VITAMIN C AS A HAIR TONER!! BRILLIANT TIP FROM JEANASINA!
Jeanasina here! Hello from another day inside the Freezatorium that is Minneapolis, Minnesota! It's Body Beautiful Wednesday and have I got a story for YOU! Alright people, since we recently covered the topic of ACV - I'm going to keep my review today going with the natural type product motif and tell you what I did this week! At least part of this review is sort of natural if you consider Vitamins kinda natural. LOL!
Let me start with the fact that I am a HUGE fan of Marg Helgenberger on CSI! She is my hero - I like everything about her, especially her hair! I have magazine cut out pictures of her that I look at thinking..."I really want to have her hair!" So...in my constant effort to attempt to be vivacious and Marg like, I picked up a nice crisp box of Strawberry Blonde Hair color by Preference and over the weekend, on Saturday morning, I put that beautiful shade of reddish blonde on my current blonde locks! After I finished coloring; I dried and combed out my hair and thought...,"WOW! I think my hair color looks really pretty!" Then, this color looks rather `orange' next to my skin tones. I decided to go with it and pretend I hadn't tampered with my hair. My boyfriend looked at me and didn't say anything; the people at my job looked at me, didn't say anything (usually a good indication that something might not be right) and so by Monday my sensory indicators were telling me I think I made a mistake! I noticed that the colors I usually love to wear now looked rather putrid on me and I couldn't find colors to wear that would actually compliment my new hair and skin color! Alas! The Village Idiot had struck again! Every morning my bed was covered with outfits that I would try and then discard because they looked awful with my carrot reddish hair! What had I done? The big tell was when I pulled out this orange scarf at the bottom of my closet that I never ever wear and realized my hair was the exact same color. Eh gad! Somebody kill me!
So...I went on line (I am the research queen of the internet) and first investigated more topics about what vinegar does to your hair hoping it strips out color! In my internet searching I came across a website called answerbag.com. It was there I read several testimonials about women who wanted to remove their hair colors without chemicals and expensive salon processes (all which I have done in the past with other hair mistakes) and it was there I read that TWO of the women had RED hair they didn't want and to remove it, they ground up VITAMIN C tablets, capsules, or used vitamin c liquid and added it to small amounts of cheap shampoo (for the most part) like a quarter size dollop! I bit down on piece of chocolate for courage and with trembling hands, I took four - 500 m. vitamin C tablets and attempted to crush them (I have no patience) so I hammered them with my finance's hammer and then managed to scrape up the wide area where the pill remains were now scattered and mixed them up with one tablespoon of one of my more inexpensive shampoos and put it in my WET hair. It didn't cover much and I knew nothing much was going to happen so I again mixed the same amount in a little dish and added that to the current mix and it made enough for me to thoroughly lather my hair and then let the stuff sit! I was really REALLY nervous here...but determined...and I watched my hair like an eagle eyeing up prey and after about 40-45 minutes I decided I better get it off in case something bad was happening! Well ladies and gentlemen...put on your Ripley's Believe it or NOT hats off ...THE RED WAS JUST ABOUT ENTIRELY OUT! I again have my blonde hair that I pretty much had BEFORE the travesty of the red colorization attempt! I still have some reddish highlights but really...I am quite astonished at what it did! So...I thought I'd share this with you. There is a lot of information on the internet about this - many people use many different shampoos and quantities of Vitamin C but the testimonials of this working are out there! Don't get me wrong...in past years I have been a red-hot RED HEAD twice in this incarnation but since I'm older it's not as good on me as it was! I love Red Hair!!!! I look at every red headed man and woman I see and wish I had their hair! But this gave me full realization that I look better as a blonde and am again able to wear all my favorite outfits each day with pride! I'm sure there are others of you out there who have tried things like this so ladies and gentlemen...let your stories rip! By the way if you want to read the stories I read which led up to my even having the courage to try this...here's the exact link: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/20099 Hope to be with you all again soon! Hidden opinionators out there...this is your chance to tell your quirky story - we love to hear from all of you!
I KNOW a lot of you have done things like this with good and/or bad outcomes! SHARE!!!

