ODE TO LIP BALM!

Ode to a Lip Balm -
Oh Lip Balm, My Lip Balm--
How much do I need thee? Let me count the ways,
For a Day in the Sun - to keep from parchment
At night before bed, on the bedside table in my apartment.
To smooth out my lipstick, to keep me from looking old.
I love you in every color - clear, pink, red, peach, or gold.
Katie here! I really feel that this essential, foundational, staple of a beauty item gets really overlooked here at Meg's Makeup! Guilty--all of us! I use lipbalm everyday in so many ways! In the morning before lip color to moisturize! In class, to kill my boredom. When outdoors (with SPF) to protect from the sun! And before bed to hydrate and more! So, today, I bestow upon you my top five favorite lip balms - and you guessed it! Find them all at your favorite Sephora location!
Caudalie Lip Conditioner- ($12) - Shouldn't surprise you that this makes my list. There's a Caudalie product on ALL of my lists, and in my routine somewhere everyday. (I LOVE it!). Anyhow, this lipbalm is really smoothing, not gunky. It is parapen, sulfate, synthetic dye and petrochemical free. (Read: NATURAL) Rise Bran makes the waxy smoothing component. Sunflower oil hydrates and protects. Olive, grapeseed, and apricot oils for the antioxidant components. It doesn't have a strong smell, either - so it makes a great all-around balm.
Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment w/SPF 15- ($22.50). This geniously packaged (has a screw on lid!) lip treatment is super luxrious feeling. You get that super-hydrated feeling of Vaseline, without the oiliness of a petroleum product. It smells and tastes like, what else, brown sugar! Sweet and tart blackcurrant oil cushions the lips with essential plumping fatty acids, while antioxidant grapeseed polyphenols and vitamins A, C, and E provide extra protection. Also available in a tinted red shade for a hint of color!
Jack Black Intense Therap Lip Balm - ($7) - This shea-butter forumla is ultra-moisturizing and the mentol gives you a nice cooling sensation (and helps to freshen breath!) Avocado oil is the hydrating agent while Green Tea soothes and adds the antioxidant punch! Oh yeah, it's SPF 25 too!
Rosebud Salve- ($6) - While some people like the mint or the strawberry, I really feel like nothing beats the Original Rosebud Salve!!! It's been on the market for more than 100 years and they used to sell it door-to-door for 25 cents per tin! Besides being a great lip treatment - it has other uses as well: sunburn, bee stings, diaper rash, or dry knees and elbows! I think it's hard to find such a useful product these days!
If you had ONE lip balm you could grab for what would it be?

I haven't found the perfect lip balm but the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment sounds like the ONE I could be looking for! My lips absolutely need hydration and SPF protection. I wouldn't mind reapplying something that tastes like brown sugar! Just have to be careful not to actually eat the stick!
Fresh Sugar Lip balm actually smells like lemon, not brown sugar, and there really isn't much taste to it. Good balm, though.
I haven't found my perfect lip balm either - my biggest pet peeve with lip balms is when they come in a tin! I just can't stand it - it feels so unsanitary to have to put your finger in the tin every time, and sanitizing my hands before I put on lip balm every time is ridiculous! My perfect lip balm needs to be (to steal covergirl's words) easy, breezy, beautiful. I haven't tried either of the ones you mentioned, so Ill take a look next time I'm in Sephora :)
xoxo
You are so right, sweetxsoul, about hating it when lip balms come in tins! I just don't understand why. I am the same, I cannot think of sticking my finger in the same tin over and over again and then on my lips. Talk about unsanitary. This is the mayor reason why I haven't bought Body Shop's Yes, yes yes lip balm to support HIV awareness. It comes in a small jar...
SoftLips is my perfect lip balm! It has SPF, a nice scent, and some varities even have a hint of color. I've got a tube in every purse and pocket.
I love softlips-mint(I think it wakes you up in the morning)and burts bees beeswax lipbalm(again with the mint)so of course you have aroused my curiousity with the Jack black intense therapy lipbalm also the fact it has spf 25-which is a nice high factor to find in a lipbalm. That said I am a card carrying member of lipbalm addicts anonomus so now I want them all the rosebud salve because its such a cult product and somthing I've been lusting after forever, the fresh sugar lip treatment for the spf15 and the non oily factor-(I just bought an unscented lipbalm that is so disgusting and oily I wiped it off straight away and its now banished to the bottom of a drawer)The caudalie lip conditioner because its natural and all caudalie products are so packed with anti-ageing antioxidants-I notice blackcurrant oil is cropping up a lot lately in natural skincare products.I have a genuine lipbalm addiction-its on my bedside table and its the last thing I apply every night.

