GETTING THE GREEN OUT! HOW IRONIC!

Sweetassgal's going back to blonde! That's right...after over one full year as a first time brunette I've decided to make the leap back to blondeness. I have actually really loved being brunette and so have those who know me only recently. My lifelong friends and family...not so much. Between my hairs odd transformation from stick straight to curly and the dramatic color change they've all decided it's "just not Angie". I'll miss the compliments on my blue eyes though. Not sure why but for some reason I never got noticed for my baby blues as a blonde...maybe it's just too California typical to be a blonde with blue eyes. I guess I'm cliché...who knew!?!?
What I won't miss about going back to blonde (besides the upkeep....$$$) is the dreaded Oscar the Grouch green tinge I'll get from swimming in my pool. I'm a water bug and I could NOT live in the Sacramento Valley without it. I'm in the pool almost every day and have been known to jump in around March just because I've missed it all winter long! Much to my nieces delight I'm crazy Tia Angie who does back dives into the pool and doesn't give a flip whether or not I get my coif wet. But all this time spent in the cement pond will definitely show up on my newly lightened locks. What to do fellow flaxen haired water bugs? No fear...Tia's got a solution that is simple, organic and totally easy!
First off you should understand how hair works. The shaft of your hair is covered in a layer of cuticles that overlap each other to protect the inner layers. These cuticles are opened by things like heat from your blow dryer and expose the middle layer of the hair to the copper that is present in pools which is what turns your hair green. Contrary to what people think its NOT chlorine that turns your hair...but rather the metals that are present in chlorinated pools. Many people spend money on special chelating (metal removing) shampoos to combat the problem but I'm here to tell you it's not necessary! The first step to ANY problem is always PREVENTION! A simple rinse over your hair with cold tap water will close the shaft and help keep those nasty metals from getting into your hair. A quick rinse as well when you get out will significantly reduce any damage that could be done to your hair.
Already have green hair? There's an all natural (and organic if you want it to be) recipe I found online at allnaturalbeauty.us that uses three simple ingredients to remove your broccoli colored hair. Simply mix together...
1 Organic Egg
1 Tablespoon of Organic Olive Oil
1/4 of a Peeled Organic Cucumber
Combine all ingredients in a blender, spread through your hair and leave on for 10 minutes. Do this once a month for maintenance and you can banish Oscar back to his garbage can on Sesame Street! Be gone grouch!!!
So I'll be headed to my cousin Troy Payne's salon in San Francisco on Saturday to get a completely new cut and color. I cannot tell you how excited I am to see him because he's brilliant and a color genius. One of THE top rated colorists in the City by the Bay and his salon, Elizabeth David, is located in Union Square! I'm always up for a day in the city and this time I get to do it with a BANGIN' new hairstyle. Did I just use the word bangin'? Yes...I believe I did! GLAM ON!!!!

God i remember those days.....I have med brown hair that used to get the weirdest highlight colors during the summers. I played softball so my hair at the root would be dark (bc it was under my ball cap) but at the ends it would get so light bc it was outside my cap. Then i would go swimming bc we had a pool and it would turn the light hair weird colors...i hated it--it looked like i had a bad color job done!I've also heard that putting conditioner in your hair before you go outside and into the pool will help (don't know if its true but)....good luck
"I can't remember the last time my hair was this BANGIN'!"I'm excited for you :D I've been mulling over the idea of changing up my hair lately. It's about halfway down my back and I'm keeping it that way for sure (minus an inch or two worth of split ends), but I'm thinking about going blonder (just highlights, not all over color) or red (via all over color or some carefully blended highlights). My colorist uses semi-permanent stuff on me anyway so if I went red and didn't like it, I wouldn't be red for all that long. Hmmmm.....ETA: As far as the pool vs. hair issue, when I was a kid I was on a synchronized swimming team for a few years (much, much harder and much less goofy than you'd think) and I relied on this stuff to help out my hair: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1185.htm
Hey moon I did synchro when I was younger too! The worst was they made us comb a knox gelatin and hot water mix into our hair for competitions to keep the buns intact. I think it was actually conditioning once I was finally able to get it out though!
Yup, we had to do that too. Took me over a month to get all that out sometimes, and since it was hot it kinda burned going on--ouch! Between that and fixing your nose clip on with clear nail polish, it was a sticky, ouchy situation sometimes :P
Great article, I totally agree with the eye color part. I have always had blonde hair and I died it brown 5 yrs ago, since then I ALWAYS get compliments on my eyes!
What a great and easy tip! Thanks! I doint have blond hair but I'm sure green hair is a huge pain in the butt! I just make sure I shampoo my hair when I get out of the pool so that I don't cause any damage to my hair
I always just use the purple shampoo.. But thank you for the Other option! Its harding when you are keeping up with 2 shampoos!! Welcome back to the world of blonde!!! <3 <3 <3
aww man, when I was younger and lived in florida.....YUK I remember the green hair!!!!!!!!Wish my mom woulda known about this cool recipe. and I was too in a hurry to ever rinse first!

