TO STRAIGHTEN OR NOT TO STRAIGHTEN...THAT IS THE QUESTION
Sweetassgal here contemplating a difficult and rather quizzical quandary. As you all have seen on Tuesday's post I recently had a hair makeover. I love it...I really do. But it has presented me with somewhat of a challenge to both my identity and to be frank to my feelings as a woman. To give you some background I grew up in the 80's with STICK straight FLAT hair. It took me HOURS to achieve the curl, volume and height necessary to survive in the age of hairspray and bangs. I finally gave up and went au naturale when I was 17. You can't IMAGINE the looks I got when I came to school that first day with straight natural hair and not a hint of hairspray in my bangs. I was an alien and was teased mercilessly!
Now in my thirties my hair transformed into a mass of natural curls and super volume. GREAT! Just in time for the flat iron pin straight hair look to hit it's height. Is it just me or can I just NEVER get it right hair-wise? Being the stubborn trend bucker that I am with my hair (this is the identity part I referred to) I again embraced its natural state and let the curls fly in the face of my flat tressed opposition. However, feeling the need for a change I went for the big makeover and came out with a softer color and what else...STRAIGHT HAIR!
Straight hair for me suddenly takes maintenance. LOTS of it. I have now experienced the torturous time consuming task of the BLOW OUT. Ouch...my arms hurt! But I can't stop there. After the 20 minute blow out there is another 20 minutes of FLAT IRONING and smoothing. Holy hell! I've haven't spent 40 minutes on my hair at one time since High School! This is work and I'm here to tell you I won't be doing it every time I do my hair which puts me back to going the natural route occasionally too. Here comes the hurt feelings part.
I never realized how culturally adverse we are to letting people just wear their hair naturally. I can't even begin to tell you how many comments I've received (among many nice ones as well) about how glad people are to see me get "rid" of "that curly hair". Like I've been walking around looking like a great big Carrot Top goofball freak show for the last year. Seriously...think about it. EVERY time you see a makeover on TV with someone who has curly hair what is the FIRST thing they do? Straighten it, rather than showing them how to make their curls look nicer or enhance their natural beauty...they just STRAIGHTEN it. The signal...you aren't beautiful unless your hair is straight and silky shiny. Gag.
This morning I go to read my Yahoo news of the day (love that) and there is an article on "Why Michelle Obama's Hair Matters" talking all about the obsession that we have over her straight hair. How does she do it? What does she use? How would we feel as a nation if she wore her naturally tightly coiled hair? Is the White House ready for an afro? Is she conforming to "Anglo" definitions of beauty to play it safe? Is this an affront to her black heritage? I was floored. They even mention that African Americans who wear their hair naturally project an almost militant, subversive image to the world. WOW! I never knew curly hair packed SO much power. It even goes on to say they have interviewed black women who purposefully straighten their curly hair for job interviews so they don't appear non-conformist. I find this utterly fascinating while equally infuriating and would personally like to apologize to all African American women who feel they have to conform to Anglo standards of beauty just to fit in. I think black women are beautiful and regal and have NO reason to "black-down" their look.
Moral of the story...it's a great big world out there with LOTS of different kinds of people and ALL kinds of hair. If everyone had to conform to ONE standard of beauty it would be one dull planet. Kind of like Friday night cocktails at the local trendy preppy bar. DULL, DULL, DULL. All the same kind of boring vanilla people, wearing their boring vanilla clothes, with their boring vanilla hairstyle, drinking a boring vanilla vodka. That's about the time I like to roll in with my curls flying about, wearing the funkiest Fire Engine Red outfit I have and saddling up to the bar to order a Double Crown on the rocks. Now that'll put some curls on your head!!!
Ever been curl shamed or flat hair mortified from trying to "fit in" to a standard? You're not alone sista' so feel free to speak up. The beauty of Meg's is there IS NO standard. We are all beautiful from the silken haired straighties to the kinkiest of curlies and any extreme in between! GLAM ON!!!!

