bc

Meg here! Back to Cali and my Boston trip was great! I will post some pictures of my trip. I learned a very valuable lesson. Always bring a buffer! Megken traveled with me and it made a world of difference.

The really only frustrating part of my trip was I had pretty limited computer access so I'll be playing a bit of catch up this week! There was another annoyance. Not so much frustrating as it is just a part of life as a lady. Yup, about 10 minutes before my nephew's 3rd birthday party there were the start of some awful cramps and then everybody's favorite "friend" flow showed up. No big deal. I was at my sister's house. She's 28 years old. I'll just use one of her pads or tampons. I look under the sink. Nothing. I look in the closet. Nothing. So I call her.

Meg: Eileen, where are your tampons and things?

Eileen: Oh, I don't have those anymore I'm on a new birth control and I never get my period. You should go on it.

End of the story. I found a tampon in my makeup case (Thanks Period Guardian Angel.)  Beginning of the story? "I never get my period anymore."

I am a birth control disaster. The pill (I don't care how mild it is) makes me absolutely batshit crazy. A complete and total loon. I am totally allergic to latex. Like, hospital trip emergency room reaction to latex so I tried Depo Provera. I had a girlfriend that swore Depo was the answer to my prayers. Only get your period 3x a year? A quick shot every few months? She had no side effects so I thought! "Let me at it!"

My ex said when we use to go out to eat he never knew why he would have me order dinner. He said he should have just ordered it to go. I would spend the entire dinner yapping to him and other people and sipping my cocktail and taking a few bites. Then the check would come, I'd get it in a doggie bag and eat it the next day.

About a month into my Depo I would eat the entire dinner when we would go out to eat. I would also eat my appetizer and every bit of my dessert.

Two months into my depo I would eat my appetizer, dinner dessert and then look at my ex and say "Are you going to eat all that?" As I longingly gazed at his meal.

I guess we knew something was really wrong with me when I would get up in the middle of the night to microwave Stouffer's French Bread Pizza's at 2am for a "snack." I WAS STARVING!! The Depo was making me so hungry and I was putting on 2 pounds a WEEK!! I guess I maxed out around gaining 35 pounds. I couldn't stop tht shot quick enough-except it seems to stay in your system forever! I swear it took forever to get it out of my body. I'm sure Depo is a great birth control. I mean who is going to want to have sex with a women that will eat you out of your house and home! Embarassed

I'm not sure what form of birth control my sister is on. She said it was new so maybe it isn't my arch enemy Depo. If it is a shot or an implant that releases "estrogen" or any hormone I am completely wary of it. Remember the Norplant disasters in the 90's? So I'm going to be 33 years old and I haven't found a birth control. I'm not looking for children but maybe I should keep a at-home STD kit. Is that weird? Is it romantic? Yes, things are progressing nicely! Please swab here!

OK Ladies! Fess up! What should I be using-seriously-what do you swear by?

So glad that you are back. I think that everyone was having Meg withdrawals. What a great idea to bring Ken on your trip. I hope that it really did make things better and that you were able to enjoy your sister and your nephew. As far as birth control goes I am afraid that I am of no help. I am on ortho simply to try and regulate my PCOS. It was so bad that I had to have a blood transfusion a year ago. So the ortho is helping that but I feel that it makes me a little crazy. And I notice that I am a lot hungrier with it. But now I have to consider whether it will increase my breast cancer risk and if I am able to and should have children now. So I am having my own birth control crisis right now. Whlile it is different it still sucks!

Meg, your sister's solution sounds like Seasonique or one of a number of similar ones on the market.  They do reduce the number of periods a year, but there are some drawbacks, and yes, one of them can be weight gain.  The other is that while on it and sexually active you should be having regular pregnancy tests, just in case, and of course using a serious anti-HIV strategy -- either a condom for your partner or regular testing -- because no birth-control pill pprotects against HIV/AIDS.  The upside of these pills -- no injections -- is that the result is usually a reduction in adverse side effects -- lighter flows, less PMS, fewer mood swings.  The biggest reason you should not use birth control pills, Meg, is also the biggest reason you should:  you cannot take it and smoke, so if you want to use it, you will have to quit.  Now.  And all your loyal friends who want you to stick around will toast your decision.  TJ, 9 years smoke free and counting

I have tried Yaz, Ortho and a few generic birth control pills, all caused irregular periods, insane mood swings (PMS²) and blood clots that make your monthly cramps feel like birth. So now I ride the period train like everyone else, I also still use smelly latex condoms or (GOD help me if my mother ever reads this) the "pull and pray" method.

