SOAP AND GLORY! SEXY MOTHERPUCKER LIP PLUMPERS!

Gigi here, with a Semi-Drugstore Disappointment, Not a Great Deal
Is it me, or is the line delineating drugstore and department store makeup blurring in terms of price? I’m doing my best to discover great deal for the world's finest women, but it’s becoming more difficult. “Five and Dime” shops can now be dubbed “Forever in Debt.” Sharond suggested that I try Target; Sonia Kashuk and other brands fit under my category. I first scanned their items online and was pleased. A visit to the closest Target was not as successful.
There were plenty of brands begging to be reviewed—but one lush, inviting midnight shadow by JK Jemma Kid retailed for $18.00. Pixi has a fascinating neutralizing cover-up kit fit for professionals with eight hues to hide anything. What Pixi should hide is the price tag--$28.00!
Target carries Soap and Glory, a creative, retro-looking line of body products with delectable smells and clever titles and packaging. Their body cleansers and butters have received rave reviews. Unfortunately, the reasonably priced sizes of all products were sold out. Left behind were gigantic and costly tubs, already opened (I will let Target know that testers should be made available).
Their “Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Plumping Colors” caught my attention and I did the math as Sweetassgal does—I took the total cost and divided it by the number of items included. For three good-sized tubes of color, $24.00 is fair, and that was my choice for a critique. Don’t fear the colors; they work for all. The set includes a rose, a crimson, and slightly gilted coral, all beautiful. None are too light or dark but leave just a hint of stain on your lips. The scent? Irresistible—chocolate!
I read the packaging in detail. According to Soap and Glory, it is described as a new “extreme-formula lip plumping gloss with scientifically proven powerfill® microspheres that explode in volume up to 10X when they come in contact with water.” Whoa! Was I going to outdo Angelina? Would I be recognizable to those who know me? Would my preserved head be placed in Ripley’s “Believe It or Not?” after my death? This seemed to be powerful stuff!
As a fan of Bare Escentuals’ Buxom Plumper, allow me to explain the “science” behind plumpers. Some use ingredients like cinnamon and ginger to simply irritate the sensitive skin of lips, such as DuWop’s Venom. They cause blood to rush to the surface—thus, there is a tingling sensation, posh appearance, and immediate increase in color. The effects are short-lived; you need to reapply oft en or you will deflate in balloon-like fashion.
Others, like Bare Escentuals’ version, employs collagen-boosting ingredients, emollients to repair dry lips, and Vitamins A and E. When lines from chapped lips are “filled in,” there is an instantaneous benefit, as it makes them look younger as well.
I enjoyed the minty sensation from Soap and Glory’s trio. The formula was just slightly tacky, not enough to stop me from purchasing it again, but comforting, luxurious, and extremely long-lasting. Did it make my lips ten times more voluptuous? No. Two times? No. I would recommend this as a great gloss and color, but it failed as a plumper for me. As they say, “One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor.” This may be the perfect plumper for someone else.
I will now retreat to the corner. I thought I was an educated woman. When there was no noticeable change in the size of my lips, I drank water because the box said that it would enhance the “magic” microspheres. Now, where did I put my dunce cap and stool?
Am I the only one or have you noticed drugstore brands getting pretty pricey? An other Soap and Glory Fans?