Oh don't you just love how God places you in the wrong era? I was born in the 80's but grew up in early 90's, just as the skinny jean stick straight hair was coming into style. I have insane curls. I would've rocked the 80's for sure! The first 5 years of my life I rocked the crazy curls. Then I turned 6 and my mom decided it was time for me to change to stick straight hair. That was torture! I couldn't sit still long enough. I love 80's nights because it means I don't have to dry my hair for 30 minutes followed by the flat iron (thank God for Ginalli. I swear by that flat iron!). I also love living by the ocean. People at the beach don't care if your hair is crazy. But I'm probably moving to Vegas again next year...hence the owning of a flat iron. And my curls kinda make me look like a mental patient if wind blown so for interviews it always MUST be straight.
HAHA love it sweetassgal..I used to relax my hair to make it easier to comb and style in middle and part of high school, but when someone made a nasty comment about me trying to be white when I wore my hair straight I stopped relaxing my hair, chopped the relaxed bits off, and started wearing my hair natural. Suprisingly because I was so young when I started relaxing my hair hadn't fully developed and it is now gorgeously natural and perfectly curly. My hair is the envy of all my friends although I do have those days when I which my hair was straight..but I honestly wouldn't trade it for the world!

I LOVE that! Not the nasty comment part but you embracing your natural beauty. This is SO what I'm talking about. However, if you want to straighten it for you to shake things up...don't ever let anyone tell you it's trying to be white. That's just ridiculous! It's just hair and we can wear it any way we want!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
Thanks Angie I'm glad I grew a pair and did it too..lol. I am learning little by little not to let what people think bother me, although I do care!

Oh I want curly hair SO badly!!! Hopefully my hair goes curly when I turn 30. I don't know why people wouldn't like curly hair. I think it shows individuality and creativity. I find black hair fascinating. I don't know why they feel they need to change it. And I think black skin is beautiful. The blacker the better. There basically are no black people where I live. Everytime I see a black person I just stare. There was a black guy at Applebees today, he was VERY good looking ;)
My natural hair is dead straight flat Chinese hair, but it's very very thin. I always had easy to manage regular hair, so I never really had to conform to a certain style. However, I chopped off my hair some time ago (like 2 years or something like that), and I met a guy who likes girls with LONG hair. Although I didnt conform to a social standard, I felt really bad because he always talked about how he loved my long hair and doesnt know why id cut it off, and to let it grow back. So I understand that feeling of wanting your hair to look like something it just cant (or at least will take yaers to get)
My sister had curly hair as a kid and I was SO ENVIOUS. As she hit puberty, her hair got straight like mine. I always hoped as I got older my hair would do the opposite and get curly...but it never happened. It's just getting GREY
Interesting topic, Angie! I've had similar experiences. My hair is crazy curly. Whenever I've allowed a stylist to blow it out straight, it looks so nice and shiny - and so many people will tell me how much better it looks. Humpfff! Like I looked like a poodle every other day??? I think there's a better way to compliment someone rather than to imply that their natural look is ugly. So anyway, while I love how shiny my hair is when straight -- I am just not able to make the time commitment to try and keep it that way. And the in-between look is really not very attractive. So, I'm thinking that my hair will stay curly. As Jessicurl says: "You have the right to remain curly!"And one more thing: Michelle Obama is beautiful and should be able to wear her hair any way she likes! I don't know why it's even an issue. Rock your curls, Angie! You look beautiful either way.

i had dead set straight hair and it really annoys me for it's lack of volumn, hence i envyyyy girls who have "puffy" hair!I tried curling my hair onces with sponge balls i bought from ebay.. and it just turned out super weird, it wasn't to fit in with social groups, i guess i wanted to experiment a little. Ever since my sponge balls are locked away and never to be seen. my bf likes my hair long and straight.. but i'm notorious for cutting my hair really short during summer and grow it out to warm my ears during winter.

