TOM'S OF MAINE MOISTURIZING BODY BAR IN LAVENDER!

Sweetassgal here today opening my mind and my olfactory senses to one of my least favorite scents...lavender. Love the color...never loved the scent. Something about it just makes my nose itchy! But it's in everything nowadays and so I thought I'd give it another go. Fresh lavender is just too much for me so I picked up a bar of Tom's of Maine Moisturizing Body Bar in Lavender for me and unscented for my husband. I popped his in the shower and mine by the tub since that seems to be where I spend most of my time lately. My daughter Samantha too since she had arthroscopic surgery on her knee last Thursday and it's tub time only for her. Feel better baby!
First off I'm very impressed with Tom's of Maine's mission in the world. They are, of course, 100% animal cruelty free, use the most natural (not necessarily organic) ingredients possible, they take excellent care of their workers, use sustainable materials and generally give back to the world. Not only do they encourage all employees to volunteer but they also sponsor a dental program that gets care to those in need. VERY impressive! And I must admit...I've overlooked Tom's because of a negative experience with the natural deodorant. In hind sight I've learned the deodorant WAS doing its job...controlling odor. I wanted it to be an anti-persperant as well (which is counter productive to the "natural" deo mission) and so I therefore disregarded everything. Just like the lavender...I'm taking another look.
Tom's of Maine's Business Practices - "Our work begins and ends with relationships. We start by respecting and empowering each other as coworkers, and build on that to develop true ties with our retail partners and vendors. The ultimate goal is to create honest and open relationships with everyone who uses our products, and believes, like us, that a company can and should be both successful and socially responsible." Tom O'Brien, CEO
Sound familiar anyone? This is JUST the kind of forward thinking and respect for empowering individuals that Meg has managed to create here for us to enjoy every day! Just goes to show great minds think alike! You rock Meg!!!
So to the soap...I like this soap a lot. Social responsibility aside its a great bar of soap for $3.00. It lathers well, feels very creamy...almost buttery (without the grease, fat and calories!) and hydrates well. I've tried other natural soaps (Dr. Bonners and EO) which were good but this is better. I'm dying to try Pangea Organics as I'm hearing great things about them but I haven't had the opportunity to come up on one. And of course there is always my FAVORITE...Suki Lemongrass Bar cleanser. It's $11 and a splurge for me but it's where I set the bar. Tom's comes in somewhere in between...kind of a "good solid 7 and a half" (For any of you who have had the pure pleasure to see the movie Beautiful Girls...this is one of my fav quotes. Rent it to see an adorable Natalie Portman at about 13 and a hysterical rant from Rosie O'Donnell's character on men's obsession with fake women). It's a great soap for the price and won't leave you disappointed. Oh...and I also did the ultimate soap test this morning. I bathed, used the lavender soap and left for work sans deodorant to see how I'd hold up. It's evening now and I'm getting a little funky...I'd say mini-funk but not reminiscent of my Weleda OMG-my-eyes-are-burning SUPER funk I experienced a while back. That was funk on crack, on meth, on speed (are any of those the same thing?...I'm not up on the drug speak).
As for the lavender scent...I can see how it's relaxing because this soap is delicately lavender and not over the top. But it's still not winning me over. I'll keep using the unscented until it's gone, try the Calendula scent next time and when I'm a little more flush I'll splurge on my Suki Lemongrass bar. I could EAT that stuff...I won't...but I could...but I won't....maybe!
What are your favorite natural soaps and scents? Let me know. GLAM ON!!!!!

Tell your daughter to feel better (Hey Samantha! :) Feel better! )I personally have tried Tom's of Maine because they seemed like a cool company. I tried their lavender deodorant (relaxing and less smelly armpits, right?) Unfortunately not. Because it's not an antiperspirant, it did nothing for my sweaty pits (not that I expected it to), but it didn't help keep the smell at bay either. I was unimpressed, at best, and decided to find a better deodorant, esp one with an antiperspirant!

