MAYBELLINE GREAT LASH MASCARA! DRUGSTORE DEALS!
Meg here, I'm going to be covering todays Drugstore Deal. Our hearts and prayers go out to our resident DD writer Gigi who has suffered a death in her family. We hope you're feeling better soon!
I'm going to try to send you a DD Gigi would approve of! Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, friend or foe? Women go insane for the iconic pink tube and green cap. Millions of them, in fact, Maybelline Great Lash is America's #1 best selling mascara, I always see it as "Editor's Pick." I see it mentioned in all sorts of celebrity magazines as being in so-and-so's cosmetic purse and top make-up artists "love it! Can't live without it!"
I may get ripped apart for this but I think the Emperor's Without Clothes!
It's not bad, It's around $4.50, it makes my lashes black, umm the tube is nostalgic and reminds me of Palm Beach prep and Lily Pulitzer and well, that's about it. I never put it on and say "Wow! Maybe I'm not born with it, it is Maybelline! Good Golly no wonder this is #1! I just expect more then just making my lashes black. I want curl and plump and length and I'm willing to throw a few more bucks in the kitty to achieve it. I'm just wondering what all the fuss is about or if I have some sort of bum lashes?
I've always had better luck with the comparatively priced Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara or L'Oreal Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara. They just work a lot better to me but they never get the accolades Great Lash does.
What Mascara is your favorite DD? Am I completly off the mark with Great Lash or is it just smoke and mirrors?

As soon as I got a job that paid just enough where I could buy something for a few dollars more and worked much much better, I have never gone back to Maybelline. I agree with the other reviewers, thumb down, don't waste your $$$

i agree that this mascara is only pretty good. but it's cheap, easy and doesn't irritate my eyes, so it's what i always use. however, if possible i would always use diorshow.
Meg, thank you for pointing out that the emperor has no clothes on! It kills me when I see makeup artists whip out this pink and green tube. I just never saw anything special in it. For drugstore mascaras, I'd go with Max Factor any day. But I'm more likely to go to Sephora and get my Korres mascara.