I had a perm a few years back in the hope of having beautiful, natural looking curls like yours- it didnt work it just looked frizzy or wet (where i would use so much produc to try to stop the frizz!!!) but your curls are stunning! wear your hair however you want, not how you think everyone else wants!
I think we all want what we don't have or can't get!I have stick straight, thin, flat hair. It doesn't need to be straightened as it does it itself. For all my life I would LOVE to have curly hair. Not tight ringlets, but soft cascading waves. I even even contimplated the dreaded perm in order to gain such waves. But alas, my hairdresser wouldn't do it because my hair is so pathetic it wouldn't even hold the perm! I ended up cutting my hair really short just so I wouldn't have to deal with my pathetic long hair.Sweetasgal - I think you look fantastic either way - if you have the extra time & want to straighten then do! But if you don't, be proud of your curly hair!! :)
Sweetassgal this is the perfect example of a 110% awesome, awe-inspiring, educational and absolutely thought-provoking Meg's Makeup article I've been appreciating since I joined. You've not only inspired me to continue rocking my naturally wavy and kinky natural hair some days of the week when I just can't do the straightening and blow-drying, you've also got me thinking about Michelle Obama and African American women in general and how they are still persecuted - and also linking that to other ethnic groups and natural hair-types. /Stands up and claps. Thank you so much, I adore you and your words. : ]
i totally know how you feel. I have naturally wavy to curly hair and for years i've spent time how to acheive the perfect straight and flat hair that is supposedly the new modern approach in fashion. Lately, i've tried to changed up my look. Since I have thin hair, I decided to cut my nearly waist length hair to around above shoulder length and got tons of layers. Then i just added volume mousse and used a barrel comb to try my hair. Instead of using harsh chemicals and serums with several different straighteners, I now have a more natural look. I receive so many more compliments and feel so much more sophisticated. Since everybody is different, I think it's really nice to see everybody with different hair styles....otherwise we'd all look the same :(
Oh my god, I can't tell you how many times my dad told me to "brush that rat's nest on your head!" when I was younger. It just looked unkempt to him. (I started off with straight hair with a flip at the ends and started getting curly hair about 3rd grade.) So I would brush it (it HURT ripping through all the twists!) and it would get flat to my scalp at the root and then poof out around my ears. That was not a good look. Curly hair has character. I like that about it. And nobody has the same curly hair - which amazes me. Different textures, different curl patterns, different degrees of twist... it's really kinda fascinating. Curls and waves are kinda undone and loose and unrestrained and sort of sexual - know what I mean? And I think that the unrestrained thing is what people don't like. Making yourself have straight hair is just another way of conforming to what society deems acceptable. Something like 65% percent of people have curly or wavy hair. So why are curly haired people made to feel like they don't fit in and should change? It's the straight haired people who are the weirdos! (<-I'm kidding here.) I don't get the obsession with straight hair, I really don't. Why not embrace and work with what you've got? If you're straight, be straight and if you're curly, be curly and if you're wavy, be wavy. And personally, I'd rather Michelle Obama have a little more movement in her hair. If she wants to keep it straight to appease people or look more "White" House appropriate then fine, but that flattened, ironed, motionless hair doesn't look good IMO. I want a little more oomph. But then, what do I know about black hair? It may not be possible.
Well don't I feel like an idiot. I didn't take a good look at the picture. She's altered her hair from what I remembered. It has a ton more volume and body now. Just pay no mind to the last paragraph.
with no styling, i have really thick wavy hair. i like my hair nice and straight so i pretty much always use a flat iron. however, i do not like spending so much time blow drying and then flat ironing it. i will try putting bit of serum in my hair and wear it wavy soon! it's nice to change things up a bit.

i used to have curly hair when i was a kid but grew out of it. now i have straight hair. of course, my hair tends to be flippy after blow drying so i have to flat iron it. when i was a teen i wanted to have a perm so badly. but when i curled my hair with a curling iron i found out that it does not suit me :( maybe i'll try a wavy look when my hair is longer.
I have long, "fine thick" (fine in texture, but it's dense and there's a lot of it), straighter-than-George-Clooney hair. I've tried every way to get it to just curl even a little bit over the years, but to no avail. BUT! I just discovered Curlformers and I am in love because they WORK!!! Wearing my hair curly is just something I do to change it up, but I do realize that many people would consider me lucky for having such naturally straight hair--I know the grass is always greener on the other side. I'm totally with you on the black-hair-is-beautiful front. I watched a Tyra episode a few weeks ago with African American women discussing "good hair" and it was really interesting. I happen to think that a natural, well maintained afro looks freakin' amazing...It's a shame that there is so much pressure to spend so much time and money on straightening and relaxing that natural texture.
I think I saw that episode! It was really eye opening. All the agony that they go through (perms, braids, wigs, weaves) to get "good" hair. Tyra interviewed all these mothers and discussed their different ways on how they cared for their child's hair. Like one put it in the braids, one kept it short and one mother permed her daughter's hair. The little girl was like 4 and she was getting slathered in chemicals to straighten her hair so she would have pretty hair. I thought that was ridiculous. Oh, did you see the one adorable little black girl put on the Hannah Montana wig so she could be "pretty"? Nearly broke my heart. I totally agree with you on the afro looking amazing. I wish I could get an "east/west" direction like that going in my hair, but all I get is "north/south."
Wasn't it crazy?! Those little tiny girls having to deal with that--I felt so bad for them.
I've had straight asian hair my whole life and I would loooove to have curly hair! At camp one time, my roommate had the most gorgeous red curls, and she would flat iron it every week. In my opinion, after she straightened it her hair just looked like a big dry frizzy nest. I hope she realizes that her curls are beautiful and she doesn't need to try and fit in with the rest of us straight haired girls!
I *WISH* I had lovely curly hair! I have some sort of frizzy but oily monstrosity that is neither curly nor straight, and it just breaks my heart when my curly-haired friends straighten theirs. I wish everyone (me included) could just embrace there hair, no matter what it looks like! That goes for black women as well..if ya got curly kinky hair, flaunt it!
I have wavy hair. Not pretty wavy hair--the kind of wavy hair that looks like it's half-@ssing it and isn't wavy enough to be truly wavy, nor is it straight enough to be straight. In middle school I braided it almost every night in like 20 little braids so that it would look "crimped". Then I tried a more natural look in terms of body but I dyed it half a dozen colors. I sometimes blowdried it straight, and sometimes threw tons of product in it to get beachy hair. Then I chemically straightened it and LOVED IT-- it was so much less work than I had ever experienced with my hair. I could shower, and walk out the door, and it would dry and look straight! Hair is such a trend. It's all about finding what you like, and what hair style works best for you as an individual, in my opinion. There are definite cultural influences (oh my goodness, I didn't realize how many Vietnamese people CHEMICALLY STRAIGHTEN THEIR HAIR! I thought they all had stick straight hair! Well, they don't, and the ones who don't feel a lot of pressure to have stick straight hair).

