"SOLD ONLY IN PROFESSIONAL SALONS" OR RISK HEAD FUNGUS? GREAT HAIR EXPIRATION INFO!

Punkeydew sent me a great question on the "Expiration" front regarding haircare that claims it is only good sold through a salon. I didn't have an answer but I forwarded the question to the amazing Marco Pelusi!
He cleared the misconceptions right up for us! Enjoy!
QUESTION:
Hey Meg! I just had an idea for a blog post that would be great! Reading the post on expirations led me to start thinking about it. Salon products that are sold in other stores like walmart, safeway, ect. They actually say "Only sold in professional salons" Right on the back. I buy my bedhead and pureology from safeway most the time. I asked my hairdresser about it before and she got very defensive, telling me those products can't be trusted and they are full of fungus that can give me scapl infections!? Of course the salon is biased. So it would be great to hear it from a more unbiased source. Would LOVE to hear the results. Thanks! Punkeydew
ANSWER:
Ciao Punkydew! What a valid and important issue you bring to our attention, indeed. The general issue that might be occurring here is usually called 'diversion'. Again, it's in general terms. I'm unable to speak specifically regarding stores and the specific product they carry. But generally speaking, diversion refers to finding products at stores that normally would not be allowed to, nor or under contract to, nor be given permission to sell a particular haircare brand. Diversion is an issue that occurs frequently, and haircare manufacturers generally go to great lengths to see that it doesn't occur. Diversion does take away some power we as hairdressers have as professionals to recommend and educate products to our clients. Generally, it's always better to be able to purchase a product directly from your hairdresser, if possible, because hopefully, he/she received it from the manufacturer, and can literally stand behind and guarantee the quality of the product. That's why a lot of the brands state that they're sold only in salons -- right on the packaging. However, it's entirely possible that the brands you buy at these discount stores are the same formulas, and the same exact products. The very best thing to do would be to contact the haircare company, let them know where you purchased the product, and ask them their thoughts on its quality from that particular store -- to ensure your safety and peace of mind. The company contact info should be on the back of the bottle. Just as one example, at a larger discount store, the quality control may not be there. You may not know how long the product has been sitting on the shelf, nor do you know where it came from. However, on the other hand, I don't think you can assume that all products found in those stores are unsafe. I doubt that's true. But if you are uncertain at all, call the manufacturer and ask them! That's their job! The answer is somewhere in the 'middle'. The products are probably ok, but it's best to check to be sure. I hope this provides some assistance to you! At least you now have a bit more awareness about what might be really going on. Grazie, Marco www.marcopelusi.com
Who buys their salon shampoos from um, not a salon? Have you ever had an issue from doing it?

Ah Thank you! That was a very quick response!!I used to live on a navy base and the salon there had discounted hair products but since I do not anymore I have been buying my salon products elsewhere. I admit the rant from my hairdresser did scare me a little, but tight money is tight money you can't stretch it too far! I havnt so far ran into any problems with them. I have used the actual salon bought version of most of them so In my mind I mentally compare them.Great tip on contacting the supplier I never really thought to do that. :D im gonna give them a ring tomorrow! Thanks again!

