DOES HIGH FASHION TRANSLATE? MY MOHAWK PONYTAIL IN REAL LIFE..WELL, LOS ANGELES

Meg here! SO I am pretty obsessed with W Magazine and all of the couture and the models dramatic looks. I'm daring. I love a beaded headpiece as much as the next girl. It's just some of the designs that come down the catwalk are such pieces of art that even if I had the funds-where would I wear them?
I feel that way about a lot of the make-up as well. I love Nadja Auermman as much as the next modelizer. I just gazed at a picture of her wearing a mohawk looking ponytail with crazy dramatic eye-makeup and I thought "Hmm, I wonder if this would work in real life?" As luck would have it I had an industry event to go to last night. I also wasn't having the best hair day. I thought what better time to experiment and see how the mohawk ponytail translates to real life. I thought I'd throw super dramatic eyes in just to try to mimic the look.
How'd it go? Well, I opened the front door and hopped into Megken's car.
Megken: Your makeup looks really good, your hair looks like Grace Jones or something though.
So 1 Point Makeup 0 on hair. The event was not an entertainment event but a technology one so there wasn't exactly a lot of "boundary pushing looks going on" or any actually.
My verdict? It was fun and I might do the look again for real life instead of just "experiment." I got a few looks and a woman in the ladiesroom said she "loved it,"so there's that.
Here is what I used...
Face: Classified Cosmetics Aero Minerale Spray for my foundation. I then added Benefit's Georgia Peach as a powder.
Eyes: Alexander De Markoff Disquise For Eyes Primer, Cat Cosmetics Hello Gorgeous brownson my lids. Urban Decay Eyelash Primer, Thebalm's Two-Timer Mascara, Urban Decay Ink For Eyes in "Zero"
I also threw in a couple individual false pieces on the outer lid for some extra drama and pop!
Lips: Liptini stain in "Cassis"
Hair: Took me 5 minutes flat. I just teased the front and sprayed the heck out of it! Then I gathered the rest and ponytailed it.
SIMPLE TO PULL OFF!!
It was definitely simple to pull off but what do you think? Ridiculous? Way out there? Would you give it a shot?
How closely do you follow the images in the mags? Its fun to play with it but do you ever leave the house trying to mimic the models looks?

You look great!I love the hair. It's fun! It's definitely not for everyday wear, but if you like it and you have an event to go to..why not? I really like your eye makeup. It's pretty. I'm not loving the lip color, but I tend to gravitate towards nude/pink lips. I definitely try to recreate looks ALL the time. I don't usually have the confidence to pull them off outside of my house though, well, unless it looks seriously awesome :)
Ha! Meg, you won't believe it, but I once had blonde hair too (it was around 2002-2003, experimental phase) and I tried exactly the hairdo you're wearing in the pictures!! My hair was "cheap blonde" at this time and you could really tell it was fake. Anyways, I needed tons of hairspray to keep the look in place all day. As I have a little bit of a square face, this created the first problem. The look is creative and "different" but not for me. After I changed my haircolor back to black, I was never tempted to try this hairdo again. Guess why:-).As for you, I think it looks great. Though, to be really honest, it makes you look....hm, severe/strict (if that's the right word, I don't mean it in a bad way!) and from what I know of you so far, that's far far from it!! But of course, for one night, why not...I like to experiment with my hair a lot too. The makeup is good, maybe a little too less eye makeup (but then again, you're putting all attention on your pout and it won't go together, I agree..). I try to figure out what's missing...ah, I got it: Blush! Maybe a little more accent on your beautiful cheekbones, and it would be picture-perfect!