I LOVE lavender scents! I see Tom's of Maine at Trader Joe's, but I haven't seen this bar, otherwise I would probably pick it up, if nothing else to sniff when I'm feeling stressed.
ooh I LOVE lavender. Just bought a new plant yesterday! SO excited, its blooming too!!!!The smell is intoxicating to me.I have a lavender tattoo and I love showing it off in the summer!I love the mision of the company but I am usually not impressed with all natural products... Specifically toothpaste! YUk. Ive used the toms toothpaste before... ehh it doesnt DO anything for me!But the soaps I can handle. I usually use the lavender oil soaps from BBW.plus i put it in a spray bottle with warm water and it wards away pests.Did you know lavender is a natural pest repellant? Apparently they hate the smell,My ingenious idea was the make a garden within a garden. Veggies and whatnot on the inside. Lavender all around the outside! like a natural pesticide!!!Ooops now Ive told you all my secret plans....

I think that lavender is an acquired smell. I know when when I first smelled lavender, I really didn't like it. However, the hubby LOVES the smell, so over the years, I've gotten used to it. Sometimes, you can find lavender scented stuff that is "cut" with another scent, so that it isn't as powerful of a smell.I have one of the Toms of Maine liquid hand soaps, in the lavender scent. It is supposed to be moisturizing, but I don't think it's any more moisturizing than a regular hand soap. I too tried one of their deodorants too, with no luck. It left me smelling overly ripe. The tooth paste was okay, but I do like their mouthwash. For a natural soap, I really like 100% Pure body washes. If you're into bar soaps, Lush has some great soaps. I also used to like the bar soaps from The Body Shop.
I personally haven't ever purchased "all natural" soaps and such just because I feel that they don't clean as thoroughly. I've used them at friends' houses before, and I really wasn't impressed. However, it may just be that I haven't found the right brand - I am very pro-natural ingredients, so maybe I'll just stalk this post and see what others have to say!
xoxo
I too love love love the smell of lemongrass. When my hubby uses the Takrai Lemongrass Scrub from Garden of Wisdom I can't stop sniffing his face! I love the scent of the product, but when it's on my hunny it smells extra delicious! I also like the smell of lavender, but I am very picky about it. My momma-in-law has some cheap lavender lotion in her bathroom that gives me a headache. I do love the scent though, it reminds of my Yaya. I personally do not like bar soaps for the body, I am 100% body wash. I always worry that I'm going to drop the bar soap, step on it, and bust my a$$. Right now I've been using Dr. Bronner's liquid castille in Peppermint. I love the scent, but don't care too much for how it makes my skin feel afterward. But it is nice and refreshing. I do however use a bar soap for my face. My HG cleanser, the super awesome Neem Beauty Bar from Camellia Rose : ) I bought some liquid foundation today from the Sally Hansen/Carmindy line and was worried that the bar wouldn't take all the make-up off, but it did an awesome job! No make-up residue on my toner soaked cotton ball!! Lastly, I see that natural deodorant was mentioned. Another one of my HG products is the Crystal Body Deodorant Spray. Yep, it's a deodorant, not an anti-perspirant, but that doesn't bother me one bit. I love that it's in a spray bottle, I think it's more sanitary than a roll-on and I also like that it's unscented as I've grown sensitive to synthetic fragrances. I just read on the website that you can actually use it "anywhere on the body to control odor, including feet, chest, and inner thighs" Nice!
Im not too fussed about lavender either, much prefer rose. I'm using a lovely soap i got in a vegan restaurant in Edinburgh Scotland called Susies Diner. The soap is Rose and geranium, smells divine ! http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=16699444The soap feels so luxurious and smooth, oh it is nice.I dont use it on my face though, i think it might be too much for the face, not sure, but im not risking it.
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
Ooh sounds lovely! I do like a company that looks out for its employees and the world at large. :]Regarding soap, I really can't go past my first love - LUSH. My staples include creamy redskin-bar smelling Rockstar; creamy and lovely marzipan scented Snowcake [a Christmas limited edition, although I always stock up for the months in between!] and the relaxing and comforting Honey I Washed the Kids. My partner and his children have fallen for LUSH since I moved in, and thus have caused my LUSH buying to increase.. but I can't say I mind, considering they have a similar ethos to Tom. Hopefully we can all make the world a better place - one bar of soap at a time. :]
I like their toothpaste but have never tried their soap. I am going to Wegman's this week and will definitely look for it. I love the smell of lavender.
Get well soon samantha,I've never tried tom's of maine even though I,ve seen it in my local health store-I'll pick it up now and give it a go -really good price.I like the sound of their ethics-I suppose if we buy from companies like this more often it will encourage less ethical companies to up their game.I love lavender because it's the only thing to get me to sleep,I use the lavender room spray and it knocks me out.Punky dew-I also bought a lavender plant 2 weeks ago-its not so much with the blooming though-any tips?.

