LUSH BIG SHAMPOO! HUMP DAY HAIR DAY!
Sharond here, filling in for Katie on Hump Day, Hair Day!
My name is Sharond and I will be helping Meg and the other reviewers by filling in as needed while they tend to personal matters! I'm the beauty pinch hitter!
First, a bit about my own hair: at 52, I have never colored it, had a perm in more than 25 years and don’t use a blow dryer, curling iron or heated curlers. I would say that my hair is about as virgin as it can get. I was a white blonde until my late twenties, having my son in my early thirties, my hair started to turn into a golden brown with blonde highlights. At the age of 40, I had lost about half of my fine thin hair and was diagnosed with thyroid problems. What has grown back is a mish-mash of all sorts of hair. Part is still straight and thin, part is uncontrollably curly, and then part is thick with wonderful waves which I love. Best of all, I can only count a few gray’s. I shy away from products that are loaded with ingredients which can’t be pronounced or need a chemist to understand.
I love Lush products. Period. I stumbled across their store while in Cobh, Ireland in 2004. I spent almost my whole vacation allowance in that one shop. I was very surprised to discover they are a large company based out of Vancouver, Canada, though personal with the container products stamped with a sticker of the person who made it. Lush is a “green” company with a lot of their products not wrapped; 75% are vegan, 100% vegetarian, and never tested on animals. Their website is very easy to use with all products with ingredients listed, organized so they are easy to find, quick shipping, and with orders come samples to try. The stores are very generous with samples also. The site also has a forum where people comment about the products or ask for/offer advice.
I opted to try the shampoo, BIG. When I first opened the container and looked at this gelatinous salt, I was a bit hesitant on how to use it. I held the container up to my nose and was mentally transported to the beach, with the mingled scents of the ocean and a margarita in my hand. Diving in, I put a big glob on my finger and rubbed the salt through my hair. I was surprised to find my head so overloaded with bubbles that I need to rinse. The salt felt good on the scalp and my hair was clean, squeaky clean, and really shiny.
My hairdresser noticed that I was using a different product and commented that my hair was in the best condition she had ever seen it. I wash my hair every day and did notice that it tended to dry it out. I found that once or twice a week was about right for me as it is for many women. The more I used the shampoo, the thicker my hair seemed to get. I think it was because of the residues of formershampoo’s and conditioner’s, like the different waxes andparabens, were finally being washed away. BIG comes in an 11.6-ounce cup which makes it hard to take with you when traveling. Do not let the price
scare you; a little goes a long way. I would say a small pea amount is more than enough for shoulder-length hair. There is an added benefit to BIG: that works great as a salt rub for buffing dry hands, elbows, feet and more.

