ESSENTIAL OILS!

Sweetassgal here just super stressed out lately. For anyone who knows me in person, I am a perpetually perky, happy and positive person. Sometimes to the point of annoyance to some of my dowager empress co-workers and relatives. The problem with being a sort of modern day Pollyanna is that it's difficult to maintain this level of exuberance day in and day out without people either suspecting you're ready for a white jacket fitting (and I don't mean Armani) or secretly sneaking Zoloft into your afternoon cocktail. Sometimes the stress of life just gets to you and you need what I call "down time" to recharge your batteries. Tonight...I am in need of such an experience.
In the space of exactly 10 days I've given a tea party baby shower, had vehicle damage to my car, weeded my 1/3 acre lot, endured a two day migraine with 7 nosebleeds, been to three doctors appointments, had a CT scan done, have sat through 8 interminably long and boring meetings, went to the vet twice, found out my beloved Harley dog has a compressed disc in his back, had the ceiling collapse from water damage in my spare bedroom, had a work scare that had me thinking I would either be fired or worse sued, and packed my son off to college...all in 110 degree Sac Valley heat. Stress anyone? Roll stress up in a tortilla and feed it to me along with one affore mentioned Zoloft cocktail!
All of this has manifested itself in a major feeling of angst, my shoulders have gone all Larry King on me and are up around my ears and I can't seem to stop shaking. A dear friend of mine at work (and here at Megs...giggelle) suggested I have a cup of tea and just try and relax. What simple advice...and it actually DID help. By the god's I found one pack of "Calming Tea" in our breakroom and drank it right up. Just smelling the freshly brewed chammomile brought me down from derranged Larry King to a slightly more acceptable resemblance of a heavily sedated Gilbert Godfreid. Still, not pretty...and isn't that what this website is about...feeling pretty? No one looks attractive when they start to scrunch their face up like Mr. Godfried no matter how much Kumaara and Urban Decay they are wearing. It may be comical...but it AIN'T pretty.
So if chammomile tea could have this much affect on my mood with just one cup of tea then what might chammomile essential oils do? A quick google search yielded me very interesting results from www.diy-stress-relief.com where they extoll the virtues of a stress free life. Utopia right? Well...if there is a true Utopia out there the road to it is paved with Lavendar, Chammomile, and Bergamot! There is a ton of information about the different essential oil scents and how they affect your body as well as scent combinations and applications. Since I had such great luck with the chammomile this morning I'll be sticking with that scent when I step into a warm (not hot!) bath tonight. 8 drops of chammomile essential oil from my local health food store along with one tablespoon of almond oil for moisturizing will find their way into my water, through my skin, and absorb deeply into my senses. I have learned that the sense of smell is 10,000 times greater than any other sense and that it is the only one that goes directly into your brain for instant stress relief gratification.
Chammomile, lavendar, geranium, bergamot, cedarwood, jasmine, neroli, peppermint, rose, sandalwood and ylang ylang are all excellent stress relievers. Just be advised that essential oils should never be used in pure form and you should test before using to make sure there are no adverse reactions to your skin. Pregnant women should not use juniper, rosemary or sage oils as they cause uterine contractions and those suffering from lung conditions should be wary as well of any irritaing scents. Essential oils can be added to bath water, to a cloth for inhilation, to a diffuser or spray mist for environmental application and even to a massaging oil for an extra lift. Just find a scent that pleases you and an application method that allows you the most relaxing benefits. I for one am looking forward to my bath before bed in a few hours and will be more than happy to let this natural and organic wonder like Calgon says...take me away!
We are all about support here at Megs so if you've got something stressing you out and weighing you down let me know...sometimes a good old fashioned bitch session is all the cure you need. GLAM ON!!

