HOLY GUACAMOLE! HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!

Happy Cinco de Mayo Megettes! In honor of the land that brought us that ingenious concoction known as the margarita (on the rocks, no salt with an extra shot on the side please!) sweetassgal is here to bring you a new DIY treat that is worthy of the beauties south of the border. Bust out the avocado mamacita because our vitamin packed green friend isn't just for dipping anymore. HOLY GUACAMOLE Batman!
Summer months and sweltering heat are looming before us here in the Northern California Valley and this means ONE thing for my super dry curly hair...say it with me...FRIZZ! My hair soaks up conditioner and heavy oils like a Denny's pancake soaks up syrup...and it just keeps asking for more. My hair just doesn't look good at all unless its super, ultra, mega hydrated. And nothing can pack a better moisturizing punch than natures most versatile fruit, or vegetable, or fruit (I can never remember which)...the avocado! And thankfully if there is one thing we've got plenty of in Cali its the cado. It's practically our state vegetable, or fruit, or vegetable...oh forget it and just hit the farmers market for an organic avocado, some olive oil and an egg.
I stumbled across this recipe for an organic avocado hair mask that is used by a well sought after stylist in Florida name Leonardo Rocco. Doesn't that name conjure up all sorts of lusty thoughts...sounds as edible as the avocado does. ggggrrr. Anyway...the recipe is simple. One ripe avocado, one egg yolk and one teaspoon of olive oil (all organic) blended together to form a creamy paste. If your hair is dry start at the scalp working into your skin and sectioning off the hair. Run the mixture down the length of your hair saturating it completely. If your hair is oily start halfway down skipping the scalp and just coat your hair. Wrap your hair up into a plastic cap (or a Target bag if that's all you've got...wink wink Jeanasina) and secure with one of those FAB FHI T-Rex clips Meg reviewed in April. Sit under a heat cap if you have one or heat with your blow dryer but keep it on for at least 20 minutes to let it really soak in. Then of course rinse with warm water completely and follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner. I for one will be sporting my avocado hair mask while sipping a Cadillac margarita and enjoying the dual benefits of two of the best things Mexico has to offer us gringos. Shiny, hydrated hair and a buzz...viva la Mexico!
One post thought...take stylemama's advice and add a few drops of tea tree oil if you are making a mask that will be used on your scalp. TTO is heaven for your scalp and will add a scent that can become addictive. Want to take it a step further? Use the leftover egg white as a natural line and wrinkle firmer on your face. Apply with a cosmetic brush to spread the egg white on your face where ever you may need it. Let dry for 5 minutes and rinse off with warm water. I haven't tested this yet but its a pretty well known DIY treatment and that way you aren't wasting ANY part of your organic egg. It's all about natural AND cost effective here at Green Chi Tuesdays. Feliz Cinco de Mayo....GLAM ON!!!!!

Ahhhh, the margarita. On the rocks, extra salt and keep 'em coming! Oh, Sweetass, if only we could all meet on this 5th of May for cocktails and hair masks....... One day right? The avocado is a fabulous fruit isn't it? (Having a pit qualifies this little lovely as a fruit, if I am not mistaken.) I am loving your Green Chi Tuesdays; these homemade concoctions are so fabulous and so smart! My mother has super dry hair (partially gray with blond-ish highlights) and nothing penetrates her do. She is going to love this recipe. Thank You!Now, as long as I can keep myself from sucking the avocado from her hair she just might have a chance.
Almost forgot, thank you for the shout out to my beloved... Tea Tree Oil. You know, my children rue the day I discovered it. One day they will come running, begging for my pungent little concoctions, won't they?
I adore the green goo of love aka an avocado or 5...just had one for lunch! Everything about them is delicious and I frequently list them as my "fav food!" I've smeared on my skin and on my hair and trust me,if I could get say 50 of them a week, they'd all be gone in one way or another,LOL!Great recipe and review and I hope many others soak in the goodness of green!I put mine on,add shower cap aka Target bag and sit in the tub...:)
Can't wait to try this. Coincidentally, I just bought an organic avocado yesterday. I bought it for this luscious chop salad I make-it's a recipe I stole from a great restaurant in Hartford CT (ladies if you are ever in Hartford stop in to Hot Tomatoes, a chic and modern Italian eatery downtown). Romaine lettuce topped with diced tomatoes, onion, avocado, hard boiled egg and a homemade balsamic vinaigrette (add grilled, marinated flank steak to make a meal). Since I was a child we have had a salad with every dinner, and this recipe is a nice change from the simple garden salad. One question, does anyone know: is the egg white mask said to improve wrinkles over time, or instantly tighten skin only in the short term?Oooo..The UPS man just dropped off my new Vincent Longo Dew Finish foundation and lip stain. A double treat because he is a dead ringer for Tom Selleck. I have never fully recovered from my infatuation with Magnum PI.