I too die my hair dark. This is great for me to store for when I do eventually let it grow out, if ever. I bet your blue eyes looked fab with your dark hair though... Thanks for the tip Angie

I've tried to go brown a few times in the last couple of years too! it just didn't look right on me at all.Anyway, I keep the green out by coating my hair with conditioner, putting it in a braid, and voila! The heat baked it in and my hair color stayed intact. Good luck!
Swimming laps is a regular part of my fitness routine, so I log a lot of hours in the pool, marinating my heavily highlighted locks in the chlorinated brew that is pool water. The way I fend off Oscar the Grouch green, is to wet down my hair, then work some conditioner through it before putting on my swim cap. Afterward, I wash throughly with Philip Kingsley's Swimcap shampoo. So far, I'm still blonde!
I once read that tomato ketchup put on your hair and rinsed out after 15 mins takes away he green-sounds gross though-your version sounds much more pleasant.

Tomato juice works too! I had a stylist once that told me to mix some baking soda with my shampoo. I also used an anti-green shampoo/conditioner by nexxus, and my hair never turned green while I was using it. Also, make sure your hair is totally wet before going in the water.
How funny! i'm blonde and have never had a problem with my hair going green EVER! even when i shared accommodation with a whole load of other people whose blonde hair WAS turning green, mine just stayed the same colour. How odd. No helpful tips here i'm afraid. Just wanted to add my tuppence worth! :)
One lady I used to work with had a daughter who was a competitive swimmer. She had bought something with Malibu in the name and said it worked great for her daughters blonde/green hair. Then her daughter switched to a salt water pool and she said her hair was much better.
I've dark hair so I never had this problem of being green-haired either. The natural recipe sounds cool though.