I think this just HAS to be said (and no offense to your sister...many women commit this faux pas) but there should be some sort of LAW that says ALL women regardless of age or current period status should keep a small stash of tampons or small pads in an easily accessible place in ALL bathrooms of their house.  ESPECIALLY the guest bathrooms.  I can't tell you how many times I've been at someone's house for a dinner party or what have you and been "surprised" by my period only to frantically go through all drawers and cabinets to come up empty.  It's HORRIFYING!  I keep a stash in every bathroom (including my sons) so that anyone coming over to my house doesn't have to be embarrassed and ASK for one or even worse...have to leave the event taking place to go buy some.  Not to get all Bree Van De Kamp-Hodge on your asses but a good hostess always anticipates her guests needs.  I don't know it for sure but I'm positive at least a few guests have REALLY appreciated that little container of tampons I keep with the air freshener in the cabinet next to the toilet!I did Depo and it turned me into a FAT PSYCHO.  I gained 15 pounds and got SO SO depressed I seriously had to remind myself to breathe.  I haven't tried it but the Seasonique birth control gives you a period every 3 months (once a season...get it!).  I've been trying to get pregnant for six years with no luck so birth control isn't really something I worry about any more.  All those years I was TERRIFED of accidentally getting pregnant....who knew I had nothing to worry about!

My doc told me to go get a fertility monitor and use it "in reverse". It doesn't do jack for STDs but if you know you are clean and your spermmate is clean, figure out when you are popping out an egg and either don't get your love on a three days before, during and three days after  (swimmers live for 3 days) or for those who are latex tolerant, get a raincoat for those days. I guess you can use a spermicide during that time, too, but I can't honestly say I've seen the love mousses at Rite-aid lately.

I too was on the Depo Provera like 10 years ago and SAME thing I wanted to eat everything and the weight gain. I would gain just by looking at food. Plus I was such in a Biotch mood, it wasn't pretty. Also it was very new at the time and I started getting scared of the side effects in 10 years or more what would it do to my body so I stop and went back on the birth control pills. Then 3 years ago I was on this yoga, being all healthy kick and I stop my birth control. I made sure my husband was aware of my desicion. And I was doing the calendar thing. LOL... Ya I got pregnant 5 month later but It was ok, we had been together and married for a while and yes my husband was a little chock, Ok really Chocked. My 76 year old Irish neighborg keeps telling me it wasn't an acident, it was meant to be. :) Because like Meg, my husband didn't want little him's runing around. But he now loves our son more then anything in the world and is an excellent father. So after I had my son I had the Mirena installed ;-) HURT like HELL! But it doesn't hurt for everyone. Next time if I do this again I will ask to get "numbed" down there. But my cycle stop and it was great and worth it. I didn't worry that I would forget to take my pill and not having my cycle was worth it right there. I have a lot girlfriend that did the same thing and they are loving it. I kept it in for about 2 years and just had it removed last December for maybe #2 in the horizon, hopefully soon???

Every kind of pill makes me blow up like the Pillsbury Dough Boy - I have a hearty enough appetite as it is - I don't need to give it any incentive. My vote, for those of you lucky enough to be getting lucky is for condoms (STD's eek) and if you really don't want a whole lot of rug rats EVER - sterilize - tie them tubes. Quick, easy and almost no chance of failure (there was a story in a tabloid once, but I'm sure it's the exception). Plus none of the baggage that comes, quite literally, with the pill.

So glad the trip went "well" and I'm glad megken was with you to provide that shoulder of support you so needed! This is no longer an issue for me,one I'm grateful to have behind I might add...God...I remember some of the "original" pills and they made you sicker than a dog, there were very potent! I had my tubes tied after 2 kids in my 20's: it was very controversial back then but my GYN understood that I was "finished..." It was not a popular decision and my Irish/Catholic family was appaled.I was finished in spite of them. :)My sister recently went to hell and back brecently due to her Mirena: it caused an infection that spread to her fallopian tubes and she had to have it removed after a stint in the hospital because of the raging infection. Not fun.My stepdaughter gained 40 pounds in 6 months after haveing the Mirena inserted...she recently said "enough" and had it removed as well.I know it works well for some but I have heard many horror stories regarding this device.I think sometimes greed and marketing get in the way of effectiveness and safety in this area! It would seem that this is one place phara companies might focus on getting their chit together...still seems to be a "negative" that many men might consider "taking care of biz" and they do all us women a diservice by not coming up with products that are more reliable without terrible side effects...is it too much to ask? Not like it's a "new issue" or anything,LOL! Always a tampon on hand in my house...it's a bummer when you have to use 1/2 roll of toilet tissue and many prayers to get you to a store! ;)

