OLAY'S DAILY BODY LOTION PLUS A TOUCH OF SUNLESS TANNER!

Gigi here! I am not prejudiced.  I like Rimmel products.  Other Jane items have enticed me.  Milani’s runway shadows have caught my attention, along with makeup from NYC and several others.  But I’m in a dilemma.  With unresolved eye issues and pain, I am only permitted to drive about a mile from our home.

Driving for me isn’t a habit—it’s pure bliss.  I am given to opening the windows, taking the speaker volume to max, and playing and singing anything from Samuel Barber’s “Agnus Dei” from “Adagio for Strings” to Steve Winwood’s “Roll With It,” the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter,” The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm” to “Highway Star” by Deep Purple.  A more mellow mood will have me chanting “Amazing Grace” or “It Was a Very Good Year.”  My taste is obviously eclectic.  My husband warned that I would blow the speakers and thus I did.  But did that influence me?  No—what rides I have!

Now my territory is limited along with my access to brands.  Our large, sprawling community has one full-service drugstore; the reasoning eludes me.  I feel as if I’m in the movie “Gaslight.”  Am I going crazy or am I imagining it?  When I see a stack of “Jesse’s Girl” boxes lined up on the floor, I return the next day for the contents.  The packaging has disappeared and only one container of eye shadow has been put up.  It’s in a vibrant shade of pink-infused orange (eyeshadow by any company in this hue is highly effective for work—use before approaching your boss and saying, “I think I’m getting sick.”  You’ll be home in no time, and people will give you their seat on public transit to avoid contracting the plague.)  Last week new Rimmel inventory arrived.  Finally, after a year, I would give some mention to the brand.  The boxes sat unopened.  I can’t see the surveillance camera and I don’t want “Local Teacher Found Shoplifting” splattered across our hometown newspaper.  I waited and returned.  Two products were on hangers:  A black mascara, partially opened, and a red lipstick with teeth marks in the wrapping (evidently someone has worse makeup addiction issues than I do)!

And thus I remain with Olay again this week for a timely topic—Olay’s “Daily Body Lotion Plus A Touch of Sunless Tanner.”   Jergens ranks high in this area, but I somehow was not born with the gene allowing me to use sunless tanner properly.  (Disclaimer:  Please note that, when you signed up for this site, you were implanted with a unique cyber device.  If you fry your delicate skin in the sun or in a tanning bed, a signal will be beamed back to one of the MP’s—Meghead Police—and we will be forced to find you and slap you silly.  We remain anonymous at all times.)

I was reading a beauty magazine article about Olay’s version.  It touted it as totally goof-proof.  Obviously they haven’t met me!  I run a small business from our game room, where I do creative sunless tanning, promising to give you a look which is totally unique, with swaths and streaks unlike anyone else’s, auburn palms, and lines of demarcation.  A treatment includes a tie-dye T-shirt (mistakes from using Rit for clothing) and a free “peace” pendant.

I decided to see just how goof-proof Olay is.  I purposely didn’t do what I knew I should do—exfoliate first.  For your face, neck, and décolletage, use your finest products.  For arms, hands, fingers (yes, fingers), legs, and all else (including toes), any will do.  Uneven layers of skin will add to a creative look.  I applied as is.  This is first and foremost a moisturizer, and it glides on with no heavy, slick feel at all; skin remains hydrated for several hours, and the ingredients will not cause blemishes.  The lightweight lotion is available for both face and body, but using just the body formula will cause no harm (around $7.00-8.50, depending on the store, online drugstore, and/or coupons available).

This is best applied as you would any other emulsion, after exfoliating and followed by a shower or bath, when skin is most vulnerable.  Color builds gently, in harmony with your own body’s chemistry. The generous-sized tube I bought was a mistake on my part—it was meant for those with medium-to-dark complexions.  No wonder I saw a subtle change the first day!  It was understated, but also a tad sultry and sun-kissed.  Normally a product for fair skin would leave me looking artificial, but even this worked!  I let one arm and leg go untended and compared, along with one side of my face, to make sure I compared and documented results (oh, my poor mailman, no wonder he drops off packages and runs).