If I had to choose between food or lip balm, I would probably go for my lip balm. I simply can't go without. There have been several times that I've forgotten to put a tube in my work pants. Boy, that makes a long day... sometimes I resort to using my hand lotion on my lips (yuck). Other times, I've made the trip to the other side of the airport to get the Burts Bees lip balm (another yuck, but it's the only lip balm in my airport that isn't tested on animals). Oh, I LOVE the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment!!! It's totally worth the $$$. I also love that the container is virtually dog proof. You see, I'm not the only lip balm junkie in my house, my dogs love the stuff. On the cheaper side, I really love the Alba lip balms. They're nice and glossy, and last for quite some time. Plus, their tropical scents take me back to the South Pacific... ahh.
Loooove Rosebud Salve. The all purpose-ness is great. I use it on my cuticles too. I haven't bought them in a while but I love The Body Shop's lip balms too--so many great fruity flavors that smell amazing.
Fatcat have you tried the Burts Bees lipbalm with Pomegranate extract instead of mint? Its totally my go to lip balm, and it has all the sooth of burts bees but a much more subtle scent. I also love Rosebud salve, I used to always use that as a primer before primers were widely available.
Love and Lipgloss,
Kathryn

my boyfriend bought me that burts bees lip balm, I didn't like it. It is very soothing but I cant stand the smell of it idk