I'm very grateful for that. I have my period every 21 days like clockwork. I don't really want to mess with mother nature. I'd probably become a crazy fat bitch if I did. I have heard that there is a pill called Lybrell that works pretty well. I'm not gonna lie and say I haven't thought about asking my doctor for some.....BTW, I agree with sweetassgal about keeping tampons/pads available for guests. Yikes! That is so scary Mjsred. Maybe I want get another one put in after #2 when or if it does happen, after reading your post. I DID SAY after the first time I wouldn't do it EVER AGAIN cause MAN it hurt more than giving birth and I had an emergency c-section and 18 hours of back labor. I told my husband after I got it in, "you are going to get snip, if this thing ever comes out". LOL... But so scary, I definitely wouldn't want any infection or other side effects. I didn't gain any weight on the mirena but I heard some awfull things like hair lost. And only one of my friend had to remove hers because she was getting major migraines. I agree it's definitely not for everyone. I so agree why is it so complicated to come up with some reliable products out there. Thanks for sharing your sister and step-dauther experiences. And Yes Men should take care of biz on this one. ;-) I always keep tampons and pads at both our house even when I wasn't getting my cycle with the mirena. I even had a basket in the ladies bathroom at my wedding with some in it, of course they took everything out of the basket but the tampons when we went to retrieve the basket after the reception. I think it was the guests from the other wedding after us ;-) LOL That's so funny and so true! I had to use 1/2 roll of toilet tissue before, it's horrible. Now I make sure there is always something in my desk at work and in my purse. :P

Oh baby I feel your pain!  I am on the pill right now, we want another bambino so they have me on it to regulate my flow.  I had forgotten just how HUNGRY it makes me.  I am starving all the time now and have gained 10 pounds in 3 months.  I was totally on a losing streak, losing about 3-5 pounds per month.  I mean COME ON, it's so not fair!  Before the pill it was condoms and the rhythm method for Stylepapa and I.  I'm guessing, the pill your sister is on is the one where you don't take the "inactive" pill portion of the pack for 3 packs.  At the end of the 3rd pack you do take them and usually have your period.  However, it is usually pretty light and very short. Resulting in 4 periods per year, very nice.  If you can find a pill that doesn't make you want to eat your mate it's a great form of oral contraception.  Sadly, there aren't a lot of options for someone with your latex allergy and reactions to OCP.  I think I would probably keep trying different pills until I found one that didn't make me freak out.  My 10 pound weight gain sucks, but it's nothing I couldn't change with more time spent at the gym.  When I say "more" time at the gym, that really means, ANY time at the gym.  So glad to hear that your weekend went well. There's nothing like embarrassing your family into behaving, is there?  They never had a chance with Megken around.   I can't believe I never thought about putting tampons in all of the bathrooms, I am so embarrassed!  They will go in today, thanks for the lesson Mrs. Van DeKamp-Hodge.  I'm always learning something new here.

Depo Provera doesn't work well for all women. My friend not only got really chubby, she almost became violent 1 minute, bawling the next. I am 45 now, when i was younger i tried the pill, condoms, foam, the diaphragm, (that was a joke, how does this damn thing go in? fold it in 1/2, then what? That doesn't feel right, hmmm. I never did figure that stupid thing out!) spermicide, the rhythm method, do u know what u call a women that does the rhythm method? Mom!! I finally got a tubal ligation at 23 after 2 kids. Me, tie my tubes, Dr you're 23, me i have 2 kids, Dr you're 23, me I will be 24 and I don't want more kids, Dr u r 23 tho, I finally convinced him to do it.Meg, an American company came up with a device, but they only sell it in Germany and UK etc. why, bc Birth Control is big biz and big money. This device is $150, you pee on the wand, if you're fertile, the light blinks red. The device lasts a life time, or a long long time, women love it, bc like us, a lot of women are sensitive. BC, especially the pill, made me sick sick sick!! Americans made this device but bc it lasts so long and bc phamacies don't cash in, they don't sell it in the USA. I would really recommend you either order one online or if you have a friend or family member in UK have them send you one. No Hormones, shots, pills, surgery, or latex. You just pee and that is it!!

