COVDR1
Gigi here! Sharon Stone sums up my lip color philosophy with one of her quotes:  “I drive with my knees; otherwise, how can I put on my lipstick?”  Kidding—don’t try this yourself!  Use the rear view mirror when you’re at a stoplight or a stop sign with no traffic in sight.  This is the one product which is ever-present on me.  Gigi sans lip color transforms me into Conan O’Brien’s alter-ego.  With my fair skin, I morph into a pasty Goth and thus always have a slew of colors with me and around my home.

How far will I go to keep tint on my pout?  Years ago I purchased semi-permanent henna for lips.  I used clear henna to strengthen my tresses and impart shine, and I thought the same would happen.  It was a nightmare.  Think prunes.  No, think raisins.  My mouth was so shriveled that all I needed was a broomstick to complete my witch look.  Removal was next to impossible, even with makeup removers, baby oil, and Vaseline.  I couldn’t leave our home for days!

And then came stains.  I did cartwheels.  I did handsprings.  I shouted from the mountaintop.  The benefits are manifold:  Regular lipstick melts in the summer and disappears quickly.  These leave you with color through lengthy days, perspiration, swimming, conditioning, romance, and eating and drinking.  Recently, I was lured by Revlon’s ad for their new stain, “Color Stay Ultimate Lip Color”™, which promises that there is no need for touch-ups.  Users are told they will enjoy a built-in ultra-lasting coat and it will wear for twelve hours.  Revlon, the staple and maverick of makeup, you rarely let me down, but you did with this!  I purchased three, sure that these would work wonders.  As soon as I applied it, my lips developed a strange, tacky feel which kept them sealed together (some people would say this would be is good thing for me).

Enter Cover Girl® with its new “Outlast” stain (about $7.50).  The tube is clear and comes in several hues true to the way they appear on you.  I am able to use both warm and cool tones, and “Cinnamon Smile” was a becoming, slightly copper, tawny tone.  Their web site allows you to virtually try makeup colors to choose those most flattering.  The tapered felt tip is impressive; it permits precise application.  My lips weren’t sealed shut as they had been.  I took a sigh of relief, unfortunately followed by a strong urge to continue with a primal scream.

Cover Girl notes that this remains lightweight (it does), and wears a long time.  I’m not sure how long it lasts.  The reason is because it became so dry and uncomfortable that I removed it.  When I say dry, I am talking parched—as in the Sahara Desert.  Yet some of the benefits touted are that conditioners will soften and smooth.  I tried it repeatedly to reach the guaranteed supple feel, to hold out longer than the stain, but it won every time!

If you do decide to purchase this, make sure you choose a quality, durable gloss to use as a topcoat.  This is a time when some items are worth the price.  My favorite is Lorac’s, now only available on their “Greatest Hits” CD at Sephora ($48).  Lorac's “Lip and Cheek Tint" gets it right.  So does Lauren Hutton’s “First Kiss,” which comes with its own separate moisturizer ($20) and Benefit’s “Benetint,” a cult classic ($28.00).  I’m angry; even though I received a refund, I’ve scheduled detention for Revlon and Cover Girl exes for next fall.  If they balk, they will be suspended.

I like the Revlon "Just Bitten" lip-stains.  I bought it at least two years ago, I think it was a Limited Edition.  It comes in a clear lipstick container & if I didn't know better I would think it was blood.  Eeek!  The sight of blood makes me faint or super dizzy.  I have to lay down when the nurse takes mine and I still start to see black.  I'm a wimp.Anyway, it stays on very well, but be sure to let it dry before applying another coat (if desired) or moisturizer.  If it's not too dry on me, than I doubt it will be too dry on you. My lips are extra dry to begin with from kissing my X-boyfriend who always had a five o'clock shadow.  His whiskers were like pine needles.  My lips have never been the same, so sad.  I'm digressing again, sorry.  Back to my post, after I apply, I put "Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E".  I can't live without this product, well I can live, but I would not be a happy camper.  I buy it in the .5 oz. swivel stick.  It's not a sad chapstick size.  You could have giant lips with this size, really great if you over-plumped your lips.  Just one swipe will do you.  It can be used for the following: marks, blemishes, rough, dry skin and it soothes chapped lips.  I like to use it on the corners of my eyes at night.  I'll be 42 in October & have no crows feet.On Amazon you can still get the Revlon "Just Bitten" & you can get the Palmers at Walgreen's or other drugstores.Gotta go!!!  There's a tornado warning with lightening & I don't feel like getting zapped sitting at this window on my computer.Have a great week!Rachel