I am also on the quest to find the perfect lip balm. I would consider myself a lip balm junkie (yes, i have a problem).....I have more than a dozen (in my purse alone)! I have them all over the house, at work, in car, in living room, next to bed, in dresser, in jackets....everywhere. BUT i have not found one that i love and i have tried quite a few. My dream lip balm would be earth friendly, animal friendly, have a great taste, spf, and above all--make my lips feel smooth and moist!I will admit that i have not tried the caudile or fresh so maybe i'll give them a whirl. Has anyone tried the murad one??? and i'm with you guys--i don't like ones that i have to put my finger in either!
I just I got my EOS Lip balm and I love that but my go to balm is E.L.F.'s therapeutic lip balm. It gives a silky hydrated feeling and leaves my lips happy. I usually put it on before bed and first thing in the morning. Because I am such a junkie I carry my EOS in summer fruit in my purse and use that when I need to hydrate some more. (I probably don't have to hydrate but I love the feeling of my lips after lip balm is applied)
Burt's Bees works great for me, but I can't help but buying all different lip balms! I always get dry lips so I go through a lot. I usually forget to toss one in my purse when I go on a plane, and then it takes days to clear up the super chappedness I get from the recycled air on the plane. For one with SPF, I use polysporin lip balm. It was the only one I could find at the time that was SPF 30. It is very creamy and moisturizing.
I'm one of those people who can't exist without lip balm. It definitely has a certain place in my morning routine and without it I would feel half the freak I am...no seriously, I can't leave home without it. I have to agree though with a couple of you about hating lip balm in tins! Why don't they just all come in practical little sticks? I don't get it and it seems to me, that the best smelling ones - always come in tins:-/.But anyways, I'm good to go with using Blistex lip balm, I used it for ages. They have an edition out called "Fruit Smoothies" and I love 'em.
Make up your beauty-full mind...www.myspace.com/blackdivaworld
Softlips and blistex medex are my two favoritess. They both work great for me. I carry lip balm with me where ever I am. You are right it is a staple. I can do without the lipstick and lipgloss but I CANNOT do without my lipbalm. :)
I'm another lip balm addict AND another one that doesn't like them in tins/jars. My favorite: Softlips. Particularly in Sugar Cookie (it is a holiday scent). Yum! I love that the tube is slim because it is usually stuck in my pants pocket and the SPF is great. Oh yeah...and my fiance likes it on me too because it isn't sticky and it doesn't have any color that rubs off on him. Sadly, I've been having issues with my Softlips. One went through the washer. The top part of the tube in another broke off. I also currently have one that is MIA somewhere in the house. LOL I think I need to pick up more on my next trip to Wal-Mart.
Oh Katie, we are truly sisters in make-up! I own all of these lip balms. They are simply delightful!!*I purchased the Caudalie on your recommendation. It is so wonderful. This is a wonderful lip primer. It is just perfect. It really moisturizes wonderfully without being goopy. Regardless of the $12 price tag I will repurchase this again and again. It is really great to wear to bed as well. But I feel very decedant doing so!*I recently purchased the new tinted Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. It is fabulous! The color is a subtle and pretty hint of rose. It feels luxurious on your lips without being overpowering. It is hard to believe that something this soft could have an spf. And as all Fresh lip products do for me it smells fainlty of Fruity Pebbles. So it reminds me a little of childhood when I wear it. *I also purchased the Jack Black on your recommendation Katie. Loves it!! Again, how could something that has spf feel this good on? I got the newer lemmon flavored one. It smells so real. it is not a fake or overpowering lemmon scent. * I have used the Rosebud Salve for years. It is so moisturizing. And you are right is beyond useful. I also love the vintage tin packaging. It is so pretty. It is virtually impossible to choose just one of these. Which is why I use them all frequently along with a few others. Bu if you really twisted my arm I would probably go for the Caudalie. I feel like it does the most for my lips. But if your really need the spf go with the Fresh. But honestly I highly recommend them all!!! Thanks Katie for a delightful review.
OMG - Jack Black has one in lemon now? I did not know that, but, will have to get it. I love Jack Black Lip Balm - it is just one of the best. As a true lip balm junkie, I would take Rosebud (also original for me) if I could only have one, as it is so multi purpose. I use that a lot as my bedtime lip balm. But, just as a balm, I love Kiss Me in Red by Philosophy. This is such a great one. The color is very bright in the tube, but, looks very light and natural on. I keep a tube with me at all times. One in my pocket, one in bag, one on desk and one in a basket by bathroom sink. (not the sameones, I am very loose in loving lip balm, LOL).I always wear balm under gloss or other lippies.
i havent found a lip balm that sticks around with me im still looking
Great review, Katie! I love lipbalms too - and have them stashed all over. Of the ones you mentioned, I use all of them except for the Fresh. The price has deterred me, but the comments above are weakening my resolve. My favorite is probably Caudalie (thank you for introducing me to that line), but I also can't do without the Rosebud Salve. I don't have a problem sticking my finger in the tin - after all, it's my finger. And I adore the vintage look of the tin. I always carry it with me when I travel because it is so multi-purpose. You never know when you'll have a cuticle emergency!Another one I like a lot but is hard to find these days is Chicken Poop. It was reviewed here a couple of years ago. I like it for its name and for its consistency and effectiveness. If you see, it give it a try.

My miracle balm is the Vivkery & Clarke one on my profile. I got it on sale at CVS for $1.99 and it is my fave balm ever! The ingredients are amazing (coocnut oil, cocoa oil, other yummy stuff). It keeps my lips softer than anything I have ever tried!
I love lip balms so much, I would probably die if I couldn't get a hold of one! My absolute favorite one at the moment is the one from MD Formulations (not sure what it's name is). It gives you super soft lips, and it has SPF 20! Though, I've been dying to try the ones from Decleor and EOS, too.
Although I have always been a confirmed Chapstick girl, right now I am using the Blistex Deep Renewal. It has some great anti-aging properties that I like, here's what they say on their website:
It goes on nice and smooth. I keep one on my nightstand and one in my bag.