I think I can shed some light on this issue. First off let me say that NO...I do notlike this mascara and it does absolutely nothing for me. But my BFF Jen swears by itand its all she's ever used. Every makeup artist we had for our weddings does too.And I think this is why...for Jen, she's go super long and thick lashes. CG tends tobe on the watery side (I think) and it gives her a light coat and the tiny brush combsher lashes making them look polished but not over done. She's also my friend with theAngelina Jolie lips so if she played up her huge eyes and her huge lips (I'm not beingjealous when I say huge...I wish I had either one of them) it would be too much. Makeupartists seem to like it because its a simple application that can work adequately onjust about anyone but doesn't overwhelm. Personally I don't get the hype and it mustbe marketing. I want FULL, LONG, LUSH, BIG FAT lashes. I want it all so this isn't for me. I must say though that for a DD...Loreals Voluminous always comes back as myfave. Loves!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
I completely concur....and I'm a freelance makeup artist. I have tried using this on myself and am constantly wondering, "Where are my eyes? Why do my lashes look like stiff spikes?" But, alas, I'm a blonde haired, blue eyed gal with blonde lashes. Without any mascara, people sometimes ask what college I attend (I think they really need their vision checked, but heck I'll take what I can get!). So I am a huge fan of L'Oreal Voluminous--length, volume, plush lashes...what more can a girl ask for. But as Sweetassgal mentioned I think a lot of other makeup artists use this on women with wonderfully full, long lashes. When I've used it on clients, I put some of the mascara on a fan brush and then apply for a "natural" look. I do carry a tube in my kit and women always exclaim with such exuberance over how much they love Great Lash. It always shocks me. But that's marketing for you!
I totally agree, Great Lash is the most overrated mascara ever. I got a tube once as part of a promotion, and I was actually curious to try it because of all the hype. It did color my lashes black (the absolute bare minimum a mascara should do!) but it also made them feel dry and brittle, and it flaked horribly. I think I only used it once or twice, then I tossed it in the trash and never looked back.
I concur with the first two reviews.....nothin' to write home about there.Actually, the fumes from it bother my eyes so I dont even "go there".
i hate great lash. if i had to purchase a drugstore mascara it would definitely be Loreal's Voluminous Mascara. great lash, in my opinion is basically just black spit. it does nothing for me at all. it gets hype, i purchase it, i hate it and it gets more hype. *shrugs* oh well.
Amen, sistas!! I thought that something was wrong w/ me for not "getting it"! I have done just as Karinakarina & gone back & bought it again years later only to find out that I was right the first time - nothing special!! I do have to say that Covergirl Lash Exact & Lash Blasts are my faves! The Lash Exact is the only one that I have actually bought again & again! That's saying A LOT!!
Bum lashes? Very funny Meg! You're totally right though... I think it's a classic case of marketing marketing marketing -- otherwise Maybelline would have changed their packaging by now. Great Lash Mascara is all about nostalgia and frankly the stuff in the tube is probably the same formula that they put in nine other products. I think that mascara is like the shampoo aisle -- the packaging and sales pitch is always changing and as a result I find myself always trying a new brand or occasionally buying a nostalgic one thinking that my hair, eyelashes or whatever is going to experience some kind of dramatic overhaul. I find myself in that one long aisle at CVS or RiteAid looking at a long line of shiny plastic bottles that all have the words "NEW" and "IMPROVED" on them in some configuration and I get suckered half the time thinking "maybe this time I'll try something different...?" The other half of the time I go into CVS or RiteAid and end up buying some brand that I used once in the past thinking (nostagically) ..."maybe I didn't really appreciate that Infusium 23 / Aussie / Pantene / Suave (whatever) as much as I should have?" I feel this same way about mascaras - they fall into that category of products that are always packaged with the words "NEW" and "IMPROVED" in front of a bunch of new-fangled formula additions and strange new vocabulary words. Over time, I rarely have gone back and bought the same mascara because by the time I need a new one, I'm ready to try a new one to see if it will work better / stay put / volumize / lengthen / thicken / not-clump etc. And why isn't there an "everything mascara"? The drugstore brands seems to offer EITHER volume OR lengthening -- why can't it be both at the same time??? I mean, come on!!! I want furry caterpillars on my eyes people!!!!So as a result, most everyone has actually tried every single brand out there at least once - Maybelline, Max Factor, L'Oreal, Almay, Lancome, Clinique, Mac etc. etc. My latest experiment and $8 dollar investment for own bum eyelashes has been Max Factor's Volume Couture - which have been using for the last two months. Their packaging and sales pitch is that the wand is outside of the tube of mascara when you buy so that you can see the yellow / red / blue plastic nubby applicator thingys on the wand and decide if that's the one you want. It was marked as Max Factor's NEWEST FORMULA and NEW WAND APPLICATOR... so naturally, I had to try it!
I am with you on the Great Lash, you would get the same effect if you dipped the brush into liquid eyeliner. I have naturally long lashes (the only good thing I come by naturally) but I have yet to find a mascara that thickens, darkens, and does not smudge. If it is waterproof it clumps and if it doesn't clump it wipes right off, of course that may just be me. When I do use mascara I end up putting it on, then using my eyebrow comb to comb through and separate the lashes till, in the end, it looks like I never put it on.
GL is beloved of professional makeup artists because their work need only stay for the duration of a photo shoot. For those of us who need mascara to last an entire day, it is a steaming pile of ...bad eyemakeup. It was Tammy Fay's favorite brand. If that's the look you're looking for, knock yourself out.
well i have eyelash extensions which i love love love! you don't wewar mascara at all. i am sure they are trashing my real lashes as we speak but for now i am loving them. when i did wear mascara i always went back to lancome. i would read how this would win best mascara everytime and i just didn't get it. so if you wear mascara i vote for lancome.carol b
not for me.too much hype, I don't get it.I am lucky to have long lashes, but it is volume I lack and maybelline does not give me any.But I am always surprised that maybelline is the editor's fave in every magazine.I much prefer l'oreal voluminous mascara from the drugstore brands.
I hate this stuff!!! Agreed that "2000 Calorie" works great in a pinch without the nail polish-remover scent!
This mascara is the MOST OVERRATED MASCARA on the market! Not only is is very irritating, but if you have sensitive eyes, it is a big no-no. As a make-up artist, I never recommend it. You have to put layer after layer on to see any real results and then it just looks clumpy and spidery. I recommend Almay, Neutrogena or L'Oreal Voluminous(drugstore brands) and Benefit Bad Gal lash or Lancome mascaras(prestige brands).
I always wondered what all the "fuss" was about this less than mediocre mascara. I tried it, and tried it again and each time was completely disappointed. It would never stay on my lashes, it would leak its way onto my eye lids! Not a cute look! Like Meg, I find better results using other brands in the same price range. karinakarina- I'm liking the newest Couture Mascara from Max Factor- and I totally agree with you - why isn't there a do EVERYTHING mascara out there??!!! My quest for the best mascara continues...
I always thought that I was a freak for hating this stuff. Glad to see that I am not alone. This mascara is always clumping and flaking on me. And it is incredibly irritating to my eyes. I would never recommend it to anyone!
Its definitely all hype, for years we were all reading about great lash mascara, how all the supermodels love it ,its a beauty staple, blah ,blah, well when it first arrived in Ireland my friends and I got all excited rushed out and bulk bought it,cos of all the hype it was selling out like crazy, like it was the holy grail of mascara, anyway I was expecting great things, not so much,Ithink the brush is too puny or something but it gives my lashes no volume at all and it smudges on me too anyway long story short,I used it grand total of 3 times and no more,Ilike the urban decay big fatty mascara because the massive brush really thickens my lashes with one coat.