Hi Gigi!!! Nice to see your smiling and gorgeous self!I believe this line is the "redheaded stepchild" aka lower priced creation from Marcia Kilgore of the "Bliss" spa fame which would account for the "not so dimey-store" pricing?I am a huge fan of Bliss products, they are effective and cutting-edge for a reasonable price but also have found anything in the "Soap and Glory" line to be a bust and not a bombshell. The packaging is cute and cool and has prompted me to buy for gifts but honestly, the lipglosses you review were very average at best,I agree.I love the "Buxom" glosses as well but if you are serious about that plump, you need to get "FX Lip Fusion" (yes,it's a hefty 50 bucks but lasts a long time..) and get TRULY plumped up!!!I also agree that "drugstore deals" are sliding down that slippery-slope of becoming "cheap products in a cute coat" and alas,"Soap and Glory" is on my no-buy list.
I agree, and JK Jemma Kid is another case in point -- A big name in Britain, Jemma's line was first sold in the US only in Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. Bringing high-end names to Target and other mass-market stores is really an attempt to replicate in cosmetics the success of designer fashion labels such as Isaac Mizrachi. The problem is, as you say, Gigi, that an $18 eyeshadow in no way compares to a $24 cashmere sweater (and its upmarket sister sells for $25 at Bergdorf's, not all that big of a difference.) Not only that, the Target customer has to be given some education as to who these "name" names are before their appearance in-house means anything. Jemma Kidd is virtually unknown in the U.S., so if mainstream department store customers don't know the line, what are the odds that Target shoppers will? Bad marketing on top of bad pricing.
Similar experience here. I love the packaging for Soap and Glory, like the pedigree (Bliss), but can't say that the products live up to my expectations. I've stopped buying them. I DO like seeing the big names at Target though. It gives me a chance (or temptation) to try out names I'd hestitated on in the more expensive stores. Tante Joan is right about Target needing to educate us about the names from the UK and Europe before we are enticed to buy them! I didn't know Jemma Kidd from Captain Kidd!

Are you kidding Champ? Not "overly" anything, you hit it on the head just like you always do. Sounds like you had a good day today, so happy to hear it!I agree, the Jemma Kid line is overpriced considering the quality of the product. I've purchased two lip glosses from her line, one in dress 2 impress (sheer red w/subtle flecks of gold and the other in sassy (sheer bubblegum pink) . Both beautiful colors especially the red one but low quality. It was a bit like being sold a tube of snake oil. Not that I mind a little snake oil now and then for the right price but these prices were similar to my Sephora budget without the great return policy, not good. Why do these semi-high end designers treat us Target Shoppers like the red headed step children mjsred mentioned? I say show us some respect and offer a quality product or STEP OFF! On a more positive, less bitter note, if you have Mini-Megs (like myself) it is a great way to let them try their hand at make up application and to help get them primed to follow in their Mama's makeup addicted shoes. Too much fun!!!
I agree, no overdoing anything here. I was picking up some hairspray at target the other day and my boyfriend exclaimed when he saw Olay wrinkle creams for $40 and up on the shelves. All the way home we were talking about how much more expensive it is to be a woman than a man- even more unfair when you remember the glass ceiling and the fact that we get paid less for doing the same work! Your girls are going to be so lucky when they start going into their teens- my mother doesn't even own a make up brush.
OOPS! That last part was missing the main point. Meant to say that for the Mini-Megs the Jemma Kid line (and one or two, of the others in that area of the store) has a nice tester area. DUH, I am out of brains for the week and it is only Thursday. How am I going to get through all of Friday?
So nice to read a review from you, as always. I can't comment on 'Soap and Glory' products, but I have to agree about how pricy drugstore brands have become. When I was young (waaaay back in the day) I wouldn't be caught dead buying drugstore brands. But as the big name brands became more and more expensive, and department stores shrank, it was either Maybelline and Rimmel or painting my lips with beetroot juice, and coloring my eyelashes with soot, so I downgraded. That was fabulous for a while - now Yikes!!!! 'Drugstore brands' cost a fortune - no more 'cheap and cheerful' bargain buys...

