SHARON LEARNED A FEW THINGS

Sharond here! Sharond learned a few a new things . . . . .
Recently I had the unfortunate chance to sit in a waiting room for several hours. Thankfully there were several magazines to look through. Trying to use Meg’s positive attitude and make lemonade out of lemons, I thought perhaps these magazines might have some useful information that could help all of us. The following snippets of hints and quotes come from Cosmo, Elle, Town and Country, Allure, People and several other women’s magazines.
Make your eye shadow last by dipping your makeup brush into a drop of saline contact solution before applying eye shadow. The salt in the solution will make the shadow extra moist since salt retains water, giving the pigment staying power.
Clean your curling iron or flatiron. Dunk a towel in water mixed with ¼ cup baking soda, then wipe down the plates of your tools to keep them clean.
Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with a cup of water and pour over dry hair. Follow with a cool shower. The acidity in vinegar breaks down residue like dirt, pollution and smoke to make hair look glossy again.
Wash your hair without water. Excess product is the number one culprit for dull locks. Apply shampoo to dry strands since water forms a barrier between hair and the cleansing agents, then rinse. Doing so helps remover any leftover styling products.
If your scalp gets oily, do a weekly remedy. Dip your brush into a cup of cornstarch as it aids oil absorption and run it through strands. Wait 10 minutes. Your hair will soak up most of the cornstarch, but run a comb through afterward to remove any leftover particles.
If you don’t prep your skin right, faux tans, even the expensive treatments you get at the spa, last just three to five days. Engage in a little SL&M which stands for scrub, lighten up and moisturize and your tan will last much longer. Scrub your body with an exfoliatior, next Lighten up on the amount of self tanner you use by applying only one layer and finally Moisturize with body oil in addition to a thick lotion.
Be a bit mysterious when trying to attract new people. They will be more intrigued if they don’t know everything about your life.
People are happier when they spend money on experiences rather than on possessions.
Three things every “chick” should know. 1) Pass off takeout as a home cooked meal by putting the food in a pan. 2) Uncork a bottle of wine. 3) Make quick hor d’oeuvres.
If you get tired in the afternoon, eat a lighter lunch.
Less is more.
What are your most fabulous Tips!

Two parts shampoo one part baking soda - amazingly effective color-safe clarifying treatment for your gunky product ridden hair.

The saline solution is a good one,Ive never heard that before.

Someone (DuWop maybe) came out with a product to do just this. I read somewhere about the saline solution right about the time a new Target opened and I got a goody bag from the pharmacy which included a small (4 ounce ) bottle of saline solution. I tried it. It works. It not only makes it last longer, it makes the color a little deeper. I love this trick.
Obvious really, smile more and frown less. Use sunscreen everyday, especially on your children. They will thank you one day, even if they hate it you for it now. ♥Great information Sharond!
I love ALL your tips. Keep them coming!
Sharond, Totally enjoyed your eeked from magazine tips! Wonderful sharing topic! I gotta tell ya - that librarian image is fab-u-lous! Wow! I wish I had that look as my personal image at the office! The men would all pause and the women would wish they were me! Also the magazines in your waiting room experience must have at least been somewhat current! Most places where I go for appointments are still living in the past or have 87 issues of Popular Mechanic with the covers ripped off lying around! I racked my brain trying to come up with a tip that would be of value to anyone reading this, it's not like people are coming out of the woodwork to ask me how I achieve stuff...so my one tip is this...If someone who is from the 'elite' world happens to compliment you on your outfit, I find that they will be less appalled and respond with less of a disdainful face if you tell them you found it at a consignment shop rather than the truth, that you picked it up at a thrift store! True Story! I worked with a wealthy person who on occasion would compliment me on my clothing and once I mentioned the words 'thrift store find' and she all but gagged and I could tell she was wondering if she should step back in case I hadn't washed it! So next time she admired something I was wearing, I just said "I picked it up at a consignment store because we both knew the consignment stores are very particular about taking name brands only so I was gold in her eyes and she wanted to know which one I shopped at! I wasn't lying because in a way, people ARE consigning their clothes to the thrift store only instead of getting money eventually, they receive a tax receipt on the spot!

