MAKEUP POINTS HAD TO BE SCALED IN!
Meg here! I appreciate all of your thoughts and insights and to truly reward the great comments WE HAD to make changes or else I would have to end the program all together. I would like to be call out who is doing what but I wont. Just know that if you are on the up and up you are fine. If you have been adding spam email accounts then you are caught.
I want all of you to keep contributing but if we didn't make some changes then I wouldn't be able to continue this program. Also, once a month cash in is once every 30 days.
So here is the new point system and it honesty bugs me that I have to change the original one. I mean, somethings are just too good too be true and so some of you decided to make it that way. That's just sad.
I think we are still the most generous site on the web and we will bring back more perks and more freebies. These are still pretty generous and hopefully the community will get rid of the bad eggs. If I want the site to survive I can't reward this behavior. I'm not a big company, I'm me, in my apartment just trying to create a great forum.

To that end, I have implemented a per comment type points as follows, but would like your input:

1 - Tips & Tricks

I hope this clears up any questions and weeds out those here just for "free stuff"

I agree with MakeupJunkie, totally! Just putting myself in your shoes right now and I probably would have done the same, Meg. I don't care if we get points here or not, the forum should be informative, helpful and most of all FUN for everybody who joins it!!I do agree that www.megsmakeup.com IS definitely the most generous site on the web. And it's sad but - obvious - that some people try to manipulate our system that way. I hope we all can contribute to sort out the bad seeds so that our community can go back to the great idea it originated from!!!

Meg I think this is a much better system. It will still be really easy to rack up points but it will leave the forum a little more free. I think it will also help with the multiple threads about certain products. I'm not sure how many threads we need on Everyday Minerals. I'm a huge fan of EM but I think there are WAY to may threads on this brand. I think this will also stop new people *myself included I admit* to rack up a ton of points right away from talking a lot on the forum and about products. There are so many threads here with info for me to post on. There is no way I'd be able to rack up as many points as fast anymore now that I think I've posted in almost all of them. I hope I haven't been one of the reasons you felt you had to do this Meg.
I think this is a fair point system. It is a real nuisance that some people want to act like children and take advantage of "gifts." You have created this site for a kinship among women, not for free goodies.I love this site since i was introduced to it. I never knew there was a woman out there that would want to be so generous and gift the things that really belonged to her.Megsmakeup.com is first-class among any blog on the web. i think that's fine. I already have 110 points and I just recently joined and I've only had two friends join. A point for every comment in all categories might be a little to much.
Meg, this is just fine with me. You are exceptionally generous, and I don't want a few bad eggs (or apples) to ruin things for everyone else. Love you!

Definitely fair! You work your tail off and to take time out of your busy schedule and life to run this most generous site, it's natural changes have to be made. It's sad that people are just taking advantage of the site and community really.Lots of other rewards offering sites you have to take a billion years to get a decent amount of points and by than the rewards aren't even as generous as yours. So definitely everything you have set up and you modify are be very generous. But the big picture they're missing out on is getting to know some really great beauty lovers and picking up tricks of the trade themselves reading through the comments and interacting.
I hope that this helps to make things at least a teeny bit easier on you Meg. This plan is more than fair and still extremely generous. Hopefully it will discourage those who really are only in it for the booty! Great solution miss smarty pants!!
That sounds good to me.It's so easy to rack up points anyway. I spend a lot of time on the forums and after the past couple of posts I was starting to feel guilty about having shorter comments. The swag is a nice incentive, but even if you didn't have it I'd still spend a lot of time on here. This is definitely one of the better makeup communities on the internet. Hopefully you can weed out some people who you feel are taking advantage of you.
That's so stupid! I love this site! Never posted before but I have read and *lurked* religiously since like april of 08. You ladies are amazing and I think regardless of the point system or free goodies that this IS the best forum on the web!

Sounds like good changes. It'll be nice to be able to post whatever I'm thinking in the forum without having to second-guess whether or not it's valuable, or feel like I might be thought of as taking advantage of the system if I post a few short thoughts or double-post if I forget something. The points change won't deter my participation, it's not the only reason I'm here at all :) Just out of curiosity, are the other points (pictures, referrals, etc) going to remain the same?

It pains me to see that you've had to make changes to your beloved site just for the sake of a few "bad eggs" who have decided to ruin your beautiful party.As a relatively new person everytime I have read something about your disappointment over new people trying to rack up points it makes me cringe a little. Not that I think I'm in any way responsible, it's just that I'm new and I fear I'm being placed in the same category. Guilt by association and all that. :\I totally understand your reasons for revamping the system and I for one agree with your proposed changes. As some of the other girls have said, perhaps points for comments on *every subject* was a liiiiittle generous.Thanks again for the amazing forum - I'm learning every singe time I log on! ♥
One suggestion, maybe you should remove the top weekly earners sidebar? It makes it seem like almost a competition to earn points quickly to be recognized, which obviously is not the message you're trying to send across.
Good point, ref26 - I totally agree. I actually look at the earners with a bit of disdain, which is totally unwarranted. I just can't help but think of them busting out comments with a prize in mind. :|
I hope this isn't how people see me since I'm on "the list." There are several other makeup-related forums I'm equally active on that earn me nothing whatsoever. I'm just bored in the summer and enjoy this interaction with similarly-interested women. I have gotten invite points from a total of one person, no fake email spamming here! Hope no one gets the wrong idea, i really do want to be a productive member of this community, freebies or no.