While I have had many crazy experiences with the pill, such as the night I gained 10 pounds in water weight (Nordette) and the year in college when I was mad...constantly...(Tri-Levlen), I really can't imagine my life without it.  Without the "right" pill, I mean.Prior to the pill and I had bad skin, not Accutane-worthy, but consistently broken out and splotchy from past blemishes.  I also had miserably irregular and heavy periods.  Although by the time I started taking the pill when I was 18, my cramps weren't as bad as they had been when I was 11-13, I still felt like I was bleeding to death every period.  This is probably a little TMI, but I had to wear TWO overnight pads (I didn't really figure out the tampon until I was 16 or 17) AND those Always panties that were out at the time to make it through morning classes.  Then, I had to change for afternoon classes; then, change as soon as I arrived home.  I basically had to wear a diaper.  And with a diaper came...you guessed it...a diaper-like rash that was almost as bad as being uncomfortable from wearing pads. And that's not all...My periods were terribly irregular.  I knew I wouldn't have another period during the 3-4 weeks AFTER my period stopped, but after those 3-4 weeks, who knew?  I'm pretty confident that I have a naturally long cycle anyway (aside from irregularity), because I was able to sort of pin it down to between 34-40 days (but not always or like "clock-work").  However, I would begin having PMS symptoms at the time I would for a regular 28-day cycle....so I was basically in perma-PMS.  Because if it had been 2 months between periods, you could bet that I had been PMSing for a good 6 weeks. The days before the Pill were so miserable, that I have absolutely no desire to ever go off of it.  In fact, the thought of possibly returning to those days in order to perhaps try for a baby, makes me shudder. The Pills that work best for me are Ortho-Tri-Cyclen or OTC Lo and their generics, Tri-Sprintec or Tri-Nessa.  Though for me, Tri-Sprintec is the better generic.Prior to the Pill, being female was a burden.  I felt awful.  I looked awful.  I was constantly bloated and miserable.  Now, a period is of no consequence.  I barely notice it.

I have no need for b/c at this point in time.  I'm wary of the Pill though and especially wary of that Seasonique.  Four periods a year?  To me, it seems like if you menstruate roughly once a month then that's the way God and nature intended it.  So I have no plans to mess with any of that.  Plus anything that messes with your hormones like that kinda makes me nervous.  Anyhoo.  I did a little research for ya.  Got on Google and looked up condoms.  Did you know that there are other types of condom materials besides latex?  There are lambskin condoms (not made from skin but the intestinal membrane.  It does have 'pores' if you will but they are too small for sperm to pass through.  But they are large enough for STDs to pass through.) and polyurethane condoms and a new type made of polyisoprene, which is supposed to be good for people allergic to latex and polyurethane.  There are barrier methods as well.  Chemical and physical.  An example of a chemical method would be a spermicide and physical example would be a diaphragm.  The diaphragm would require a fitting to ensure a good fit.  Of course, you use a diaphragm with a spermicide.  Spermicide is only good for two hours though and is a one dose for one hit kind of a thing.  So if you used it and wanted to go again, you'd have to add more.

Your sister might be on a progesterone only pill, like I am, to have no periods at all.  For me its is great because there are no hormone swings--just constant level--and thus reduces many of my migraine headaches.  It is kind of weird at first to not have any periods (I was on Seasonal/Seasonique for awhile with period every 3 mon), and the bf got all freaked out and would have me take a pregnancy test every month. After a while though you get used to it and don't worry about it.  I love, love, love not having a period at all!  I still have a few tampons and liners in my bathroom in case of spotting (which I haven't had) or friends needing them.

I, like you have a latex allergy, so lots of the solutions don't apply to me.  But I agree with you and your readers who feel that there should be a birth control method that doesn't turn us into an alien-waiting-to-happen. Maybe the food manufacturers would have to raise the cost of food and treats, when we don't eat as much, but it would be worth it - especially when buying clothes that actually fit each month.  And you are so right about having feminine supplies on hand for guests.  I make sure to have something at work as well -there is no such thing as a reliable hormone.