i have only tried sephora brand lip markers my favorite is in red currant/cranberry.  it's my personal favorite because it is close to my natural color but giving a nice subtle pizazz that of course can be built on with more layers.  it's pretty drying so with too you have to apply a good gloss though i find doing a chapstick than gloss than chapstick helps infuse moisture especially burt's bees and keep the gloss a bit longer.call me crazy but i have used this on my cheeks with moisturizer under or any mixing medium swept on the cheek lightly can do along with other great moist products.  on the eyes have worked too suprisingly though doesn't blend well obviously but a nice base for a creamy semi sheer shadow on top.oh and one thing that i've noticed is with some of my favorite lipsticks like clinique's raspberry glaze or must have color of theirs in blushing nude if you apply it generously to a exfoliated concealed lip after you put on your foundation through out the day even if i don't apply the lipstick again but just gloss or chapstick i find my lip with sometimes a nice but subtle stain.definitely will be checking out this one from cover girl when i hit pan with my sephora one.

Miss Jess says,

I still have two of the Just Bitten stains from last year (or whenever). I like the long lasting, non-drying effect of them, but I find the roller ball applicator so damn hard to maneuver around my lips! I'd end up with product all over my face, hands, etc. Also, it was hard to get an even coat on so it would wear down splotchy (not a good look!) I don't know what is up with the formulation of those but the accentuated any imperfection on my lips and I bite them a lot. So, yeah, a year or so later, they're still in my gloss drawer, unloved. I do love the Cover Girl ones, however. The felt tipped applicator is like the tip of a sharpie; it makes application easy. The colors mostly go on much darker than the look in the tube. I have 5 (yeah, I went a little BOGO crazy, so what!) My lips tend to be dry anyway so I've never worn these alone, usually with some color of gloss on top, so I'm not a good judge of the drying factor. I also like wearing the Burt's Bees Shimmer chap stick thingy over it (you know the ones I'm talking about? In the skinny tubes? I like the clear, shimmery one) Anyway, yeah i heart these =)Stila also makes a felt tipped stain, called Lip Rouge. It seems about the same as the CG to me and I only have 1. They're like 20 bucks a pop, so yeah, that's why I only have one!Like Gigi, I bought the Revlon long wearing awful sticky disaster of a lip product. I was driving cross country, picked one up thinking it was like a gloss, applied in the car and was stuck with the awful crap on my lips! I HATE that lip gloss/stick/crap. Why can't they make it dry? Really? Modern cosmetic technology is not advanced enough for this? Ugh.Ok, that's all, I need to go to sleep =)

I have a love/hate relationship with stains. I love the way they look. For about an hour. I have relatively full lips. Not Angie lips, but definitely not "thin" lips. It stays on the outer bit of my lips and disappears on the inside. Sort of an odd look. Every single one I have ever tried has dried my lips out terribly and then settled in the crevices of the wrinkles. Balms, glosses, and lipsticks seem to be no help. I've gone high end and low end with no luck. I'll try out the Sephora markers someone mentioned, but I feel me and this particular product will never be friends.

I feel the same way about lip stains as Satil. My lips are full and the color always fades from the center of my mouth after an hour or so. I do like mark's Kissink Lip Tintmarker. I can make it last longer when I use a line filler and lip primer before I use the stain.