Ok, I'm confused, not too long ago you had posted to all of us not to use lip plumpers EVER because they actually created an allergic reaction in your skin and that your lip swell because of it, thus creating the plump effect. And also creating wrinkles around the mouth. So I stopped using mine, which cost 28.00 by the way and didnt really notice a difference. So why in the world would you promote sexy mother pucker, IT'S A LIP PLUMPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Juju,(BTW,you are gorgeous!)I think that when Meg was telling us NOT to use lip-plumpers,she aso realized that with the products and marketing available out there that many of us would still indulge,LOL! It's a lot like my rants of "no tanning" and knowing that many will still do so...To my way of thinking,Gigi is making more of a statement about the companies/products that are being placed in "discount stores" and this just happens to be a "plumper..."Not sure she is promoting it,I think it's an example of the devil we love to hate,ie,we get sucked into buying it because it's allegedly "cheaper" as it's in this product available at Target? Not sure but I think that's it.I WILL say that as someone who uses the "alternative" to topical lip-plumpers and LOVES the result (but not the pain...) that anytime you are causing swelling around that area, you will risk the little wrinkles but that sometimes it can be a trade-off as many things in "being beautiful" are. :)
I've used S&G before. I used their Scrub Your Nose in it face scrub and really really liked it. It doubles as a kaolin clay mask, so I thought that was pretty good for $13 (you don't really need much either). I bought one of their scrubs in the pink tub - I think it was Flake Away - and the smell was just too much for me! But then they had like the '2nd round' of products in blue that were put out and I tried the Sugar Crush body scrub and liked that scent a whole lot more. SC had brown sugar, sweet lime, almond oil and macadamia grains. Those two scrubs are the only things that I liked, everything else was over-scented or (I thought) over priced. I never tried their lip plumpers since I don't really use lip plumping gloss though, like the lovely Meg, I could also claim the title "Miss No Top Lip." Now after this review, I won't. Thanks for saving me the money, I think that there's an UDPP calling my name...
lip plumpers defy me but i kept on a'trying and helping to support sephora til i read somewhere (likely online - because of course everything online is totally true!) that if you've been struck by any of the herpes simplex viruses (shingles in my case) then you're outaluck with lip plumpers. there was some scientific sounding reason but i probably saw something shiny about then and have forgotten. a friend bought the s&g mother pucker and loves it - she swears it makes her thin lips ample. i tried it and ya, not so much. maybe it's the aforementioned shingles thing - maybe the cosmos is telling me that my lips are big enough but whatever the case i was not impressed. too pricey and too scented for me.
For 2 years I've tried a lot of products that offered to "plump up" the lips. Let's face it, most women wouldn't mind having Angelina Jolie lips. Unfortunately, none of the products worked for me until now. I found online the lip plumping balms by Isabella Pelle and they work. They cost $12.00 for a multipack, and they ship 4 free worldwide. This site was recommended to me by my friend. Check out their site if you want plumper lips. Maria
I've tried the more expensive treatments in better financial times, however, they realy did not work for me, and frankly, I don't have the extra cash waiting around to waste on expensive lip plumpers. From my personal experience with lip plumpers this is a case in point where you don't have to spend a lot to look good. I hope this helps my new friends on this blog.

