NIOXIN SCALP THERAPY! HUMP DAY HAIR DAY!
Sharond in for Katie for Wednesday Hump Hair Day!...
Years ago I was losing my hair at a rate that had me very concerned. After going to the doctor to see if anything was wrong and getting a clean bill of health, I really feared I was following in my aunt's footsteps who had lost all her hair including eyelashes and eyebrows. I quickly started researching products to help as I was planning to go down fighting. One product I found was the Nioxin line of hair products. I bought the complete set, used them faithfully, and still my hair filled the drain. I was soon diagnosed with thyroid disease and a little Synthroid corrected the hair loss problem. The one product of the line I still use today is the Nioxin Scalp Therapy for normal hair. I hope this information is helpful; perhaps my success is due to thyroid medication but I have heard positive and negative comments about this item.
When we think about it, our scalp is really an extension of our facial skin and we all know the amount of money and time we spend on caring for that. Like our facial skin, our scalp is susceptible to everything we come in contact with every day such as toxins, air pollutants, chlorine, sunlight, minerals and water pollution which can affect the skin and contribute to thinning hair and aging the scalp. Nioxin Scalp Therapy is advertised as a product to keep your scalp healthy.
Nioxin Scalp Therapy is a light blue, almost turquoise-colored thick liquid. The first thing you notice is a quite strong minty fragrance. The instructions tell you to massage into your hair and scalp and leave on for 1 to 3 minutes. After about a minute you notice a slight tingle that feels so wonderful on your scalp. I enjoy the tingling almost as much as the mini scalp massage given by my hairdresser. After rinsing and towel drying, your hair is easy to comb out so this item does have some detangling ingredients. I feel my scalp is more moisturized, less dry and has just a healthier feel after using it twice a week. My hair does have a slight minty scent for about a day after use. It isn't strong; however, people I am talking to have commented that I smell like mint, while others say my hair smelled so clean. This is something to keep in mind if you want your perfume to be what people notice first.
The natural ingredients in Scalp Therapy read like a health food store essential oil shelf: Salvia, aloe, yucca, calendula, geranium and melissa to just name a few. I didn't notice any mentha or fragrance in the ingredient list, so I am unsure where the strong mint scent comes from. You can buy Scalp Therapy in several different sizes and formulas at most salons, drug stores and internet sites. I find that my shoulder-length hair requires a quarter size amount to thoroughly cover the hair and still have enough to massage into the scalp. My husband, who has lost most of his hair, loves the way Scalp Therapy cleans the scalp and removes the hair follicular “bumps” that come from male pattern baldness. Another added benefit my hairdresser told me about is that this product makes a wonderful shave cream for your legs. I haven’t gone back to ordinary shave cream since. I love multi-tasking products that really work and this one does!

So sorry to be a reposter but this is something very very important that I can'tbelieve I didn't mention in my first review. It just dawned on me so you have myapologies!! If you are fortunate to experience hair re-growth using Nioxin, pleaseremember that you MUST continue to use the product forever. If you do not, you willeventually lose the hair that you grew back! That is true with Rogaine or any othertopical products that are used to treat hairloss. Go back to your old routine, go backto having hair loss!! But if it really worked for you, why would you want to use anything else anyway, right? Cheers again!!
Nioxin.....a great product to use even with underlying medical conditions. Like you said inyour review, you needed medication to regulate your thyroid which was the main culprit toyour hairloss. I have used Nioxin on and off through the years without noticing any typeof hairloss recovery. Hormones play the major factor with women's hair loss issues. This product can help slightly but you will not see major results. Keeping the scalp clean ofsebum and the other things that can clog a follicle is very important when experiencing hair loss. The only hair that you can recover with only using any type of topical productis the hair that still has a live follicle. If the pore is clogged for too long, that follicle will eventually die. Just as in using Rogaine or any other type of perscriptionthat is topical, it cleans the pore, letting the hair regrow. It will not make a folliclecome back to life that has already died off. Just as a man uses the topicals in the crownarea of the scalp, what come back is more of a peach fuzz type hair, not a full blown re-grown thick healty hair. It all comes from the inside that is why it is very important tohave a medical evaluation if you are experiencing major hair loss. To also note, if you recently had any type of surgery, going under anethstesia, you can and probably will experience some type of hair loss. It will eventually come back though, which is a goodthing! When being checked for hairloss issues with your doctor, you may also want to takenotice of your fingernails to see if there are any odd ridges in them that you had notexperienced before. Just a little tip to help. All and all Nioxin is a great healthyscalp product. Having a healthy scalp does help you to produce healthy hair. The tinglingand the massaging of the scalp helps also. It is called a vasodiolator(?spelling) whichmeans it increases the blood flow to that area which in turn promotes hair growth. Hope this tidbit of information I provided helps as this is my first review because I am a new member to Meg's makeup.
Welcome!!! Your fabulously-written input is much appreciated I am sure!I haven't tried the Nioxin line...have seen it around though and have heardthat it's "effective"...SO many things can affect out skin, nails, and hair and it's just so wonderful to be able to sort througha few of them here!
Hello again ladies.....adding more input to the second post of Sharond...she is correct in explaining damaged hair cannot go back to being completely healthy after damage has occured. Shampoos and conditioners do mainly coat the hair. But we can use products to help strengthen and moisturize that hair that has already been damaged. Here is a rule of thumb to follow when choosing the correct products for your hair. If your hair has any type of chemical damage from bleaching, haircolor, perming, etc......you want to use a condtioner that contains alot of protein to help strengthen the hair. If your hair has alot of mechanical damage from blow drying, curling irons, and straightening irons......you want to use a product that contains alot of moisture. If you have both, combine a protein based and a moisturizing based conditoner. I actually use a deep conditoner on the ends of my hair every single day to keep them from getting too damaged. I cannot use it all over because it makes my fine hair too limp. Have a great day full of beauty and cheers to all of you!!
Thank you for explaining how this works. In writing the review I have a limit on the number of words and what you wrote is an excellent addition to what I wrote. I wanted everyone to know that cleaning the scalp and good nutrition is what makes hair beautiful. A shampoo or conditioner can not repair broken ends or damaged shafts, only coat them. Welcome to Megs and we hope to hear from you more.