Wow thats a little crazy. I don't buy any of my hair products from my hairdresser. However with the amount of preservatives that are in these products I really don't worry about them going bad.
Thanks Marco, brilliant and very fair answer! This is a great topic and I do believe in "loyalty" to a salon overall...however sometimes, with the availability of products at "Ulta",and "Trade Secret" and such, its really hard not to toss hair-care into the basket as well for the "points" they reward! I think calling is a great idea...keeps both "sides" on their toes if we as consumers stay sharp and informed as well! :)
i read about that. how companies illegally carry 'professional use only' products. as long as it doesnt appear tampered w/ i'll take my chances at the discount rate. i wouldnt purchase a banged up or dusty bottle and i know those are the only ways to tell if a product is old.
I don't mind buying my products from a non-salon. I used to work in a hair salon, and I know that both the owners and hairdressers (and even me as the receptionist) made a LOT of commission on the sale of just one bottle of shampoo. So I'd rather keep that 50% for myself. Also! That Paul Mitchell guy's campaign against gray market salon products was REALLY ANNOYING. Especially since he once bragged about having more money than Donald Trump, I felt he was just being greedy. Do you know he owns Patron tequila?
Oh Marco, thankyou for this excellent piece of information! If I see any of my exclusive hair-care in any discount stores I'll be sure to pass on the information to the company themselves. I'm sure if I were in their position I'd be really upset that my brand was being discounted as well, and that people weren't getting the quality advice that's required for a hair-dresser only brand.Good to know there's no real chance of hair fungus, but I don't think I would want to run the risk anyway. :P
Most product nowadays have an expiration date. I know my shampoo does.
Marco, not only do you take care of all of us at Megsmakeup, but you do so with grace, style and wisdom. Very impressive, Thank You!
I got some really nice Marc Anthony salon shampoos and conditioners. My dad brought them home for me because he's a locksmith and he does lock jobs for almost every type of business. Im not sure whether the guy was a hair dresser, or sold salon products, but I didnt question where they came from. I was just happy to have more crap to try! They worked great, and I didnt question the quality. Maybe I should have, but luckily they worked well on me.
I've wondered about this too. I've also heard that there is a risk that the products may be counterfeit. To me, it sounds like a lot more trouble to counterfeit a product than it would be to "divert" (read: steal) it. Consumers should definitely use caution though in buying salon products for cheaper at TJ Maxx or CVS, etc. than you would pay in the salon. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" and if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. I personally wouldn't care about buying a salon product from a drugstore, but I wonder why the drugstore can even sell it. If this is supposed to be a salon-exclusive product - where is the lawsuit?
I do buy some "salon" products from the grocery store (Safeway) and I have never had a problem...
LOL, this post actually made me laugh out loud, as I never heard of scalp fungus caused by expired salon products before;-)). Probably, what your stylist meant, punkeydew, is that only a salon guarantees you 100% authentic products that are not tampered or thinned anyhow. This aside, is there really an expiration date on shampoos and haircare, I wonder...?

I pretty much always buy my Paul Mitchell hair care at my beauty supply store. Sometimes I buy it at Nordstrom Rack. It has always been really good and nothing has been different about it from store to store. I am soo addicted to the whole Super Skinny line. I buy big bottles from the beauty supply store and refill my shower size bottles. I would never be able to afford to buy a new small bottle at the salon every time. So far so good.....knock on wood.

thanks for bringing this up! i had never thought abot it before! i always buy my salon products from a discount shop, never a salon! :-{
I've previously bought a couple of 'salon' items from other stores, but they weren't discounted and I am 100% sure they are the real deal. Seeing as I don't buy or use salon products at the moment, I am not to worried but I would definately try to source my salon items from the actual hairdresser in the future :)
Marco that was an amazinly honest and unbiased answer-I usually buy kerstase from the salon-cant seem to find it anywhere else anyway-so no choice in the matter.

