Hello! it’s Jeanasina here a.k.a. Sunhat Stella (summer time alias) your ace reporter on location in Minneapolis!  These days, especially during the summer months I completely make every attempt to keep the sun off of my face and body.  For YEARS I would spend every weekend and my two week vacations taking my lawn chair to the beach along with a good mystery and I’d sit my bikini covered buttocks down on my lawn chair which was always strategically placed IN the water, just on the edge of the lake. I always had the perfect people watching spot and would sit there for at least 8 hours a day!  I would bake in the sun until I was a beautifully glazed brown!  I am a good tanning candidate and it takes a lot for me to get a burn. What a gift huh?  My mom, in the early days of my life was a tanner too!  She had the darkest tan of anybody I ever met!  When she was around, she would put on some short terry cloth shorts and a matching terry cloth halter top (much like the look of the 1940's) and lay out in our front yard slathered in OLIVE OIL!  Truth – I kid you not!  It probably was the secret to her fabulous tan but man oh man, olive oil on baked-in-the-sun-skin is SO not a good smell! Gagging as I write this…Obviously I inherited the tanning gene.  A few years ago I finally realized that what I was doing to my skin was STUPID and dangerous.  I did use SOME sunscreen during these marathons at the beach and it usually was Coppertone #4 because I loved the smell and figured it did do a little something to protect me from the sun’s rays!  It was my token acknowledgment to sunburn prevention.  More times than not, after I had been in the water, I wouldn't reapply sunscreen unless I felt something was starting to blister! I was always able to acquire a very dark tan and because of this I pretty much worked my skin into a brown frenzy which in later years resulted in sun damage and age spots.  These gems are a daily reminder that I was SO STUPID to bake my body like I always did.  Let me say if I could have a ‘do over’ I’d SO have never ever spent all that time frying my poor skin!  Sunscreen really was about ‘amplifying’ the sun so you’d get even tanner rather than any real type of skin cancer prevention back then!  People actually put iodine in their baby oil or suntan lotion to make their skin appear even darker back in my youth!  Yes, even I tried the iodine thing at least once!  I remember going to the drugstores and smelling each lotion and sometimes THAT was my criteria for which suntan product I'd take to the beach - if it smelled yummy I'd buy it! What's wrong with this picture?

There is no magic cream I can put on my body that will overnight bring me back the lovely youthful porcelain skin I began with.  I have to deal with what I have now because I helped create it and those spots are all over my body except for my buttocks because THAT was the only part that was constantly covered!  Who hopes I am including a photo of my buttocks with this review?  Every time I see a young girl with unmarred lovely white skin I want to run up and tell her how fabulous her skin is and to never start tanning!  I try to put on sunscreen every time I go outdoors these days but it’s not second nature so I have to really think about slathering it on before I go out.  There are SO many brands out there to chose from.  Lucky for ME that Meg has sent me several lovely sun screen brands to test out!  Today I’m going to give a little shout out to Epione of Beverly Hills SPF 30 Full Spectrum Sun Protection!

The SPF 30 Epione sunscreen comes in a 2.0 oz tube (not very large so a person might use it up quite quickly, unfortunately).  It has a lovely creamy texture and it’s somewhat thick, so when you rub it in, you feel like you are truly getting some high quality product on your skin!  If you touch the area where you put the sunscreen about five minutes later, it’s still there!  You really feel like it’s making a protective barrier wherever you put it.  I filled my bathtub up and got in with the sunscreen on and my floaties and pretended I was playing at the beach for an extended period of time to test it out. (This could be true - you don't know...)  I noticed that the water kind of bounced off of my skin which, again, showed me that the product was undoubtedly providing an invisible barrier from unwanted sunbeams.  I also noticed that my skin feels incredibly soft wherever I put on the lotion and not tacky in any way.  I was hoping for a more tropical fragrance however. But the fragrance seems to leave the area within a short span of time so my thoughts are – what is the purpose of this product – TO KEEP BAD SUNRAYS OFF OF ME!  It’s not a perfume, so there you go.  The next time I can even bear to be outside in the sun – it’s 95 humid degrees here today (I'm melting) – I will be conducting an actual sun rainin’ down on me experiment to see if it truly blocks the sun and I’ll report back immediately with my results on that aspect!