I was so excited about these Covergirl stains--and so disappointed when I tried them out. I also experienced the dryness. Vincent Longo stains are really good but Sephora dropped the line and I think you can only find him on his website now. The color "My Sunshine" is a perfect natural red/brown.

Hi GigiGreat review (as always!!!). I must say I was very taken with the the idea of these stains. I have a face that eats make up. No matter what goes on, it disappears in like 2 hours - blush, foundation, concealer, eye colour -you name it - but MOST especially anything I put on my lips. The Revlon colorstay did stay, but it felt so disgusting that I scraped it off with washcloth (I do mean scrape - that stuff hangs on like a tick on a dog's ear). Doesn't anyone make a stain that comes like a lip balm? Now that would be fabulous....Much Love

Another great review from the queen of the drug store Gigi!!I often take another look at lip stains in the summer time. This is usually the time when I want to reapply my lip product less. Plus, if I am outside for an extended length of time lipstick will melt on my face and even in my bag. So every year in vein I continue my search for  yet another summer lip stain. I have tried many. In the last few years I gave Bentetint and Revlon's Just Bitten a whirl. They absolutely did not work for me. One reason was because of the drying effect. But I have yet to find a stain that doesn't dry me out. So my dissapointment centered on the application process and how it sat on my lips. I felt like both products were messily applied. But hey, I admit that maybe that should be blamed on the "applier". But even more disturbing was how it looked on my lips. I do not have extremely smooth lips. I have lots of bumps, lines, and crevicies. If you have lips that are not as smooth as a baby's bottom than these products will slip into said crevices and look horrible! It makes it darker in certain places than in others. So my recommendation is to avoid them! I would love to try the Lorac tint. I read somewhere that Evangeline Lily ie. Kate from Lost wears it on the show. I would love to have her naturally sultry, "lost" look. But alas the Lorac is rather difficult to get ahold of these days!I also don't tend to enjoy putting something on my cheeks that I apply directly to my mouth. So I don't often mix my body parts and tint. As much as I love the idea of having a multi-tasker, I avoid it. I think that it stems fom my fear of polluting my oily and acne prone skin with lip crap! For this summer I have attempted to use the CG OUtlast lipstain in Sassy Mauve. I have tried it numerous times but not yet on my July vacation. This is the ultimnate test! So far so good though. Gigi is right that it lies about its conditioning benefits. But I knew that it would be dishonest from the get-go. I am the "great beauty product skeptic" after all. But the color is pretty nice on me. The application is not messy at all. I am curious to see when the marker dries out. When I tried a similar version from the Mark line years ago it dried out quickly. On lesson I did learn about this product is to not apply an balm prior to application. Your lips must be bone dry or it doesn't work very well. Maybe I was the only one who didn't know this? HHMMM...I have found one item that seems to pair with this stain and make it pretty nice. After application I have been applying the Korres Plum Lip Butter. Wow! It really adds something lovely to the color. And of course it takes care of the hydration problem pretty much completely. And it seems to make the staining effect last even longer. After my July vacation I will try to provide an update and let you all know if I really have found a semi-acceptable summer stain or if it's back to searching for the "one". Gigi-don't forget to send those execs to detention! Maybe even give them an extra one from me. They have been bad!

I love Gigi and I love her reviews, but I do not love Outlast.  It goes on incredibly wet.  I haven't found a color that I like (so my girls have been the benefactors of my mistakes and there is one color neither of them wanted).  I agree that it won't melt, that it didn't feel bad on the lips (neither does a good glass of chardonnay, but that is very hard to carry in your purse) and that it did last.  Which was a total bummer because I hated the colors.  Agree the lips need to be bone dry.  I did try a gloss on top and that was a total mess, but it could have been the gloss.  And on a totally unrelated topic, Kiss My Face has a new face cleanser KMF Clean.  Would love to see a review.  However, at the very affordable price point I would give it a try and if I don't like it, you got it, GIFT it to a teenager!