This sounds amazing. Lately I've been noticing my hair getting dingy and my perm getting flat. I miss my big hair!!!Would this product be worth the splurge (and skipping a night on the town drinking)??? I'll wait for more reviews to come in before I make a decision, but I'm seriously so intrigued by this stuff! Thanks for the beauty pinch hitting, Sharond!
I'm sorry to be a downer. I tried this product a couple of years ago hoping for the squeaky clean/stimulating effect of the salt. I also thought it would help create shine for my frizzy/dry hair. I think I used it twice - I felt that it was difficult to work the salt through my hair to keep it on my scalp, so I used a lot of product. I had trouble rinsing all the salt chunks out, and I didn't notice any benefits. I do like other Lush products (the exfoliating bars and bath bombs are wonderful!), but this shampoo is just not for me.
I ADORE Lush. My hair has never been in better shape since I started using their hair products. It's softer, thicker, and stronger. :D
My first day of training at LUSH was last night. It was wonderful! I got to test a whole bunch of products and learn a lot about the brand. I also learned, in our basic haircare overview, that you should NOT use Big or Seanik on color-treated hair, as the salt causes color to fade faster. Things you can use, however, are: any other LUSH shampoo! I recommend Ultimate Shine for limp and dull hair, Curly Wurly or Godiva for dry hair, and Jumping Juniper for oily hair if you're into the solid shampoos. I Love Juicy is great for getting all the crap out of your hair and leaving it squeaky clean and volumized, so those of us with color-treated hair and fine hair may want to give that a whirl!
I'm intrigued by the salt for really scrubbing my scalp (I just love really digging inand getting a clean as a whistle scalp) but I'm a little weary about the squeaky cleanhair part for my hair type. I'm extremely dry and frizzy and need very emolient and conditioning shampoo to keep the frizzies at bay. But I also find those shampoo's don'tdo much towards thickening and volumizing so I'm torn. Chime in ladies if you havecurly and dry hair and find that this works for you to moisturize while still thickening.as well. I'd love to know and thanks for the new product info Sharond...LOVE to findout about new things!!!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
HEY Sharond!!! Great review and so glad you're on the job!!!LUSH...OMG...the word brings me to my knees.I had tried several years ago to order from the website only to have my products arrive in a melted,sordid-state here in South Texas where it gets hot and stays hot and honestly, customs didnt' care at the time,LOL! They only "ship" from Canada and the US stores can't ship to you.:( Trust me,I've tried to bribe them and it's a no go.Soooo....whenever I traveled someplace that had a "physical LUSH",I'd haul a small suitcase with me with FULL intent on filling it up and bringing it home...pre the airlines feeling they have to charge us $25.00 for a damn checked bag! Best haul was at the LUSH in New Orleans 2 years ago when my husband was also intrigued by the incredible sights, smells, and fabulous staff(every one I've been in has wonderful LUSHIES who work there!) and spoiled me ridiculously, two suitcases that trip,LOL! Fast forward...I beg my sis in Orlando to ship me stuff now,I send a list and she shops for me but JUST found out that the Macy's in San Antonio (60 miles east) HAS a small satellite LUSH now and I'm heading there this weekend to stock up.I've used more products than I want to admit to and honestly? Nothing comes close to LUSH in some areas...their bath yummies, the fresh face masks, and the soaps are all worth fighting for! I have NOT tried the shampoo as my hair is fine and super-colorprocessed but might just have to pick up a tub and give it a whirl based on this! The LUSH forum is fabulous and fun too...Damn...I love LUSH!!!
I really want to like Lush a lot more than I do. It makes me sad that several of their products contain nasties like SLS and parabens (according to the provided ingredient lists).
I have only tried a few things from LUSH, including their shampoo bar which I really liked. Thank you for the warning about using BIG on color-treated hair vexy, I am going to have to try Curly Wurly or Godiva soon! Thanks Gals, as always you completely rock!
I am sad to say that up to this point I had not heard of LUSH! This is an outrage and a travesty for me big time! After reading this great review by sharond I immediately went to the LUSH website and as I write this, I am down on my knees praying that Meg will send some LUSH items my way to review! It sounds like I would be deliriously intoxicated just by the fragrances from these nurturing products! Can I just say that I am extraordinarily elated for Vexy to have landed a new job working there! I am thinking she will excel for them! The LUSH website sure makes it sound like all of their products are simply amazing and I took the time to read the on-site reviews on several of the products I am interested in for dry skin and dry hair and WOW times a billion is what it sounds like users of LUSH products experience! I wish I had any of those hair altering treatments on my head right now!

LUSH bath bomb and solid bubble bath bars are the BEST and for a while I used their moisturizer which you keep in the fridge to keep it "fresh" - nothing like a yummy smelling cool cream to slather on after a long hot fragrant bath of bubbles.... I have nothing but love for LUSH. Discovered it in Canada in the mid 90's and have have happily watched the LUSH empire grow until they actually put a store in my hood in Beverly Hills on Beverly Drive... its a very dangerous place for me to shop because when I get in there, I just can't stop. Just thinking about it now and I think I'll make a date with the LUSH store this weekend. If you haven't tried it, definitely DO - their products (bath, shower gels, shampoos etc.) are great OVERALL and a much better value than what you buy at CVS. Check out the site and find a LUSH near you - they are everywhere these days.. LOVE LUSH!!
Good to know! I was wondering if the salt would fade color-treated hair.
You answered my question - what kind of conditioner to use with this. Jungle it is!
Thanks for the recommendation. I've been wanting to try a natural shampoo. I'll look for this one when I come across a Lush store.
I am so so on LUSH. I like the bombs and bubble bars, and like the Dream Cream, but while nice to use, there are other things I like as well. I have never used the Big shampoo but have used and liked several of the solid shampoo bars.
i love lush products but have been on a financial diet from there - this makes me want to run to the mall for more