The Epione sunscreen was created by Dr. Simon Ourian who is the Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills.  Dr. Ourian was unhappy with the quality of sun blocks offered at pharmacies & department stores so he created his own formulas which comes in very simple packaging.  No bells and whistles, just a quality product.  Dr. Ourian points out that sun damage destroys collagen and skin tone, causes wrinkles and discoloration and generally makes people look older!  I wonder if he needs a poster child for all those things - I happen to know someone!!  Dr. Ourian is currently making it possible for not only his patients but non-patients like yourself to purchase this highly coveted sun protection!  He suggests you pair it up with Epione Signature Series Restoration Firm and Fade cream for optium results.   I have to say, this sun protection cream is very luxurious and feels much like a high end face cream!  I read that you can remove it with soap and water!  WOW!!!!  If you actually have to REMOVE it - that's outstanding!  That means this stuff stays on you like like duct tape sticks to your boyfriend's favorite ripped out tennis shoes!  I can't wait to give it a real challenge!  It contains SPF 30 and provides both UVB and UVA protection.  It's priced at $45.00 a tube.  Speaking of duct tape, I'll totally be hoarding this lovely creamy $45.00 sunscreen to myself and keep it duct taped to my thigh so nobody else can use it.  Have I mentioned how outstanding it makes your skin feel?

What do you ladies think of Epione's Premier SPF 30 Full Spectrum Sun Protection?

This sounds like an excellent sunscreen.  How does it compare with the Doctor T's Supergoop?  That was a big hit if I remember correctly.  I am bad, bad, bad about sunscreen.  I don't wear it every day.  (Except for the SPF 15 in my face lotion.)  As white as I am, I know I should but I hate the smell and the feel of it!  Recently, I tried the Neutrogena ultra sheer sunblock spray and it seemed to work well.  It was definitely sheer and I didn't feel that yucky sunscreeny funk that you normally end up with using another product.  Now if only I could remember to apply it every day...I bet I could if I paid that much money for it.  I wouldn't want it to go to waste!

I am a HUGE fan of the Neutrogena Sheer Sunblock spray.  Not only is it convenient to carry and apply (no goopey mess), you don't have to rub white goop into your skin, and its super soft on your skin.  I LOVE it and have purchased a bottle to keep EVERYWHERE.  I'm never without sunscreen anymore because of it.  Great for applying on little one's too because you don't have to rub in an WAIT so long for them to get in the water.

This stuff sounds great! Is this for the face or body?  The size of the bottle is only big enough to get two uses out of it if it is for the body, since the experts recommend 1oz. to cover the exposed areas of the body.

Meg sent this in my package and I fell in love! I hate sunscreen but this really does feel more like a lotion, its not sticky and it doesn't smell. I do think the price is pretty high for a sunscreen that size.

This is a great post! When I was younger I thought in order to get tan I couldn't wear sunscreen. As I got older I realized how BAD the suns rays are and that wearing sunscreen didn't mean I wouldn't get tan, it just meant I wouldn't get BURNED. Aaaahh wisdom...

Jeanasina - another great review from you!  Your history of tanning sounds like it came from my life.  I was totally a sun-worshipper in my youth; unfortunately, I usually burned before tanning.  So I believe sunscreen is important.  However, I often don't use them because I just don't think about it unless I'm going to be out in the sun for a long time.  I know - foolhardy!  I'm trying to reform.  I guess I'm a recovering sun-aholic.  Ladies - any suggestions about a really good (but more affordable) sunscreen that makes you WANT to use it?

Seriously...still to me the BEST is the Neutrogena Sheer Spray.  This stuff is SO easy to use there is no excuse and you can take keep it in your car and not worry about lotion spilling.  When I know I'm going to be out and about I just give myself a quick spritz, pat it quickly into my skin and I'm good to go for hours.  You can get it for about $9 too.  I get it in SPF 70!!!!

