GETTING TO KNOW MAKEUPPER! SPOTLIGHT ON CHRISTEL HANSEN!
Name: Christel Hansen
Age: 22
Vocation: Freelance Makeup Artist!
What is in your purse? Cell phone, ipod nano, wallet, small mirror, dental floss, keys, asthma inhaler, Anatomicals Stop Cracking Up lip balm, MAC Fleshpot lipstick and The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Facial Blotting Tissues!
Guilty Pleasure: Home and Away! I simply cannot miss an episode of it! If I do, I watch the omnibus at the end of the week to catch up on anything I may have missed, lol. I'm also a sucker for homemade cookies and cupcakes, yum!
Skin color, type and any special skin concerns: I have fair skin which can get pretty oily. My main concerns are my dark undereye circles (concealer is a must!) and the occasional breakouts I get. :(
Beauty inspiration: My mommy of course! I love everything about her and think she looks damn good for her age! I only hope that I too look that good when I'm older!
Top 3 skincare products:
- Cetaphil moisturizer - I love using this on both myself and my clients. As well as being a fabulous moisturizer, it's also great to mix with foundations to make them thinner and more sheer.
- Lucas Papaw Ointment - I can't live without this! It's by far the best lip moisturizer you could ever use. I slather it on at night before bed and my lips are beautiful and soft in the morning!
- Aloe Vera Gel - I use this as an everyday makeup primer and would recommend it to everyone. It really is fantastic!
Top 3 tools of the trade:
- Beautyblender - I love it! Makes my job effortless and the results are amazing!
- Avon Heated Eyelash Curler - I have a huge fear of using traditional eyelash curlers on people other than myself (I would die if they moved and I ended up pulling out their eyelashes!) so I tried this and I have to say, the results are even better than traditional curlers!
- MAC 217 Brush - Love this for both applying and blending eyeshadow. It's also amazing as a concealer brush!
Best beauty secret / tip: I alternate between shampoo and baking soda to wash my hair - so one day I'll wash my hair with shampoo, next time I'll wash with baking soda, etc. I find that the baking soda cleans my hair better than any shampoo ever has! I also like to mix a little baking soda with my cleanser - it's great for exfoliating the face. Only do this once or twice a week at most though!
Three current beauty products you'd like to buy:
- MUFE Flash Palette - it's not even available here :(
- Yaby Pearl Paints Palette
- Yaby Liquid Foundations
Favorite Drugstore Product and why - Covergirl Lash Blast - love it, love it, LOVE IT!
Favorite Splurge Item - Flowerbomb perfume by Viktor & Rolf! I adore the smell of this and was actually lucky enough to get this for my birthday so I won't have to buy any for awhile!
If I was on a limited beauty budget I would - Beg, borrow and steal!
Great to get to know you Christel! And great to read all these answers from the viewpoint of a makeup artist!
What does baking soda do to your hair that shampoo doesn't? Does Aloe Vera gel work well as a primer for you ladies too?

Your eyes look amazing in that photo, how did you get that look? I love it!
Thank you!! :) I actually have a post on my blog about all the products I used for that look, which you can view here: http://makeupper.blogspot.com/2009/04/fotd-purple-smokey-eye.html :D It's basically just a pink eyeshadow pigment that has a blue pearl in it, applied over a dark cream base.
Nice to meet you! Love the idea of baking soda as a shampoo. I will have to try that and see how it works for me!

Hi there! Thank you, it's nice to meet you too! :D Oh you definitely have to try it! Because it's such a great cleaner in general (I use it as a household cleaner as well, haha!) it gets rid of all the product buildup you get from shampoos/conditioners/hairspray etc and really gives your hair a deep clean. :D
Hi Christel! I love your eyes! I love your eyeliner, it really makes your eyes pop. I want the Yaby Pearl Paints palette too because they already look foiled. It looks amazing and it claims to be waterproof!!!