I'm with you sweetassgal.....I'm not a lavender fan! I personally love the scents of oranges, lemons, strawberry's, coconut and my favorite is peach.I wish i could find a soap that was "good" for the environment as well as my body and soul in one of the above scents. I have tried quite a few but have found none that makes my buy it again....so def no holy grail for me yet! I like the concept of lush but....have none near me so i would have to buy online. And i have not found anywhere near me that sells good soap....As for toms of maine.....it sounds like they are a great company to work for and i'd love to find some of their products on my recommended listings but....have only found a few. Some of their products did not do so well : http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/wordsearch.php?query=toms+of+maineany suggestions girls?
I love this soap. We really like Toms of Maine. My daughter has been a fan for several years and loves their soaps and toothpastes. I happen to just adore the scent of lavendar. We grow it and it is just about my favorite plant. Well, next to the Agrimony, LOL. Lavendar and roses are a favorite combination as is lavendar and chamomille. I have found that if I rub a natural bar of soap on a poof, I get way more lather than I get without one. I think for me, the amount of lather is what I need to feel clean. I know that I always feel clean and fresh with Toms of Maine.Their soaps seem to last as well, which is nice.
i really like natural things from apple cider vinegar rinses to using honey in my hair. right now im in LOVE with dr. bronners magical soaps. i dont like them for washing my hair too often but showering and shaving is the best with that liquid soap. i used it to clean my make up brushes b/c it was natural and it did great. i dont think i will use it everytime b/c it left them a little too dry for me.

I don't go for Lavender much either; my mom was absolutely in love with Yardley's Old English Lavender Soap - she liked to keep it in her drawers so all of her clothing would have that scent. The one and only 'lavender' product I have in the house is Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Lavender Scent Hand Lotion. You either like it or you don't. Mrs. Meyer's Lavender scent is a bit more fresh than most lavender scents and if you put this lotion on; people far and wide will notice you have it on! LOL! One of my girlfriends loved it so much we had to go right to the store to get it! On the other hand, the one and only bottle I have - well it's been here a long long time because most people try it and don't want to use it again. I don't use bar soap really at all with the exception of Lever 2000 which works for me on 'personal' areas in the shower. Other soaps can lead to female infections for me so I just stay clear of all of them with the exception of the Lever 2000! If I buy bar soaps at all, it's to put in my drawer like my mom did to keep my clothes smelling nice! There are some really lovely HUGE fancy quality soaps at Marshall's just for this purpose! For me it's any really FRESH intoxicating scent of soap that lures me in and compels me to make a purchase! The only Tom's of Maine product I tried was the toothpaste and I only bought it once because it really didn't win me over.Your daughter should come shining through her arthroscopic surgery! I have had that surgery twice now on the same knee and I'm still moving around quite well - not leaping like a gazelle exactly but pretty great considering I don't have much cartilage left! Healing thoughts are coming across the airwaves!
Jeanasina!
i'm lacking some natural soap at the moment! but it would be great for a long day at work/uni. i was never into scented oil or anything like that until my mum took me to a homeware store (not sure why she wanted to get scented oil from there..) after smelling every bottle, we both feel in love with "lily of the valley"..not sure if it's common. I'm not a scent/perfume person, anything strong makes me a bit sick. But perfume wise, i lovveeeeee daisy by marc jacobs, it's the only thing i'd spray on myself!
My new Ebay Store: cossiepieMy blog: http://lazyscorner.blogspot.com/
Being from NH.. ive seen this every where but never thought anything about it ....Unfortinatly my boyfriend just brought home 5 body gels from Bath && body because of there buy 3 get 2 free (( i know i asked him why he was in the store too! )) but i think we will be good on soap for like years!! ahahaBut when we do run out ill definatly have to try this out! Thank you!! <3
I love Tom's of Maine. My hubby and I have been using their toothpaste for years! I am not a bar soap person mainly because it's messy. I definitely prefer a pump in my shower. Also, not a huge fan of strong lavender scents (but, like Jeanasina, I LOVE Mrs. Meyers Lavender cleaning products!!). My favorite soap scents are tea (white & green), flowery (rose, jasmine) and citrusy (lemon, orange). Samantha, I hope you are feeling better! xo.
SAG, I enjoyed reading this as I do all your excellent stuff, but I am a gel girl through and through, having happily abandoned bar soap more than 15 years ago. I am really writing to declare solidarity with sweetassdaughter, having recently recovered from arthroscopic knee surgery myself. Please tell her that although it is definitely a process, it is worth it. And she can email me at justjoan123@gmail.com if she has any questions, veteran to veteran, but rule number one is -- don't give up icing too soon. It's a nuisance, but 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off can do wonders. And a good collapsible cane can get her a seat on the bus, if buses are in her future.
Tom's of Maine is a good ecology-minded company, and my son loved their children's toothpaste when he was younger, but I've found their deodorant not strong enough, and the mouthwash tastes a bit off. I still keep an eye on their product line, in hopes that it improves somewhat.
Hope your daughter feels better soon!I love all things lavender- it really calms me down. As far as my favorite soaps- and i also used to love body washes over soaps- it is from and Etsy seller Magic Hands Workshop - magichands on etsy. MHW has wonderful scents and the bars are natural and beautiful looking. I am saying this is good for gifting, but you will end up using it for yourself probably. I ordered samples- each lasted me a week at least. My favorite is Champagne (when i unwrapped it - it scented my entire bathroom)- smells like bubbly, and Pele- smells like chocolate... They have salt bars and shea bars- i like shea better they are more moisturizing. Shipping is quick, and seller is very nice, she also runs specials from time to time... Etsy also has many other great looking soaps on sale, but this seller is the only one i can vouch for :)
Ugh, Lavender scent. I can't stand the scent, I got Dr. Bronners soap once in lavender and ended up tossing it because the scent would make me cringe. But I do like Tom's of Maine and if the scent isn't too overpowering it may be worth a shot. I just recently ordered from Chagrin Valley and they make all natural and soothing soaps for body and face. Some are vegan, some aren't but they are clearly marked. I am still waiting on my order but I have sensitive and dry skin and I have had a ton of recommendations on these soaps to help my poor skin out.
I'm not much of a lavender scent lover. It's a bit too much for me so I bet those who love the scent would really love the soap. I have tried one of their deodorants in a sample size and I had high hopes for it, but it did not work at all. The scent of the actual deodorant was way too musky and too "manly".

