THIS JUST IN! TANTEJOAN'S REPORT FROM MAYBELLINE EVENT AT NYC'S GRAND CENTRAL STATION!

Our post about Maybelline's event at Grand Central Station got our Ace Reporter Tantejoan to report to us all live from the field..Or Um..train station!
Take it away Tantejoan! OK, here is my report: I arrived at the Grand Central Rite Aid at 8:05 A.M. to find several women already lining up for their color consultations. When it was my turn I introduced myself to Maybelline Color Consultant Chuck Hezekiah, who could not have been nicer or more helpful. I was careful to tell him I was there representing hundreds of Meg's loyal readers, so he was very generous with his time and expertise. Basically, this promotion is for Maybelline's COLORsensational range of lipsticks, lip glosses and liners. They range in price from $5.19 to $7.19, and include 48 lipsticks, 12 glosses and 10 liners -- a really generous array of shades organized into four groups: Pinks, Naturals, Plums and Reds.
When I met Chuck, almost the first thing he said to me was, "You are very, very lucky." Naturally I responded, "Don't I know it!" but then inquired why. According to Chuck, because my eye color is changeable -- Gigi will insist it is true-blue, but depending on what I wear it can veer toward green or gray -- I can wear almost any lipcolor in the collection. People with brown eyes, on the other hand, tend to stay within one or two color palettes.
Since I was wearing a light salmon color sweater over a white camisole, Chuck showed me shades from both the pink and red groups. Why red? Because that's where the peachy-corals live in MaybellineLand. Eventually we settled on a shade called "Born With It." Chuck explained that whatever the color palette is each year, there is always a shade called "Born With It," because it's part of the company's slogan: "Maybe She's Born With It; Maybe It's Maybelline." Sure enough, the lip gloss we chose also was called "Born With It," so that is apparently my signature shade. As long as I'm wearing salmon, that is. Tomorrow, it could be "Get Nutty." He also provided an important piece of information when I innocently asked if these formulas were "long-lasting." Maybelline has done extensive consumer research, it seems, and long-wearing is not what their customers want. (Take THAT, Revlon, with you 8-hour makeup!) What the Maybelline Woman wants is a color that stays true, goes on creamy and doesn't smear all over her Starbucks cup. And in the glosses, what matters is that the color remains, not just the glossy feel. I have noticed this tendency myself, when I check my makeup and see no color, only shine. These glosses have no sticky feel, but do keep delivery the goods throughout the morning. And Chuck says his ladies don't mind touching up their lips to maintain that colorful glow. So there.
Later in the day, all of 42nd Street around Grand Central would be bursting with vibrancy and the sounds of "Chicago," but my visit was coming to an end. Chuck pressed a card with $1 and $2-off coupons into my hand and told me that discounts to Chicago were mine for the asking. Having seen it 4 times, I demurred, but I am sure he will be selling other participants, with his winning ways and good customer service. I'm sticking with my "Born With It" for sure. Thanks, Maybelline!
Wow! What a fun afternoon! Thanks so much for the feedback and I am going to be sure to get my hands on some of those shades! Thanks so much Tantejoan! Great reporting!
Has anyone tried the new Colorscensational line?