I would love to try the jack black it sounds great. I am very sensitive to the sun and if I don't have spf on my lips and am out too long sometimes I'll get a cold sore. They're is a bunch of spf lip balms out there but they always have a really bad taste to them! I'm definitely going to get my hands on some of these. A couple of months ago my lips were feeling really chapped and for some reason all of my chap stick was missing in action. Luckily my boyfriend was on his way home and stopped at 7-11 to pick some up for me. He ended up getting a no-brand name version of berts bee's that works awesome! It is now my favorite one, it has beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and vitamin E. The peppermint gives like a cooling feeling and it really keeps my lips very well moisturized for hours!
I am a lip balm addict. I'm admitting it here, publicly. I have to have a lip balm on my person at all times and have for years, so there's no intervention that will help at this point. My favorite is Nature's Lipcare by Back 2 Basics, but I can't locate it anymore. Thankfully, I stocked up on it some time ago and still have a few sticks left. It comes in Camomile, Green Tea, and 2 other fragrances and works very well to keep my lips smooth and moisturized.
Moema....always a Mom first
I'm cheap with my lipbalms. I'm still a smackers girl! I just can't get enough of all the fun colors and scents! And I've found them at the dollar store in a four pack!
Like others have mentioned I am also one of those who are still on the lookout for the perfect lipbalm. Every now and then I think I have found the perfect one but then I change my mind and try something new. Thanks so much for the reviews of those lip balms. Will definitely have to see where I could be able to get some of those.
i haven't found my perfect lip balm. The Rosebud Salve other treatments (sunburn, bee stings, diaper rash, or dry knees and elbows) have made me think i need to pick these up.
My perfect Lip Balm is by Burt's Bees..either in the original or the Pomegranite. I love that they are all natural, and fairly inexpensive. I also love that the Pomegranite adds a little bit of colour to my lips!
I really like Burt's Bees, but recently the balm just feels like it's sitting on my lips and not absorbing, so I got the Yes to Carrots lip balms in Berry and Citrus and I love them! They're so light and all the ingredients are all natural; the label says 95% of the ingredients are organic so that's good. :)
My VERY favorite lipbalm is Ecolips Bee-free. It is natural and doesn't have beeswax. It has a jojoba base, glides on so smooth and has a pleasant lemon scent. I keep in in my purse and use it daily.
I'm addicted to Burt's Bees lip balms. They are cheap, make my lips super soft, & last a pretty long time!
I really feel like I need to put in my vote for the Burt's Bees pomegranate lib balm. Natural, not tested on animals, in a tube (not a tin!), just the right amount of color, & reasonably priced. Tried many, but still haven't found one I like better!

I agree this is a great smelling and lip loving lip balm..it really gives your lips the smooth healthy feel when you put it on. Plus its not expensive and does the job just as good as the ones that are!
;) Gloss & Gum <3
I am a Burt's Bees Lip Balm with Pomegranate Oil fanatic! It smells so delicious that I literally want to eat the tube. It has an oiler texture than the Original Burt's Bees, which gives my lips a nice smooth texture and glides on so smoothly. It works so well under my lipstick. It moisturizes my lips so well and has a nice subtle red tint. And, for $2.99 a tube, it's a total steal compared to the other more expensive brands.
you must have read my mind. i was thinking ahead to fall and fall trends and i have this matte lipstick and i heard a balm would help in the application. i read a beauty tip saying to apply lip balm, then do your face and apply lipstick last. im going to look into that salve.

