladies: use a lipstick brush. I know it sounds old fashioned, but I use one all the time. It makes my tube colors last longer, of course, but when it comes to glosses and balms in pots, that's where the brush simply shines. You are never left with a fingertip full of "what do I do with this?" and nothing gets crammed under your nails. Brushes are still sold, and they cost practically nothing. Maybelline makes a good one, ditto Sephora. And the best are either retractable or come with a cap that can be used as a lengthening handle. Easy peasy.
Sounds like a great lip balm and will probably take tantejoan's advice about brushes. I love lip balm that's in a pot, I don't know why but something about it is just so much more fun than the stick (maybe it's just me), but I don't often buy them. I've been a burt's bees user for awhile now and they work really great for me although I am interested to hear about the cameillia oil. hmmm.
I love this product. Meg sent it to me and I totally love it. It smells incredible (very fruity, with a hint of floral in there) and looks amazing on. It adds just a tiny bit of shimmer and color to my lips. Plus it's light and not goopy or sticky at all. Definitely love this one :)
I love balms and chapstick, I have 3 different kinds in my purse right now. I think I am addicted. Don't use gloss/lipstick daily but apply balms a few times a day. I like the stick form because I don't like to stick my finger in a tub, I have a lip brush but then it's a lot of work, finding my balm and brush and applying. It's just more convinent to use a stick. I do however have Dr. Dima's AstroPucker balm on my night stand and use it everynight. It instantly soothes my lips and makes them look soft and supple. It's in a pot so again being lazy I just run the pot over my lips like it was a stick when it gets low I'll have to bust out my lip brush but I've had it for awhile and it's still got a lot in there.

wow that color is gorgeous, I must have it :) & the fact that its sheer & beneficial is even better! great post!
LOVE this line and LOVE this product!!! I have the same shade and it's soooo dreamy and creamy and honestly trumps all other lip balms out there IMO! Im not a big fan of the pot so I sort of do like Jeana and scoop it to one side so I can get a proper dip going,LOL! Absolutely fabulous all the way around for me!!!
This line looks beautiful! I'm intrigued.I am currently using Palmers Cocoa Butter Lip Butter on the recommendation of a friend, and it gives me the most lovely lightly pepperminty nourished lips ever - and unlike most balms, it doesn't result in my lips flaking after it sinks in!
Instead of sticking my finger in balms, I use a brush. I am a stickler about being sanitary. I liked this balm, found it to be everything Joan says and will buy it again. There is hardly any color so for me I use it more for keeping my lips moist and plumped.
Beste Hilsin
That sounds like such a lush balm and I love the look of the pot packaging--something about it just looks really elegant, you know? I'm a lip product freak so I've always got all kinds of gloss and balm in my purse but none of them look that classy!
This lip balm is gorgeous Meg sent it me and I haven't stopped using it since go buy it girls it's fab !!!!
I have used this fabulous pot of love everyday since Meg sent it to me. It's awfully elegant for a lip balm. The packaging alone impresses while the staying power and subtle tint of color keeps you going back for more even when you don't really need it. It also did a great job of keeping my mom's poor wimpy, chapped, post-surgical lips moist and supple. I'm not sure which is my favorite, the sheer wash of color I get each time I reapply or the way it make my lips feel. I. love. this. lip. balm.......
Cac! (Very funny!) You're not kidding, good ol' Martha will probably start stocking the shelves at Macy's with earwax lip balm, faster than we can dispose of our q-tips! Yikes!
Ooooooh! Wanna try this!!! I just love lippies, especially those are moisturizing!!!
Makeupaholic on a budget!!!
I got this in my package from Meg, and I really REALLY like it. It smelsl like grapefruits, it has a very light and pleasent feeling, and ITS ORGANIC!!Love love love itttt
I love the ingredients in this! I didn't know that camellia oil was the closest to your natural skin. But this sounds like one hell of a lipbalm because of the ingredients. I bet it smells and tastes really good too with all of those essential oils. I'm a firm believer that my lip balm should taste and smell as good as it works. You could give me the best quailty lipbalm out there, but if it didn't taste and smell good I probably wouldn't use it. I also love lipbalms in pots. Even though I secretly hate the residue it leaves on my finger. And it is such a pain to carry a lip brush around just for lip balm. So that is where my good old hand sanitizer comes into play. I do use lip balm in a tube occasionally, but I prefer it to be in a pot. My mom is also a big lip balm junkie, and this sounds like the perfect gift to get her for xmas! I must look into this!
I have way too many lip balms, glosses, etc. but I just love them so much. Looks like this is going on my wishlist...
