CALLING ALL MY CURLY GIRLS! MIXED CHICKS DEEP CONDITIONER
MissRo here! When it comes to my hair, I am constantly on the search for products that will help keep my curly locks frizz-free. It doesn't matter if I'm keeping my hair curly or blowing it out straight, I need products that are going to tame the frizz.
When I was doing some research online, I came across the Mixed Chicks brand. I instantly perked up, because I am a mixed chick! My Mother is Jamaican, Scottish and my Father is Polish, Jewish. I thought, wow, a brand specifically for me! I immediately got in touch with them and asked them if I could try their product.
So on Monday (which is my wash-the-hair day, because I only wash my hair twice a week. I'm telling you, it's the way to go. It makes your hair super healthy), I decided to try their Deep Conditioner. It comes in a healthy-sized tub for only...$10.99! I shampooed my hair and grabbed about the size of a large grape of the conditioner. I massaged it through my hair and then combed it through. (Tip - Ladies to get the most out of any conditioner, always comb it through. It helps to get the product through every inch of your hair, but also helps with styling).
On to my blow dry! Well, I have to tell you, I was pretty impressed. I put in my styling products as usual, but I felt my hair was easier to blow dry and light as a feather. Not to mention my hair dried faster than normal, which I was quite surprised about.
The next time I wash my hair, I will have to let it dry in my naturally curly state. I'm sure I will be as impressed with the Deep Conditioner with my curly hair as I am with my hair blown out. I will also give their Shampoo a try and let you know how that product is.
To learn more about Mixed Chicks, click here. You can find Mixed Chicks pretty much worldwide. From California to Scotland and every where in between.
Do you have naturally curly hair? If so, do you blow dry it all the time or where it curly? What are some of your favorite products to use to stay frizz-free?

The Brangelina crowd uses this, that's a pretty high endorsement!
I'm not sure if you're joking but I'll take a grin anyway! :D
Mine is naturally pretty wavy and if I dont flat iron it it just lloks like frizzy waves :x. I really need to find some products that will help define my waves. This sounds like awesome stuff.
I have used the coconut oil lately and it has tamed down a lot of my frizziness and added so much shine. I used to blow my hair out every other day, because if it is just air dried then I won't wear it down. It just looks horrible with half super curly and the other half just wavy, tons of frizzies and no body. Yuck! When I was blowing it out I used the CHI silk or John Frieda Frizz Tamer serum but they only kind of worked to tame it but did add shine. I used the Pantene for Color Deep Moisture shampoo with the olive oil in it (think its pretty new from them) because I have really dry hair but it proved to be TOO much oil for my hair. Do you think that would be the case from Mixed Chicks MissRo?

I have naturally curly hair and always wear it curly. I just use leave-in conditioner (Infusium23) that I always comb through and after air drying I end up with bunches of spiral curls. I've tried to blow it straight before but wasn't ever happy with the results.
I am a Mixed Chick myself (Hawaiian and Irish) and I'ved used Aveda products pretty successfully for years. Saw the Mixed Chick products on this website, and I'm intrigued! will definitely give it a try.oh, and I definitely do not blow out. It would take way too long! I diffuse dry, everyday, wearing my hair natural and CURLY.
Thanks for the review, i'm excited to try this stuff out. I have a question MissRo...You say you only wash your hair twice a week...what about on days when you exercise or get sweaty? Do you wash your hair on those days, or just rinse? I've tried just rinsing, and I can't get my hair to look good. I have naturally curly hair and would love to be able to wash it as little as possible, but was curious to find out how to go without washing on sweaty days. :) Does anyone have any advice?
I only wash my hair once or twice a week as well, but rinse thoroughly and condition the ends every day. Works well for me, even on exercise days.
rhianrae, I also just wash my hair twice a week. I just tend to put my hair up in a bun and wash my body after excersising, I know it might seem gross but really, my hair is not sweaty after exercising just the rest of me. ;)MissRo, thanks for the review. I've been looking at a few deep treatments lately and will be sure to see if I can give this one a try.
Really great tip about combing your conditioner through--I never would've thought of that but it makes total sense. My hair is straight-ish but it's weird because while it's fine in texture, it's very dense and there's a lot of it--I have to get it thinned out every time I get it cut because it gets really heavy. I don't wash my hair every day either. For most of my life it was completely impossible to not wash it every day--it would look greasy, limp, and all-around nasty if I didn't. But, since I've switched to natural shampoos, I've discovered something...That wasn't my hair's natural behavior, the shampoos and products I'd been using all my life had made it behave that way. With natural shampoos, I can get away with washing my hair every other day or even every third day, AND my normally pin straight hair actually has some nice texture to it now. I can't believe what a difference this has made. So, for those of you who think you can't possibly cut down the number of times per week you wash your hair--consider switching!
I never, ever blow dry my curly hair. It gets way to frizzy when I do. And I am completely impatient!! It takes too long. But I am always on the look out for great new products for my curls. This line sounds great. I heard about it awhile ago. But I never really thought to try it until our Miss Ro gave it such a positive review. Thanks! I look forward to getting my hands on some in the near future!
I just clicked on the advertisement for this on Meg'smakeup home page last night and spent a while reviewing their site. It sounds like something I am definitely going to try in the near future. It seems to be very similar, in philosophy, to the Jessicurl line. Altough, I'm hoping I like it better than the Jessicurl line, their conditioner just wasn't heavy enough for me. I have naturally wavy hair that is prone to frizz. It is also very fine and very long, past my bra strap. I stopped blow drying about 7 years ago to let it grow without damage. When I used heat styling on a regular basis, I could never get my hair to grow more than a couple of inches past my shoulders. So I stopped heat styling and just let it grow for about 5 years. By that time it was pretty healthy and I could heat style once in a while. My routine is to wash 2-3 times per week. I use several different haircare lines, Pureology, NoPoo, Wen, Dessert Essencse. I kind of gave up on the traditional salon brands and found that the formulas that were more natural worked a lot better. I never blow dry, ever. I wash my hair at night, with one of the forementioned brands. Then I put in a styling product at the roots and top half of my hair. Right now I'm using a mousse by Tigi for fine hair. Then concentrating on the ends and bottom half, I use something more moisturizing. Right now I'm using David Babaii hair polish. That stuff is amazing. I comb it all through and wind my hair in a top not at the top of my head and clip it. I sleep on it and in the morning I have polished controlled waves with no frizz. Usually I touch up the fringe with the GHD styler. This is an iron that does waves, straightens and many other styles because the plates to do not have sharp defined edges. I bought mine from Sephora for about $200, but it is well worth it. It does far, far less damage than any other heat tool.