I checked out Consumer Reports to see what they had to say about sunscreens and here is some of their advice – good things to know concerning sunscreens:   When you rub sunscreen on, you assume you’re guarding against sunburn, skin cancer, and wrinkles. But research indicates that consumers might be getting less than half the sunburn protection shown on labels because they don’t apply enough. Moreover, our tests of 19 sunscreens found that some provide minimal protection against ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation, which can cause skin cancer and wrinkles. UVA is not considered in the sun-protection factor (SPF), which refers to protection against UVB radiation, a different wavelength that can also cause skin cancer, plus sunburn. What we found: In theory, an SPF 30 sunscreen lets you stay in the sun, unburned by UVB, up to 30 times longer than without it. But people typically apply about 25 to 75 percent less sunscreen than the amount used in most sunscreen tests., What to do: Choose a sunscreen with maximum protection against both UVA and UVB rays--preferably one labeled very water resistant or waterproof, with an SPF of at least 30. Be sure to use enough. To get the labeled protection, an adult in a swimsuit needs to use 2 to 3 tablespoons of sunscreen. Reapply it every two hours and after swimming or substantial sweating. Spray sunscreens, over lotions, have made a surge in the market in the recent years, no doubt due to their ease of application and lack of gooey residue left on hands and skin. However, consumer reports has announced that spray sunscreens have hit the bottom of the list as far as effectiveness. Since they have the same effective ingredients as lotions, these findings lie in the application process. Simply put, they don't apply as easily and still require to be rubbed in with both hands. For many, this takes away part of the appeal of the spray sunscreens. When talking about sunscreen, it is important to note that a sunscreen should be effective in preventing BOTH UVA rays and UVB rays. Sun protection factor, or more commonly known as SPF, is the number of protection offered only to UVB rays. Consumer reports also noted that there was absolutely no correlation between effective sunscreen and price. Many people assume that a higher priced sunscreen must be a better product, but testing has shown that is not so! In fact, sunscreen products that are only available at doctor and dermatologists office, products that are priced much higher, tested near the bottom of the pile.
I wanted to add this caveat here - the lovely sunscreen I reviewed today has not been reviewed by Consumer Reports because it's so new! Based on the Doctor's reputation and absolutely fabulous feedback by everyone who has been to his clinic for procedures and products - this sunscreen no doubt would be a top pick with Consumer Reports and meet all their criteria!  From everything I researched before writing my review today it's my opinion that nothing this man does is less than stellar!

This stuff spreads nicely though and smells good, not overpowering. I really don't like sunscreens that smell super strong.

This sounds like a promising sunscreen but $45 for 2 ounces seems rather expensive. One of the things that I dislike about sunscreen is how is always seems so heavy on your skin. During the summer I like something that is light because I'm already so hot and gross. In my early college years, I used to lifeguard for one summer and would apply sunscreen in the beginning of the summer and by the end I wouldn't need it to maintain my bronze. Huge mistake. One of my friends is an esthetician and let me see my skin in a totally different light. She had some kind of weird blacklight that she put on my face and I totally freaked out. She recommended using certain products now so in 10 or 20 years or whatever I'm not facing those challenges (like skin discoloration) then. I would recommend this to anyone who's still sunbathing and needs  a reality check on what this is doing to your skin!

I'm also a freak for Neutrogen's Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock in 85...that's right kiddies, almost a total block out! I never leave the house these sweltering 100 degree days without a coating on my chest, neck, ears, and arms...you can burn here just doing errands,I chit you not! Very light and clean to use! Dr' T's Supergoop is a staple around here as well, husband loves it and it's about as good as it gets!On my face,I use a foundation(Dior SPF 15) with sunblock at all times and OVER the Neutrogena if I'm outdoors for any length of time...unlikely for a while,LOL! I'm partial to the Neutrogena only because it doesn't break me out. :)Just received the Epione and am dying to try it out...Jeana always gives the "skinny" whether things are good, bad, ugly,or awesome and the "olive oil" visual had me cracking up!I remember those iodine in the baby oil days but honestly,I've stayed away from the sun for a LONG time and wish I had NEVER baked as well!!!You favorite word with sunblock should be "re-apply..." :)

Another great review! This sounds like my youth tanning story too. I was very stupid in my youth when it came to the sun. I too, use baby oil and Iodine and YES canola oil once. YIKES!!! I was burn crispy bacon. My nickname for a while back in the days was brown bunny. I would love to sit at the beach for hours and baked. Not anymore thank god. I still LOVE the beach but I do put sunscreen on now if I go, my skin has become a lot more sensitive too now that I'm getting older and maybe because of all the damage I created from the sun.I did received this fabulous sunscreen in my point care package from Meg yesterday. I did put it on my face this morning even if it's pouring rain here and haven't seen the sun in DAYS.... I couldn't wait for the sun to come out because it could be another couple days as per the weather forecast :( This sunscreen felt so nice, not greasy at all, it does feel more like a lotion, it smell very natural and it does feel like a very high end product. I can't wait to actually try this in the sun if it ever comes out again :(  "Here comes the sun...la la la la... here comes the sun.... I say... it's all right......." I keep singing but it's not COMING! sniff sniff

In the summer, I hardly ever leave my apartment without sun screen. If I do, I start to burn within 15 mins or so, it's kind of sad. I use "cheap" sun screen because I go through it so fast. I'm a big fan of Aveno's sunscreen for everyday. I like Coppertone's Sport in the spray can if I know I'm going to be going outside and getting sweaty or going swimming. Those work really well for me and are at a pretty low price point.