I have Soap and Glory's Sugar Crush Body Scrub. I picked some up a while ago at Target (aka "Tar-jay") after reading that Bliss created the more affordable Soap and Glory line. This huge tub o' scrub was a very affordable $16.99, which is quite a deal compared to the $65 that Fresh charges for its Brown Sugar Body Polish. The big tub will last for months. It has wiped away all the dead skin from the harsh winter in a couple of weeks of use. Also, the nutty-lime scent is scrumptious -- the smell reminds me of an icy cold margarita on a warm summer day.
Here's the deal...I had forgotten that I had myself purchased a vial of nude shaded motherpucker lip plumper for the sole reason of hoping my skinny-ass lips would pump up the volume into lips that could be seen over a mile away without the use of binoculars! I made my purchase one week day over my lunch hour after seeing this stuff on a Target end cap where you can’t possibly MISS IT! I paid for it; brought it to work; unwrapped it and applied the glob onto my lips and thought “Whoa! I feel a tingle! The taste was a bit off-putting to me but I persevered and let it sit on my lips! I looked in the mirror every five minutes to see if an advanced degree of puffiness was overtaking my lips but no…they did look shiny though! I applied it several times that day and days afterwards and just thought the same old thing..”My lips look super shiny – the nude color actually gave a little bit of zip to my lips if I wore it alone…but MEGA LIPS??? – not so much! Then, as juju5151 so brilliantly pointed out…I also read the recent post telling us about blowing lips up to puffed perfection and then having them fizzle back down to flat lined bagged out slits of lose lips with icky lines to boot… so I TOO tossed out ALL the damaging, dastardly fat lip bragging tubes of unhealthy content for our lips that I had in my purse, dresser and other hidden places I keep backup make-up stuff! So…whether or not this motherpucker brand or any brand can help blow my lips up to the size of inner tubes – I’m not having any of it! GONE! I took that posting about the damage they do to our lips to heart – so no can do a positive review on this one!
Jeanasina!
That's a bit pricey, why not just head over to Sephora and buy a Philosophy lipgloss? They probably equal out in cost!
I just picked up some Soap & Glory "The Righteous Butter" after getting myself a pretty bad sunburn and this stuff is heaven. It really feels like your wearing velvet, just like it says on the jar. It's really helping my gross peeling skin. And it's relieving my very itchy skin. The smell is divine. It smells just like "Dior Cherie", I swear the God. So yummy! The only one bad it is full of paraben but I was in a rush and just grab it without reading the ingredients. Oh well, we can make some exeption. Right!? The smell is worth it along!
i have recently tried the soap and glory lip plumper. While they smell like chocolate which is great, they don't really plump up your lips. It does tingle which I don't mind, although others may do so. I love all soap and glory products. The hair and lotions are great and smell wonderful.
i believe they have this brand at arget and i love it, it is sooo funny but seriously works ;)
j.baby
I've tried lip plumpers before but they don't really work for me. I am not sure why but the tingle feeling i don't really like. These come in such pretty color I would try them just for the colors.
Re Pricey drugstore brands - why is Jemma Kidd at Target so pricey? Sure it's pretty, but I'd rather have a smaller package that costs less, to fit in my tiny dancing purse. We need room in there, so let's start with the size and price. Even Starbucks offers an economy size.SuperStyle (not supersize.)
i tried these a while back they smell gorgeous and the packaging is so kitsch...it does tingle a bit nothing painful compared to some other brands out there (eg the 2faced one burning sensation doesnt do it justice) as for its limp plumping abilites? um not so much but i still bought it again just to use as a gloss...all the soap and glory products are fab and look great on your bathroom shelf (shallow?me never) foam of your life is great lasts alot longer than other shaving foams, smells great and just feels so indulgent and no i dont work for them
I haven't tried these. The only lip plumper that has ever worked for me is lip venom. But I already have huge lips, so I don't really need it. Yeah the line between drugstore and department store products really seems to be blurring. I go to drugstores expecting to get great deals, not a whole in my pocket book.
i love their packaging it is the cutest

i gave up on plumpers long time ago. I am pretty happy with Lip and Tuck by Osmotics Cosmeceuticals- i use it as overnight treatment and wake up to moisturized dark pink lips that have a healthy slightly larger look (maybe 1.5 larger). I dont believe when brands promise x10 volume in anything, even x5 the volume is suspicious whether it is mascara or lip plumper.
Good thing I skipped on this.
Great review. I have been eyeing the S&G but haven't tried it yet. I might try the mask and scrub. On lip plumpers, I love Lip Venom, Venom Gloss by DuWop and I really like the Buxom glosses by Bare Escentuals. Especially in Brandi!!! My natural lips are on the full size of normal, and I do think the ones I mentioned make a bit of difference. On the priceyness of drugstore brands. I don't see the dirt cheap things one used to find, but, I do think there are a lot of good bargains to be had. In a way, I think the drugstore is more fun than it was, more variety both cheaper and pricier.
Wow, the name itself drew me in. I would love to try this out..looks like a cute little package, and it'll be great as a ift i guess. Lol I also got small lips soo yea Im up on it..

Gigi! Between hearing that this is an offshoot of the creator of Bliss brand, and hearing your reviews on this reasonably priced lipgloss, I'm going to have to give it a try! I don't need any lip plumping anyways, my lips are plenty big.I've walked by Soap & Glory, thinking they were another too-expensive-for-Target brand, but it's good to know they're reasonably priced. This whole thing w/Pixi and Jemma Kidd--what the heck? I've seen their products, am not that impressed, and it's overpriced. I'd rather not pay that much for makeup that doesn't have testers, doesn't have a makeup artist on hand, and doesn't have the lenient return policy that makeup counters do.
♥ Lipgloss and Spandex: a blog for gals who look good and run fast
I bought this soon after it came out, and it was an okay gloss, with little to no plumping actions. The marketing and packaging totally sucked me in.
Yummy scent and cute packaging? And at Target, my home away from home? SOLD!
I too bought the Soap and Glory plumpers and was dissapointed, I love the packaging and it was eye catching. Once I tore into it, the colors were very "wearable" for me, the smell was ok and they were sticky in my opinion, the colors look nice one but they DID not plump my lips. I am also a fan of BE Buxoms and this didnt even compare at all. But, not a TOTAL waste because the colors were nice!!! :)
Yes, their packaging got me! I liked the product, but I was expecting a little more. It plumped my lips like any other lip plumping product would. I kind of think it is a placebo effect. It tingled and therefore you "think" its plumping.
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