I washed my hands and there wasn’t a hint of orange.  Nor was there fear of ruining bed linens and clothing.  The scent was quite soft and faded quickly; this could be used throughout the year to rid myself of my pasty look permanently while keeping skin silky.  In a week of continuous use, I could build more color progressively and become a bronze icon and braid my hair into Bo Derek’s famous cornrows ala the movie ”10.” Perhaps I won’t.  Moreover, a sunscreen of SPF is added to whatever else you are wearing to shield you from prohibited UVA and UVB rays, and you won’t need to worry about a visit from the MP.  Looks like it’s time to hang up my business shingle.  It’s okay.  I don’t think I ever earned anything except for pity .

Oh, Gigi you slay me!! Your reviews are hysterical! I am so sorry for your drugstore isolation. My small town has about 50 full service drug stores. So I am sure that we can lend you a few. I really look forward to you reviewing Rimmel. I have used a few of their products with great success. My most recent being the Sexy Curves mascara. But I will save my opinions on that for your actual Rimmel review.I really do like the old standby, Olay. Every Christmas I buy my Grandma the largest bottle of the original pink beauty fluid that I can. She loves it but often has to buy herself the generic version. So I try to keep her stocked in the fluid from the gods. I have not yet tried this product though. I am like you often I complete idiot with sunless tanner. I tend to "get streaky with it" as well. The only two that I have tried with moderate success was Dove and Jergens. But based on your review I will gladly give the Olay a try. I wouldn't want to blind anyone with the glaring white light that seems to radiate from my Casper like visage and body!

I suffer from the pasty white skin year round, too. I used to tan (gasp) all the time to keep myself dark. A few years ago I decided to embrace my paleness. (to be healthy and save some money) My face and my arms get a nice glow to them during the summer. My neck and legs always stay pale white though. Everything I've used has either turned me orange or just not done anything. I will have to try this out due to your great review though. Time to get back in the sunless tanner game.

Gigi. I have to switch jobs because of you.  I read your Thursday columns in my office before, I thought, anyone else arrives.  Well, wrong!  My VP, a middle-aged man with no discernible sense of humor pops up in my doorway with his bushy brows akimbo (you didn't know they could do that, did you?) and gives me the Stinkeye a la Mode.  I care not.  I chuckle.  I guffaw.  I snort.  You are too, too much, girlfriend! On to the product.  I now use Xen-Tan, and am well-pleased with the no-stink, no-orange result, but about a year ago I did do a comparison among three of these formulas: Jergens, Olay Quench and Almay's.  All performed more of less as you describe, and I did really love the Olay Quench (your version had not been out then) but I found that if I used a body exfoliator in the shower, I would be pushed back to Ground Zero, or worse, develop a patchy-blotchy look.  For my money (and it is that, after all) I prefer my Xen-Tan.  It costs more, but I only need to use a very little, and with my one-glove method (an unconscious tribute to Michael Jackson) I can apply it where needed and not get orange palms or uneven hand color.  (for those interested in the MJ technique, please see the self-tanning thread in Chit-Chat). I still need to deal with the single woman's most pesky problem, though:  the back!  I bought one of those double-handled strips that are supposed to do the job, but I'm not pleased with the results.  The Saran-Wrap method seems just as ineffective and costs only pennnies.  Any thoughts?