I've always wondered about this and how it works. I have if you read past articles damanged hair now and even a bald spot from a dreaded hairdresser. So by any chance did your hair regrow at all??
Hello ladeez... I had to add my 2 cents because I actually use this stuff and the matching conditioner. Recently I switched hair ladies (my former hair guru retired) and so I went to see my friend Vanessa's mom who works is a traditional old lady hair salon way out in Covina. She looked at my hair and the first piece of advice she gave to me was - get a water filter on your shower. Apparently in West Hollywood, the water is the most chlorinated water in SoCal and it just strips your hair of everything... no wonder my hair was always so drab and never held any color or highlights! My fine, fragile, baby soft dishwater blond hair was getting dull, lifeless and dried out because of my own shower!! The second piece of advice she gave me was to use Nioxin shampoo and conditioner along with a super rich conditioner on the ends. The Nioxin shampoo smells like medicine so naturally it must be doing something and the conditioner has peppermint in it so it makes your scalp all tingly. So I've been using the stuff for the last three months and I don't know if its the Nioxin or the water filter on my shower but either way, its like I have a whole new head. Go figure.
very helpful tips.. my hair needs some of this stuff. is super dead with all the bleaching and ironing as well.
This stuff also works great on for anyone who has a flaky scalp. I use it religiously!
Interesting product, I think my scalp isn't at its healthiest state right now. I'm going to try to do some natural remedies. If all else fails, I'm going to give this a try.
I may give this a try as my scalp has suddenly become insanely dry. I think I am allergic to the perfume in my current shampoo so this may be a better option. From the reviews it seems worthy of trying! Thanks!
ooh i love multitasking things!! i like to have one bottle that can be used for a bunch of different things :D however the strong scent doesnt sound to pleasing to me, i like the fruity shampoos :)
I actually use Nioxin Scalp Renew. Not because my hair is thinning (as if..I have way to much hair on my head!) but because I have a terribly itchy, flaky scalp and when I went to my salon they treated me with it and my hair and scalp felt so fresh and healthy! It's only supposed to be sold to salons (not sure why), it isn't dangerous, but I bought a 3 pack online and do it once a month. It really helps relieve my scalp..especially since I actually had raw spots from scratching.

I did use the shampoo and the conditioner in the starter kit. I like the tingly feeling but not sure if it did anything for my scalp. I eventually switched back to my Frederic Frekkai Color shampoo and conditioner. My hair is so soft and silky after. However, since I recently had surgery, the first couple of days, I shedded like crazy! I'm taking the Nioxin vitamins now, hopefully, it'll get better.
thanks for the repost... helpful tip :\i know i don't need this at my age.. but I feel like my hair is so thin!would this help it grow faster?
It won't make your hair grow faster, but it'll make it grow in thicker. It opens the hair's follicles so the strand has more room.

I'm going to try it.
The whole Nioxin line is lovely! I love the way it makes your scalp feel. The scalp treatments at the salon's are very relaxing also while therapeutic to your scalp.