You rock that pony-hawk!!! True, at some super-casual social events one can appear over dressed and ridiculous...but this? You can NEVER be too FABULOUS!!!!Whenever I have some kind of event, I LOVE to carefully plan my whole outfit, head to toe and I'm not creative enough to come up with all of my own ideas, so I definitely steal looks from magazines. You look awesome, I say next time, go BIGGER!!!!
When I have long hair that is my standard 'going out' hairstyle. Mostly because its the only thing i can do and anything else just fails/takes too long.I think it looks great!!I often try to re-create things I see in the fashion mags - but mostly in the comfort of my own bathroom!! Haha.
Meg, I think you look super-punk, with a little dominatrix thrown in. Me likey, just not for shopping at Ralph's.
I think you look hot! I wish I could recreate looks that I see in magazines, but I'm just not that talented!! I think your rocking that look! I wish I could apply fake eyelashes to myself, but no matter how often I try, they never look right!
Personally, I love the fashion mags. You look FABULOUS. I wish I had some where to go all dressed up like that. I sell textbooks to schools. My dress stays sort of the conservative side. However, after reading this . . . I so want to step outside of my normal same old thing and try something RADICAL! :)
I love the pony hawk but....i could never pull it off! My curly hair would look absolutely ridiculous and it would make every one crack up ;)I know my hair limits...LOLas for the makeup....I love everything esp the eyes but am not loving the lipstick...it looks severe! If you added a bit of gloss--we;d be talking a whole different ballgame bc the color is nice just severe!
I really like the hair. I have done a ponyhawk before and I got a lot of compliments and "how did you do that" questions. I can't remember where I first saw this look...maybe Gwen Stefani? I don't know.I say the hair is a keeper! Megken was right about the makeup...it looks fierce! I laughed so hard when you said it was a technology even so there was not many boundary pushing looks. LOL!!In closing, I give the whole look a 10! You can pull it off well!
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

I think it looks very good! It's not outragous or anything. I think you could pull it off in a pair of jeans and a cute top! But if you're going jeans I would tone down the makeup a bit!ALL in all you look great!...Sometimes I gave at the hairstyles in magazines.I've tried a few but never left the house!! I have unruly curly hair so when I try out new styles... they're usually a flop...Though I must say... I pull off the white girl afro rather well ;)

i love this look on u! like really! im not saying do it every single time u go out but it should be part of some of your fall looks. like it's not too over-the-top and not too understated. it's perfect for a nite out!

Meg you look great! When I first saw the pic I wasn't thrilled about the hair but after staring at it for some time I think it has grown on me. I would have to agree with some of the other girls though. The lipstick is pretty severe. All in all though you look like a 10. I don't ever try to create hairstyles because I have short hair. Even when it was long I just put it in a ponytail. I am seriously hair illiterate. As for makeup, I tend to stay on the safe side. I know, I'm boring. LOL.
Meg you totally rocked it! so HOT! the makeup just pulls your whole look together.

You look fan-freakin-tastic. AND you have some serious balls Meg, I love that you put yourself out there and tried something new and so fashion forward. Especially in an environment like that. I always want to try these looks out in public but just end up showcasing my look at home. (boring) You've inspired me, next time I'm taking my look out for a test drive. Stater Brothers Grocery, look out cuz here I come. meeeeooooowwww......
I think it looks great, you totally rock it. Men have no clue what they're talking about lol. I'm never brave (or talented) enough to do cool hair looks, much less wear them out. I'm more of a makeup girl anyway, straightening or scrunching is about as much work as I'll put into my 'do.
I love the mow hawk ponytail, I've been doing it here in Australia for at least the last 6 months. It really dresses up the somewhat tired regular pony-tail and can really make a glamorous addition to a great outfit. I think you look fantastic in the photos and implore you to repeat the look! :D
Wow, you look so different. I am quite not sure if I like it or if it is a little to severe as mentioned above. I wish I had a bigger screen so I could really see it, then perhaps a better answer. I love anyone who can try different styles and pull them off like you did. My hair is not the type.