Meg, I am so glad you're back home.  I think it's fair to say that we all missed you terribly!  Glad Megken went with you.I struggled with all types of B/C in my younger days.  When finally my girlie problems led to a hysterectomy, I was happy to hear that it meant no more periods!!  I don't recommend major surgery, but losing the "friend" was a major advantage.

Megheads--while I'm too embarrassed to talk about my own BC etc., I really appreciate you talking about it :) I go back and forth between thinking "TMI TMI TMI!!" and being really relieved to have some wise ladies to talk about it with. Short story: one of my teammates went in to get the HPV shot... the nurse apparently gave her Depo instead and she had her period for like 3 weeks. She was also on the pill, b/c she didn't realize during that time that she'd been on Depo also. eek! Now I'm supercareful whenever I get injections, to verify w/the nurse what they're giving me.

I did the Depo shot because all of my friends told me told me that it was the best thing since sliced bread.  None of them had thier periods with Depo, but I had my period for 3 months, it was hell.  Since then I've done well with the generic versions of Ortho-Tri-Cyclen.  However, I really don't like the idea of putting hormones in my body because of all the possible side effects.  The wand that Vicci wrote about sounds really cool.

I use Yaz, but since youve had such bad experiances with hormonal methods... why don't you try a hormone free IUD? You sound like a good candidate - your old enough that you don't have to be stealthy about it. It costs a lot up front because it requires an operation to insert, but it lasts about 5 years and you can remove it early if you want to.

Oh, P.S., for STD protection - trojan just came out with a new plastic condom, and there are very cool commercials on TV. But they've been around for a while, and are ~ as reliable as latex, and actually a bit thinner!

Finding the right birth control is never fun. I was also on the Depo shot for about a year and a half and it was an absolute nightmare. The weight gain, the mood swings, the crazy periods. But the worst was my sex drive. I had none. I didn't even want to "take care" of myself. I didn't want to be touched or kissed or anything. I felt so bad for my poor husband and he requested I go off it since we didn't have sex because of the dank thing anyway.I'm now on the NuvaRing and I LOVE it. It works perfectly for me and makes my periods light and bearable. I can't feel it, he can't feel it, and I sometimes forget I'm even on it. I would reccomend it to any woman to at least try.

Welcome back, Meg!If your sister is having NO periods, it sounds like she's on Lybrel (lybrel.com). You just take it year round. There are no "off" pills. She could probably also take a regular pill year round skipping the "off" pills, but in order to skip periods, the dosage has to be at a particular amount, so not all pills are great candidates for that. (Also, if one intends to use pills that are meant to take monthly to skip periods, the doctor would have to write a special note on the prescription saying that refills need to be more than once a month, along with a larger prescription than usual. A lot of insurance companies will not refill pills more than once a month unless a doctor indicates it on a prescription.) In order to have 4 periods a year, there are Seasonale and Seasonique. I'm pretty sure the noticeable difference between the two is that the former has a week of inactive pills, while the latter has a week of low dose pills. While on those weeks, there will be a period. I've been on Seasonique for a year. It has been a little unpredictable. First cycle (3 month cycles) there was spotting all over the place! Second cycle went as it should with only minor spotting. Third cycle was absolutely awful!!!!! It was like 2 weeks of the tampons! Fourth cycle went like clockwork w/o any spotting at all. I'm a little tired of the lottery, so after talking to my doctor, we decided that I should take a regular monthly pill for 2 month cycles. I'll go from 4 to 6 periods, but maybe I'll get rid of a lot of guesswork and spotting. I have to finish this last pack of Seasonique that I had already ordered before switching.I've tried A LOT of BC: Ortho-Tricyclen, Yasmin, Mircette, the Patch, Nuvaring, Ovcon 35, and Seasonique. Whew! I think that's it, but I may have missed one. My main problem has been trying to find a type and level of hormones that keeps away spotting. I've never had the weight gain or crazy problem (knock on wood). I never had cramps b/4 I started BC, either. Now, they can be quite awful. Before BC, I never knew when a cycle was coming along. One month later? Three months later? Would it be a mere speck or would I think I was going to bleed to death? They were SO unpredictable! The year b/4 I started BC, I think I had 4 periods. I got my pills in a January and waited until April to get a cycle so I could start them, and it was so scant I almost didn't notice I had one! (Maybe I could've started them earlier, but I was 19 and listened to my doctor's, "Start them the Sunday after your next cycle starts...") Ovcon 35 has been the best pill, next to Seasonique. The Patch was scary because the corners could peel up, or it could slide a little. I had to be so careful with showers and lotions. I was always afraid it was going to fail. (Also, there are some controversies regarding its safety.) I LOVED the Nuvaring, but alas, it did not love me... My cycles started almost exactly the same time every month, and only lasted 3 days without cramping. It was awesome. Turns out, though, I'm built a little small down there. I had to readjust the ring almost daily. Men are not supposed to feel it during sex, but my boyfriend (now husband) did, and it did not feel good to him. When I went for my annual check up, the doctor wondered if I was in a lot of pain. I was not, but evidently, my cervix (I know, TMI) was inflammed as all get out! Turns out, the ring hit it constantly. The doctor made me stop using it. How sucky! Stupid low cervix.I'll restart Ovcon 35 on 2 month cycles when the Seasonique is out. I've always been really good about taking my pills on time, but I wish I had another option. It gets old taking the pill all the time. I hesitate to take a shot or get an implant. I hear they can be awful with spotting. Oh well, guess I have to wait for science to come up with something new.......P.S. I too concur that all women who expect other women guests should keep spare pads/tampons, regardless of her own periodlessness. I once was a bar manager at a restaurant, and the District Manager (male) voiced having a problem with keeping a stash of tampons in the office-- He did not win that argument, my friends! Can you believe he had the nerve to say that the female staff should just know when they needed to bring in feminine products? We should just know, gals! Oh, he got an earful. And the tampons stayed.