Nice one...! I love scented everything and I'm glad you found something that works well for you! Sorry about hearing that you've been so stressed lately, but I get what you are saying about being glum after so long of being happy, I'm like that too... Probably too peppy for my own good! I exhaust myself haha!
I use lavender & tea tree essential oils in my face soap, scrub & jojoba oil. I use them to mainly help with breakouts but I have found since I started using these particular cleansers & moisturizer that I have been more relaxed and things don't stress me out so easily anymore. Sometimes when I'm sitting at my desk in the morning typing away I take a big inhale and catch just a smidge of lavender. Keeps me level when I'm having one of those mornings. Thanks for all the great information about all the other oils I have yet to try! :)
Well, my sister just got put in jail. She has a problem with abusing prescription drugs. My dad is suffering from crushing depression and some severe and un-diagnosable medical condition. I may or may not be able to have children. Some of my doctor's say that I am in stage 0 breast cancer while others say that I just have a higher risk of getting breast cancer later on. And my MA program is a little overwhelming these days. My life is good I just really do tend to get stressed these days. So I appreciate any cocktail of essential oils or advice to get through! And of course I find that MM is a decent form of stress relief. Good luck to all who struggle with tough times.
Oh kellie...I feel you on this kind of stuff. I'm so sorry about your dad and sis. On the baby thing...I've never been able to stay pregnant so I have no natural children of my own. THANK GOD I have my stepkids...I don't know where all my motherly love would go had I not. To my dogs, nieces and nephews I guess. But now my kids are all but grown up and I'm starting to feel the void but am filling it in different ways. First and foremost I have LOTS of nieces and nephews to spoil so that's always great and I have my dogs. I've also started volunteering at my SPCA and fostering animals which is very fulfilling. If for some reason you find you are not able to have children please know that although I would love a child of my own...my life is not incomplete without it. There are all kinds of lives to be lived and sometimes we just have to find the path that makes us the most happy. MUCH LOVE!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
Kellie, I am so very sorry for all the problems you are experiencing. It sounds as though you have more than your share. I am sending a little prayer your way and hope you can feel the love that's coming along with it. In the meantime, I love Bath and Body Works line of aromatherapy and their products are pretty inexpensive, too. They have some roll-ons that I love to use when I'm stressed or when I'm trying to unwind before bedtime. You might consider having your heriditary profile done to see about your odds of getting breast cancer if you haven't done that already. Much love!
Moema....always a Mom first
kellie--I'm so sorry :( *big bear hugs!* Hang in there...sweetassgal--omg, everything just went crazy on you all at once! *super big hug for you too!*

Sweetassgal, I'm sorry to hear that you've had such a rough time. When it rains, it certainly pours... I'm happy to hear that you've found relief in essential oils. I too am a fan of chammomile tea, it's my go to when I am coming down with a cold or flu, or just feeling under the weather. It had medicinal properties, and helps you recover sooner. I loved working at The Body Shop, that was where I really got into essential oils, becuase they had every type of essiential oil needed to help combat any type of problem. I loved bergomot as a quick pick-me-up. Ylang ylang and rose were great when I wasn't feeling sensual, and lavender would always help me relax before bed. You're absolutly right about not applying the oils, in their pure form, directly to the skin. When we would make custome message oils, body lotions, ect. the customers always wanted us to add way too much oil to the mixture. We had to explain that we were adding essential oils, and that if after a few days of letting mixture cure, they could bring it back and we would add more to it then, as we didn't want them having a reaction from the oils. Anyhow, I really do hope that things turn around quickly for you, the great thing about life is that most of our problems are temporary. You're a strong woman and before you know it, you'll be back to your perky self. I'm seening some good chi your way...
Now I know what to do with all that chamomille growing like weeds in my flower beds! Thanks for the tip, very useful.Wonder if dried herbs in a bath pouch works as great as EO, and if a footbath would be as benefical?
Essential oils can also be really useful for cleaning, as some of them have disinfectant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. This Green Cleaning Guide has a handy table about how to use EOs to effectively clean your house in a way that will smell good and not have any nasty chemicals: http://www.wmeac.org/media/files/global/GREENCLEANGUIDE.pdf
I love essential oils I make loads of things for medical conditions and have 5 books on them they are great !!! Natures medicine :-)
Great review, SAG. Sorry you have had such a rough time. And to you Kellie!Agnes - yes, dried in a bath pouch work great. I do this all the time. My personal favorite is dried chamomille and lavender. Heavenly. And so relaxing. I love everything about herbs, and essential oils. But my favorite are the ones I grow in my own garden.
SweetassGirl -now that's what I call stress,I wouldn't be able to hack it at all.Melissa oil supposed to be good too if your feeling overwhelmed.Have you tried the bach flower remedies, that you put in water or under your tongue. The bach rescue renedy now comes in a spray you can just spray right into your mouth and they brought out a rescue remedy cream that you can use if you skin is stressed.I also read somwhere that if you want to scent your clothes or linen to put a few drops on a face cloth and throw it in with your washing, also l'Occitane lavender linen water and spray are gorgeous.