I buy a lot of "salon only" products at TJ Maxx and Marshalls and have never had a problem. I never really though of them as being any different at all then the actual products sold in salons.
I never buy my salon products at a salon. Almost always I'll buy them at a "discount" store. I've never had any issues and I've had good results. I think some people that work in salons get defensive about this topic because it really is all about commission. Plus, like someone else noted, these products have a ridiculous amount of preservatives in them and I'm sure for the most part, they're fine.
Thanks Marco for your response. I almost always buy my Pureology shampoo/conditioner from a salon. However, a few times I have not been able to get to the salon and have picked it up at CVS for the same price. I haven't had any problems with it, but I definitely feel more confident getting it at the salon if I can.
I used to buy salon shampoos at Walmart, etc. and never had any issues. It honestly never occurred to me to be uncomfortable at all doing that!
i always thought that organic skin and hair care expired much quicker than regular products. Maybe that could contribute to the "fungus" rumors?i know many discount stores sell expired food, so im sure they wont mind selling shampoo that is expired. I would just worry if your shampoo is 100% organic- since the "good" ingredients dont stay fresh for too long!
I buy a lot of things off of discount sites (ie beautyticket), but if you ever mention it to someone in a salon or anything they freak out tell you the same story about how it isn't the real product and people calling them asking for empty bottles (to put 'fake' products into and sell). Well... I've also bought the same things from salons and I've never ran into a problem with a product not being the same as what I bought from the salon. I'm sure that people have gotten scammed buying from discount places, but I really think 99% of the time it isn't fake products or whatever and the salon just needs to make sells (which is why they freak out when you buy a product somewhere other than them). If I had a salon it would irritate me too if my customers were buying the same exact thing I sell from somewhere else.
Thanks! I once got some Paul Mitchell products from a Marc's and they seemed to work well. But I assume its safe to buy Pantene at walmart since its not really sold at salons. And I am sure ULTA and Sephora ares safe places to get salon products since I don't go to a salon.
With how expensive some shampoo & conditioner is right now I'll take my chances purchasing them at a discount store. Paying over $40 for a bottle of shampoo or conditioner just seems ridiculous to me so if I can purchase it at a more affordable price when it's not from the manufacturer then I'm happy. I've been trying lots of new shampoos & conditioners and I've even been willing to try the more expensive brands but I haven't seen anything that makes it worthwhile to spend that extra money.
Very fair answer. I buy salon hair products from discount stores sometimes and never had a problem. I don't think I will stop unless I see a reason too. The price of these at salons are outrageous, so I will take my chances with the discount stores!
Iam a hair stylist... So I buy my shampoo from the distribator! ... And i really dont think that You are going to die if you buy your shampoo from a normal store! ... ... Although my old boss used to say that Suave caused child hood acne!! haha
Gross... Head fungus, really? Thank goodness I always look for expiration dates...Ew
I buy my hair products from a beauty supply store where the products fly off the shelves and are sometimes out of stock of the things I use. So I am happy that I don't have to worry about the length of time they stay on the shelf but scalp fungus is eewww!
;) Gloss & Gum <3
I don't see how stores like Walmart could get these products second hand. As far as I know about Walmart, they get all of their things new. Discount stores, like Big Lots, are a different story.I've bought stuff from places like Walmart with no problems.I can't afford the prices they charge at the salon for products. Student budget, and all.
I am a hair stylist, so I buy all my products directly from the distributor, and I have never tried any of the "salon" products from any where but the distributor, so I can't really say that they are the same. But salon products are super expensive and if you can save a little money, go ahead and buy it at Target or Walmart, the only issue I would say you would have to worry about is dilution of the product. I really don't think that fungus would be an issue..
Thanks for the tips Marco!Personally, I'm too afraid to purchase a Salon product at a non-salon store. Furthermore, I'm also too afraid to buy from ebay. I would rather pay full price, knowing that what I bought was real.
I have always wondered about these products and now know how to go about finding out what is truly going on with them. Thank you.
great information - def food for thought.i'm not 100% loyal to any shampoo/conditioner so buying at a salon would be dumb for me. too i put tea tree oil in all the shampoo & conditioner that makes its way into our house anyway so fungus be damned!! but i am 100% loyal to biosilk and i usually get it at sams club. it never occurred to me that it could be anything other than genuine as it was always sealed and has worked/looked/smelled the same. and honestly with money being as tight as it is i don't see myself doing anything differently.
I use good old Panteen shampoo and conditioner. It's the only kind that works right in my hair. It's very affordable! I have been tempted to buy bedhead from walmart for styling products but it is SO expensive, even there. I usually don't use products in my hair. I like it a bit natural!!