like satil & yourbeautymark... i have full lips and the stains do leave that ring around the lip thing on me as well. i also have a problem w/some lipsticks collecting in the lil lip creases i have, not so much AROUND my lips (thankfully i dont have that yet) but IN my lips.  so basically i'm alllll about the glosses AND (here comes the crazy) tiger balm or badger balm muscle rub.... YUP... you read that right.  seriously it's like lip plumper and stain all in one... the pepper/clove ingredients cause my lips to redden, naturally... and they tingle (ok sting if they're chapped).  i liked benetint on my cheeks tho... but it looked better on my sister so she's got that flushed look now.. great review as usual!

jeanasina says,

I received the new OUTLAST lipstain from Meg in ‘Flirty Nude’.   At first I was excited – the one feature I usually like in lipstain is that the color stays on longer than most of my lipsticks.  So I whipped off the top of the tube and was ready to be wowed with this new product!  I loved the fact that the tube was good sized and easy to get a grip on!  When you pull off the cap the first thoughts you have are…”Felt Tip Pen”, “White Board Marker” or “Highlighter Pen” – whichever term you know best for highlighting pages in homework or writing on the large whiteboards at your office – this is definitely a takeoff on those!  You look at that little ‘felt tip’ and your mind instantly processes the fact that the tip is looking positively bone dry (except that it’s colorful of course).  But you are hopeful.  So I got in front of a good mirror where I could see what I was doing and I began to apply the new lip stain to my skinny ass lips.  The one thing I did like about it, was that it really traced my lips perfectly, there was no feathering, bleeding or spillover!!!  That color I got, “Flirty Nude”, really wasn’t nude at all on my lips but gave them a great shade of innocent/natural looking strong/burgundy type color!  So…to continue…even though the color looked good on me and didn’t turn my lips ‘hot pink’ like just about every color I try for some reason, I was still thinking this felt tip feels excessively dry and the stuff coming out, also feeling SO DRY!  After I attempted to put several layers of it on my lips, at this point they were now reaching desert dry texture, so I immediately went to get some gloss to moisturize and perk this stuff up!  I spent the entire day applying it and then applying gloss, then I resorted to applying a layer of chapped lip product, then the OUTLAST, and then more gloss.  By the end of the first day, my lips felt as dry as cardboard.  Another thing…I don’t think it lasts very long if you DO get enough product from out of the moisture-lacking tip!  Eat something - OUTLAST lipstain GONE COMPLETELY!!!!!!...and that dang tip is never full of new product waiting to ooooze out!  I shook the thing violently trying to see if maybe some nice, moist, jammed up product was stuck inside the tube.  Then I thought about going to Home Depot and having them clamp it tight into their ‘paint shaker’ to see if I could get some more color or moisture to come up into the tip by violently having it shook up!!!…I’m telling you – this product is a dud.  If there even IS some type of liquid inside the tube..it must be stuck in there or maybe it’s all a deception and there is only a millidrop of color in the felt tip to begin with and when your tip dries up…it’s over baby!!!  It’s SO OVER!  This product doesn’t OUTLAST a damn thing!

Jeanasina!

I have tried several lipstains, but I still haven't found the "perfect one" yet. I have tried Benefit tint, The Body Shop, Stila Cherry Stain, Bloom red currant, Relvon cherry tart, etc..and more recently cover girl's new lip stain. So far I am still looking. While Cover Girl doesn't do too badly, I think I prefer Bloom lipstain. Benefit doesn't travel too well. Revlon, is okay but I don't like the roller ball application, too messy. Stila is good but more high end than cover girl or Bloom. Both Bloom and Covergirl are pretty good and I would buy more of the red than the pinks as the red show up better.

The Revlon stuff was just shiterriffc.  I completely agree, I was left with the tacky-what-the-hell-do-I-do-now feeling as well. I covered it up with some Burt's bees that's what.  The Covergirl stuff did not overly excite me either, I bought the nudish one.  Does that mean invisible? Yeah, one coat of lip gloss (Burt's again) and it completely disappears! No matter how many coats or drying time. The only thing I have found that works is the Covergirl Outlast in the 2 tubes.  One is clear and the other is lip color.  The clear always runs out before the colored but Burt's doesn't degrade the staying power too much.  I haven't found where to get the clear by it's self.

