MARCO PELUSI I HAVE A COWLICK SO BAD I'M GOING TO CRY! HELP ME!
Punkeydew sent in this hair question for Mr. Marco Pelusi this morning and as usual, Marco answered lickety split!...
Q: I have this flat spot in the back of my hair and the way it lays it looks like a bald patch sometimes if I don't style it right. I imagine it's from where I sleep every night, with the added help of a few cowlicks.
Any advice on styling that section to make it come out?
A: Hi Punkeydew!!! Great question. The flat spot first should be addressed by your hairstylist within your cut. Your hairstylist should aim to leave the flat area as long as possible, while supporting it with fullness in the surrounding areas. We call it 'respecting growth patterns'. The biggest problem I see is when areas such as yours are simply cut too short, so longer in that area is usually better.
For you yourself, the first thing you should do is give that area a strong massage while shampooing. Manipulation of the scalp area, especially in difficult spots such as these, forces circulation into that area. Finally, while styling your hair, add a lightweight, non-sticky gel or 'root boost' in that area before styling, to create maximum fullness. Marco Color Control Gel is superb for this purpose! Hope this helps.

I was going to say-- a good haircut could definitely help solve that problem. It's always good to read Marco's hair advice.

OMG fast!!!Thanks! I never really realized that my cut would help at all! I never mention it to my stylist or anything. And I just moved so Im going to have to address this issue first when finding a new stylist! It used to not be a big deal, but its gotten worse and worse over the years. Here's to hoping it gets better! Thanks!

Thanks for the advice, Marco! :)

This is good advice for me. I have a lot of cowlicks on my back hairline. I also have a very low hairline in the back. I can't do short cuts at all, and I love short hair. I wish I could have electrolysis on the back of my neck.
What a fantastic piece of advice! I love you Marco! :D ♥
Thanks Marco, you're always so helpful :) Good luck punkydew, I hope you find a great stylist!
Thanks Marco! You can never have enough tips and tricks for those trouble spots.
ugh, I have a bad cowlick on the side of my head, so I don't cut bangs even though I know I'd look WAY better with them!I totally feel you on this.
Thanks for the advice! I too have a couple of cowlicks. While annoying, I have found that as long as I use the proper products, I can manipulate my cowlicks pretty well. For me, good volumizer does the trick, and I have to make to to blow dry the area with special consideration. I always do the cowlick on my bangs first, and finish my style by doing the cowlick that sounds just like punkydew's. I do like the the idea of weighing down the cowlick, so to speak.
Thanks Marco! I never realised that a cut would help my cowlicks until my new stylist mention it to me the first time she cut my hair. "Oh no I can't give you a part on the side you've always had it. You've got a cowlick, it'd be better to part the other side" and I've never looked back! No more silly bangs for me!
Thanks for the great advice Marco. I have a cowlick at my hairline, and combined with my widow's peak it creates havoc when I want to wear my hair down. I usually solve the problem by wearing my hair up
I have the almost the exact same thing, except its a whorl (like little boys get, ugh)! This is great advice. I also find that using Velcro rollers helps a ton! I heat the area up with a flat iron, pop a roller in for 5 minutes until it cools down, then take it out and its perfect.

great advice! i don't think anyone can surpass a good hair cut, it's crucial! i've been to a few terrible hair dressers and they left my dead straight hair flat and ugly, it literally looked like I had a piece of paper covering my head... there was no volume or style.. he gave me a terrible fringe urgh!

I agree that a good haircut is very important esp if your hair is not "standard". I have cowlicks & less hair on the right side of my head. I used to go to a Japanese hairstylist who knows how to work my hair. Sadly, he returned to Japan early this year. I went to another stylist who thinks the best way to cut my hair is to straighten it with flat iron before cutting it. It looked good initially but after one wash, my cowlicks sprung back to life. This is one of the worst hair cuts I'd had in years. My hair is so messy and lopsided now. My search for a new stylist continues... Punkeydew, best of luck in yours! ♥
Someday this will be helpful! My 11-month-old son has a crazy cowlick from the way he sleeps and someday that's going to bug him! And yes, I'll raise him to be the kind of man not afraid of a little product! :)
oops sorry double post

This is helpful information. I don't have a cowlick, but my husband does. And it's incredible how it just sticks straight up. He doesn't use any product, but now at least I can tell him his haircut might solve the problem. Unfortunately, he usually either cuts it himself - or goes to one of those quick, cheap haircut places. Obviously, I have a LOT of work to do with him! Wouldn't you think by now some of my addictions would have rubbed off on him? :-)

I've finally realized that it's all about the cut. I was always getting frustrated with my previous hairdresser because he couldn't get my cut right. My hair always ends up poofy because of the way it was cut. Then I went to another hairdresser and now my hair falls in the right place because of the better cut!
Great tips! I have a cowlick in the front and use your tips from a previous feature regarding usage of a flat iron in those areas! Thank you so much!
ahaha i use to get cowlicks all the time :P

Great tip--I've got a bit of a spot in the back, it's just because of where my part ends, that almost looks a little bald...Definitely going to address that when I get my next cut.
i have a cowlick at the back of my neck and everytime i get a haircut, my stylists sometimes has problems but she got around to being familiar with it and work with the situation.
Oh my god i have two cowlick in my fringe and every morning i'm fighting whit my hair so baddd :(
Thanks for the advice! Although I know that scalp massages are a classic part of haircuts and the "treatment" at salons, I never thought of it like that - and I will definitely be "massaging" the shampoo into my hair more from now on!Thanks again for your expertise!

I have these two cowlicks where my bangs used to live. The cowlicks are on each side of my forehead and it makes my bangs point inward to the center of my forehead like this. ))(( Since the only way I was able to make my bangs stay put was by emptying a whole bottle of hair spray on them each day, I gave up and got rid of my bangs. Now, I just have long layers in the front and those cowlicks aren't causing me anymore trouble.

Maybe research online or next time you're at the hairdressers, enquire the hairdresser and see if they have any solution to this, I would just cover with more hair but not sure. Hope you find a solution.
Thanks for the tips! I'm definitely going to try more massage in my trouble areas when I shampoo. I'm a little hesitant about applying products at my roots because I don't like the feel of product on my scalp and I don't usually want root volume. I'll remember to talk to my stylist about root products though - there should be something out there for me.
My hair gets flips and bends all the time, but I'm learning to work with it instead of against it using the "plopping method".
so cute