When life hands me lemons, I'm opting for lemon pound cake!
A scalp infection!? YIKES. I like the answer to this question, but I think your hairdresser was a little mellow dramatic.
I have never bought the haircare products from a salon because it's too expensive. Right now I am just using Dove shampoo and conditioner. I was using Panteen but it was not working well enough. I have been looking for a new option but money's tight.
wow thank you! i never thought about that before. and it was never brought to my attention. thanks for posting. :) i really appreciate it. i always thought that there was no difference
I too have been influenced not to purchase my products from drugstores. My hairdresser swears he would be able to tell the difference and that my hair would fall out. Ugh, not very encouraging words!.... I will definitely have to make it a point to contact the manufactuer of the products and voice my views to them. Thanks for the help!

Wow...thank you so much, Marco! The idea of scalp fungus never even crossed my mind! *Bleh...scary thought!* I have, however, thought about products sold outside of salons possibly being diluted (I am sure Sephora is safe but I mean stores such as Walmart or something along those lines). I just find it easier and more reliable to buy my products at the salon, but that's just my preference. I have never heard of anybody getting scalp fungus (!!!) but I'll stick to buying at the salon, just for peace of mind. Thanks again for your help! :)
"Never take someone for granted. Hold every person close to your heart because you might wake up one day and realize that you've lost a diamond while you were too busy collecting stones..."
I work in a beauty store, so i buy my stuff from a distributor as well.. for like 100 time's cheaper, on the back of Paul Mitchell and stuff it says, 100% not guaranteed if not sold by a salon or something like that anyway!Alot of people have different opinions some of the girls at work think the product was frozen before i don't believe that. Are grocery store's sell BedHead and Joico and Redken for pretty much the same price as a salon so i would usually just get it at a salon anyway when i had to go that route back in the day
MeLlY
although you are taking somewhat of a risk when doing so. as a hairdresser myself what really makes me upset is that they are the SAME prices if not more in these stores!!! So why not support your hairstylist you love so much and keep coming back to. (moneys tight for her too!) and if your gonna take good care of your hair and buy the products elsewhere i find it kind of rude to do so just because its easier to drop $300 at target rather then 150$ at the salon, including your color. just something to think about.
I would never have thought that the salon shampoos i've seen in supermarkets were any different to those bought through a salon, as long as the packaging is the same! definately worth checking out with the company from now on. x
Interesting topic! I have never thought about this. I used to buy products from the salon, but now I buy online. It's much cheaper and I've never had any bad experince. The online store I buy from is very popular and I feel confident that I get quality products. I always ask my hairdresser for advice on products, but I buy it all online.
Just be very careful when you buy these products at stores! Yes, I am a hairdresser in Louisville, KY. I wont hide anything about myself because I want people to know I am not lying. At some of our Walgreens, Redken and Purology are sold. I went to the shelf and sniffed the bottles and they DO NOT have the same color or smell or consistancy at our salon. SECOND, they were only $4 cheaper than the salon price. So here is my suggestion. Look at what your salon is selling them for, sniff and look at the product. Then go to your discount store, and do the same thing. For 4 to 5 bucks more, I would buy from a salon. Like many people above said, "call the number on the back of the bottles" and see what they say. I am positive, that they will tell you walgreens, kroger etc....are not authorized distributors! yes, it is illegal. I would rather you people buy "off brand" products similar to the name brand, then buy name brand at "discount" stores. i can even tell you which store brands are just as good if you ask me. (email) At least L'oreal sells products that are just as good as salon brands and they are not watered down, old etc... they are new. i would rather people use suave, pantene etc.. then see you buy professional products at discount prices.....
I wasn't aware that products sold at discount stores could be counterfeit or expired. What a scary thought! And the other day I saw a can of Big Sexy Hair at Ross and was about to go running for it, ekkk! Will definitely be more cautious next time.