great article, and i hope that you can recover from all the stressful situations quickly and painlessly :) I am a chronic stress case, so i had to rely on herbal or aromatherapy relief. I can recommend chamomile flower tea (there is no tea, just the flowers), just a teaspoon of it over boiling water and aroma is amazing. The taste is quite smooth and slightly sweet. I drank mine before going to bed - hot, and cold in the morning. it was great. i got mine as a sample from special teas- they have a website with great teas.I also use lavender oil from Bath and Body Works and i love it, it helps me to fall asleep really quick. I also bought a bunch of other oils to suit my mood and seasons. For hot summer day i like Strawberry Patch oil :)When you skin stresses too, you can spray yourself with cold water or some aromatherapy product. I like my Kerstin Florian Neroli water spray very much for hot days when makeup melts off :)I hope these tips will help somebody!
SAG and Kellie, big *hugs*. Sounds like you both are having a tough time right now. Sending love and good energy your way!I love essential oils. Whenever I am stressed, I drink Yogi Tea's Calming, which contains Chamomile, Lemongrass, Licorice, Lavender and lots of other good, calming stuff. I also destress with a long, hot bath with my Eucalyptus/Spearmint bath salts or light a Lavender scented candle. All my stress seems to wither away. The power of essential oils is amazing!
Gem...that Yogi tea is EXACTLY the one I found in our break room. I loved it and it really helped!YAY...I'll pick up a box today.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I should really try some of these. I'm going nuts right now. My boyfriend's family is stressing me out big time. His family is so dramatic and they're constantly fighting/spreading rumors, etc and I just can't take it. I come from a drama free zone. I HATE my job. I work at a call center doing customer service, so basically, I sit there and have people scream at me all day. I'm just sick of it and I need something else. My dad is having health issues. My boyfriend is being lazy about finding a better job. Just blah. Blah, blah, blah. It doesn't help that I had to move 4 hours away from my BFF so we can't even meet up all the time and have bitch session anymore haha.
Brittanyk I'd really recommend getting some EO's in a diffuser to keep at your desk at work. I could NOT do what you do all day so caps off to you for dealing with a-holes. Don't they realize the person who is on the phone is not the cause of their problems! I know how you feel though and it really sounds like you just need to take a load off. I've decided to start yoga and a little meditation along with the EO's to just CALM down. I'll let you know how it goes. Much love to ya sista in stress!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
Awww SAG sorry your having a stressful time. kellie76 you too, sending you some positive energy to you both. All this too shall pass. Great review! I love essential oils. I use them at the Yoga studio I practice, the owner as a bunch for us to use. I especially love the anxiety one, I pour a few drops on my mat, take a few sniff and I'm good to go. One night it took my splitting headache away just like that. They are awsome, I also use at home Lavender (for relaxation), Eculaptyst (for energy), Tea tree (for healing), Oil of Oragano (very good for the immune system), and pepermint oil (for cleaning). Also a glass or a few of wine always helps me when I'm stress out ;-)
Sorry to be picky; but, how about doing a spell check before you post something...or at least look it up in a dictionary. Its not "chammomile". It's correct spelling is "chamomile", and some people use "chamomille" but not "chammomile". Ugh, now I'm stressed out.
I did run a spell check. I do it every time. I'm not sure why the program did not flag it.
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
was a reprimand on the spelling of chamomile really necessary?
Share some of that TEA with me! Pretty please of course! We will have to just start centering ourselves each morning before we start our day, just think of the endless possibilities!Hugs & Kisses SAG
Calmia make a yoga mat infused with lavender oil-yummy!.