Alright Gigi!  You must have a pain lobe in your brain that activates your sense of humor into warp drive because as everybody stated above...this review was SO FUNNY and extra terrific!  I also busted out laughing at 'teeth marks' and the mailman comment - all your fantastic visual comments!  Fantastic review! AGAIN!  Oh!  And your sheer joy of music in the car....loved it!I stay away from self tanners completely for ONE HUGE REASON!  Self tanners not only make my skin look tanner but they AMPLIFY and make ALL of my ages spots standout to the point that even if nobody had ever noticed them before, with self tanner THEY SEE THEM ALL!  I was so appalled when I realized this, especially on my face!  Self tanner makes all my age spots look like there are various sizes of hideous brown June bugs all clinging to my body randomly and it's just not a good look for me!  I have a LOT of age spots and sun damage.  I had a gigantic age spot on the side of my face for years, it was as big as a quarter and that thing just lit up like a huge glop of poop that had somehow flown off the ground on to the side of my face after I used self-tanner on it!  I was mortified!I remain pale and looking like someone that doesn't spend much time in the sun but after all the sun damage I have achieved over the years - having white skin is actually quite appealing to me.  I will say again, if I could have a do-over I would have NEVER spent the hours upon hours I spent for years getting my body to look like I had painted it with dark brown varnish.   For those of you who remember George Hamilton and his mega tan reputation; well I think back in the day I could have been his long lost sister - I was THAT dark!  In a word now..ICK!The disadvantage when your older of NOT using a self tanner is yes, your skin is whiter but then your veins (spider) are highly visible to the general public!  I have one leg that seems to be breeding spider veins and sometimes people come up to me and say "What happened there?"  After I drop kick them to the ground I grit my teeth and say "It's a ##@@@# SPIDER VEIN!"  Therein lies a moment when I'd like to have used a self-tanner.  But my legs are filled with age spots/sun spots/kisses of sunlight (whatever you want to call them) so like I mentioned, nobody wants to see those amplified especially me!  Sigh. What to do, what to do!  I do think Olay's Body Lotion plus a touch of tanner sounds great and after reading Gigi's outstanding review I'd definitely suggest it to my friends who use self-tanners!

Jeanasina!

Gigi,I will have to try this one. There's another one rated from Victoria Secret that was next on my list so its between the two. Your comment on the Megpolice is too funny! Last week we were at the beach and I ( of course looking after all the little munchkins) Forgot to put protection on myself. I looked like a red lobster all over my body! Gasp. I was sick to myself. The damage to my skin will remain forever. How embarrassing. Thank god for my Mac Prep and Prime on my face. It was saved. I immediately made a promise to myself to put on protection when I get out of the shower first. Artcandy

Gigi, I love you!  Through the pain and all, you maintain the most delightful sense of humor.  I have had an almost identical history of self-tanning, creating the most interesting abstract designs on my body over the years.  I had been an avid sun-worshipper in my younger days, before I knew better.  And I can't bear to wear a skirt when my legs are pasty white.I've been using the Jergens stuff and like the results (but not the smell).  But I promise to try the Olay next.  I've always been impressed with their products.

I haven't had time to visit the site lately because I know that I need at least two to three hours available if I'm going to log on... but when I saw the title of this review I knew I just had to give in. I'm at work so this is dangerous... I may not be able to log off until at least lunch time...Anyway, I'm all about self-tanning! I've always been pasty, never able to tan, although there was a year or two that I tried but it took too much of my time, money, and I was way to self conscious about my skin - even at 18. So I dove into the world of self tanners and of course have made my share of many horrendous mistakes. Last year though, I finally found the product for me after trying everything out there - including the glorified Jergens (which no matter how many times I buy it and convince myself I will love it - I absolutely hate it). All other products left me orange, streaky, stinky, or as pasty as before. But, I have found Dove's Energy Glow to be absolutely amazing. It's perfect - smells great, never streaks, and builds a perfect bronze color (I use the medium to dark even though I'm very light because I like my color to show in one or two applications - not a week's worth). Whenever I use it I get countless compliments on how soft my skin is. Anyway, I buy it in bulk on the internet now but I have been tempted to try Olay's version - I love everything else they make. Now that I know it's worth the attempt, I might just buy it when my Dove stash depletes.Love your reviews Gigi! Oh damn! Now look what time it is already... Just one more review...