I love the sent of lavender...I bet i would love this soap
Lavender and I do not get along. But I see that they also have a Calendula bar and I bet I'd like that one. The price is sure right and I'm all for trying products that don't contain a bunch of ingredients I can't pronounce!
My fave is LUSH Honey I washed the kids!! I love it sooooo much!!! I have several others but always use this one!! I also like Camellia Rose and Dr. Bonners and I also order from a few shops on Etsy!!
This is one of my all-time-favourites too - it's a sure winner with the whole family! :D
I hate the scent of lavender too. I don't know why and everyone thinks I'm weird for it...but it just reminds me of like ancient old ladies. This soap sounds good. I don't usually like bar soap because I find it drying, but I can honestly say I don't think I've ever used "all natural" bar soap, which might make a difference. I've tried Tom's of Maine deodorant and I wasn't thrilled - this sounds much more promising, in another scent, of course :)
I have the Tom's of Maine deodorant in Honeysuckle and it's alright but not the greatest. I think it'll work fine in the winter but not the summer. I'm wearing it today actually and it's 2 pm and I smell a little funky. I was running late and didn't shower this morning but I did last night. I've heard that there is one scent of Tom's deodorant that works really well but I can't remember which one that is. hmm I'll have to go see if I can find that review.
I'm not sure if you'll see this reply (not sure if the site notifies you of a reply), but I was wondering if you found that review you referred to? I'd love to read/hear more about a natural deaoderant that works well. Cheers.
I've heard of Tom's of Maine but I haven't tried it yet. They don't really sell their products in my neighborhood. I think i've seen the toothpaste but i'm a little hesitant to get it.Is Aveeno a natural soap? I really like it. i think its made with oatmeal but im not really sure. Oh, and the absolute worst thing i've had with lavender is COOKIES. yep. Lavender cookies. DISGUSTING. i'm not a big fan of lavender and i dont mind it either but when i had that cookie... UGH.
Actually Aveeno likes to market like they are so natural but really there are still a lot of ingredients in there I wouldn't use. It's buyer beware when it comes to what is and isn't natural.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I like the scent of lavendaer but I can't do strong smells...so if it's very potent I just get a headache. I have never heard of this company before, but I like the effort they put into being eco friendly...and people friendly.