I more meant that I couldn't help glancing at the list and feeling a familiar sneer of jealousy mixed with disdain - thinking that surely the top posters were greedy. My brain just sometimes jumps to these conclusions without thinking things through. Call it a 'gut reaction'.♥

I just checked after I posted on the forum, and it starts now!Also, I agree with ref26. The sidebar top point earners area kind of inherently comes across as competitive. I'll admit, I even clicked to check the rankings just because I saw it was there!

Thank you for amending the point system. I actually got nervous while reading the Celebrity Look-Alike forum, last evening. I was wracking my brain for the choicest answer while deciding whether to talk about my look-alike happenings, or to post something over the hilarious goings-on. It really bothered me that answering more than once could violate your point system - and not even 24 hours later you come to the rescue! And as for the top earners list, now that the point system is much more realistic, the top earners will once again be a place where we can see who is contributing most - which helps us newbies learn about your site, and have fun with the people who lend a hand in the wonderful land of makeup. Great work!

I'm sad it had to take all this and you were forced to change the rules but I know the bad eggs will leave. This new point system is exactly what this site needs right now. The new guidelines seem fair to me :) To be honest, I would think it were fair even if you took out the reward system entirely - and I'd love to see who stayed active on the boards and posting - to see who really cares :)In any case, thank you for not totally giving up on us - love you Meg!

Lol, that was my first thought too KT! ;)My biggest issue (other than occasionally rambling on way too much) is that a lot of the time I forget something I want to say until after I hit Save.. so on forum posts if I realized that I meant to say something but didn't, I would hesitate over whether or not to add another post since it was just meant to be one. Now if I forget something I can just add an addendum instead of waffling over it and wishing my mind would work properly in the first place. :)It is sad that the changes had to be made though, I'm sorry Meg. I can't believe people would use fake emails for invites though, that's low.
I agree, creating fake emails is just plain and simply wrong, and the people doing it know it. A few fluffy comments is a whole different story, and I'm sure is at least usually innocent. Either way, I'm glad Meg's taking control over the situation.
It reminds me of the whole EM gift card abuse. People don't seem to realize that they're not just taking advantage of a system or using a loophole or whatever, but they're taking advantage of a person as well. Generosity should be thanked and rewarded, not accepted only to see what else can be gained. Greed isn't pretty on anyone.
Meg- This sounds totally fair to me. I really can feel your agony over this whole situation. I know I do not like to know that anyone is being taken advantage of here!I want to add a extra codicil . . . perhaps you need to make a limit on the maximum points one can earn in a day. So, I can comment all day long if I want to but, I will get NO MORE THAN X POINTS. This may provide you some "insurance" for the future.Hopefully, this will be one of the last times we will have to address this issue! :)

I'm sorry that people were taking advantage of you Meg. Feeling like you are being used is one of the worst feelings, it makes me feel violated. I am happy to hear that you revised the point system, and it's more than fair. I would like to add that I don't think points should be given to rate a product or blog. Why should we be rating a product that we haven't actually used? On one of the blogs there are 19 votes, but only 17 comments. It seems weird to me that someone would vote without commenting on a product, but maybe I'm wrong. champ337, I love your version of It's My Party!!! You're so creative, I'm sure you are anything other than a boring teacher. Very inspiring!
I think that was a very wise decision Meg! Hopefully the people who came on here for "free stuff" alone will take the hint and leave our cosmetic family alone :)But I'm glad that the forum posts don't count for points anymore because come on, I love to talk and I love makeup so basically the forum area is a combination of my favorite two things! I did feel a little guilty that I was excitedly jabbering away and accumulating so many points for doing so because it is something that I definitely would have done anyways; I've gotten more help on here in a couple days than I have from my friends in a few years! The forum is a great resource and since it is my summer break and I just got back from all vacations I will be on here talking to all the lovely ladies quite a bit!Again, thank you for your dedication and commitment to this fabulous website :) You are definitely the most generous on the net!
I think the new point system looks good. Hopefully, like you said, this will help weed out people who are just here to get points to get prizes.I agree with fatcat. It's nice getting points to rate a product/blog entry, but it seems odd at the same time. I vote without commenting all the time, since I often have nothing to contribute, or don't have time to comment, but I don't think I should be rewarded for doing so.
I think it sucks that you had to change it because people were taking advantage of you. :( But I think the new points system is just as great if not better! It actually seems a lot more fair. This site is NOT about getting free stuff. This site is about sharing opinions and chatting with amazing women (and some men too!) about things we're passionate about. I learn new things on here all the time and I LOVE that! The fact that we actually get gifts for doing this is just a super-awesomely-amazing bonus! There really is no other site like this. <3
I think its definately fair and makes me feel better about chatting away! i have been hesitant to comment or post since yesterday morning incase people think i am just doing so for the sake of points-now we can be the chatterboxes that we all are on the forum without worrying!great website, great community.the few bad apples wont stick around after this anyway!If i was meg i would name and shame-if you are willing to break the rules you should be willing to take the concequences of getting caught!
Thank you for letting us know, Meg. It is very sad that there are people who ruin the fun for others... I mean scam/spam accounts? How low can you go? Very very sad people. And it is of course not nice that you have had to deal with all of this.
I too am new and hope that people won't associate all these changes and negative things with everyone who is new. I will try to show that I am here to discuss makeup and other things related to the site and to learn and to share my experinces and knowledge with others. I hope I will earn everyone's respect with time.
The new point system sounds fair to me as well, I have to say I didn't even really know how the old system worked (yes, that is how new I am). As long as people realise what this blog is for the better.