potionprincess - that sounds lovely, I will have to check out Calmia for that mat. But then it might put me right down to sleep, aha...
Hello Ladies (and Gents? :) ) let me tell you, I LOVE essential oils. Essential bc they are, essential to mind, body, and definitely SPIRIT AND SOUL. Lavender is known for it's properties and for stress relief, it is second to NONE.I am dedicating this recipe to Kellie and SAG: Diana's tea: bring a cup of plain milk, or reg or vanilla soy milk to a boil then remove from heat, add honey and a pinch of lavender flowers, (they have edible flowers at most health food stores and wholefoods) you can use a tea diffuser or put the lavender flowers directly in the warm honey and milk, steep 5 min. strain if needed and drink. Other flowers you can add w/ the lavender is chamomile and jasmine, Lavendar tea aka Diana's Tea gives you fairy kisses and soft angel dreams. It is my belief that when 1 door closes another door opens, sometimes, it seems like it takes forever, but, eventually it will open. Kick Back, sip tea, and Glam On!!
I love essential oils. I have a set of lavender-vanilla bath products from Origins, and they definitely help me to chill out before bed. They have a massage oil which is amazing. Have someone give you a nice massage before bedtime and you'll be out like a light.
vicci13 -that sounds fabulous, very goddess.Lulu the mat is super pretty too.
PotionPrincess♥
Thanks for the LOL on Larry King style shoulders!!! That was the funniest - heehee...still chuckling. NO stress here anymore, but it's been a pretty easy week so far. Glad you found some relief!!!
Essential oils really are AWESOME. Did you know that some schools (including my daughter's) use certain scents during tests to stimulate the brain? For example, they are big on using minty smells during math tests. Pretty neat huh?Even better than the oils are the real thing, which is why I have tons of lavander growing in my gardens. It grows in abundance and I enjoy tossing a bundle on the dash of my car (the sun heats it up and the car smells WONDERFUL) or stashing a sachet in my clothing drawers, etc. Great post!

I enjoyed reading this article. Lavender helps calm me down too. Before I take a school exam, I put on lavender scented lotion to help keep nerves at bay.
Sweetassgal and the rest of you lovely women, I am so sorry to hear that you are going through such a stressful time. It's always all at once too!I was in bed for the last 24 hours with the most excruciating Migraine. I get them every month, like clockwork, I feel your pain, literally. The only thing that really helps (I've tried every medication known) is a medication called Frova and the repeated use of ice packs. Frova is similar to Immitrex but much more effective and longer lasting, maybe it can help you too.Sweetassgal, I think it's brilliant that you are fostering animals. I once heard about a study that linked an increase in our endorphin levels to time spent petting dogs. Prior to and immediately after a 20 minute petting session, both the animal and the person had their blood drawn to check their endorphin levels. The findings were consistently the same and quite astonishing. Time after time, after each session both showed significant endorphin increases. How great is that? Who couldn't use more of those wonderful, feel-good chemicals coursing through our veins, right? I've always had animals around me. As a child, sometimes they were the only comfort available. After hearing of this study, it cemented something for me logically that I already knew instinctively. I regularly experience this with our German Shepherd, she will calm down long enough to get in bed, and lie down next to me when I am really suffering from a bad migraine. It's as if she can sense the pain, perhaps even smell it on some level, it's extremely comforting. What a beautiful give and take, a lovely example of unconditional love! P.S. Not to be a total jerk, but anyone looking for misspelled words here is kind of missing the point of Meg'smakeup.com.
Oh, I love my puppies! They do always seem to know when you're not feeling well. P.S. Stylemama, I have to agree with you about the "spelling police".
As a massage therapist, I am obsessed with essential oils.. I would never perform a massage without adding some to my carrier oil (which is beneficial not only to my clients but to myself as well). My favorite is lavender, very calming and perfect for relieving stress. The only bad thing about adding a few drops of essential oils is that my clients NEVER want to get off the table :) hey can you blame them??
Scents are one of my great pleaures in life! I start looking forward to my bath by 2pm everyday! It is so relaxing...i just breathe deep in the shower and take in all the scents and it really does improve my mood and relax my body!
WoW sweetassgal, you've had a hell of a time these past days! Just reading about them mad me feel like...awful! Stress can be a real PIA!At work we have Good Old Fashioned Bitch Fest's like some people have BBQ's in the summer!! A-Men to that!!
Stylemama, thanks sooooo much for your P.S. comment. When I read the Spelling Bee post it really bugged me. (no pund intended)On a happier note, I love the smell of gardenias they make me very cheerful. : )Gardenia flowers are often used to promote healing and peace in persons troubled in the body or mind. (that's me) I will need to smell my gardenia oil after this post.Angie, thank you so much for all the wonderful info. I can totally relate to your mega-stress. I also want to say thanks for your last paragraph in bold print.
I've been wanting to write a topic post about my hateful neighbors, but I wasn't sure if that would be okay. I've lived in my condo since 2002, and thought that my neighbors below were my friends. I made a huge mistake by sharing with my neighbor that I have major depression and ptsd. I didn't think it was a big deal to tell her since we were kinda friends and she would tell me how she was depressed about getting a divorce and having to move in with her mother. Due to stigmas, I'm now the "crazy lady" that lives upstairs with her cat. There's way too much to tell in this comment. I will eventually give my neighbors their very own little topic for discussion. My neighbors drain me so much I feel like a bathtub.Rachel

I have been a huge fan of aromatherapy for almost 25 years. I always try aroma or teas before any prescription drug. Of course, there are still times that a doctor is needed.A great site for information on ayurvedic medicine and products that support this is called Maharishi Ayurveda and the site is MAPI.comI recommend every one try oils, teas or other natural ways to help deal with stress, allergies, skin conditions and so on. If it doesn't work, then see a doctor.