I've tried the pony-hawk, but I guess I didn't tease enough or use enough hairspray? It just fell flat and looked like I had a tough workout or something. But I just bought Bumpits! So I will try again tomorrow.
I actually love it! You pull it off really well. Long hair can be hard to make interesting, style-wise -- it just ends up being long and nothing else, so I really like this. Mine would never stay straight long enough to pull it off, alas!
I've actually tried doing this hairstyle but it only ended up as an epic failure. My hair really doesn't like being teased. Sometimes I do take inspiration from hairstyles from the runway or from red carpet looks. But in the end I only create my own hairstyle in my mind as I can't fully execute it.
Ooooo, I love this look. I cant quite do the pony with the pomp because I do not have enough hair, as I mentioned in a previous thread my hair gets horrible if I grow it out- but i can rock a pomp, sometimes I do a pomp with Pigtails- kinda cute, It actually helps if you give it a twist before pinning it down It holds it well so it doesn't fall on the sides.
When I first read PonyHawk, I was expecting like. a 5 inch spike. LOL. This was much more wearable and actually really cute! Ponytails in themselves are boring, but this really spices it up nicely and dresses it up too :) I love the way you turned heads! hahaI might try this sometime :] Though I don't think it'd work as well on black hair, the color doesnt make it as boomboompow.
xoxo
I love your look Meg!!! I'm really digging the first picture of you, you look sweet, but mischeivious. I did the PonyHawk a couple of times, but my hubby said that it made me look too 80s... bummer. I think that it is a look that women like, but men just don't understand. I like dressing up, but I don't always want to look like a real-life Barbie doll or princess, sometimes I want to look like Betti Page or Gwen Stefani, you know, something femine, but with an edge. Way to mix things up!
You totally pull this look off but then again you have a very similar facial structure to Nadja. One of my sisters does the pony hawk from time to time and it looks great on her too.I used to pull the cover off cosmo-stick it up beside the mirror and try copy what the make-up artist did.Through my teens I totally ripped off cindy crawford's look-big teased hair,I even used to dot on the mole with brown eyeliner and set with loose powder-the total shame.
PotionPrincess♥
that is a totally cool look. I used to wear a smaller version of that when i had a longer do. Gwen steffani totally rocks this look and it looks great on you too.
I love MegKen's reaction, my BF would probably say the exact same thing. You look great!
I liked this look on you meg, Loved the top you had on :-)I have to say I don't really follow the fashion mags they are just full of adverts which I find annoying, I dress and do my hair and makeup my own way :-)Pony tails kind of give me a headache :-( anyone else get that ???
I love this look! It doesn't look overdone at all! It looks like you're dolled up for night on the town!
Meg, I LOVE it! Next time you are home -- you, me and Greenie need to rock the mohawk ponytails at the Corner Pub ;) xo.
I like the mohawk tail!!! ... next time you do it can you have some one take pics from like all angles so i can copy it!! =D te he he he!!
I LOVE IT!!!! :) You can pull it off for sure!! I want to try it, Gem maybe we can try this at the next bestie dinner?? ;). GO MEG, you are a hottie!
LMAO! Next bestie dinner it is! We'll have to fly Meg in for the event (it wouldn't be the same without her). Imagine the looks if the 5 of us walk into a restaurant sporting the mohawk ponytails!? I am having flashbacks to the "looks" caused by the thin mint cookies in the party bus in high school. hahahha. :)
I absolutely love this look. I think too often we get into the habit of doing the same look or same couple of looks all the time. What's the point in being a girl if we can't experiment with our hair and make up?
Oh it's gorgeous on you!!!!. In everyday life, my 'look', hair aside, is usually either natural, dressy, or pretty edgy. I like dark nails, and clothes with that are a little out there. All this is incongruent with what people expect me to look like, I know. But then having Rancid and Abba in your play list doesn't exactly make sense either. When I do go to gigs (I like to support my brother's band) my inborn rebellion kicks in. If everyone else is going to be wearing black, I'll go 'pretty in pink', or something equally cheerful. One of my friends is married to the vocalist, and she pitches up at gigs with a little black dress and pearls, or something like it. Generally we cause consternation....which amuses the hell out of us. Just never liked being like everybody else.....

i really like it. i dont think i could pull this look off since my hair is really thin, so my hairstyling option are limited somewhat
I think it looks really good! You have a face structure that works well with that style. I am super lazy and incompetent at doing hair. Recently got a haircut I will have to blow out most days. I guess I will have to learn how to be more creative with hairstyles.
I think this looks great on you Meg! I don't think I could pull it off though...That hairstyle is actually pretty popular for every day here in Florida. I have never had the nerve to try it myself...my makeup is usually pretty bold so I lay back on the hair. But I might try it next weekend for my brother in law's bday party since we will be at a club in VIP, what better time to go a little more fab than usual with the hair right?
I personally love the look...and I always say if you ROCK IT with confidence you can get away with just about anything. Do it again chica!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
You look great, love the hair!!! I have really tried to wear my hair similiar to this and it never looks right :( I need lessons
I am what I call a follower I love to follow the trend and I always try as hard as I can do look like "celebrities/ models in magazine" but it never looks the same lol it's frustrating !I love EXTREM AND GLAMOUR LOOK !!! I think you hairstyle looks great and I really like the pink nail polish =)