Omg Gigi, you're too funny!  You should really start writing a column for a newspaper or magazine.  I haven't used a self tanner in over 10 years... I used to use one from Clinique.  I hated the way it would dye my under garments and everything else my body touched if I didn't want to standing in the middle of my room, not touching anything for at least an hour.  Thin, if I didn't reapply every other day, the self tanner would "wear off" in strange patches, it kind of looked like I had a strange skin disease.  However, your review kind of makes me want to pick up a self tanner next time I'm out shopping...

It's pretty depressing sometimes, I wish I had more options when it came to buying makeup in a closer place.Do you like this better than Jergens? I'm absolutely ridiculous when it comes to fake tanners. I can't even apply Jergens without streaks. Either that or my legs and arms will look great and then I end up with white hands and feet? And if I do my hands and feet they just end up looking ridiculous. Sigh. I kind of feel like I'm just supposed to be a pasty white all year long, haha.

I used this in the spring, to compensate for my pasty skin. I really did like the subtle color, and the fact that it built up slowly covered any goofs or places that I missed. There was no orangey color at all, and the only thing I didn't like was the smell. It still smelled kind of self-tanner-y to me, but not nearly as bad as some of the earlier ones. I will probably keep looking for a scent that I like though....

Gigi, thanks for another great review.  Your writing is so entertaining!  I would like to use a gradual tanner like this, but I'm one of those crazy people that uses different lotions on different areas.  A cellulite gel and cellulite moisturizer from knees to navel, a firming lotion for upper body and a super thick body butter for lower legs.  It's a lot of work, but I think the different products do their jobs in a unique way and give a subtle overall improvement.  So I use the L'oreal Sublime Glow Spray once or twice a week for my faux tan, and stick to my lineup for moisture and treatment.  Maybe once bathing suit season is over, I will go for an all in one lotion like this.  I just wish they would make a self tanning lotion with firming ingredients.

Why can't companies get on the bandwagon and start "dual" purpose packaging like Indi said!  Maybe they think they'll sell more by keeping products separate but if I could buy a multipurpose self tanner, with SPF and firming all in ONE  I'd be clearing the shelves!  They're missing out on a golden opportunity there.  I don't tan...I burn.  And I've embraced my whiteness!  But I admit there are times/occasions when I wish I had a little color on my legs for sure.  I love Olay so its worth a try.Oh...and Kellie...you are SO sweet to take care of your Grandma that way.  I wish everyone respected the elderly like that!

I got this from cashing in my points from meg and I really love it! It smells great and it really does work just like you say and quickly, too! The only thing is I have a bit of a farmer's tan and I need to stop putting it on my arms and focus on the areas that are not as dark. B/c it makes the arms just darker than the rest. There is that hint of sunless tanner smell, but the lavendar and chamomile really hide it. Of course I use the bedtime formula- don't know if Gigi's was that or the regular one. And it doesn't stain my clothes! But you really have to wait about 10 min before putting them on.

I haven't used this product. I have stayed away from sunless tanners since I had orange hands from QT in the 1970's. I got WD 40 or something and got the "TAN" out of my hands. When ever I hear "sunless tan" I see orange hands, smell chlorine from a bottle of lotion marked QT, comb my hair in to the "Crissy Snow" pony tails and check under my sink for industrial strength cleaner, just in case something gets "tanned". I admit it, I have PTSTS (post traumatic sunless tanner stress disorder", I have heard admitting is 1/2 the battle. My stand by consumer reports doesn't have oil of olay in the list of sunless tanners but I have found a report, here is what I found: Laura Mercier got 5 stars, Vaseline healthy body glow got 4.5 stars and Oil Of Olay lotion plus a touch of sunless tanner got 4 stars:

I'm not much of a sunless tanner kind of girl. I've never found one that truely looks natural. No matter how many ppl swear up and down that a product won't turn me orange, I STILL turn orange.
HOWEVER, with that said I'm not a sun tanner either. Anytime I go out I put on AT LEAST 15 spf on my face (but more often I wear 50 spf) Yet, even with constant sunscreen I pick up color when I garden or swim in the pool. I'm no bronze beauty, but it works.