Like a_banger, I've avoided lipstains because of the drying power of them. My lips are already too dry 70% of the time. I don't want to have to do extra steps to get a nice color and some moisture. I just keep it simple in the summer. It's too hot and humid to worry about looking perfect. My best seasons for looking great are Fall through Spring. LOL.

My lips are always really dry - and I bite them. All the time. Yuck! I shall say 'used to be' - that is until I discovered ColoreScience.I could never EVER find a product that would moisturize. Every time I tried a long lasting lipstick or lipstain, I ate it off because my lips would start lo literally peel. But now I'm on it - ColoreScience lip polishes are my total saviour! They are like a nail polish - put them on, mix different colours if you wish and then let set and dry for a minute. They last and last! Can be taken off with any oil based make-up remover (which also means that they will not last completely through a greasy meal, so keep the lip polish in your purse). Another great trick is to leave the lip polish overnight (plus: you will look juicy for your hubby/ partner) and when you wake up, your lips will be super smooth! If all this isn't enough for you, the polishes have SPF 20! Did you know that melanoma on lips is very difficult to remove and usually ends up disfiguring your lips permanently, because lips are such a small area? Now that is a hardworking product!!! The polish come in a limited number of shades, but all are very flattering and wearable, and can be mixed for new shades. This product is recommended to be used on clean exfoliated lips to last longer; ColoreScience has also a lip exfoliator. A great product for gals with chappy lips like me. Just put on in the morning, leave for 5 minutes and wipe off with a tissue paper. Your lips will be able to take even on a winter like we have in Wyoming! (I ski with lip polish on and it protects me from the harsh sunshine and windburn. And my lips don't turn a shade of blue...) And if you want to take it a step further, get their lip serum too. It has minerals, peppermint essential oil and comes in four shades that complement the lip polishes... so you can choose if you want to go matte (matte lip polish) or shiny (choose polish with sparkle/ add the serum).Anybody tried these lip polishes yet???

Hello Beautiful Ladies, I love everyones advice, make up tricks and good choices. I have a little trick of my own. I haven't had much luck with the stains or color stay gloss. I tried the Revlon one with the color stay gloss and the clear coat (glitter in the clear coat for some reason) dry dry dry, did I mention it felt really DRY? Even w/ the clear coat over it, it felt dry. Set the scene, 3 a.m. dark, my husband hears a noise in the garage, who is in the garage? Its me, husband: what are you doing? me: Don't you have some paint stripper or a putty knife or something? Husband: why? u do know it's 3 a.m.? me: Yeah, I tried this Revlon color stay and I keep dreaming I'm in the desert, sucking on a tortoise or something, I'm not sure, husband with a smile, that wasn't a tortoise!! ha Any-who, I have tried many color stay products, for multi tasking Chanel has a 3 in 1 pencil that is gorgeous but expensive, I got it from my sister in law, however, other companies, like Almay, make the 3 in 1 pencil for eyes, cheeks, and lips. Use your 3 in one pencil w/ a good color stay lip stick. I like Estee Lauder's pure color long lasting lipstick, my wonderful friend got it for me (and had the gold tube engraved w/ Vickie's Lips, cute idea). The color is Bois De Rose.  make up trick: thin lips? try this for fuller lipsstart w/ the outside corner of your mouth, draw the line inwards to the center, start w/ the outside top, draw in to the heart or arch, do that on both sides then do the bottom, start w/ the outside and draw line inwards. It is the same concept of putting a line 1/4 in from outer eye to center eye, draw the line from your outside corner and stop where the color part of your eyeball starts, that also enlarges the eye.Well, thats it from vicci13. Thank You all for your wonderful feed back and sharing. Gigi is the BEST!!

my lips tend to get dry so i never wanted to try lip stains- i heard they are the most drying. i have no problem going bare- lipped because my lips have naturally dark pink color so all i need most of the time is a gloss or chapstick.