All great information from everyone! I will need to try some of these great tips. :)
I do have another tip! For those of you with a regular iron (not a non-stick), sometimes it gets gunked up with stuff. I'm talking iron as in ironing clothes (not hair iron). I went all over the internet trying to find a way to get the accumulated gunk off of my iron faceplate and came across this great hint! Heat the iron to a nonsteam, medium heat before cleaning. Sprinkle a generous layer of table salt over a brown grocery bag (use one that has no writing on the top surface). The salt is abrasive and will remove residue. Iron over the salt to remove starch and debris from the surface of the iron. Let me tell you, this works SO well! My iron faceplate was like brand new again - shiny and smooth and clean as a whistle!

Ok, so it's a brand new day and I'm wide awake and just remembered another tip I got from a jeweler! You don't need to buy jewelry cleaner for your diamonds ladies! Just pick up some Polident denture tablets and put your diamonds in the bottom of a glass container, drop in one or two Polident denture tablets and walk away! By the time the Polident is done fizzing, your diamonds will be sparkling like new! This really WORKS! My jeweler at the time told me he once went to a garage sale and picked up a crystal vase that was so filthy he got it for cheap. He went home and submerged it in a dishpan with lots of Polident and later when he came to check it out, all the crud was gone and he had an absolutely stunning new crystal vase! Just be sure to rinse it off before you dry it! We have a chandelier that came with our house and I painted it white so it would look shabby chic. I took off all the zillion glass crystals on it and submerged them in water with the Polident tablets and we are talking amazing sparkle!!!!

Ok, so you know shoes eventually get stinky right? We store them in our closet or specially made shoe holders, under the bed, etc., well I either take bars of soap that people give me as presents that I'll never use or I go to the store and pick up a 12 pack of my favorite fresh smelling soap like "Zest" or "Irish Spring" etc. and I put a bar of soap inside each shoe! The soap somehow helps absorb the stink of your shoes and also, when you pull out your shoe box and open it, you are hit with a fresh smell instead of old shoe putrification aromas! This seems to work for me and soap is pretty cheap especially if you buy a 12 pack! I also dated a guy who hung bars of manly smelling soap by a string in his closet to keep his closet smelling fresh along with his clothing!

When your elbows start getting a little "dark" make sure you exfoliate them well. Then cut a lemon in half and rub it on your elbows for about 10 minutes. Rinse well and follow up with an intense moisturizer like a body butter. The exfoliation gets rid of the rough, the lemon bleaches the dark patch and the lotion rehydrates for healthier skin. Have fun!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I remove nail polish with a used dryer sheets. It is cheap and works very well. The polish comes off much cleaner then with tissue.
Since I am a seamstress, I can relate to Jeanasina's iron tip. However I clean my iron by turning in on cotton, not steam and just iron over a dryer sheet.Speaking of dryer sheet, if you them regularly in the dryer, check to see how fast water drains through your lint scream. Dryer sheets clog the screen and can cause fires. I was shocked the first time I tried this, my screen actually held water.Love all the hints....keep them coming

Another diamond cleaning tip: cheap vodka. Diamond traders have been using it for years. It will absolutely make your diamonds SHINE (good for us with CZs too) and all you need is that icky bit nobody likes to drink at the bottom of the bottle. Best non-harsh waterproof-mascara remover in the world? Baby oil. So you just chopped garlic or onions and your hands stink to high heaven? Olive oil and sugar! Makes your hands so soft and takes away the majority of that stink (it still sticks around in your cuticles and under the nail- can't get that out sadly). One of my patients helped me with with- how to de-wrinkle a dry clean only dress- Get it damp (not soaking) lie it on a towel and smooth it out completely. Roll up the towel like sushi. Leave it until it's dry. Instant- de-wrinkle.
Make any facewash into a scrub by adding some table salt or sugar or baking powder. Just make sure to cleanse well :) Or, use a facebrush. It's great if you have a facewash you already like and don't want to spend money finding a good scrub too! (I was tired of scrubs that were too gritty, not gritty enough, not moisturizing enough, too moisturizing, etc.) For a lip scrub, add some salt or sugar to vaseline and rub it on your lips, or use an extra toothbrush w/Vaseline to gently exfoliate your lips.Following along sweetassgal's tip: I read in a magazine that if you overdo self tanner on your elbows, heels, etc. use half a lemon to scrub/lighten.
♥ Lipgloss and Spandex: a blog for gals who look good and run fast
When my hair is really parched I like to put in a really thick and moisturizing conditioning treatment, put my hair into a braid, and then do chores or errands around the house for a while. Leaving these treatments in my hair that little extra time, really makes all the difference, and gets my hair silky soft.
Oh I forgot.....Self exfoliators are super easy to make. Salt, Sugar, and Sand are all great exfoliators. My favorite is sugar. Both granulated sugar and brown sugar work great. You can put some in a bowl and then mix with a face mask, face wash, water, moisturizer, glycerin, etc and then take it and put it on my face and other areas and then scrub away. It leaves your skin so exfoliated and so smooth. Most exfoliating products you buy will have either sugar, sand, or salt, in them.
I am absolutely loving all these tips!! I've heard that plain green tea makes a great facial toner as it's full of antioxidants and vitamins..Also, using a tiny bit of orange shimmer free lipstick on undereye circles before applying concealer acts as a neutralizer, making undereye circles disappear! It really works!
Great tips!
Get rid of onion or garlic smell on hands by running your hands over a spoon or fork under running water.Bath salt scrub is easy to make using 2 cups epsom salt, aprox 1 tbsp sweet almond oil, aprox 1 tbsp glycerin mix until it becomes geletenous. Put a few drops of your favorite essential oils or spritz with cologne if you want it scented. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want and mix, put in a nice container, top with a bow and keep for yourself!