I haven't tried this one yet.  I have some Avon Skin So Soft self tanner that I am happy with.  It is a progressive tanner and takes about three days.  After that, go with every second or third day.  I will add this to my never ending list of must buys.

According to what I have found,  Oil of Olay Daily Body Lotion Plus A Touch of Sunless Tanner, (which got 4.10 stars out of 5 stars from a sunless tan website that reviews all types of sunless tan products) is a moisturizer 1st and gives a hint of sun kissed glow 2nd. Its a moisture focused product that will give a tiny bit of color to make a women look healthy. I was back in the 70's w/ QT!! Oil of Olay Daily Body Lotion Plus A Touch of Sunless Tanner is nothing like that. In '78 I had a friend that actually put iodine in baby oil and made her own QT (QT, quick tan, was a product that smelled like chlorine, made a huge mess, turned you orange, and in the warnings on the bottle said "it will "tan" your clothes, be careful!) Talk about ORANGE!!Gigi, thank you for another great find. U R the best!!!

YES...I've used this and it worked like a charm! I've never been able to tan the regular way...I only turn red. I've tried jurgens sunless tanner and I had the awful orange hue (Oompa-Loompa) then i bought some Oil of Olay ( I use some of their other products and love them) sunless tanner, I was skeptial but I followed the instructions and i ended up with a very nice natural looking tan! I was very timid about doing my face...but I gave in, and it look really nice!  My friends wanted to know "what was up" becaus I never tan...I just turn red, yuckI love the healthy sunkissed look that I get from Oil of Olay! and their moisturizers are great too!!

Thanks for the review! I especially appreciate how dedicated you are to letting us Megheads know how goofproof it was by sacrificing your own skin and not exfoliating, and only tanning half of your body!!! Now THAT is dedication to your readers :)I personally like to get tan pretty fast but am already medium I guess? So far my favorite product is Jergens Express because you get tan right away! However, it does leave me feeling slimy and tends to be more prone to streaking and fading in sweat spots like your elbow-pit. If I'm stubbly, the express version also tends to leave little dots :(My mom loves the regular Jergens because she can apply it like her regular moisturizer and it doesn't streak. It's also a little less orange than the express version. I've also tried the Jergens face one and it's great. But my face is usually darker than my bod anyway, so I don't need it for face.I just bought a Banana Boat dial foaming tanner and can't wait to try it. I'm hoping for a nice dark tan pretty quickly, without streaking, a formula that's absorbed quickly. I can handle the smell if it works :PAlso, my friend recently tried the Victoria's Secret spray self tanner. It gave her a nice tan fairly quickly, although you do have to be careful when applying it, and make sure you do it evenly, as she ended up quite splotchy. I'd still consider trying it though...

I love this stuff, I found some on clearance a few weeks ago and bougth 4 bottles thinking maybe it was being discontinues. It's ok though, seems they are just revamping the packaging. One of the things I like most about it IS the smell, I think it smells like summer skin, that may be a weird description but I find that the way (some) people smell after being out all day in the warm summer air is wonderful. Also major plus that it doesn't color my very light skin a weird orange shade. There's enough oomp loompa looking girls around...I don't feel the need to follow suit.

I just recently tried Avon's version of this. It's in their SkinSoSoft line, and I was afraid it would have that strong, perfumey scent that I remember from my childhood--my mom would put it on us to ward of mosquitos, and it was over-powering, I can see why the mosquito's stayed away! Anyway, it's very easy to use, leaves a nice subtle glow, and claims to have firming properties. It's too early to tell after one use, but I am going to re-purchase, it definately made an improvement in the smoothness of my skin.