This is perfect because it will stop thing's getting out of control.I mean you could be posting out hundered's of dollar's of product's to people and the thanks you get are people making up spam e-mail account's,I can only imagine how much that irked you-your stress level's must have been through the roof.The new system is very well thought out-I mean you would feel totally guilty getting point's for commentating on Meg's mutt's.Also making the forum point free is the best solution for everyone-because you don't get taken advantage of and everybody can still chat away and offer their advice and imput-this still keep's the community tight while anyone can post up anything without wondering if people think your only opening a discussion for the point's.It's annoying for you to have had to sit down and work it all out and re-jig the whole system but great job.This is still the most generous and unique site out there.Even santa only come's once a year-so got him beat.

Yay - good for you Meg - I actually still think you are too generous - but that's your nature. I personally think points should only be given for makeup review posts - I wouldn't expect to earn points for commenting on 'Dov the Toad', or Michael Vicks, any more than I'd expect someone to jump out and give me a lipstick anytime I sign a petition (and heaven knows I sign a lot), or give a homeless person something.The other thing is, I really think once a month is too much - I don't even want to think of the admin, wrapping, posting that you have to do, let alone the cost involved. Regulars at this site would be thrilled to receive something 4x a year - I know I'd be ecstatic to get a lipgloss once a year (though I still stand by my comment that if international mail is too much trouble - and it is - ask Dawn aka Styelmama - you will have no complaints from me).Having a look at some of the comments I do think many were an unintentional add - I know when I'm busy I say less, but if I'm in between things, I have a lot more time on my hands to go in and look up stuff, and comment on it, and I'm sure many others do the same. I love all the reviewers so much that I like to show my appreciation for the brilliant and inspired reviews they put up. I like this new system, especially the part about the forum. Now I won't need to worry about what I'm writing there, thinking it might not be worth another point. But scam accounts? That's just wrong...
I think that any changes you make I am definitely supportive of. To be honest I don't care about the points system, and do not follow it. I just love expressing my opinions here or wanting feedback and this has nothing to do with getting high points. Its great to be rewarded but rewards come in other ways like the amazing support and feedback with the woman on this site. If you said there was going to be a no points system I would still be on this site as the knowledge that is given comes back to me, and this I feel is a gift in itself.Love, Artcandy

I 100% agree with cugo123 and artcandy. I think this is more then fair and very very generous. I felt bad for getting points for the forum and deals which I didn't think we should of gotten in the first place. Like I've said before points no points I would still be here. I love all the insight that you lovely ladies bring me everyday. I learn so much everyday from all you beautiful ladies. I've been reading everyday but haven't had time to write. Work has been crazy busy and lately weekend are fill with family and friends from Canada visiting. I'm having HUGE withdrawl issues here. :( I miss you gals and guys!Much love and gratitude!lulu

I think the new points system is very very fair, and still very generous of you! Like others said, it will actually make it easier to not second guess "am I coming across helpful enough/does this make me look like I'm just trying to rack up points?" :) That is really pathetic though that some people would create fake email addys!Thank you for doing what you do! =) It's appreciated.

I understand the need to scale back points, you need to protect yourself from people trying to take advantage of you generosity! It is too bad when the few ruin it for the majority, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
I agree with all the wonderful ladies above. The ones that are here to earn free stuff will undoubtedly disappear from the site while those of us that just love makeup and love to share will always be around. I love that the points have been removed from the forums. Now I can get on them and chat without banging my head trying to figure out if it will be OK to post again or not. I agree with fatcat that maybe points should be taken away for rating a post/product. Sometimes I question if I'm supposed to rate the product or the content of the blog post. Bottom line Meg is that you are a very kind and generous woman. It sucks that people took advantage of you and this community. I hope as everyone else does that the bad seeds leave and this subject never comes back up so the rest of us can just be happy to be here with like minded ladies (and men).
