WAX ON, WAX OFF - PARISSA WAX STRIPS

Sat, 08/22/2009 - 11:36pm
  • Miscellaneous

parissaMissRo here to talk about hair removal. I'm a bit obsessed with hair removal. I shave my legs everyday, I use Nad's cream hair removal on my arms and I use Parissa wax strips for my facial hair. If I had all the money in the world, I would probably get most of my hair removed by going to get it waxed and maybe my facial hair threaded. Since I don't have that kind of money I have to do it all myself. Well...except for the bikini area ;).

What I love about Parissa Wax Strips is that they are made with natural ingredients and completely cruelty-free (not tested on animals). What I also love about them is that they are SO easy to use. You basically warm up the strips in your hand, carefully place it on the area you wish to remove the hair, rub it on, then pull it off and voila!

Parissa Wax Strips are sold in different boxes for different areas of the body. You can get them for the face and bikini or the legs and body. If waxing is not your thing, then try Parissa's 2-in-1 Roll On. You literally roll it on and then wash it off. How easy is that! If you want to venture into more of a salon-style hair removal system, then try their hot wax.

The finishing process after removing the strips is to use the Azulene Oil that comes with it. You can either pour a couple of drops of the oil on your fingers and rub it on the spot where the hair was removed. Or, soak a cotton ball with the oil and dab the area. What's great about the oil is that it's soothing, boots cell regeneration, delays re-growth and prevents ingrown hair!

I usually buy Parissa products at Whole Foods, but you can also purchase them at Drugstore.com. Happy waxing!

What do you do for hair removal?

I'm guessing you can't use the roll on wash off product in the bikini area. Here I'm thinking of a friend who attempted to wax the particular area. After the first tentative stab at ripping the wax off, she crumbled, and ended up walking around with the wax attached for about 2 days (suffering thru' showers, which she hoped would lessen the attachment, and underwear that had to be well-powdered and carefully removed before raising the nerve to just pull it out. She goes to a salon now......

That makes me laugh remembering the first time my sister tried to wax her pits. 5 minutes after putting it on she call me histerically for help cause she didn't dare to take it off so ... she make me cut every single hair with a pair of scissors.

That was so funny. My mom's friend went to wax that area and couln't bear to pull it off. She drew a hot bath (thinking that would melt the wax so she could get it off pain free) and got gerself stuck to the bottom of the tub. Hilarity ensued but it lets me know what to never do.

I had one leg waxed by a friend it was awful she spent nost of the time chasing me round the room with me saying "no, im not ready yet"!!! hahahaa quite funny really-i find leg waxing so painful! but i like waxing my eyebrows ( i havent dont that for years though-i just use tweezers)I had my eyebrws threaded before and they looked amazing!!! perfect infact! I will def have them done again.I would like to wax my legs (especiallly before holiday so i dont have to think aboout shaving) but im too chicken-i can never bring myself to rip off the strips so i end up just slowly peeling them off (which doesnt pull out the hairs!)MY mum had one that you heat up and spread on then it dries really quickly and goes quite hard (a bit like plastic) so nop  matter how gently you try to pull it off it pulls out the hairs because it it so set into them-ooooouuuucchhhh!!!!!!

Hi!Parissa sounds much better than the sucky Sally Hansen wax strips I once used. Here is something I have saved on the computer. Courtesy of Dao from mymakeupblog.blogspot.comGreat DIY Wax Recipe:What you need:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

How to make it:

  • Combine all ingredients together in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Watch over this pan until it bubbles and start to have the color of ginger ale.
  • In a separate pan, boil some water.
  • To test the readiness of the wax mixture, use a metal spoon and scoop a spoonful of mixture. If it bubbles in the spoon for at least two seconds, the mixture is ready.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and add 1 tablespoon of boiling water from the second pan and stir thoroughly. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before storing in a plastic or glass container.
  • To make cleaning the pan easier, pour the remaining hot water from the second pan to the first one (the one used to boil the wax) before cleaning it.

Now, here’s the fun part: How to sugar waxOther things you’ll need

  • Cornstarch
  • Cotton muslin strips or strips of paper bag cutouts
  • Wooden Popsicle sticks or a smooth butter knife with no serration
  • Two old, washable towels

Before using this sugar mixture you just made, let it cool down totally. To use it, just heat it in the microwave for a few minutes until it get to the honey-like consistency. I’d like to have a warm water pot nearby to put the wax in so I don’t have to hobble back and forth between the bathroom and the microwave oven :)Then coat the part you want to wax generously with cornstarch. For example, if you want to wax your leg, just coat it until it looks snow white. Coating it with powder makes your skin less tolerable to the abrasion caused by waxing.Next, coat your hands with cornstarch as well and you’re ready to apply the sugar wax to your skin.Important step: apply the wax to the direction of hair growth! Then apply the strip on top of the wax, gently rub it two or three times in downward strokes. Take a deep breath and quickly pull the strip out of your leg.You can reuse the same strip over and over again until it’s thick with wax.To remove the leftover wax on your skin, use the old towels :)Unless you have really sensitive skin or use retinoids, sugaring is for you. This recipe can be used to remove facial hair as well. If kept properly, it can last for about a month.