I love the smell of olbas oil- I have a bottle next to the bad and i always put a few drps under my pillow before i sleep!I like lavender but i dont love it-I always think of it as a bit of an old lady smell ! :)I am not a fan of soaps because they are so drying- i always go for shower gel, but i will give this a try as you say its moisturising, and you seem to like it and i trust your opinion!
I love lavendar!!! I always find myself smelling candles and soaps etc when out lol,
lavender is wonderful! I use it all the time! I can't get enough of it!!! I just bought Hugo Naturals french lavender mist from iherb for 1.79 and it's so wonderful! I'm sure I'll be using one a week from now on! as for Tom's of Maine, it's a great company with excellent products and great prices!
Sounds like a good deal for the price. I have never actually purchased all natural soaps. I have always been big into beauty stuff, including bodywashes and body oils, etc. But I have never really tried different kinds of bar soaps for some reason. But I've been really interested, and definitely want to try some. I have really wanted to try the french soaps and the ones from Lush.
All my facial cleansers have lavender in them. I get everything from Soapalayasoaps on Etsy. She also makes great bar soaps that I love. We are using Cucumber Slices at home but I really want to try the Basmati Rice she has. I tried the fennel (?) toothpaste from Tom's & I wasn't happy with it. It might've just been the taste of fennel though. I do love how they run their company. Thanks for giving me a reason to give them a try again.
I have never tried any natural soaps but I may try this one out because I love the scent of lavender! I find it very calm and relaxing. Thanks for the great post and info. :)
I've tried their toothpaste before and didn't like it so I have stayed away from trying any of their other products.

I love lavendar! I've been looking for a good bar of soap that is scented also! This may be a winner! YAY!
Just letting you all know its been a week and I still like the moisturizing properties of this soap. For those of you who worry about bar soap being too drying to your skin I wouldn't worry. Unless of course you have really sensitive and super dry skin. I find this to not be drying at all when I shower. When I bathe its still almond oil for me making my skin SUPER soft!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I don't think I've ever come across this brand here in Sweden. Though it sounds like a good brand, might just ask my local shop about it, and who knows it just might turn up here in the future.Anyhow, my favourite natural soaps are made by Ida at Chagrin Valley. They are super, duper moisturising and come in several different versions (not just scent wise, but ingredient wise too). My favourite is Honey Butter, which leaves my skin as smooth as silk after use. Overall, my skin seem to like natural better than anything else. Especially when it comes to soap. Have yet to find a non natural soap that doesn't make me break out in red rashes.
Ive tried the lavender soaps, and I also had a grapefruit and something else deoderant. I love the soaps, and the deoderant I found was Ok. It didnt stop the sweat, and a little bit of the odor still made it through, but thats because it doesnt contain any of the harsh chemicals that the other brands have that keep the sweat and scent at bay.
You know, I used to hate the smell of lavender, and then I was going through a really stressful time, and someone suggested that lavender would help me calm down and sleep at night. And I was able to get used to it, and actually sort of like it now. And it really does help you relax and sleep.
i love lavender. It's really relaxing.
ohh, i love the feel of natural soaps. such as the bars of soap i get from trader joe's.. they feel so nice on the skin!
xoxo
I've never used Tom's of Maine products, but I absolutely adore all things lavender, so I'll have to keep an eye out for this.
Thanks to my brother's exczema, we get Dove beauty bars and they are amazing! I also use body washes from bath and body works and DIY sugar scrub. I think I saw tom's of maine products in borders.. Oh and my neighbor actually makes soap and sells it on Etsy.
This is an awesome brand, I really need to get around to buying more of it. All of it just smells so good to me.I've been really hooked on lemongrass smells lately, too! It just smells amazing! Totally OT, but I have a rosemary lemongrass laundry soap that just smells amazing!
Never tried their soap but love their toothpaste. I think Apricot is my favourite!