Great review!  I wear sunscreen year round, my preferred is Coppertone Sport SPF 30.  But having said that, I just got a bottle of Clinique's Spray and am going to shortly be giving that a try. Although, since I use so much, I am pretty sure I will be going back to the Coppertone.  I agree with what you read about people not applying enough. I heard that some years back, and I do make sure I appy enough. And I make sure my daughter does. I am pale and burn, never tan. She inherited my husband's ability to darken easy, not burn, but, I still make her use Sunscreen. I know she gets tired of me saying it, but, some day she will thak me.

i can also tan easily - i usually stay out without spf from 9am until 10am or so on the beach and then slather it on in 45 or 50 and hide in the shade as well

my mother does skincare and she always told me to stay out of the sun so honestly i didnt think twice about it since those were the rules since i was a baby... now that im older i understand that was the biggest greatest beauty advice i got. not only does it prevent wrinkles, but it sure as hell reduces chances for skin cancer, etc.!

I really love this sunscreen!   I was wondering the same thing about whether it was for face and body or just face?   I have just been using it on my face mixed up with my Epione Hydrating moisturizer.   It absorbs quickly, leaves my skin so soft and the smell is just.. LOVELY!   It's been raining here in lovely New England for 17 days this June, so I am not too sure when I will be using this on my body at the beach. :(   Since I tend to coat myself from head-to-toe, I think this baby will be gone in one trip to the beach.   I wish I could afford to keep buying this stuff for the summer.

I LOVE THIS STUFF!  I use the EPIONE on my face and chest and then Dr. T's Supergoop on the rest of m'bod.   The Epione offers excellent sun protection and even though it is thick it still absorbs nicely.  You just have to be a bit patient. As you rub it in, it warms up and then thins out and sinks right in.  It makes your face feel really nice and smooth.  No problem wearing it under makeup either. Now that I have used this I am totally jonesing for his Firm and Fade Cream.  This man is a genius!  Thanks, Meg and Dr. Ourian for this great product.

I also received this from Meg.This is a really great product. It is incredibly thick which made me worry about how my oily skin would handle it. So far I have had no problems what so ever. As others have said prior to me you just have to be patient and work it in to your skin. It feels very luxurious and expensive-which it is. But the quality sure is worth it whenever you can afford it. It does make your skin feel great. But I still have to do the ultimate test and wear to the beach. I will post whenever I get the chance to be released from this mountain of books and hit the beach! But I don't anticipate having any trouble with this. I think that it will offer top of the line protection while making my skin feel like a million bucks. If you can afford it i highly recommend this. if you can't as SAG says you can't beat the Neutrogena Sheer products-whether you use a spray or lotion formula. They work very, very well! Great review Jeanasina! You always keep us informed and laughing!

But whats done is done, now I am on the right track.I have used Epione daily since I got it. I like the creamy texture of the sunscreen and the aroma is very nice, light and summery. I haven't used it on my face, just arms, decollate and legs.

I tried this sunscreen for the first time on my face today.  I put in on my face over toner and serums.  I then put on the sunscreen, and topped it with my primer and makeup.  I used what I would call a liberal amount and let it soak in for about 15 minutes before the primer and makeup.  I felt great all day, I was in the sun most of the day doing errands and then gardening.  I felt this had to be one of the best sunscreens I have ever used.  I just assumed it was for the face and that is where I will keep using it.  At $45, putting it on the body would be way to expensive for my piggy bank.I rate this a must buy and consider it equally as good as my favorite, Amore Pacific IOPE Sun Block White, SPF47 which I have been using for the last few years.

I can't believe you sat in the tub for a while to test it out. At least that shows it really works. Maybe I'll try that with my sunblock hehe.http://saimese.blogspot.com

I'm a huge fan of Environ sunscreens - I think there are a handful of places you can get them in the States - this sounds great - but maybe a little expensive for the amount you get. I go through sunscreen like a baby goes through diapers, so cost is a factor. Good sunscreen is a must. I wonder if the fact that it has to be removed with soap and water makes it likely to flare up acne - I've had that before with sunblocks that are water resistant.

I definitely have to give this a try!  The sun is so dangerous and with to many great bronzers and self-tanners out there, there is no need to burn and crisp anymore.  I'm one of those weird people who love the smell and goopy texture of sunscreens lol.  However, I only wear SPF 30 on my face and that's it through out the normal day.  I guess I should start covering my hands and chest, because I read that's where aging first starts to show.