Gigi, you had me at primal scream!  Thanks for another wonderful review.  I had the same response to the Revlon and CG stains.  In fact, I just threw out my CG one this week when I was re-organizing my supplies.  But here's what I really do like... in there with my UD, Chanel, Tarte lipstuff, it's Mabelline ColorStay lip gloss.  I can no longer read whatever color it is, but it's a pretty pink.  It stays on throughout the day and the clear gloss that goes over it, makes it shiny and NOT DRY!

Gigi-girl....right there with ya' on the "Pasty Goth" look and if I went a bunch o' years younger,I'd embrace that "Princess of Darkness" look with pride! I am poised at my keyboard ready to duck the barrage of footware that will no doubt,be hurled in my direction.I loved this product. :)I've often relied on Vincent Longo's stains to insure that I had a bit of color while taking fitness classes and/or while suffering long hours in airports. Nothing is less sexy in a "poledance class" than when you flip your hair and 1/2 of your hair sticks to your lipgloss/ is subsequently dragged over your face,LOL! I received the CG version in #430 (who can READ the names???) and had just gotten "plumped up" aka had a dose of Juvaderm and there are still a few lil' burises here and there...didn't honestly expect too much but LOVED the way the color went on around the edges as Jeana noted and after it was applied,my lips looks ridiculously lush, beautifully even, and like plump-lil' pillows of love!A quick coat of my beloved Cherry Chapstick and I literally was Angelina'd for hours!Several people asked me what color had on.Bought 3 other colors today...like I need ANYTHING else in a plastic tube, right???It really works for me and I honestly didn't get too dry from it...wish more of you loved it too but hey, that's why we are Megette's,right?Another trick you learn when you take fitness classes that don't involve weights with girls whose bodies ARE their living is to try those "less than" colors to shade in your nipples when you really want to wow someone who might be looking! Really makes em' stand out all purty...do not ASK me about the taste you lil freakettes,LOL! See....gotcha' yet again....kicks her broom into high gear and flies off to have tea and crumpets with her beloved Gigi. :)

I have to say that I do not really like lip stains. They usually just feel dry and not pleasant to wear. I just stick with constantly applying chapsick or a lip gloss all day but that can be quite tedious. I have some old Victoria's Secret ones that I just love.

I wanted to love this lip stain, I really did.  To me, big thumb down.  My other lipsticks and glosses last longer than this did.  I noticed someone commented that the color stopped coming out.  I am having that problem also.  I just assume the product was dry and old.  I am going back to coloring my lips in with lip liner and topping with either lipstick or gloss.Anyone know a great lip stain?

This was not for me.  Too dry and not a flattering color.  I got it in color #430. I would describe it as a basic coral.  I couldn't find a name to go with the number.  However, I allowed my nine year old to try it and she loved the look and the feel of it.  It did look fantastic on her.  What can I say?  She loves playing makeup just as much as the rest of us.  My one rule: she can only apply it when we are not leaving the house or expecting company.   Works for me!

I went onto consumer reports.org, 1 of my advice sources, this is what they have to say about color stay lip color, they said nothing about lip stains exactly, but. they did have this to say re: color stay lip color.

Women needn't pay a lot for long-lasting lip color. We tried four products that are applied in two steps—color, then gloss—and claim to last 8 hours (Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in Place Lip Duo, $24) or up to 16 hours (Cover Girl Outlast All-day Lipcolor, L'Oreal Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour, and Maybelline Superstay Lipcolor, all about $9). Our 14 panelists wore each product on two different days, eating and drinking as usual. Although none of the lipsticks stuck around for 16 hours, all had great color for at least 4 hours and respectable color for 8 hours. One drawback: They left lips somewhat dry, which could usually be remedied by repeated swipes of gloss.