I have dark brown hair and have no problem with green hair.
I <3 swimming laps! (almost) every other day in July! My hair is pretty asian (as in its black-brown) so it didn't turn green or anything. I almost got a swim cap b/c I didn't want the chlorine to ruin my hair, but just rinsed it with tap water (like you) before I went in the pool. But my cousin who is "Eurasian" died her black hair strawberry blonde and it is SO pretty. I either want to dye it dark black or blonde like hers (just not the attention that comes with being an Asian with blonde hair!) I heard about the egg thing on wikihow lol.
I have gone partial blond and the upkeep was much too much but the attention was fun... When I was in my early 20'.
You'll be gorgeous with ANY color hair! Hoping it will turn out even better than you hope for! :)
Thank you my dear! You guys will be one's of the first to see! 10 days and counting!!!!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
My family has always had a pool in the backyard and I remember my cousins and once my Aunt had green hair for our picnics, I wish I could have told them the great advice you have given here for keeping the green out.Now that I know I will always let the blondes who want to take a dip what to do first.Thanks.
I've been seriously thinking about going back to blonde too. I used to be blond, probably for 4 years, then I switched to auburn and browns. I miss having blond hair a lot. It was fun, but the upkeep was a pain. So enjoy your blondness again :) I miss mine.I don't think I've ever had any problems with my hair turning green, fortunately. Most of my swimming happens in the ocean, so no chlorine there!
I put conditioner in before and then rinse with fresh water immediately when I get out. I'm a natural brunette, so no green hair for me. I'm thinking of dying it a richer brown and getting some lights in it. I want some depth in my hair. But I'm scared it'll get screwed up. :( I just have to take the plunge!
I hope you will be showing us the before and after pictures cause I totally love makeovers !!!!! I am a brunette I wanted to become a redette ( lol) and.... it was a disaster I think I found ( I can give you her addres if you want to recomand her to a friend you don't like) the WORST Colorist EVER !!!!!! Hi! I also heard the ketchup mask works to take off that green look out of blonde hair but I never tryed it. Aparently you just mix ketchup with one egg and a little olive oil and let that sit for half an hour or so. It makes some sense since red is opposit to green so they should "fight" eachother. Not sure, though...
i have blonde hair and i use a purple l'oreal shampoo and i'ts for blond and white hair if you don't want to be very yellow lol i recomand it for everyone if you are blonde of course !!!
I've always been brunette, never blonde. I would love to make a crazy change some day but I donno... Scary scary
my son and i spend all summer swimming and we're both greenish from it. this sounds WAY WAY better and less stinky than the swimming shampoos or treatments we've used before! i'll whip a batch up tonight! thanks!!wonder if it'll work for hard water/metal deposits in the hair too? i need the shower purifier thingy.
Great article, I have brown hair so while my hair doesn't turn green in the pool, it gets a weird tinge to it. I will have to remember the running my hair through cold water beforehand.
i'm glad my hair has never turned green
Oh what excellent advice. I'm a brunette, but I'll pass this onto all of my blonde friends and family members! I know green hair drives some of them NUTS!Good luck going back to brunette, Sweetassgal! :]
im a brunette so no worries here. The Egg hair masque also works on all hair for shiny factor!
I recently went back to blonde after about a year with auburn hair. I think it's the contrast of darker hair and lighter eyes that make people take notice. I also got a lot of compliments on my eyes with darker hair. But since I'm actually blonde (although not the shade I am currently wearing), I just don't feel like me if I'm not blonde. I think I do look better with darker hair, though, so I'll probably go back eventually. If I could figure out which one makes me look younger, I would stick with that one!
My sister's bright blonde hair ALWAYS turned green by the end of summer. She had some luck with Malibu treatments, but eventually we figured out that rinsing our hair w/ water before getting the pool helped(Her hair didn't turn green, and my curly mess didn't get dried out). This recipe sounds great, and I'll pass this on to her for next summer.
I naturally have medium brown hair so by the time summer is coming to an end my hair turns a highlighted reddish brown with super light tips...BTW I live in the sun..I surf everyday! So I usually dye my hair black in the fall to keep people from staring at my ucky, dry and discolored hair. My hair doesnt turn green but I love using natural products whenever I can and have been making my own peels, scrubs, and masks so when I read the ingredients to make this I was convinced to use this and wow my hair is nice and silky I did have to rinse and scrub extra but It works guys!

Thanks for the article.I have always had brown hair (read: mousy boring brown) and I finally changed it to a lighter blonder color. I got so many compliments. Growing up, my best friend had the most beautiful blond hair (which she has never turned green). She now dyes it a very dark brown/black and her blue eyes practically pop out of her head.

no probs with my dark hair..yes i ve tried the egg, looks great, but the place can really stink...I think the better option is fresh aloe vera from ur garden..slice it in the middle, take all the slimy sap form the leaf n apply to ur hair, wash after sometime..its soft n silky:)
Thanks for the tip. i am a waterbug as well with blond hair and i am definitely going to try this tonight!
I used to have brown hair and blonde bangs, my friends loved it but my family hated it hahaha.
the little mermaid !!Ohh I LOVE HER !SO cute and pretty with her deep red hair !
Amy , Big kisses from Paris!
Perfect timing for posting this...my mother needs this done pronto! I'm on my way to get me some cucumbers, oil and egg. Hopefully this will help. Thanks for the review. :-)
Egg + hair = good stuff. Banging hair...havent had that since 93.

It's weird, i have platinum hair and it has never turned even slightly green from pool water. I've also heard tomato ketchup can get out the green, but i don't think i could cope with the smell!
I don't have problems with green hues, but the malibu wellness shampoo's and conditioner's would really help with this. I personally love malibu's! They have a special malibu for swimmer's, I think that would take out the green tone. If nothing else would take it out naturally you'd have to use a toner.

Would it change the properties or effects of the recipe much if I omitted the cucumber? I can't stand the smell of it, it makes me gag D:
yay for olive oil :Di love homemade recipes- this one was super. thanks :D
Def want this! Nice article