How sad that the NuvaRing did not love you! The only times it bothers me are when it gets pushed down right near the vaginal opening, in that little rough part where all the nerves are. I asked my gyno about what if my husband could feel it and she said I could take it out, as long as I put it back in within three hours. I usually never go that long with it out, but sometimes it can get twisted in a way that irritaes his skin or pinches him and we take it out. I know that doesn't help your particular problem, but it may help someone else who has a husband (or boyfriend, or just plain friend, or tall dark and handsom stranger) who is a little sensitive to plastics!

I have to update this:My "math" was all wrong. I wrote this thing out so quickly, I wasn't paying attention.I'll be using my new pills for 3 consecutive pill packs, NOT 2. That will give me around 5, NOT 6, girlie times of the year. Also, I was going to start Ovcon 35, but it's on the most expensive tier of my insurance (I just switched to my husband's). So, I have an appointment w/ my doctor this week to pick out a new pill! How fun.

I love nuvaring!  I have been singing the praises of it for about 5 years now.  It's a bit tricky to get in the first time or two but now it's totally fine.  I have had to take it out from time to time due to shape and piercings but I got over that a long time ago.  Sometimes it will also work it's way out and become an ill fitting penis bracelet. (Oh sorry that may be tmi) But all in all no strange side effects, wait my boobs did get bigger, Damn! No cravings, no more moodiness than usual, no fat ass.Get yourself one and try it, you can take it out if you don't like it, unlike mirena.

Ugh, I can't go on BC either because I got crazy. One minute I'm screaming at my boyfriend for like putting the forks away wrong then I'm bawling because I'm such a hot mess and I'm being mean to him. It just doesn't work for me. I can't deal with it.So, that limits up severely. Right now, we just use condoms. Luckily, I'm not allergic to latex, so we don't have to worry about that.

The pill used to make me crazy too and I didn't use it for 11 years for that reason.  Then my doctor talked me into trying a new one that came out a few years ago.  I hardly ever get my period, maybe twice a year and they are super short.  Also no mood altering side effects.  The name of the pill is Micronor.

I hate having a period every month, but then again I don't know of any lady who likes it. I have never really used birth control besides condoms. I know some of my girlfriends have successfully used the pill to stop some of their periods. There are a million more new birth control things out there though. I should ask my friends what they use. I have seen some of my friends go through crazy mood swings, gaining weight, and increased appetite, just because of the particular birth control they were on. With everything I've seen I'm almost too scared to try any other firm of birth control.

You can use any birth control pill continuously (just start the new pack instead of taking the fake pills).  It seriously saved my life, my periods were horrible & irregular.  I never have to worry about PMS, cramps, or tampon emergencies, not to mention my acne improved quite a bit.  What a relief!  You may have to try a few pills to find one that works for you, but it's worth it.