Jeanasina; As a red head myself, I've never had this issue. But I like the concept. However, the white vinegar will work for those of you blonde (natural or otherwise) out there that have been in a pool and surface with the 'green' tinge. No need to cower or run to the beauty parlor! Just wash and rinse with about a 1/4 cup white vinegar and about a saucepan of cool water. Repeat if necessary. Specialnote - never noticed it, Jean. But you had a hat on!!!! Next time ask me. Vitamins are as good onthe inside as well as the outside ---
Stylemama! Oh my gosh - I so can relate to your story too! When I was young and first married, the popular show on TV was Charlie’s Angels. At the time I had long auburn nice shiny hair past my shoulders! I was enamored with the angel’s hair of course and wanted to look like . So one day I brought a photo from a magazine of with her beautiful layered wavy hair and brought it to the beauty shop (they called them that in the 70’s) about a block away located between a barber shop and a gas station. Yes...What was I thinking? Anyway, even though I noticed that a lot of OLD LADIES came out of that shop, it didn’t stop me from going in with high hopes and a picture from a magazine! I talked to a beautician there who HAD hair like in my photograph and asked her if she could make ME look like that in the hair department! She assured me she could! So later that week, on a Saturday I walked up to the little shop and allowed her to destroy my head. She put in the perm rods and left them there for a very LONG LONG LONG time and she even said “Oh!” as she took them out and when she finished my hair looked like a tight afro - BONE DRY - horrid! With tears streaming down my face, I actually PAID for the hair ruination and my husband by then came walking up to meet me because I had been gone for HOURS and as soon as he saw me I just balled and he said “It’s not THAT bad!” Then I had to go to work the following Monday and for days all I heard was “WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL HAIR?” Total travesty. Perms are killers - hair murderers - especially in the hands of old lady perm experts!
Jeanasina!
P.S....I happen to love your blonde hair. And I can't believe you're freakingg 60! You are gorgeous!
Wow Jeanasina thanks for this info! I had no idea you could do this! I'm really glad it worked for you! I had my hair stripped when I was in high school and it was the worst thing EVER. I am still suffering from that choice and it was 5 years ago. My hair has never gone back. Stylemama your story cracked me up!!! I really admire that you were able to laugh about it! I would have been in tears for the next 2 years. I went to a new stylist once because she cost half the price and she hacked and hacked and hacked and I was too timid to say anything... I ended up with one of those mushroom/bowl cuts. It was a month before senior pictures.
Well, you learn something new every day!! I will keep that in mind in-case I get a wild hair to change my hair. Does it only take out red? Thanks for the informative review.
Hello, vicci13 here, I didn't know about this great hair rememdy, but what I do have for you is Vitamin C for your skin, take vitamin c, you can buy vitamin C crystals or crush up your own, mix it with a nice facial lotion or serum (Olay regenerist lotion and serum gets a big positive nod from consumer reports) and you have a vitamin C skin treatment. People spend upwards of $70 for this Vitamin C miracle cream. The dermatologist told my sister about this. You see expensive vit C treatments. Now you can make your own. Straight from the dermatologist, well almost, from the derm doc to my sister to me to you. :)You can use your vitamin C to strip out unwanted hair color, make your skin glow, and chase away a cold when taken internally.
Why thank you Angieb! Why, oh why, do we let these things happen to our hair and THEN turn around, pay for it and say thank you???? Jean, I loved watching Charlie's Angels too! In fact, when my girls and I go to nice hotels we like to run down the halls toward the elevators pretending to be Charlie's Angel's. The cut outs in front of the doors are perfect for running into and slamming your back against, while holding finger guns in bent elbows. Or on our way to the video store at midnight, I drive a black caddy, it goes into stealth mode. BTW, I once heard you could remove hair color by using laundry soap. That sounds harsh; I like the vitamin C idea. You ladies are brave, coloring your own hair! Love it!
That's too funny stylemama, I played Charlies Angels too (complete with bended elbow and finger gun)! What's better than a privite detective with great hair? It's nice to know I'm not the only one.