Oh Kellie, I hope you feel better. You certainly are having a tough time. I wouldn't know how to get through if I knew my sister is being put to jail.On the subject of aromatherapy, I came across an etsy shop that sells aromatherapy inhalers. The sort that look like those Vicks inhalers that you "snort" when you have a stuffed nose. I think it is a great pick-me-up and the store sells different blends like "Relax", "Rejuvenate", etc. for different purposes. I seriously cannot remember the store name but I think you can search for it on etsy. You can probably type "aromatherapy inhalers" as a search term. :)
REDVELVET, Any negative crap you are getting from your neighbor is all on her. It's nothing more than a reflection of all the "ugly" that resides inside her heart. Some people need to put others down just to get out of bed in the morning and feel better about themselves. Mean people are suckish! Your decision to share was an act of love, an attempt to connect with another human being. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and there's definitely no shame in that either. I hope you don't let one mean person get you down. We all have something we are dealing with, whether it's depression, ptsd, a difficult marriage, anxiety, difficult in-laws or a miserable job, you name it; you are not alone. Especially here....
Oh, Kellie, I'm so sorry for what you're going through right now. It seems sometimes like all the bad things happen at once. Hopefully most of these will resolve quickly and you can put them behind you. And hey, I admire you for pursuing your MA, I started grad school 3 times and never got close to finishing. It's a huge accomplishment.
My gosh, no wonder you are stressed out Sweetassgal. Your comment re Tortilla and Zoloft cocktail made me giggle. Kellie76, gosh your sister in jail and your dad having depression? I always think the harder the circumstances the bigger the lesson. I am sending out some Sparkling Shining Stars and they are falling like dust all over the stress.Another idea I have mentioned on this site before is a aromatherapy machine that has a neon blue led light. Love it. I also think if you buy it in your birthday month the store gives you 10% off. Really it's worth it. Theirs also a aromatherapy oil that I love from Aveda. They don't normally sell that exact one unless you ask for it. Its from the Brilliant line #5. I don't know if any of you have smelled it but I find this smell really relaxes me. Also when I used it in my hair I had some compliments about the smell. Alsosly,Think your in need of some shiny sparkle stars too. Sending love your way for your stressful day. Artcandy I'm off to buy some tea tomorrow, I always forget how much it helps and the idea of putting it on the stove is a great one.

Tan is Love
I've never tried essential oils, but I love some of the BBW Aromatherapy stuff, which incorporates them. The sleep stuff is really nice, especially the pillow mist.
I definitely know where to come and what to do next time I have a hell week. This website offers me so much information on everything girl. Like this should all be combined into a book or something. You gals are great. Also, I;ve been meaning to do some research on essential oils and this was right on time. I'm just very curious about things and I have to know the best about any and everything.

Essential oils are really incredible.I tend to be a bit of a stress head and use Bach's Rescue Remedy (a natural non-addictive) stress reliever which is formulated to help... well.... relieve stress!!Its fantastic.
I've heard great things about Bach's Rescue Remedy. I'm gonna have to pick some up.
Whoops-its holisticsilk that make the yoga mat infused with lavender,Im always mixing those two companies up mabye because they have similar yoga geared products. You have to see there stuff -http://www.holisticsilk.com/ As well as the yoga mats, they have silk lavender infused eye masks, anti ageing pillowcases and the most gorgeous of all are there holistic slippers, they kind of look like ballet shoes-dainty and cute but they have hidden magnets in the sole that give you a reflexology massage as you walk around, there made of silk and embroidered(like chinese embroidery)and come in gorgeous colours including hot pink(their having a sale in some sizes at the moment)and you wouldnt be embarrased to be caught wearing them(like bunny slippers or something)oh and they make a mor macho pair for men. You'll be relaxed but theres a lot of stuff on there you'll want to buy so I dont think you credit card will be feeling very relaked by the time your finished.