Fabulous reporting Joan!! Are you are very own Lois Lane?? Glad you had so much fun. i wish I was there. I have not tried these yet. But my husband and I were watching a commercial for the lipstick. And he said that he really though that the plums were sexy and that I should wear one of those colors. This was unusual chatter from him. But I think that I will listen to he and Joan and head off to the drug store ASAP to pick these Colorful products up!!
I haven't tried them yet, but their new line seems pretty great. I've heard various rumblings about it on other beauty blogs. They are SO right about the long wear stuff. I absolutely freaking hate it! It's so drying and most of the time it comes off in weird chunk and feels gritty (ew). I would rather reapply 10 times a day and like the consistency than have something that stays on for a long time and feels gross.
YES, I have used this, or I should say..."I do use this", and yes I like this line. I bought 2 while on vacation. I keep them in my make-up case that stays in my purse, so they are always on hand or i should say on Lip. I have the glosses, they feel silky on my lips when first applied and the "gloss" last a little while, the color for both of the ones I have is light, one is a pink color and the other is a coco color. I can't make out the names on the tubes, even with my eye glasses on and a magnifying glass, LOL its just worn off. But I really like the lip gloss, the colors are just enough, (very sexy) and it only takes a small amount, I do talk alot and I've notice that when I apply these i get about 3-4 hours of sheer color.
I found the bit about eye color in reference to lip color to be quite interesting.. I also have eyes that seem to change color based on different factors (what I'm wearing, the lighting, my mood, etc). They're blue with gold rings but people often confuse them for green. I'm not a fan of orange and brown shades of lip color on myself, but I think it's more of a personal preference rather than them not looking right on me.
I agree that long-wearing is pretty nasty! It just kind of sits on top of your face/eyes/lips, and if you're oily like me, then the oil accumulates underneath it GAH. I'm grossed out remembering my run-in with Revlon ColorStay.I would really rather just whip out my gloss/foundation brush for a super-quick touch-up instead of ever dealing with that again.
I haven't tried these yet and I'm willing to bet that it's a long time before we get these in NZ. :P And when we do get them they'll be about 3 times the price you pay for them! Damn. xDFor personal use I am actually quite a fan of Maybelline. I love their wonder finish foundation, their mascaras are fantastic and I have NEVER been disappointed with their lip products. I do however hate their blushes and eyeshadows..I too agree with the comments about long wearing stuff. Most of them are so drying and feel horrible! I would much rather reapply several times throughout the day.
Ace reporting Tantejoan-I love the way he was so honest about the gloss's not being long lasting-most of them aren't anyway.I bought the long lasting maxfactor one when it first came out year's ago and hated it-it was dry and horrible and didn't last anyway. It's not such a hassle reapplying your lipgloss-some of us do it on autopilot anyway.I agree with you about blue eyed poople being able to pull off more shades. My blue eyed sister suit's any shade where as my other sister and I are more limited because of the brown eyes.Discount's to chicago what a great idea-Roxy Hart's the ultimate glamour girl-now there's music you have to dance to-jazz hand's!!

Thanks for the lowdown Tantejoan. I'm mighty wary of 'long-lasting' lip glosses - I'm thinking of the Revlon color-stay that clung to my lips so viciously I virtually had to scrape it off with a scourer. Just thinking about it is making me run my teeth over my lips viciously. Maybelline usually releases new ranges pretty quickly over here, so I will watch out for it.Bit nervy of too much colour on a gloss tho' - because it's something I usually apply on autopilot, the more colour, the more room there is for glaring error....don't want a repeat of when I was about 11 eating a chocolate ice-cream with some friends at a game, and I noticed this cute boy looking at me. I was feeling quite flattered until one of my friends pointed out I had chocolate all around my mouth. Left me with a life-long terror of anything meandering outside the lip line.

Joan - thanks for standing in for us at the Maybelline event today. Wish I'd been there too! I just mentioned in response to Gigi's post that I never use any Maybelline product except for a lipgloss that I like. Well, between the eyeshadow pallette she wrote about - and now these colorscentational lippies, I guess I'm going to have to take a second look!Great reportage!

I was there today with a friend at around 3 o'clock. She tried on a red lipstick, and it looked fantastic. I tried on a funky pink (can't recall the names now) and it looked nice too. Hmm and i do hope i get those free chicago tickets.
I wish I could have been there. Fun events like this do not come around too often in Alabama. We do have a Southern Women's Show that I think all of you ladies should check out. This show visits the southern states. It is where a lot of booths are set up with companies showing their makeup, clothing line, plastic surgery procedures, hair products, jewelry...ect....I went to maybelline.com and tried their "My Color Advisor" and did it for lipcolor. You choose your eye color, skin tone, and then you pereferences about the lipstick itself. They come back with shades from each pallette of neutrals, reds, pinks, and plums. I tend to gear toward pinks and reds, but they have some beautiful neutral colors. When I did it again for the lipgloss there was a color called "Champagne Fizz" and it is a oh so pretty natural color. I need to get some good neutral colors. Some outfits just require a more natural lip than flaming red. :-)You guys go to the site and check it out. It makes me want to reach into my computer screen and pull out all the colors just for me.
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