I got a sample-sized container of this on Monday in the $15 haircare kit, along with a squeaky green shampoo bar, the big shine shampoo bar, veganese and jungle conditioners, king of mods styling gel, and the hsuan wen hua hair treatment.I have pretty thick, medium textured hair that tends to lay flat becuase it can be quite heavy. Last weekend I got a new cut, a long-ish swing that hits at my collarbone at the longest point in front. It was also heavily thinned out in parts so that it lays right. I also brightened up my natural light red with a slightly darker, more intense copper. So I ran it through the ringers.I tried the BIG shampoo a couple of days ago, and followed it up with the Veganese conditioner. I thought the smells complimented one another, so that was the intense thinking that went into that day's hair routine. I followed up with my usual blow dry and flat iron touch up so that it flipped under and not out. The results were...well...I won't say amazing, because it did seem a bit more dried out at the ends than usual, but still very shocking. The biggest thing I noticed was that my hair actually FELT like it was lifting up, up, and away from my scalp. I could definitely feel the body! The light citrus scent was nice and stuck around ALL day, and I'm a smoker..so I usually just smell like smoke. But someone actually pointed out to me that my hair smelled like perfume, and asked what KIND it was...I do like this. I don't know if the dried out ends were just the weather, as it's been extremely humid and hot here the past 10 days or so, or if it was the shampoo, or maybe even that it's a change from the silicone-packed hair products that I've been using up until this. Either way, I will relish using the rest of my sample jar up. I think it's a winner, I'm just not sure if it's the right one for me or not.
I'm leery about trying Lush Shampoos because I am always allergic to the perfume additives. Also will this product make already thick hair even thicker? Because that would be an issue with me. I already have enough hair for a small country and controlling it is hard enough. I will have to stop in the Lush store next time I am around one. Thanks for the great, honest review!
I don't really think that it makes thick hair thicker. I have thick hair, and it didn't seem to make it thicker so much as just...a bit drier? Fluffier, maybe...It's hard to describe. I don't think it's exactly the right thing for me, although it IS a good shampoo. It smells heavenly. I prefer the ultimate shine shampoo puck from lush over this.
I am going to try my hair is soooo thin that I would try anything to make it thicker =s

I want hair thick enough to hold a Bump It!
Great review. I have never tried any of Lush's shampoos. But this is calling my name. It seems like my hair has a lot of product buildup. I would really like my hair stripped of all the crap. Are their shampoos really moisturizing? I have dry hair and I always need to use shampoos with a lot of moisturizers in them.
I have a Lush face soap (thanks Meg!) and I must say, the products are life-savers. If I hadn't just invested in some shampoo I'd buy this, but alas (does anyone say that anymore?), I'm 1 week too late!
Now that I have a Lush store close to my work I'm so tempted to try more of their products. I used to use the solid shampoo bars years ago, but that was before I started colouring my hair. I'm so tempted to try some of their hair products again.

i;ve never tried lush products! they seem like such a great company (:does anyone think this would work for naturally flat hair?
i llllove lush, but havent had any of their products in aaages, i dont know why though, perhaps because i dont see a store handy in my area.. maybe there is one somewhere. I still havent found my hg hair products yet.. still looking and it is a bout time i tried lush because so far i have only tried their soaps.
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
adore big. if the scent doesnt get you, the deep scrub will. as a lush obsessor, i know that this is a product thats easy to love. not an everyday use because it really does give quite a scrub, but with two uses a week, youll really start to see a difference. amazing buy for anyone with fine or flat hair
I looooooove Lush hair products!!!!!! I bought the solid shampoos in karma and squeaky clean and the smallest bottle of veganese conditioner back at the bigining of August. It seemed like a lot at the time (about $28), but I just ran out about 2 weeks ago!!! Not bad at all. I used to spend more on drugstore brand stuff within that same ammount of time.I've tried the big before, but I prefer the solid shampoo bars. Supposedly the seanik (sp?) kind is the same as Big, but in solid puck form.

Hmm. I'll give it a try.
I'm a little scared of using their shampoos - I colour my hair red and definitely dont want anything stripping the dye from it. I used MOP a while ago which was designed for fine hair and it did what it said and made my hair light and bouncy....So bouncy it was flyaway and way too static.

I've heard such good things about Big shampoo, but I've never tried it. I'll add this to my wish list for when I'm near a brick and mortar Lush. Shipping costs are too expensive to buy online, and I never get the free samples that other people seem to get when they buy in store.
I've never used any of the Lush products before, but I keep hearing good things about their line. I'm really thinking I should get a product for my own hair.

I'm dying to try this! Will have to order from their site!

I am a Lushaholic but their shampoo tends to scare me. Last time I went in a SA tried to sell me DEEP DEEP purple hair shampoo supposedly for light blonde color treated hair. I just could not do it. I own a buttload of bath bombs and bubble bars tho so if you like to take baths like me you should definitely look into some of those!
Thanks for the article meg :D
Love the bath bombs.
i really like lush shampoo bars. they're great for travel, economical as they last a while, and don't use any packaging, so they're good for the environment. i want to try big b/c i love the smell of limes, and i really never got into the 90's super sleek hair.
i really really wanna try but it's kinda expensive. :/ lame!!