Your story kind of reminds me of a perm I once got. Shortly, after my oldest daughter was born I decided I needed to do something, ANYTHING to spruce up my look. That was my first mistake. I should have just went with the whole new mother, leaky breasts, greasy matted hair, smelly grunge look. If I had embraced my situation I would have realized just how quickly that phase really does pass. On the other hand, the aftershocks of a bad perm can seemingly last forever. What baffles me the most, is why I ever let my hair stylist: A. Come near me with perm solution... B. Continue to use small perm rods even though I KNEW they look completely wrong... and C. Come near me with perm solution... The idea came from a magazine article that described beautiful women getting these "spot" like perms, where medium sized rollers are place haphazardly in alternating directions. The end result being a " wash and wear", tousled, beachy look. Perfect! Just what every new Mother needs. I did not get that look. MY look was much more natty french poodle, repeatedly struck by lightening-ish. To further aggravate the ozone layer sitting on my top of my shoulders, my stylist suggested we color it a rich brown for added sheen. When my bad perm met up with even worse coloring, my hair finally gave up and turned into this dull, strange shade of brown not found in nature. It was so bad, that laughter was my only hope for survival! Who knows, that terrible perm could have been one of the reasons my postpartum depression was so short lived. My funky perm experience served as a great reminder regarding the healing power of laughter. I was also reminded that a perm can take a really, really, really long time to grow out. In part, I did achieve effortless hair, because NO amount of effort could change that look! I never did go back to that salon...........
Vagabond! From the articles I read - it lifted out pretty much any color you didn’t want in! One lady had dyed her hair black and said it was like dull black shoe polish so she did this little vitamin/shampoo combo and said the bad black came out and left her with highlighted black hair that she was going for (a much lighter shade!) I read many stories of many colors coming out - so it’s not just a red thing! In the past I have stripped out an unfortunate color with heavy product I got at Sally’s beauty store but it took color out in degrees! You know there were patches of orange and patches of white and patches of whatever color I still had - bad scene. I also have had my hair chemically stripped at a beauty salon by a professional years ago but when they do that, your hair color is REALLY stripped to a vibrant light orange color and after you do THAT process, then they put on a new color which usually is what you wanted in the first place. VERY HARD ON YOUR HAIR AND DAMAGING! I wouldn’t do it again at the salon! Big $$$’s too for all that! This just was so easy and my hair was a bit drier after I did it but it was overall taken care of in a great result and the fact that your original color is still there - quite astonishing to me! I read that if you do it again and again, more and more color will come out. I DID keep my hat on a LOT after I put the red in! LOL!!!
Jeanasina!
I'm lovin' the last two weeks of tips Jeanasina! Great job! I once dyed my hair and it came out Grace Slick black! My son asked me where my broom was! I tried everything to tone it down before giving into the professionals, which I finally did. But it's great to have this tip to take the fear out of experimenting! Can't wait to see what you come up with for next week. I'm a fan!
Oh goodness...Where to start? Should I begin with the orange hair of my first hair coloring experience? My gothic stage of long black tresses? Perhaps the perm that left my hair worse than carrot top's frayed and frizzed locks? I think I'll settle with this one from my early days of school: pulling burgendy hair color out by bleaching. I to adore that fiery allure which only a red-head (alright, and a few brunettes) have, and it worked for me, but alas, my mood swings kicked in and all I saw was blonde. I suppose you could say I'm one of those types who's "colors change with the seasons." But anyway! My girlfriends helped me to do it in the bathroom and it was all I could do to keep myself from scratching my poor itchy scalp. After the deed was done and the final result was presented I didn't know whether to laugh or scream. Imagine if you will, a blonde with dark roots. Now reverse the blonde with dark red and the 'dark roots' with bright yellow. Vuala! My hair.Since that time I did even worse things but I am finally back to my natural color and have been able to fend off the urge to repeat any of my offenses.
You are such a hot mess,LOLROF! I once burnt the top layer of skin from my face after reading that "lemon juice acts as a natural toner..."About 3 lemons later,I was confident that my pores were spotless. Then the redness came, the itching started and it took @ a month before I looked "decent" again,LOL! Moral is that I think all of us might be guilty of over-zealous use of inproper products from time to time? Marg is an exceptionally gorgeous woman I agree...so are you and I love your story,as usual!
That is a very helpful tip. If I ever have a coloring mishap I will try this. I have a tip. I seriously think my mom has found the fountain of youth when it comes to hair. My mom is in her early 50's. She started going gray a couple of years ago. Not super gray, but just a little bit. She recently was watching a show where a doctor was saying that a mixture of vinegar and honey is good for your body. Well my mom always likes to try out new home remedies. So she started drinking a mixture of vinegar, water, and honey. And soon after her gray hair disappeared. Her hair actually started growing a vibrant strawberry brownish blonde again. Keep in mind that my mother has never colored her hair her entire life. Whenever her hair starts to grow out gray again she drinks her special drink and the gray goes away. It is crazy, but awesome!
WOW, that pretty cool, thanks for sharing.. I think Imma go try that on my black hair..and see what how it looks.! lol wierd but tru...