xemailheather--I've use the Sally Hansen at home wax strips on my legs a few years ago and they didn't do a very good job of removing my hair. I have really coarse, dark hair, so I always end up feeling a little nervous around bikini season! For my face, I just tweeze, or sometimes use facial depilatory creams. For my body, I've used Nair with decent results. I have to leave it on longer than directed to really get all of the hair off. I only really use it during the summer, the rest of the year I just shave. However, if you are on retinoids or any other rx that affects your skin, very careful about using any hair removal method besides shaving! I had just started Accutane and a few weeks in decided to use some facial hair remover like Nair... I ended up getting chemical burns on my face. OUCH. And a few weeks after that, I tried using a pore strip on my nose--ended up ripping off some of the skin on my nose! (Apparently I didn't figure it out the first time that MY SKIN IS NOW SENSITIVE!)

i heard sugaring is less painful than waxing because it only grabs onto hair. Waxing on the other hand sticks to the skin so it can get irritated and painful. i would prefer shaving but my hair grows in so fast so i have to stick with sugaring because it at least keeps me hair-free longer. I love the idea of strips that actually have wax on them already! Less mess!

Pretty much all I ever do for hair removal is shaving.  Everything else is too much effort lol.  I used to use an epilator, but got tired of it.  I've never tried waxing myself, and the only thing I've had waxed are my brows.  I really want to try a bikini wax at some point, it's so expensive though!  Luckily I'm very pale and most of my body hair is blond, and I don't have any noticeable facial hair!

These Parissa strips were an unmitigated disaster for me. They barely removed any hair, and left gobs of wax behind. However, I loved the Azulene Oil, and would like to be able to purchase it, by itself. Shobha's Sugaring Kit works about a thousand times better, for my hair situation. Between the Shobha product, and my Braun Silk-Epil Epilator, it's pretty easy to keep myself fully landscaped, in a pain-free manner. Lol! I'm currently eyeing the new Silk'n SensEpil at Sephora, but at $500, that's a huge outlay for something that hasn't been extensively reviewed, yet. However, if it works well, it could be a good (and economical) substitute for anyone who's considering laser hair removal.

I dont do anything to my arm hair because Its REALLLLY REALLY light, so I just leave it alone. And I dont get facial hair besides eyebrows.

I'm obsessed with hair removal as well. However, I'm really scared of waxing! it sounds so painful! For my facial hair, I thread it myself. It's a little painful at first, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. Plus, you have more control over exactly what angles you want to remove your hair (it's important for eyebrows).  I usually shave my legs, but I discovered this thing at the drugstore the other day where you apply this cream and the hair comes right off. Has anybody tried this type of treatment and does it work?

Ooh, the after waxing oil sounds really great. At present I go to a salon to have my bikini waxed.  I find they do a cleaner and better job than I could do at home, and it means I don't have a huge clean-up afterwards.  Also I find myself woosing out if I'm the one who's pulling the strips off me!  If it's someone else doing it then they can really get in there and take out all of the hair.  I like this idea for facial hair and maybe underarm hair as it's not quite as sensitive as down there.  Thanks for the post MissRo.  :]

I've tried waxing with a concoction of sugar, water and lemon that has been boiled down to a sticky syrup. I spread the "wax" on my skin and place a strip of cloth and then yank that mother! I only used this on my upper lip as my legs can't take waxing. I've also tried the real wax that you melt on the stove and as the wax hardens on your skin you yank it out. Now that was really effective especially on my underarms. I've also tried Veet Wax Strips on my upper lip and bikini line. That works too, probably the same as Parissa, but I haven't tried that brand.

I have used these strips for years on my upper lip and under my chin.  They have worked well for me -- sometimes I cut them in half to fit better.  Waxing does hurt -- but there is no heat associated with these and I appreciate that part.  However, I have graduated to laser hair removal and am thrilled with the results!  And really, it doesn't hurt that bad...  A Brazillian wax hurts a heck of a lot more and longer than laser hair removal in that same area!

Save your skin -- ALWAYS wear SPF 30 or higher, and a hat!

I'm telling you ---the poetic waxing kit is very gentle....and is made by a great company!  BLISSI love the poetic waxing and it doesn't hurt that badly.

I haven't tried this brand.  I tried the Nad's wax strips and OMG.  What a pain in the ass!  Or leg?  It was my first time trying waxing and it did not go well.  I followed the directions but I just couldn't rip hard and fast enough or pull the skin taught enough because it kept sticking to my skin and didn't really do a good job of removing hair.  Then, I was covered in the Nad's.  The company claims that you can rinse it off with water but nuh-uh!  I had to get baby oil out of my cabinet and pour it on my legs and try and rub it in and I still had trouble getting it off.  Then I had to clean my tub to get the oil out.  NOT WORTH IT.  Confession: Shaving bugs the crap out of me.  I don't really shave much at all these days.  I have nobody to impress at the moment and I've pretty much worn pants all summer.  Then I had the cellulitis and I'm a little petrified of shaving and nicking myself (which I do at least three times every time I shave) and having a relapse.  So I really haven't shaved.  My hair is super super fine and very light and kind of soft so it doesn't even really show up and I don't get the porcupine stubble feeling.  I would definitely go and get my legs waxed professionally since the hair probably wouldn't grow for months and it would be cost effective.  Not to mention it would save me the trouble of dealing with it.

I've never tried the strips, but I've used a sugaring system from Parissa for several years and it works great for my underarms. Shaving irritates my skin, so sugaring/waxing is actually more comfortable. A quarter of a second of mild pain when the strip comes off, and that's that for a few weeks. ;) I also recently tried Moom's sugaring kit (they sell an adorable mini version that's great for travel), and I like that one too.