Hi! Thank you! :D Omg, I know right, it looks so amazing! I have the Dramatically Neutral palette which has a couple of pearl paints in it, and they're so gorgeous!! And it's on sale at www.makeupandglow.com.au at the moment - argh, if only I had the money! :P
Nice to meet you christel!you look absolutely gorgeous in your photo! i envy your vocation, i'd loveee to be a make up artist and considered to take a make up course but unfortunately i'm not very coherent in putting colours together, it's often obscured, nonetheless i enjoy seeing match artists at work, it's like painting a beautiful picture on a blank canvas :)

Hi Lily! Nice to meet you too! Thank you so much! :D Being a makeup artist is quite possibly the greatest thing in the world, lol! I would definitely encourage you to take a makeup course if you're really interested in it! And trust me, the whole colour thing comes naturally after awhile because you have to practice it so much! :P
Hello! I would be interested in learning what baking soda does to your hair too.. You have great skin, so I may have to try the aloe vera gel trick! Thanks!

Hi there! :D Baking soda basically gives your hair a really deep cleanse and gets rid of all the product buildup you get from using any hair products. It's truly great! Thank you!! :D Definitely give it a go! If it doesn't work for you atleast you'll always have it on standby for burns and stuff, lol :P
Nice getting to know you, Christel. I love the Bod Shop and want to try The Beautyblender!
http://ediblelove.wordpress.com/
Hi there! :D Oh me too! I really need to go there soon and get some more satsuma shower gel :P The beautyblender is amazing! Although if you're in the states I hear there's a cheaper version of it that's blue.. sorry I'm not quite sure of the name.. but anyway I hear it's supposed to be just as good as the beautyblender! If it was available here, I would've tried that first! :P
I think the cheaper bb is the Sonia Kashuk bell sponge, it's available from Target in the US.
http://www.beautifullyglossy.blogspot.com
Yeah, that's the one! :D
Hi Christel! I'll definitely have to try that baking soda trick on my hair. And I also love Cetaphil--it's so gentle. I had no idea about mixing it with your foundation to thin it out though! Very cool.
♥ Lipgloss and Spandex: a blog for gals who look good and run fast
Hi!! :D Definitely give it a go, I hope you like it as much as I do! Cetaphil is GREAT mixed with foundations! I always mix it with my cream foundations - it makes them all buttery and amazing! I love it! And when mixed with liquid foundations you can get a perfectly matched tinted moisturiser. :)
Hi Christel, its nice to meet you:) Being a makeup artist must be a great job. I also love lucas's pawpaw ointment to bits, its fantastic
Hi there! :) It really is, I couldn't think of a more enjoyable job to be honest! Lucas papaw is GREAT! I go through so much of it though, I love how it can be used for anything and everything!
Hi Christel, Thanks for the great ideas. What a compliment to give your mom...she is lucky that she has a daughter that admires her! Have never caught a episode of Home and Away...what's it about?
♥Robyn♥
Hi there! Hehe, I feel even more lucky that I have her, and she's just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside! Home and away is an Australian drama set in Summer Bay (a beautiful little town on the coast). It basically just follows the lives of all the people who live there and of course being a drama, there's always something crazy happening. :P It's been going for years, if you're familiar with Neighbours, I think it's the same kinda thing, but waaay better in my opinion. :P
Oh wow you are gorgeous! Its great to meet you! I must say I have a love hate relationship with Home and Away - depending on the year!! Good old Aussie dramas!
Thank you so much!! It's great meeting you too! Oh I can't get enough of it, hahaha! I love how there is always so much drama that if you do happen to miss a few episodes you don't know what's going on! Lol! And I adore Alf, everything he says just cracks me up! :P
I have never heard of a heated eyelash curler, and I'm a huge Avon junkie. I want one!!
I used to be an Avon rep which is how I found out about it! :D It's sooo good! And it doesn't get hot enough to burn you, so you don't need to worry about burning your eyelashes off (which would be even scarier than pulling them out with a traditional curler!) Lol!
Thank you so much!! :D Omg, I haven't seen that in so long - dying to see it now! Baking soda really is soo good! And I have to admit, it's hard not to love a site as amazing as this!! :D
I always love doing makup on my friends, so doing it for a living must be so fun :) Nice getting to know you!
It really is!! The greatest feeling is when you've just done someone's makeup and they keep thanking you and can't stop staring at themselves in the mirror! There really is nothing better than making someone feel good about themself. :D
I really want to try heated eyelash curler, are they pricey??I also love Lucas's paw paw, I used for cracked heels + socks overnight = smoooth feet.x