Sometimes people need to learn to accept people for who they are. As women, we should learn to work with what we are given rather than always following fads.

Boy do I love this topic. I was born with a slight wave in my hair. Medium thick, light brown. I even got a perm in 3rd grade because it was the thing to do! Well that perm sure was PERM(ANENT)! It never went back. Got thicker and darker too through the pubescent years. Then I started fighting with it at around age 16....my friend had even coarser, kinkier hair and found "the guy" to relax it. We were in Philly, he was in NYC...my mom schlepped me there and paid the $75 bucks (circa 91) for the relaxer. That price went up and up by the way, before Haime Munoz (has his own line of products in drugstores now) went big time. I even schlepped there once after I had moved to AZ for grad school. But what a pain to maintain...the blow out the flat iron...it took forever. If I worked out, the roots went curly. Ugh.I got lazy a few times in AZ and let my hair air dry (with product of course). The love of my life at that point (who of course didn't know I loved him) went a little cuckoo over my curls. "You look so sexy", "I love that hair", etc. Well that was enough (at 23 mind you) to re-embrace those curls! I found that I got more compliments (and can say now that I still do) on my hair then sometimes I can believe. Yes its a pain in the arse (so was straightening!!!) and uses a TON of product, but its me and its mine and I love 'em!
I have curly hair and as long as I condition it well and leave it alone it will dry really nice into spirals, but if I'm outside in the wind or it's raining I might as well put it in a ponytail and grab a hat because disaster is inevitable. That's when I start wishing I had straight hair.
UGH you're telling me.My hair is almost exactly like yours. I wish someone would tell me how to make my curls prettier. I... "like" them... but i just cant do it sometime. Today was a hairspray the hell out of it only to pull it back into a pony tail day.hah ...i straighten my hair sometime but like you said time consuming!!i think they are tottally blowing out of proportion the michelle obama hair...i mean seriously... its her hair, shell do what she wants with it. and i really like her hair its got tons of volume! lolgood luck. I think the easiest thing to do is leave the straightening for special events, days out with friends, trips ect.Wear it culry all those other days.Lol you didnt get rid of those curls. theyre still there. and there plenty of people who tell me everyday they wish they had my curls... and im like home dog... no you dont.

Great topic, sweetass girl! By the way your hair looks adorable! The big question? To straighten or go curly? When I hit 30 I found a hairdresser who's curls one would do anything for. Absolutely gorgeous. Her trick...never comb it. Leave it and find good product that works for you and holds the curl together. I rocked that look for 5 years embracing my years and accepting what I did have...which was a full head of dry wavy curly hair ( too much!) I was proud as I put the straightener away and now could be stranded on a desert island. ( My Joico Molder) was all I needed! Fast forward, age 35, pregnant withnumber 3. Wanted a change. No curly, straight hair for me. Give me something different I said, "cut it all off." Meg Ryan cute and sassy. I drove home singing at the top of my lungs and felt so liberated! Problem was as my tummy grew my hair was grew awful. To much work!! Its wasn't wash and go, try lots of work, then go. Cute bendy pins were a staple. When my hair finally grew I bought myself a Hai Iron and off to straighten again. Now with three kids. Yikes, where to find the time. Now I straighten and do the switcheroo looks. Two days straight, third day half up. Fourth day, pony. 5th day ( I know it sounds gross) and I do shower but forget the time on my hair! The lovely Hair Band, I own one in every colour! Artcandy