This is at TARGET?1 Getting it!
I do love the Soap and Glory bath and body products. I just made a trip to Target today, and got a scrub, a dry oil and this really great detoxifying body wash, which I also use as bubble bath, it's called "Wash Almighty Detox Spa". It contains Eucalyptus and chocolate, which might not sound like an amazing combination, but it sure smells like one!
I'm personally quite found of Soap and Glory, but I have to agree that drugstore things are getting a little pricey. I think we get a better deal on this particular brand in the UK though, as Boots (one of the main stockists of S&G) usually have Buy Two Get One Free offers and things like that.As for these, they didn't really plump like I was expecting but I like the sheer colours and OH MY GOSH they smell SO good. *Drools* Don't think I'll be repurchasing though.
I will give t a shot only cause of the name I think it's Hilarous =)

I haven't found any of the lip plumpers to make any REAL difference, and if it does, it is only for a very short period of time! I agree I think it is like a "placebo" because they tingle... I am cursed with small lips and would LOVE to have bigger lips... but Oh well...
Big Lip Ladies--- Be happy with your luscious lips, because us with no lips would love to have them!
hahaha this was a great review...I've been on the lookout for a good lip plumper and after this review I think I will check out the bare minerals one. Thanks!
If the lip plumper repair dry lips, and Vitamins A and E i buy it but no for make something on my lips i don't believe on their products !!!
It is a darn cutely packaged line.... Ive looked at it several times because i am a sucker for vintage stuff : )
These products always draw my attention when I go to Target. The packaging and names are both very catchy! But I agree, they are kind of pricey. This keeps me from purchasing them.If I'm buying something out of a local chain 'drug' store, I'm sorry, but I expect it to be on the cheaper side. If I want to drop $15+ on something, I'll go to Sephora, Ulta, or another like store.I also think half the thing for me is that I'm afraid to stray out of my comfort zone -- My beauty budget is a small one, so dropping $10+ on a drugstore brand is not an easy task for me, especially when the money can be better spent on a company I know and trust the consistency of the products. It's hard not to let the flashy packaging woo me, but I mange to resist! I almost buckled on one of their small makeup cases though, they're just super cute.
I was dissapointed by this product but the packaging is cute : /
I've been wanting to try these but we don't have them in Australia. Thanks to this review and the comments, now I don't want to try them anymore (which is good cause I can't get them anyhow!).
http://www.beautifullyglossy.blogspot.com
I have tried a few items from this line. The only thing Soap & Glory makes that I like so far is "Girliglo" a spray moisturizing mist for after showering. Smells so good. Those lip plumpers didn't work for me, in-fact I will never wear mine again. The tingling the tube mentioned was more like a full out pain in the lips...I'll pass. Lip Fusion lip plumper is my brand choice now. No stinging, perfect application and stays on without any stickiness.
I loved Sexy Mother Pucker! I love the tingly sensation so much that I applied about 20 coats! It made my lips full and plump and it tasted good and I like the color :)
I quite like the packaging, despite the less-than-spectacular product
Britt♥
Thank you for reviewing this. It had caught my eye many times but I was always hesitant to drop the cash on it. Now, I'm very glad I didnt waste my money. Like I need ANOTHER gloss. haha.

I havent tried any of Soap and Glory's cosmetics, but do use some of the face and body products. I love the smell and the packaging, but really i don't think they're any better than other brands, and are too pricey for what they are. I guess t's all part of buying into a brand.