Lip stain never worked for me. It just never comes out right and I don't like the feel of them on my lips either althought I have not try many of them because of these reasons. In my teenage years I remember buying the green lip stain that is suppose to turn in to your perfect color. That was a big mistake and would not come off and it was bright red. A few years ago my Makeup artist sold me this dual lip and cheek stain (not sure the brand) and it's just to red on me. Not my cup of tea. Thanks Gigi for another great review!

I really like the Outlast lip color, my shade is Naturalast. I have used this for years now as a lipstick base coat. Although I am fiend about reapplying lip color, either gloss or stick, I like the idea that I have a long lasting base coat.  Now, having said that, I do like stains. Actually one stain. Urban Decay's.  In Jealous. This is the perfect color for me. Without any lipcolor, like Gigi, I am very pale and washed out.   I really like this stain. It isn't drying, two coats for me, letting  the first coat dry before adding the second.  It holds up to gloss. My daily go to gloss is Kiss Me by Philosophy in Red, however, I used other glosses, currently in my rotation is Bare Minerals in Brandi, which I love more than one should for a cosmetic, LOL, and California Kissin' by Benefit.  (I should mention, that the only Benefit item I do not like is the stain, LOL).  I alternate the UD lipstain and the Outlast Lip Color as my base.  I go toward the Outlast when I am more made up, and the UD stain when I am going lighter. I also have some of The Balm's stain. It is okay. I have no problem with it at all, although I guess I like the color Jealous in the UD better than the colors in The Balm line.I will have to try the Outlast Stain in the near future though.

As usual, you've reviewed another product that I've seriously been thinking about buying! You must have put some sort of virus on my computer :-P But seriously, I'm glad you talked me out of Covergirl's Outlast version. In the past I've tried Urban Decay's version (way too bright, didn't last long, weird "vanilla" scent, cute but bulky packaging), Benefit Posietint (a little spendy but I LOVE this! and that it can double as blush), and mark KissInk (an okay product, so so lasting power, not drying but not moisturizing).Lastly, I also love Alba TerraTints in Garnet. It's technically a tinted lip balm, but I find that it stains my lips nicely, isn't overly drying, and lasts well. It has SPF 8!

I tried out these as well. I was super, super excited at first. They went on so easy and the color, I think it was called Blush, looked extremely pretty on me. Within probably an hour though, my lips were so dried out. I ended up putting lip balm on over the stain. It made it a little better, but that pretty much made the color disappear.I like the idea of stains - long wear is a wonderful thing, but the only other stain I've tried was Stila's which has a similar felt tip marker thing going. That packaging was awful (it never stayed shut) and it also made my lips REALLY dry.

This WILL work if your lips are properly hydrated and exfoliated beforehand - I simply use a BufPuf in the shower with my bodywash, lips hydrated from drinking plenty of water, and follow the freshly-showered lips with a tiny bit of pure organic jojoba oil (can be found at Trader Joe's for less than $10.)  It sinks in while styling the hair, and then the fun begins- Apply just one coat of CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain (I like 425 for that Audrey Hepburn with-a-little-black dress effect,)  and then let it set for a minute or two without talking or licking your lips.  Once it's set, you're looking at all-day (and sometimes good-morning) color. Lips that feel kissably soft. Of course, olive oil on a salad will require re-application. Just remember to let it set, first.  Sort of like letting your artwork dry before smearing it.  I've been using it for a month, and it works - lots of compliments.  And keep the cap on tight - just like we do with our favorite art markers.  Enjoy the product and the price!

I was really hoping this would work (read add color) under my clear gloss that I faithfully wear every waking hour. Not to brag but I have the softest lips this side of Lake Okeechobee due to my gloss habit. Unfortunately, after one use and feeling like someone had left my lips out to dry like play-doh,  I threw it in my 19 year old daughter's room. She loves when I give her make-up... well usually, but not this time, I later found it in her trash. Thumbs down!