The one I bought was about $25 NZD, so it is more expensive that what you'd usually pay for a traditional curler, but in my opinion it's definitely worth it! Oh I'll have to try it on my heels!! They're always so dry and cracked, would be great if it helps :D
Oh I want to try that, I've always been frightened of the traditional curlers. It's similar to this one? http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P20039&categoryId=B70Love your make-up, you have really loooong lashes.
Thank you!! :) It is very similar to that one, it takes an AA battery which is really what you want - anything with a AAA battery won't work quite as well. Also, you get the best results if you use this after applying mascara - while the mascara is still wet!
Great to meet you Christel! I'm a huge fan of the beauty blender too, it's the best sponge I've ever used.
http://www.beautifullyglossy.blogspot.com
Hiii! I love it! Definitely pricey, but with results like that, I can't complain! :P Hey I just realised, I follow your blog! :D
Christel is the greatest! (:This was a great, informative post. I'll have to check out some of these products.
My Beauty Blog:http://www.glam-morena.com/
Aww, thanks Rai!! :D
I love your eyes in that pic! Wow is all I can say. Thanks for the link to your blog post featuring the how to. I checked it out and plan to try it when I have some free time. I am a huge lover of homemade cookies that are soft and gooey and I love cupcakes. I love them so much that I am so happy I found a receipe that calls for pumpkin instead of oil & eggs. It really brought the calorie count down so I don't feel guilty. LOL. Thank you for all your great beauty tips and for sharing with us!
Thank you! :) I hope it's useful and would love to know how it turns out when you try it! Homemade cookies and cupcakes don't last long in this house, I tell ya. Lol! Pumpkin instead of oil and eggs?! That sounds really interesting! I can honestly say that I would try and eat cookies and cupcakes for every single meal if they weren't so unhealthy. :P
i never thought to use aloe vera gel as a primer. i have used the aloe vera thing meg sent me a while ago as a primer and it works well, just not at controlling oil and that's what i really need.
http://www.youtube.com/ashleya1002
I love it as a primer! I find it actually works much better than the Smashbox photofinish primer - for everyday use atleast! It seems to control the oil on my face quite well, but I'm not sure if it would be enough if you have really oily skin. A mattifying gel would probably be much more useful!
wow Christel, your makeup is impeccable! And your baking soda tip sounds really good. I just googled it and thinking of trying it tomorrow! Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you!! :) I hope the baking soda trick works for you! I have to say by the way, that those cupcakes look delicious :P
You are a living DOLL!!! I love your look and even more,I love the passion and joy you project that comes through in your posts.Wishing you fabulous continued success and the world IS a prettier place because of you and what you do! :)Baking soda ia genius: I use it once a week or so to cleanse, brush my teeth, and throw into my bath to get toxins out! LOVE that you use it on your hair...genius!Lash Blash is amazing,I agree,I wear it to work out and it doesn't BUDGE!!! Much easier to remove than my fav "Bourjois Clubbing" for sure and such a bargin! Thrilled to meet you Hon! :)
Thank you so much!!! :D I'm going to have to start using baking soda to brush my teeth, I imagine the results are great! Lash Blast is so good, the wand itself is amazing! So nice to meet you too, and I have to say I absolutely LOVE reading all your posts! :D
MMMMM Home made cupcakes are the BEST!hmmm aloe gel as a primer... I have tons left over from a trip to hawaii that Im never gonna burn now that im tan! mabey I should give it a try!And Ive never heard of washing your hair with baking soda... so you just use the powder or do you make it into some kind of paste?
Tan is Love
Yeah they really are!! :D Is your aloe vera gel the clear kind? Not sure if the green ones you can get would work very well to be honest. I've used baking soda in three different ways - I've applied baking soda straight onto my hair without mixing it with anything, made a paste by adding water to it and applying that, and also mixed some with my shampoo and then applied that. All three ways have worked well (although applying it straight to the hair seems to work best), just make sure that your hair is wet before using it! :D
Hey, nice to meet you and thanks for the baking soda tip!
Hi there! Nice to meet you too! :D You're more than welcome, hope you find it useful! :)
What great tips! Thanks for all the info! Wonderful getting to know ya.
Thanks! Hope you find them useful! :)
Hi Cristel, using baking soda is a good tip, I used to it but I don't know why I stopped. Baiking soda is a great all round helper as is aloe vera, I never knew it was a good "go-to as a make-up primer! Thanks for the great tips, Nice to meet you!