I love Nivea's Kiss of Moisture balm, I use it every night before bed. It;s so smooth and moisturizing, not to mention very affordable! I've tried the cherry version, too, but I don't like it as much, and it tends to leave my lips looking kind of stained.
ive heard nothing but good things about this brand and I want to try this asap i just hope its not a hard stick.
Oohh I have heard about Rosebud Salve, it sounds delicious!! Yet another list which makes me a little sad that we are Sephora-less here in Australia!I am super excited that Burts Bees and Dr. Bronner has made its way over here and they'll make do for the meantime!! :)
I cannot go without lip balm - I'm happy to hear that I'm not alone....My favorite lip balm is Carmex - I don't care that it's thick and has a slightly medicinal smell. It contains salicylic acid, which keeps your lips very smooth. If you put a lot on your lips and rub vigorously with a hard washcloth, your lips come out baby smooth, with no flaky skin. I also like using it as a base to turn a heavily pigment lipstick into something more sheer - because it's so thick, it doesn't migrate easily. And if you can take the stickyness it does wonders for dry cuticles as well......
Rie
I love to use my Carmex as a base for my MAC lipsticks when they are too dark. You are right about the medicinal smell but I guess it's something you get used to after a while. I will try the washcloth thing tonight! :)
I have a 12 X 12 drawer of lip stick/gloss/pots/tubes/pans/squeezeme/brushme/wherethehellisthe lipstickbrush(have at least 6 of those). Then there are a few more in my purse, gym bag, beach bag, under the seat of the car. But, when I saw that Fresh had a color sugar lip balm I made a mad dash for my keyboard. AND IT WAS BACKORDERED AT SEPHORA. OH NO YOU DIDN'T! So I put my name on the waitlist (still brings tears to my eyes) and tried to get on with my day. Which included bringing my bathing suit back to Macy's because they had left the sensor on it. And listen, I have enough trouble with bathing suits without a lumpy sensor tag hanging down my leg. But the suit was now on SALE and the saleswoman not only gave me the discount on the piece I brought back, but EVERYTHING on the receipt! So flush with cash I wandered over to the actual Sephora store. And asked just as casually as I could if they had the Fresh lip balm. And when she started to answer me and point to where I could find it, it was all could do not to jump the displays and push other customers aside. I love it. Creamier than the original, just as moisturizing and the color is just perfect. The SPF is a must and the price, well, I can justify that. Later, much later. Listen the first one I bought lasted forever and I can still use a lip brush to dig out the dregs. If I could find a lip brush in the bottomless drawer.
Yep, I'm another balm addict. I haven't tried any of those listed on the post, but I have to admit that the Jack Black and Fresh balms sound wonderful. No matter what product I try I always always always go back to Carmex--and yes, still use it daily despite a recent post warning of the possible harmful ingredients. I don't care! I love the menthol smell, the gooiness of the wax and cocoa butter base when it melts, and even the sting it gives my chapped lips in the wintertime (the pain means it's working, right?..... right?). Having said that, I am trying to branch out. I just ordered Korres's lip butter the other day and hopefully it will be here soon. It had rave reviews on Sephora's site, so I'm excited.
I'm so fickle in my product loyalty, especially with lip balms, because they are usually so inexpensive. Lately I have been loving Anatomicals "Stop Cracking Up", which I might never have purchased, because I am currently engaged in a major love affair with VS Beauty Rush lip balm (the one in a cute little metal tin), but I got it when I turned in my points, and it is wonderful! In fact, the other day, I stayed over at my sister's house, realized that I forgot my eye cream, and put some of this under my eyes at night. The next morning, my under-eye area was still moisturized, and it didn't irritate my eyes at all. It's also a really great lip balm, it has tons of shine and staying power. I will purchase it once it runs out, which will be soon, judging by the way I'm going through this tube!
Lol .. thank you for the referal to Jack Black.. i'm definately getting it for my bf.. I didn't even realise sephora carried mens stuff... opps.. If i had to grab just one chap stick it would probably be Blistex Deep Renewal.. that thing brought my lips back from chapped and bleeding to the softness it is right now. Plus it has a sweet smell and taste :-)
Forget giving the Jack Black lipbalm to the man in your life - keep it for yourself!
Katie
I seriously need a really good lip balm. I have used so many that I have given up looking. I have been using lip venom which is pretty good. but I only have the sample size, and for me to buy the regular size would be moew money then I actually want to buy. I still need to look around.
as a person who doesnt like lipsticks and not too much into lipglosses, i still like to use various lip treatments. My lips are naturally dark pink, so all i need is to make sure they are moisturized. I am tempted by the Fresh Sugar treatment but it seems to be cost prohibitive as of now. I am also very curious about La Mer lip treatment, I have read some very positive reviews about it before. I keep my lips soft by using Lip And Tuck by Osmotics Cosmeceuticals and a scrub with sugar and chocolate in it , it is divine but i forgot the exact brand name.
I just recently got Caudalie Lip Conditioner at Sephora's because of your review on it and since it wasn't that pricey I decided to try it out, and I love it! I apply it in the morning and right before I go to sleep and it leaves my lip feel smooth when I wake up!
It all started with Vasaline on my bedside. But my college roomie pointed out that it didn't look "right" sitting there when her parents visited, I turned to Chapstick. One in every pocket/purse/desk/bedside. Then I branched out and tried more... lol addicted :) I am not fond of mint or expensive. I am now desperately wanting to try Jack Black and the Burts Bees Pomegranite!! Most of my balms are from etailers at the moment and there are quite a few I love... Cocoapink's Lip-E, Aromaleigh's, Everydayminerals, RachelRene on Etsy, to name a few. I even have Avon and Lipsmackers!! My faves are not too dry, not too oily, not too waxy lol. I have the most trouble with spf ones tasting yucky! Thanks for the lemmings :) :)