You mentioned the Jessicurl conditioner wasnt' enough for you. Was it the regular conditioner or the Too Shea? I LOVE the Too Shea and can't imagine it not working. But then again everyone's hair reacts differently. Just curious!

I've heard about this line in the past (curly head here) and this seems like an awesome product! While I'm not mixed race in the traditional sense (Sicilian here) my hair is crazy thick and curly and my sisters hair comes out of her head in corkscrews...I think I'll buy her(and myself!) a tub of this :)

I don't have curly hair, but I get the WORST knots (like almost dreadlocks lol). I need a super moisturizing conditioner...this sounds great!

Miss Ro, i am excited about the new product! i am not a mixed chick, but just like Melilala, 100% Sicilian and have major frizz with mixed curl and waves. So i think i too will give this conditioner a try!I am also looking for any kind of tips regarding blowing my curls out. I have done it several times, but it takes so long and is still frizzy and even with a straight iron i feel its too much work...so i welcome any help you guys can give!! thanks!!!
The only bummer about this product is that the 5th ingredient is a silicone. I, being a curly girl myself, stay clear of silicones because I don't use a SLS shampoo. You have to use a SLS shampoo to remove the silicone or it just builds up and suffocates your hair.
This sounds like pretty nice stuff, and a great price too! I have naturally curly/wavy hair and I let it air dry 99% of the time. I use either Morrocanoil (the best!), Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Renewal (also has argan oil) or Fekkai glossing cream. The only time I have a problem with frizz now is if it's super humid.

this looks like a great line, but they dont list their ingredients... that's just a deal breaker for me. i'm not a curly... at all... but i love jessicurls too shea, and i liked their deep treat sample (hated their shampoo tho).
well i will have to remember this before I buy more conditioner..thanks
I have wavy hair that can get pretty frizzy. I am always on the lookout for new products. I just started using Herbal Essence totally twisted and really like what it does for my hair. I have used hair cholestoral from CVS recently like $5 as a deep condidtioner and it really made my hair shiny. I also have added Aveda Be Curly and if the right amount is used workes great for my hair. I am a minimalist when it comes to styling my hair so a good cut and great products are key. I recently got the best compliment ever "Your hair looks really shiny and healthy. I just love your hair."It was soo great to hear because I do put a lot of energy into trying to keep int healthy. This deep conditioner sounds good. I've also use Oscar Blandi deep conditioner and though it worked well. I have really oily hair so I kinda have to wash my hair everyday but if I'm short on time I will use Oscar Blandi dry shampoo and it works great-soaks up oil and has a nice smell it's lemon verbana. I also use citre shine on my dry hair to tame fly aways.