Wow! This was a great informative review and an idea I would have NEVER thought of! I can totally imagine submerging my entire head of hair in avocado and then singing “It’s not easy being green.” to anybody who happens to encounter me! I love avocados and don’t purchase them nearly enough! Having an avocado tree nearby would be heaven! Never would have thought about ‘outside the body’ uses! While reading this review it occurred to me that if it’s great for hair I’m guessing it would be good for your skin too and my research tells me I’m right! Look at what I found out (read below)! I’m totally thinking about getting an antique diving helmet and putting it on my head on a daily basis and then latching that sucker on tight and then opening one of the chambers within the helmet and oozing the contents of about 30 avocados into the helmet so that it covers my hair and face and neck! Total submergence! If I do this every day, I think I’m going to have fabulous clear soft skin as well as ‘Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful’ hair! Wow…who knew! Check it out! Too bad I can’t wear a glaze of it while I’m at work! I’d love to have some sun damage and age spot healing!
Benefits of avocado oil to the skin
Jeanasina!
Wow that is great information.
A girlfriend of mine has suffered from eczema for years now, I can't wait to tell her about this-thanks!
I have nasty dry hair spells and this looks like the perfect remedy! I am making my grocery list as I type and that wonderful avacado is on the top! I saw some tea tree oil in CVS the other day, I'll make an extra stop and get some...the promise of an addictive scent is so.....exciting!! happy cinco de mayo everyone
Olive Oil, Eggs, avacados, yogurt, all lovely to eat and use as beauty products. I had a book growing up called "Back to Eden", it was full of DIY beauty potions. Egg White is great for wrinkles however, egg white is good for pimples!! Yes, it is true. When you have a pimple or 2 or oily skin, spread on your egg white and let dry, if you have a few bad ones, leave on awhile, egg white acts as a drawing salve (help my age is showing, anyone have some cover up) as it dries will pull out the nasty. When it comes to DIY: poverty is the mother of invention!! LOL (yes, I know its necessity but when in comes to expensive beauty products vs not expensive DIY for pennies then I use my saying, "poverty is the mother of invention" :). I think avacado is one of Gods great creations, you can eat it cold, as a fruit w/ mango and banana, or, salt and pepper and make it more veg like, put it in a blender w/ yogurt and olive oil and make a hydrating facial. Back in a bit w/ more tasty tid-bits.
OMG vicci13...my mom had that SAME book and she was always doing things out of it. I wonder if she still has it. I should get a copy. Thanks for reminding me!

I love this!!! But I have to admit, I might find myself chewing on my own locks. The recipe sounds good enough to eat, not just slather on my hair.
Would it be wrong to do this treatment with a bag of chips?

i love homemade skin care items and i myself have always used aspirin mask for my face- my acne is almost non-existent now!
Hey Faith,How do you make an aspirin mask? I have never heard of that one?
this sounds like a genius idea i would prob eat half of it before i was done preparing though!

I love homemade beauty products!!!
Wow, that sounds brilliant, easy to do and wonderful for the hair.
Hmmm. Interesting, although I would probably eat it with chips and not have enough left for my hair!
I like that avocado mask. I also do a coconut oil mask. Just get some coconut oil from the grocery store or health food store. I heat it for a few seconds then apply all over my hair and wrap it up. It is a great conditioning treatment. In fact, I am due for another one!
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

I absolutely love avacados, so when I make this mask I'll have to get a little extra.....1 for me and one for my hair:)I can't wait to try this at home! Thanks for the info!
I actually use Avocado, olive oil and a little honey on my hair (face too) or mayo.. or egg yolk (alone). Good tips!

oooh great sounds very interesting ..its crazy lot of food we can put all over the body ...
I always love the sound of face and hair masks like this but I don't think I could actually use one, I'd want to eat the avocado instead of putting it on my hair.

This sounds so good for hair, but I love eating avocados so much that I couldn't bear to put them on my head!