oh no! i hate hte mistakable die jobs. it is a scary scene to do at home. i laugh to myself when i see girls in walmart with yellow orange hair who refuse to admit they die. they walk around and flirt like they were born a hot blonde haha. that was mean, but when they would come through my line and act like they were better iw ould only tell myself..."if you are so much better why are you shopping at my place of work...WALMART" anyways, good thing there are kits to remove die and to fix the problems. :)

The tips here are just amazing. I am thrilled to know this one. I will use it when I need to. A while back I could have seriously used it. I bet a low dose and a shorter time would only strip a bit. And hmmm, I buy the vitamin C power from Philosophy and add to my firming serum. I am going to give this a try (crushing Vitamin C tabs) when I run out. I love MMU - sure, I learn of all kinds of new stuff I must have, but, then I get all these great ways to save money.
never heard of this tip to add to all the good things that vitamin c contributes to!

I wish I would have read about this 2 years ago! This is a great tip. I wonder if it works for black.
I used to think that if you pay more, you get a better job done and I found out that not the truth. I used to go to the best hairdersser in town and I'd come home always unsatisfied. Once I asked for caramel highlights on my hair and they did flourescent red ones (looks as bad as it sounds, yes) and that is only one of my hair disaster horror stories. Now I found a stylist that takes me 1/3 of the money, is two steps away from my house and does exactly what I tell her to.
that's a horrible outcome frommm whoever dyed your hair! hahaha
A friend of mine colored my hair last night with a box of Clairol temporary dye. I have never colored my hair in my 24 years, and wanted to try temporary dye first (thank goodness I did). I am a natural blonde, a very light colored blonde at that, and the box of strawberry blonde hair color made my hair desperate housewife red!!! It was uneven in areas, orange in parts, BRIGHT vibrant red in others, and strawberry blonde in the middle back portion of my head. While the red made my blue eyes look AMAZING, it completely washed out my fair skin. I tried EVERY home remedy I could find online today to get the color out. Everything from baking soda, to lemon juice, to dishwashing soap. Nothing worked!!! I was hesitant running across this post, but tried it anyway. The first 45 min round did nothing. I was completely discouraged! I decided to try it one last time while soaking in a steamy hot bath. 45 min later, my hair was blonde again!!! I let it sit for 30 min outside the water, and 15 soaking under the hot water. I have light strawberry streaks here and there, but my overall color is back, my hair is still soft, and I didnt have to seek professional help. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I will forever appreciate my natural blonde hair!
I'm trying that!

Vitamins? Really? Who knew? I didn't! I should deffinately try this. I'm sure if it toned out that red it would deffinately tone out yellow. I love all things natural, I wonder if it would work the same if you just took it regularly... I think my fiancee would call me crazy if he came in seeing me crushing up vitamins with his hammer. = P

Def want this!
i need to get some of that stuff!

Now I know what to have at hand if I die my hair and I do not like the outcome. Great info!!
wow. really? now I'm going to have to try this.
That is excited.