I'm using the Jergen's version of this because of recommendations on the site, and I found that there is a slight bit of streaking.  Maybe next summer I'll try this one instead.

I love this product as well.  I have tried every product on the market and this one is absolutely the best.  Trust me I have paid big bucks for the more expensive lines.  And yes I confess in my younger younger days I use to lay out with baby oil on my body and aluminum foil held under my face.  I still am somehow challanged when it comes to my ankles.  I swear it looks like I put it on evenly there but it never seems to come out just right.  But, hopefully nobody is staring at my ankles

What goes wrong at the ankles?  Splotchyness?  Darkness?  If you get splotches, try exfoliating before you apply the tanner.  If your ankles get darker than the rest of your legs, then that may be because the skin is absorbing more of the tanner since it's dry.  Try this trick on rougher, drier parts like knees, elbows and ankles: apply a little lotion on that area to hydrate and then apply the tanner.  It should make it come out even.  Good luck!

I've been eyeing a few sunless tanners lately, but the only one I own is an Avon one. It dies a pretty good job of darkening my skin, but the color faded very quickly... I also tried using it on my face and it broke me out, so hopefully this will work better! Olay is a good brand, so I am looking forward to trying it! Plus, it's in my price range. I'm not willling to pay much for a sunless tanner so this is perfect!

MOVE OVER BO DERECK, GIGI IS IN THE HIZ HOUSE!Love you girl! Sadly, no matter what method or brand I try, all self-tanners end up getting all over my clothes.  I guess when you are as sweaty as I tend to be (sad and gross, but true) self-tanner is NOT your friend. Sigh.....

Gigi - you had me weeping with laughter on this one.....the tanning bed thing - I am always lecturing people on this - for some reason (like we don't have enough sun in South Africa) women here just luuuuurve the sunbed. And when they hit 40, you can see how much they luuuuurve the sunbed, because despite crepey neck and decolletage they think if they blast for longer on 'the device that should be banned', no-one will notice the wrinkles drooping pitifully into the well between their bewbies.....it's a sorry sight, especially with extra low cleavage. Much Love

Ladies, since we're discussing the amazing/woeful tanners, I've come back with a report on Banana Boat SunDial self tanner.... it's a lotion, not a foam. It dries reasonably quickly. However, when I woke up this morning, I was a little orange. :( Not Lindsay Lohan orange, but there is definitely an orange undertone. I'd recommend trying something else.

The problem with progressive tanners is the patience required - it's been years since I felt that I had enough time to use one! I never feel that I can be as sloppy as I am with basic moisturizer. Lately I've been using Jergens Express and a Hawaiian Tropic self-tanner, but I'll be honest, even with my medium-tan skin I end up bright orange. Maybe it's time for me to clench my jaw and give it another try...Great review Gigi! Glad you found something that worked!

I may have to give this a try.  I'm currently using Ulta Brand's gradual tanner with little to no results.  I'm pale, but super pale, but white, so I use the fair skinned one.  Maybe I should try the medium toned one for some better results.  I don't know, I'm stuck between this one and the new Jergen's foam one.  I'll see which one is on sale this week :)

Just like most of you, I love this product. I have been using it, along with other progressive tanner/lotion combos for about 2 years. For someone who has tanned TWICE, ever, including living in Florida for 4 yrs., I am used to being mocked. "Casper", "My Wild Irish Ghost", and "Put some pants on! Your legs are blinding me!" are favorite utterances of my olive-skinned friends. Olay's moisturizer is nice and thick, which does mean you should wait awhile for it to absorb before putting your clothes back on (or sitting on a white comforter at your mom's house). But it's not orangey at all, which is huge for those of us dependent on self-tanners. In my opinion, it's much more cost-effective than high end aerosol products. Super quick, easy, and mess free. Rock on.If you have sensitive skin, I would stay away from the facial version. I bought it and only used it once. Nothing serious, just a mild burning sensation that I wish to avoid in the future.