Isn't funny how we always want what we haven't got !!! I have curly hair and want straight and all the ladies I know with straight hair want curly, I straighten my hair as I feel it's way more work to have it curly !!!When my hair is curly I can't brush it I can't run my fingers through it cause both of these make my hair go frizzy :-( so I prefer to have it straight as it's quick and easy in the morning for the school run I really don't care what hair style is in fashion either I just have my hair how I like it same with clothes really :-)
Girlfriends, this is something good that comes with age: just go with what you feel like. If my hair looks poofy, I wear it poofy. If it's stick straight, I go with stick straight. I find that people respond to me and not to my hair, and I think it's because I really don't worry about it. When I'm good with it, they're good with it.
Moema....always a Mom first
Awesome topic! My hair is semi wavy, which means some of it's wavy and some of it is just unsure about it's true state of being. If I were to let it air dry it would be kinda flat and semi-wavy and I always TRY to give it a go and leave it that way but every single time, I just think it looks so frizzy and un-sleek ON ME so invariably I will go through the L O N G process of drying it with my blow dryer using a huge round brush, then I will top it off by straightening it even more with my flat iron. I detest this process and my arm really has a nice muscle on it just from doing this! Drying the back of my hair is my personal detestation area. It takes SO long and I have to have mirrors available to even see the back as I dry it...I so wish I had someone else to dry the back of my hair! The sides and front I can do dry fairly fast...but the back...it's like it's extra EXTRA thick back there! This is insane that I do this, but the result always makes me feel more professional and I just really enjoy the final result! This is way too much work and time though so this is yet another reason why I only wash my hair every other day. My husband has a shaved head and he absolutely cannot imaging doing all the work that I do to have my hair look smooth but on the other hand, he really likes it too! LOL! Although he says he likes me however I am. That's a good man! He's far more accepting of my hair looks than I am!!!! I really love what a good flat iron can do to the look of my hair!
Jeanasina!
Your article kind of reminds me of a shirt I've seen: You're unique, just like everyone else! I was born with naturally curly hair. I like to tell people I had "clown" hair growing up, because it was cut short and it was just that curly. It's tamed down a bit, but it's definately still curly. My only reason for not wearing it straight more often is because I hate spending time on my hair and hate all the work involved. Luckily I don't feel pressure to have straight hair all the time just because it's "in." I've finally figured out how to make my hair look presentable at least in it's natural state, with the right cocktail of hair products.

My hair is dead straight! I long for some natural wavy curls ... I always have...
What was that thing about eating the crust of your bread?? Lol
i have very straight hair !!! and sometimes i like to have curly hair for party ...
I spent my teen years crying that I didn't have straight hair. I had hair down to my bum and I spent ALOT of time blowdrying and using the flatiron. I sometimes withed my hair was curly. (Ok, my hair isn't curly either...it's confused.) My hair has coil-like curls on the underside and straight/ lightly wavy hair on top. Since I can't leave it alone, without looking like a freakshow, I either have to use lots of products to up the curl or straighten it, which takes lots of time. I wish we could be happy with who we are (and not have people make fun of us). :(