I too LOVED Jessicurls Too Shea but I haven't tried the shampoo yet. I've often been intrigued by this line just because the ladies are SO pretty and their hair looks great! I would be interested to try this and see how it stands up next to the Too Shea I love so much.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
Do it! They have like a travel size type of kit where you can get all of the products (a cleanser, two types of conditioner, + styling products) suitable for your hair type. Fine or coarse. You can try out the entire line that way. A little bit goes a long way so you get a lot for the money. Isn't your hair super dry? I think I remember you saying that. If so, even if it is fine in texture, I'd go with the coarse. Aloeba conditioner is the daily conditioner in the Fine kit with Too Shea! as the deep. I don't think Aloeba will do enough for you, it's light (although I've heard of some people using it as a leave in with great results). In the coarse kit, Too Shea! is the daily and there's an even richer conditioner called Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment that you use...well... weekly. :)
I saw this brand for the time 1st time surfing the web. It looks awesome. It is really cool when you find a product that works, I am happy for MissRo and I enjoy MissRo's articles too. I will pass on the 411 to my friends.
Oh...I have also been trying out the David Babaii products and so far am really liking them! Future reviews for me!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
VERY eager to hear about these!
I have naturally wavy, very frizzy hair. What products do I use? Anything and everything that says it will help tame the frizz. Nothing works!Next up, MIXED CHICKS!
I was first told about it in a beauty supply store. And was like, "no way I am like the furthest thing from a mixed chick." The sales lady said it was really great... and I still said, "may be if you had JewFro" Anyway, that was over a year or two ago and Meg gave Me some to try and it is great stuff. It made my hair look and feel amazing. I have to say, "I like my mixed chicks" Asian/black, Mexican/white, Irish/jewish, french/italian, Russian/Greek, anything/anything.... all beautiful. Hey, I even like non-mixed-chicks.
This wouldn't do anything for me, but I have a mixed cousin who I bet would love it, I'll have to tell her about this brand!
ref26, Don't be so sure. It makes a great lather. I think it's worth a try. My hair is so far from a "mixed chick" DNA but the aroma and the later and the way my hair looks is great. It is meant to nurture and control curly hair but I really like it. If you try and and don't like it, you can give it to your cousin.... :-)

I have naturally curly hair...err..naturally frizzy hair! So i always blow dry it strait and flat iron...its very hard to wear my hair curly because my "curls" are so undefined. Its a fact that curly hair gets much more dry and brittle than strait hair does. I would really be interested in trying this product....its specifically made for us curly girlies and sounds like it works wonders!!! <3
"Never take someone for granted. Hold every person close to your heart because you might wake up one day and realize that you've lost a diamond while you were too busy collecting stones..."
I wear my hair au natural half of the time. I tend to make it stick straight for things like weddings, interviews etc. I'm not quite sure why. Maybe I would go more often au natural if I had the right products and my curls didn't look so wild. I will put this on my list of potential conditioners.
I want to get thisss!! My hair is usually not frizzy at all and pretty straight, but it's really damaged due to dyeing it too many times and also straightening/blowdrying without a protecting spray/cream on.
I wish I could go more than a day without washing my hair! By day 1.5, my scalp eczema starts to go nuts. But since I have curly hair that's on the coarse side, I do enjoy deep conditioners -- but it's hard for me to find one that won't add to my already oily scalp. The new Neutrogena deep conditioner works ok, but I'm still looking for my "go to" hair mask.
This sounds pretty good. Right now i'm using Frizz-ease Secret Weapon which works but i dont really like the smell so much. Maybe i'll try this when i run out of my FE.
I have been looking at the add over on the side for a few weeks now and am very interested!Did they give you samples when you contacted them?I would be interested in trying it. I have curly unruly hair thats frizzy and flat and takes 10 plb of hairspray to make doable. Ive bought sooooo many products only to be dissapointed in them and now I am product weary!!! I stick to the stuff I have.... Which is crunchy curls but I LONG to have soft beautiful curls with body and definition!I usually add product and let dry naturally. If Im feeling extra vigerous I add product and blow dry upside down with a diffuser for more volumous curls.I only wash my hair...ohhh Every other to every 2 days. Will have to contact them and see if they sell sampl sizes

when i was wearing my hair natural, i used carols daughter products and sebastian "wet" to controll frizz. i got tired of washing daily to get the look i really wanted so now im relaxed.

I always get stared down when I've bought CD hair products in the past (cause well. I'm 'white') but for my hair (thick and curly) and my sisters (kinky like a black persons) their stuff was always nice and nurturing.