Jeanasina, thanks for the great review! And for all of the great information on the amount of sunblock we should use. I definitely should have been better about using high SPF sunscreen when I was outside (oh, I used tons of SPF4 tanning oil, applied regularly, but still). Even though I'm 23, I'm thinking that my sun habits now are going to show up on my skin for the rest of my life! I'd better be more careful.Unfortunately, Epione sounds like it's more than I can afford. I'll have to take up SAG's rec of Neutrogena Sheer Spray! I've been using Aveeno SPF 70 on my face but it might be causing some breakouts (even though it's supposedly oil free). Might have to go back to the Neutrogena face sunscreen liquid I used before. Unless I hear recs from some Megheads on something good for face that isn't oily and greasy (even when it says oil free, it doesn't feel like it, y'know?)

Great review, I have just started being really serious about my sunscreen use.  I also love the smell of Coppertone #4, actually it is one of my favorite smells in the world.  I read something the other day that said doctors recommend filling a standard size shot glass with sunscreen to use the appropriate amount for covering the entire body.  So it sounds like the 2 oz bottle would not last long if you were using this amount, but other than that it sounded like a wonderful product.

I am fair, to say the least.  More like translucent, really.  I have burned through 70, what's next a flannel shirt and wide brimmed straw hat?  I live by Coppertone sport, whatever the #, I don't burn.  The only drawback is the smell, it reeks of stink. Is there an unscented version anyone knows of?

I can't belive you got in the bathtub to see if it is waterproof-now that's stellar testing-Genius!.Meg sent me this and I love it-like you said it feels more like a luxury facecream than a sunscreen with no greasy feeling and it sinks straight in,it wont break you out either.M y mom is now using this as well -she loves the way it sinks straight in and you can apply your makeup pretty soon after. Also I love the packaging, its just very luxury and the cute tube is theperfect size for your handbag,oh and it wont leak-thumbs up all round.

Thanks for the great review - this seems like a great sunscreen.  The problem I've had with all the sunscreens I've tried is that they leave a white cast on the face.  This discourages me from applying as much as I should. Does this sunscreen apply sheerly, or is there the telltale white cast? Also, can someone share what ingredients are in this sunscreen?  I didn't see it on the epione website. Thanks in advance :)

I have gotten much better about sunscreen, but I could still use some help.  I am always lathered up at the beach and stay under a tree or an umbrella.  Although my mom and brother have product issues and need to get the expensive sensitive stuff, I can use the cheap drugstore brands.I really should be using it every day, since I wait for the bus in full sun or walk around campus.  I am just in such a rush in the morning I forget to through some on.  Even when I am home for the summer doing my volunteering, I am in and out all day long and don't think to put on sunscreen.I have had very few burns in the last few years, mostly accidents from staying in the ocean too long and not coming out to reapply.  But my skin does get quite dark at times, I think I need to be more conscious in my sun protection efforts!

I have a little follow-up on this fabulous sunscreen!  I used it over the weekend when my Harley Husband and I went for a two hour bike ride in the burning hot sun!  I had slathered this on my arms and face (I had jeans on so I was covered everywhere else) and I did not have one iota of sunburn!  Believe me my skin was wide open to the sun during our ride and my husband who didn't wear any sunscreen was BURNT!!!  This cream really stays on your body and protects!  It's pretty awesome - undoubtedly the best I have ever used and it doesn't come off until you wash it off!

This looks like a great sunblock...you really have to wash it off (awsome). Unlike you, I was not born with a tanning gene...even though my mom was. I have more of an "Irish gene" (i'm not Irish in case your wondering). I have very fair skin and every year I get burned (I always forget sunscrean the first time I go out). I never burn my face because that always has sunscean on it. I do remember one occasion quite well. I went on vaca with my mum and dad on a house boat. I laid out on a floaty on a lake and fell asleap for 1 or 2 hours. I ended up with the worst sunburn of my life...I had blisters all over my sholders and my face and I couldn't bear the touch of even the softest blanket. (sunburns make you cold...who knew). I wish my mom had been a sunscrean user because then I may have learned earlier in life. She still hasn't learned and goes out in the yard to tan every summer. On the other hand, I have learned my lesson well. I now stock up on SPF and make sure to never leave without it.(ok, except for those few times I forget...I know, I'm working on it). I wonder if this sunscrean is too heavy. The last sunscrean I wore sunk into my pores and I had to really scrub to get it out. At $45 this does seem rather expensive, but who knows...

I haven't tried this but I have to see what the ingredients are first. I am currently use a Mario Badescu sunscreen that I really like because I do not break out from this one. There are certain harsh chemicals in sunscreen that I am allergic to.