I have had bad experiences with "long wear" lip colour, and honestly it is not that difficult to sweep some new gloss on after eating. I should give Maybelline glosses another shot, I think I have only one. I like when the company groups them into categories, I sometimes have a hard time picking out undertones so if the company does it for me all the better!
I really wanted to go to this event as I don't live too far from there but unfortunately I was unable to. Sounds like it was really fun. I haven't had much luck with maybelline products in the past but their new eyeshadow collection with the smokey quads has restored my faith in this brand. I feel like they are really improving and am excited to try out more products. :) It would have been nice to have a consultation with a professional as I'm not sure what color lip products work for me and what I can pull off. Also I have very pigmented lips which causes a lot of colors to look the same once I put them on. I know what you mean when you say a few hours later it is just gloss and no color. I hate how that looks. I agree with wanting the color to last longer and not just the glossyness of it. Thanks for letting us know how this event went! Maybe next time I can attend one of these!
That's really interesting about their research result. That seems like such a bizarre result to me....you sure he wasn't just saying that for small talk? Interesting to know. I personally would LOVE a lipcolor that would stay on all day AND not get all over my Starbucks cup...is that too much to ask for?
Oh my girlfriend lives in NY...how cool you got to go...reminds me of Hair N Nail shows I used to go to...the people, the buzz....the fun & excitment!!I have been using CG colorstay lipstick for forever now simply because I like that it stays and stays but sometimes when I want the glossy look...it clumps up. Yucky!I think I'm going to look into this brand of lipstick and see what I find...Your eyes sound like mine...depending on the color they are either grey, blue or a bit green..even amber if I'm wearing tan..I call them my camellion eyes...lol!You had some nice weather while visiting there too.... on no I think I'm addicted to this site....I can't stop reading!!! Help!! :)~

Nice article, tantejoan! The event sounded super fun. Next time, I vote for including pictures so we can all vicariously live through your NY make up experiences! I'm one of the "unlucky" ones with brown eyes, so I suppose I can't pull off any lipstick color. I'm interested to see which palettes we brown eyed girls generally stick to. I myself generally use balms or sheer glosses, but I would love to start to play with color a little more. I'm off to the site to see if I can get my color advice.
Great report, I almost feel as if I were there! How interesting of you to hear that long-lasting "is not what their customers want". I can say that I definitely fall into the camp of women who want "color that stays true, goes on creamy and doesn't smear all over her Starbucks cup. And in the glosses, what matters is that the color remains, not just the glossy feel".I honestly don't mind topping up the gloss factor so long as the colour stains my lips. Thanks again, great job! :]
I've also noticed that blue eyes let me get away with a lot of shades, but I'd attributed it more to how I'm pale enough to be effectively neutral rather than to my eye color. I love the look of these new lippies - the tubes are so pretty! I checked out Born With It and one of the pinks whose name escapes me the other day -- those two stood out in particular as being really pretty.
My #1 concern (or rather, not mine :P) is how my lipgloss tastes. Sure, I don't lick off my lipgloss much, but my man... :P He would throw a fit if my lipgloss didn't taste good. How do these lippies taste?I wish I could have gone, but unfortunately I'm not in NYC yet!
xoxo
My eyes also work like that, the colour changes, or seems to change. I have always hated that I can never answer the question "what colour are your eyes?" properly and with one colour. I guess my eyes mainly go just between green and gray, but some people have told me my eyes are blue or brown too. But like you mention of course it opens up more colours that suit you and that is great! And it is so true about the longlasting lipsticks or glosses. A couple of times I have been fool enough to try different kinds of longlasting lip products, only to be disappointed once again. And like sweetxaoul mentions the taste is always important well, even if I don't have a man. lol
That was indeed some fabulous reporting! : ))Thanks! I have not yet tried these, but I am totally in agreement- lasting lips- just dont work. I have on more than 1 occaision been suckered into the long lasting lip wear and frankly they have all been thrown into the bin! They are terrible! Either they end up being like Paint going on- or they get clumpy and aweful through the day- they dont stay beautiful through the day they just get dull and cracky and terrible. I find them more obnoxious than helpful, and I end up taking it off a couple hours in because I just cant take it any longer! :( So anyhow, Thank you for letting me know that I am not the only one!!!
Tantejoan, I love that you took each and every one of us with you in spirit! True loyalty to the sisterhood for sure! I have always wanted to have a true professional give me the "once over" and choose my perfect makeup palette. I love it when someone suggests a color you would never choose for yourself and then it ends up being your all time fave. (It's how I found my wedding dress.)You can always tell when a woman uses those long lasting lippies by looking at her toothbrush. A girl friend of mine always had her favorite shade ringed around her toothbrush, so funny. Her lips always did look pretty great though!
Sounds like you had a fun time finding your signiture shade of the day! I so wish I lived in New York sometimes and could go to all those little promo events...but tantejoan you made it seem like I was actually there, thank you for reporting!
;) Gloss & Gum <3
wow!! Thank you for the review!! AND THE VERY IMPORTANT BROWN EYE INFO!!! =D =D I have not tried this line! But i do agree that although i like the glossy look.. the color usually doesnt stay!! Next time iam out and about i will definatly check this out!!! <3 <3 <3
I just looked at the lip glosses on the Maybelline site...Um, yeah, that "Sugared Honey" color needs to be on my lips right now!!
Thank you Joan for your in-depth investigative report! Wow, I learned something new from your rendezvous with Chuck! I have blue eyes that change color (sometimes more green, sometimes more grey) depending on the colors I am wearing. I never knew that I because of this that I can wear almost any lipcolor in the palette. Maybe I should be more adventurous with my lipcolor?! I tend to stay in the pinkish-brown color family. Also, I have discovered that maybe I am indeed a Maybelline woman at heart, because I am always on the hunt for a color that stays true, goes on creamy and doesn't smear all over my Starbucks cup. I don't want a lipcolor that I have to remove with a piece of sandpaper, BUT I want something that creamy and doesn't cake and bead up on my lips within minutes of application. Thanks for a great review!
Oh, ladies! Your intrepid reporter is always on the beat for you. My childhood hero wasn't Brenda Starr for nothing. I was especially glad to be able to bring news of glamor and glitz at under $8 a pop, after beginning the week with that sybaritic, need-a-mortgate trip to the spa! As Annette Bening so deliciously mangled in her first screen appearance in "Postcards From the Edge," "I'm just in it for the endolphins!"
It was nice to know someone went to this event and was generous enough to share the expertise :) I am also against long-wear lip products since they have a tendency to dry my lips horribly!
Ah lip gloss, how I love you! I hope they sell this in store because I really like the light pink colors. I took the shade finder test on the website and it said "natural" colors were best for me.