olive oil as a moisturizer and make-up remover, and aspirin mask to avoid acne :)
I love the saline solution tip. I will have to definitely try this one. I love wearing eyeshadows and this sounds like an excellent tip. I rinse my hair in cold water to keep it glossy. Anyone have tips for frizzy hair???-Allya (http://paintedtips.blogspot.com/)
I love mixing saline and my eyeshadow that trick works wonders. It also works well as a solution to covert shadow into a liquid-y eyeliner. It stays in place all day!i'm most interested in the corn starch tip. I have really greasy roots and I wonder if that would help me out. It's worth a shot right?
i love all of these tricks! this is such a good compilation and a great use of time while waiting!i do something similar at my blog every weekend - check it out!

I thought of a couple of tips, one, lower the wattage of the bulbs in lamps. It makes you look better, you save energy, and people might not notice if you forgot to dust.Spray a little cleaner with a lovely fresh scent and DH might just think you've been hard at the cleaning. Febreeze is great. 1/2 teaspoon of epsom salts, a few drops of your favorite essential oils (I like rosemary and mint for this) to one cup sterile water (bottled or boil some and let it cool) placed in a mister bottle will revitalize curly hair and renew your curl on days your don't want to shampoo. Spritz well and scrunch. Putting toner in a spray bottle, if it doesn't come in one, makes it go further and it feels grand. Keep a cotton pad in hand to wipe eye area and then rest of face.
those are nifty tips!
You can never have too many tips.I do wonder how the guy who jeanasina used to date "hung soap". It made his closet smell good.
Such great tips, I'm going to try the saline solution trick tomorrow!! I'm going to the Hamptons for my friends last night out as a single lady!
Wow, great tips! To get right of stains on your teeth, brush your teeth with baking soda. Won't hurt your teeth, works for light stains. Tastes gross though beware!
These are amazing tips! Why didn't I find this post before?

These are some great ideas!! I think I'm gonna try the dry shampooing my hair right now....
*~*AMY RENEE*~*When life hands me lemons, I'm opting for lemon pound cake!
I am def going to try at least 2 things on your list. 1. water & vinager for shiny hair...boy does my hair need this!2. dry shampoo...I will be tring this tonight!I have been using the eye shadow tip and I love it. For one thing, most of the colors become more vibrant than dry application...and they last longer. Who wouldn't want that? Thanks for the tips.

These are all great tips! Thank you all for sharing. :)
These are so great, thanks! Here are two good ones I can share (although with some home remedies I think I would have to be pretty darn desperate). But hey, desperate times do show up every once and a while. Be prepared! ...... *Rubbing Pepto-Bismal on your skin is a better facial than peel off masks. and *Need an emery board and can't find one? You can use the strike plate on a book of matches. So when things look grim, get yourself some pepto and matches and your are good to go! :-) Thanks for the great tips ladies. I am going to try some of your hair suggestions.
Great tips!
Cute tips. I actually like getting a chance to Wait in a waiting room, because it is about the only chance I get to sit down and read magazines!

Ooooh I love that cornstarch tip - I saw them using cornstarch on Groomer Has It to help get knots of the dogs' fur, it's funny to see that it has uses for human hair too :)