Curly hair products make me wish I had curly hair! They all sound amazing with their incredible ingredients and promises of shiny, frizz free bouncy hair.Unfortuantely with my thin, oily and lank straight hair, if I used one my hair would be a big greasy mess within hours.Oh a girl can dream!
I second you nicollback! I wish I had naturally curly hair and have all those wonderful pampering products work their magic on me!
I also wash my hair 2-3 times during the week, just last evening I read about "Mixed-Chicks" hair products my hair is very curly and rather dry. I have a small arsenal of hair products ranging from Ouidad to White Rain.I usually let my hair dry naturally, sometimes I will do a total comb out and straighten my hair (it takes me an hour) my husband loves it when I do that. I am going to order some of the products from Mixed Chicks, thanks for the review MissRo!
Oh my God! I am the Oklahoma City Beauty Examiner for Examiner.com, and I've been trying to get in touch with the ladies over at Mixed Chicks to try their products. I'm doing a series right now on curly hair, because I'm a naturally curly girl. I am in love with Hair Rules, DevaCurl, and Kinky-Curly products. So far every single product in these lines have been amazing, and smell delicious. I hope the Mixed Chicks pr people get back to me because I'm dying to try their products too.

Thanks for this review! I have very thick naturally curly hair. When I wear it curly, I get big spirals- and a lot of frizz, if I'm not careful!I wish I could blow dry my hair straight, but that is not going to happen. I end up with a poofy, frizzy mess. I have to flat iron it too. Its like a 45 minute process but it lasts for at least 3-4 days. I love this Redkin shine serum oil thing (sorry, I'm too lazy to get up & check the name!) When its curly, I like using a styling cream from Garnier. Its in a green tub and only costs about 3 bucks. It helps with the frizz & defines my curls without getting crunchy (a pet peeve of mine)I'm definately going to check out this line, I love the difference good shampoo and conditioner make on my hair.=)
yea.... So I wanted to chick out their product line and contact them for samples, and I wasnt on megs at the moment so I just typed in mixedchicks.complease dont do that.... lolthat is NOT the site...mixedchicks.net IS the site lol I ended up visiting some porn....

I'd like to try the Mixed Chicks products but I'm not crazy about silicone products on my hair. Besides, I'm still really happy with Jessicurl. I swear it's the best line I've ever used. Too Shea conditioner is something I'll use forever. And I also like the cleansing cream, deep treatment, and the styling products. Ouidad is good too, but the Island Fantasy fragrance in Jessicurl's products makes me very happy. Plus I love supporting a small business. I have tried just about every product made for curly hair! Blow drying is usually a mistake because a little humidity causes all your work to be in vain. And I definitely am on board with washing my hair only twice a week. Rinsing on the other days works just fine. Right now, my hair is probably in the best condition ever. As Jessica says: You have the right to remain curly!

I wash my hair every three days or so, just so I don't strip it of any of the natural oils. And I agree with combing conditioner through your hair - it really works! : ]
The strangest thing happen with my last haircut. I went to Toni & Guy and I had naturally curly hair when I arrived, but after he cut it all my curls were gone. I don't know what he did. I still have a few poopsie curls around the perimeter, but the rest is wavy to straight. I lost a little over half my hair in 2005, so I had it cut real short back then. When it started growing it was really curly, like afro curly. I wore a hat during that stage. As it got longer, I had these beautiful curls (not too tight or too loose). Now they are gone. Very sad. When I did have curly hair I didn't blow dry I just let it dry naturally. I would use Biosilk or Chi to smooth wild hairs. Before I knew my curls were gone, the dude from Toni & Guy sold me a bottle of "Let It Be" leave in conditioner for $22.00. I didn't ask how much it was and I didn't realize how much it was till I got home. Insane!!! I would have returned it, but I was too upset about my missing curls. I think I will put it in a nice gift basket with cosmetics, and other recommended products from here for my nieces 17th birthday. I love making gift baskets. Thanks MissRo!

I've had this happen too. I had super curly hair going in to a cut and came out with much looser curls that were closer to waves. It has a lot to do with the cut. Lorraine Massey believes in where you cut in the curl pattern makes a difference. Like if you cut it in a specific part, you can take the curl out. I can't really explain it, you can look it up in her book Curly Girl (not trying to plug it, I got everything I needed from it in one read at the library). Sounds to me like the hair got cut in a bad place. I think curly hair can get traumatized. Really I do. Curly girls are curly by nature of DNA, so it's impossible to change that, so I don't think your curls are gone, just kinda hiding. Just treat your hair really nicely, condition it and don't brush. I don't know how you style your hair or you drying technique, but check out jessicurl.com for a demonstration of "plopping" or "plunking" to dry the hair to emphasize the curl. And of course scrunch if you like to scrunch. And think curly thoughts. ;)
Rhinarae, I go to the gym daily and sweat a lot, but I only wash my frizzy hair twice a week. I use dry shampoo, which absorbs any excess oil and my hair never looks dirty at all. I love Bumble and Bumble, but there are several others that are good.