After reading this blog and looking at Meg's photo, I immediately went into the bathroom and created my rendition of this hairstyle and walked out into the next room where my Harley Husband was sitting and I said "Well? What do you think about my hair sweetie? He's still out in the living room laughing - HARD! He used words like "Road Kill on your head" or mentioned that it looks like I stuck a toupee on top of my head! So, I'm getting the vibe that maybe this isn't the best look for me. I just went back into the living room for another spin around my man and just as it occurred the first time, another instant laugh track came right out of the man! He said he's seen better hairstyles on me.
As to copying photos in magazines for hair style ideas I gotta say I have been doing that for years! I was always really good with my hair and love to change my styles, color etc! I just pour over hairstyle magazines and if any of my friends need ideas they come to me for input and pictures! Another place I got ideas was when I was working, was either on the bus or walking around the mall downtown, I'd see a woman with a great haircut or style and commit it to memory and go home and try it if at all possible! I absolutely bring photos from magazines when I go to get my hair cut or colored! I usually have a picture board that I take to my hair appointments in my giant carry all bag so it doesn't get crushed! LOL! Once I sit down for the pre-style discussion my stylist and I have, I will patiently point to each photo and say, “I want the front of my hair to look like this first photo, and make the color sort of like this 2nd photo, and then I want the back of my hair to be cut like this 3rd photo and be sure the bangs look like this 4th photo!!" You get my drift right? I always have criteria about my haircuts and colors! LOL! I'm sure I am quite the piece of work to my stylists! Trying new hairstyles is so much fun though! Makes you feel like a new woman - not necessarily a woman a certain Harley Husband can look at with a straight face - but a new woman none-the-less!
Jeanasina!
I wish I could do something like this with my hair for a glam night out on the town. I think it looks great but I am certainly not the hair style guru. My hair is fine and no volume, maybe I need some bump its or something to achieve this hair style. Anyway, I like it! :)
Meg, what a fabulous look on you! :) Way to rock out.I also subscribe to W (yes, it's basically a huge high end advertisement, and no, I can't afford any of the products)... but I just love the pictures! (Not the ones with the ladies with their nipples hangin' out--I don't think that's necessary.)Personally, I'm too chicken to try any of the real high fashion looks! I'm sticking with the basics (mostly neutrals for eyes and lips), and occasionally branching out into colored eyeshadow :P
♥ Lipgloss and Spandex: a blog for gals who look good and run fast
It looks totally hot on you, you've got good cheekbones and great skin, and I like the look for something different, wouldn't work on me, though! I like my hair in my face, over my face, just generally convering my face. Otherwise, I would def. try this, I just did it right now, (my computer is next to a full-length mirror) , and I don't even need to tease it, it stands up all on it's own, and I know if I wore it to work everyone would think it was the coolest thing, because we don't see a lot of high fashion hair where I live and work.
i really love your cheekbones ! lol just had to say that. About the pony hawk.. its not really my style.. and some girls in school take it to the extreme but doing a marge simpson sot of look but with a pony tail.. even the guys laugh.. :-| ... so that turned me off of it. But i do think that it's always fun to experiment with new hair styles.. sometimes i feel bored with my hair.. it's either.. up, or down lol. maybe i'll do a plait or something today to spice it up.
I've seen similar looks but never knew what the name of it was! I LOVE it on you! You really pulled it off well! Thanks for giving a list of the cosmetics used. How fun! Looks like you had a blast!
LOVE IT!! looks great on you
I think your hair looks great!!!personally, i don't follow mags n trends very closely, I tend to just pull out bits and pieces from everywhere and mold them altogether

Wow You RockI love your hair And makeupBeautiful
you look awesome - hair and makeup. i think you could wear the hair for day with less dramatic makeup but then again i'm from texas... big hair is acceptable 24/7.as for me - i pick and choose from articles and pic's and meld them together, hope the kids don't laugh and go. but i have the attention span of a gnat. i've always loved the linda evangalista (?) look from the 80's - the uber short hair & big doe eyes look and try to emulate it most often with some modernization.