Same here sweetie so i know how you feel .....:-(
I have to flat iron my hair Just to let it lay down.. I have HUGE frizzy hair .. its not curly but its not completely wavy either iam stuck in the middle with a mess! What i do so it doesnt take soo long is let my hair air dry like over night or whatever and battle it in the morning.. than way you not working your arms so much!
Oh yes -- I had on-trend hair for about half a minute somewhere in the 90's, where my just-turning-curly hair gave me the same effect other girls permed to get. But of course, I preferred it straight most of the time anyway. Now curls are not as fashionable and I gave up straightening when I realized how much prettier it looked curly and how easy the upkeep was, comparatively. The only thing I'd like is to find a decently affordable stylist who knows how to cut curly hair - I've cut my own for years now and I can manage light layers and trims, but that's about it.
my grandma and mom have curly hair. i managed to end up with wavy frizzy hair. I straightened it for years until split ends appeared. Now, i dont really do much about it. My hair is not that wavy anymore, but i must admit i miss it. I love seeing people with curls, they look unique :)
I can't believe it, because I just had a similar thought this morning! After my hair-washing-conditioning-treatment spraying *uah* routine I feel so lucky to be "punished" every other morning with the blowout-marathon, as I call it. That's the time I wish I had at least 4 arms, medusa-like, so I could give them a rest while I hold this darn blowdryer for approx. 25-30 minutes. It appears longer to me at least. After this I'm not done of course, because if I was, I'd be so happy and wouldn't dare to complain;-). No, it's flat-iron time - yipee!! I don't think I spend over 10 minutes there, because my hair is already in a straight texture. Being the perfectionist I am or at least try to be, my hair has to be pin-straight. Plus, it gives it more shine and makes it look healthier. Uh....sometimes I wish I could just skip the blow-out and wake up with the same pin-straight mane. Destiny, I guess.
Make up your beauty-full mind...www.myspace.com/blackdivaworld
i have curly hair and i really like it, but i just cant work around the frizz (mostly because i have NO frizz control products). SO i end up straightening my hair EVERY morning. i mean before when i had a normal hairstraightener, i kept getting split ends and such from straightening it so much but since i got this new hairstraightener, i have not at all ever seen one split end or any damage, the straightener heats up so fast and does its job in 15 minutes TOPS and my hair is full so 15 minutes is Great ( and this is me without using any conditionare). After straightening my hair goes so straight but without losing its shape, you can still make it have volume AND be very straight at the same time. My hairstraightener is called herstyler, i have the version called "black" and since i got this, (2 yrs ago) I have not seen my natural hair. seriously.http://www.herstyler.com/
"Rock On" stylemama!! I know exactly what you talking about! In the 70's my curly hair was a cross for me to bear...I did everything I could to try and make it "straight" I begged my mother to let me get my hair chemically straightened, she finally relented...my hair looked awful afterwards! I was just a "tween" and so obsessed with my looks and now I was really mortified! It was so important to fit in and look like the other girls,I was a little chubby, curly hair and very shy and in my eyes they were all slim, long straight hair and very outgoing...AGHhhh it make me cringe to think back to those days. But now I am happy, confident and love my curly hair and my curves!!
i think all girls with straight hair want curly hair and vice versa.. i would love curly hair but i can just use a curling iron. Im not willing to put my hair through that process.
Go with the flow. You can mix it up sometimes ;p
Great piece Angie! I have very naturally curly hair and I am lazy! I have never felt the need to straighten my hair. It takes too long! I do not have the time. And I really don't ever blow dry either. My hair looks horrible when I do. I am all natural! For me that is the best option. But you are so right that society seems to have a standard of overall beauty that does not include curls or fro! I say screw society and let's proudly sport our curls, fros, or whatever we have! We are all beautiful!!
I kind of have the best of both worlds. My hair is wavy. Usually, most days, I put some kind of wave enhancing spray in it, air dry, and go. It's sometimes on the frizzy side, but I don't really care all that much most days. My hair is really easy to straighten and it also holds curl well, so I'm pretty lucky.
my hair is naturally curly but sometimes i just want straight hair so i straighten it
I must tell you that i have curly hair and have only straightened it once (bc the hair dresser just did it)....needless to say she was straightening whilst telling me what beautiful hair i have. I had a friend who was always asking me if she could straighten my hair and then she went out and got a perm---MORAL of the story--we always want what we don't have. Blue eyes want brownBrown eyes want greenetc....I have my curly hair but....wouldn't change it for the world (maybe make it a bit thicker and give me back my curls from my teen years)...LOLEmbrace what you have--it's what makes us all unique and different :)
I have not straightnened my hair all summer, it has been unusually hot and humid where I live, and it takes me an hour to blow dry, and another 30-40 minutes to flatiron. If i am really careful, I can get 4 days out of it, but it requires a lot of planning around the hair routine. My curls are pretty unruly, but I've gotten used to not spending so much time on my hair. I imagine that once the weather gets cooler, as long as we don't hit a rainy spell, I will go back to straightening. My stylist tells me that your hair changes texture every 7 years, and it does seem to be losing some curl lately. There is so much of it, though, it will always be a time-consuming task.
I totally agree with Philogène we want what we don't have...My hair is straight like VERY it couldn't be more staright and...of course..I hate it...I would kill to have Julia Roberts's hair in "Pretty Woman" ( not the blonde wigs lol) curly savage...and of course my hair is the perfect opposite !!!