Reading this review have me wishing Sweden was a true part of the U.S. and not just trying to imitiate all the bad parts of it. Then I could be sure to get to try this line within a reasonable future myself!I laughed when I read about their research, because when it comes to lip products, I do love applying them several times a day. I take almost as much pleasure from that as I do from knowing my lips look just perfect. And it is important that they do not stain, since even if I do like rose and baby pink on my boyfriends lips he just can't be made to realise how flattering it is himself. ;)
Joan, what an excellent post! I for one will be trying to get my hands on some of those glosses -esp the one in the picture!
Maybelline is probably my favourite drug store makeup brand. I've loved everything I've ever tried from them. At least from what I can remember.I'm just getting into lipsticks and glosses. I did wear some in high school but didn't wear any through college except for clear or lightly tinted balms. I love the look of get nutty and quite a few of the other shades. I love the price point to!
Very good report! Indeed you are very lucky with your eyes because I have brown eyes and the truth is I can't wear just any color. This sounds like an amazing product gotta get it asap I am desperetly looking for a new gloss.
that's a pretty looking gloss! :)I don't know if it's just me... I haven't tried a lot of maybelline products...but i find their gloss to be really sticky (or at least the ones I tried at department stores) my friend had a maybelline lipstick and it ended up smelling really bad after been in placement for a few months.. Since then i haven't really tried any of the maybelline products other than their concealer and pure foundation (which are great btw!!! esp their acne-prone concealer stick, that baby is a life saver!)

Maybelline always has such nice lipglosses (I currently have one now) and they always give my lips a nice shine after I use it.Not to mention, their bottles that they use for the lipgloss always looks fancy and sophisticated.
i will definitely try to get this!
I loove the color in the picture, I've been looking for one like that for awhile
I got a colorsensational lip gloss in plum-tastic from Meg (thanks!). It is not a color that I would normally buy (what I'd get usually would be the one in the picture), but I like how plum-tastic show up on my lips. My lips felt a tingling sensation when I apply it. The color is very pigmented and is kind of multi-dimensional (silverish/pinkish/bluish sparkles). It's sheer, but able to cover my naturally dark-toned lips. And it is not super shiny, not sticky and has no offensive smell (there is a slight scent). Although I do not own much Maybelline products, I do appreciate "color that stays true, goes on creamy and doesn't smear all over her Starbucks cup." THANK YOU for sending me the lip gloss!
Sounds like fun :)