This is personally my holy grail mascara. I know I'm in the minority here, but I can't live without this stuff. No matter how many love affairs I have with expensive mascaras and other cheap mascaras, I still come running home to this mascara. I like this mascara because you can achieve different effects with it, it's cheap, and the tube is cute. This mascara can be a little overwhelming at first, especially if it is a brand new tube. The biggest key to this mascara is amount of product. If you have too much product on the wand then your lashes will end up clumped up in a not so attractive way. So what I do is gently wipe some of the excess mascara off onto a tissue, which leaves just the right amount of product on the wand. A coat or two provides well defined natural looking lashes, but a few more coats and you are looking like a glamazon. I can definitely see why this is a makeup artist must have. This product is richly pigmented, and you can layer it for different effects. It is a little harder to apply then some mascaras, but applied right this mascara will make your eyes sparkle like diamonds!
I absolutely hate this stuff. It is way too thick and clumpy, offers no definition or separating, and it flakes and smudges like nobody's business. This was the first mascara I ever used at age 12 and I hated it then just as much as I do now.
i always find this mascara being talked about in some magazine or beauty article. people always rave about how wonderful this product is and how it is every make up artist's secret weapon. well i think it's all a conspiracy. this mascara was sufficient when i was all of the age of 14, but when it comes down to it, this mascara is absolutely not sufficient in any way shape or form.
Hm, I totally agree. This mascara does absolutely nothing for me. They're not longer or thicker and I always lose my curl when I apply this after curling my lashes. Definitely not the mascara for me!
This has never worked for me! Not in HS not last year when I tried to give it another chance! It's clumpy and messy! I don't know how it keeps getting voted the best drugstore mascara in ALLURE every year?! Yeah it's cheap, but hey this is the one time when you get what you pay for! :(

I don't think it's THAT bad, but definitely not deserving of all the hype. At least it's dying down. Isn't annoying how a lot of cult faves just never change?
I don't know why this got such a huge hype over the years. It just never worked for me.
I used to use this all the time, and then one day realized it wasn't all that. That there are many as good or most times better ones. So, since I love to try new things, I hop around. But, apparently I am weird, that overall, I have liked most mascaras I have tried. I just opened a sample tube of Blinc Tube Mascara, and am not sure about that yet. That was my first experience with tubes. And xemailheather, I have wondered about that myself. I think a lot of people buy things named "cult" faves and then feel like they have to just keep giving it a good rating? Or something? I personally love to see new "cult" faves.
I hate this mascara. It has never worked for me or anyone I know personally. I really don't know why there's so much hype surrounding it..
This mascara is totally overrated. Tried it back in high school, and never touched it since. Since then, I've tried plenty of other great mascaras and could never understand why this mascara is constantly receiving awards from magazines!

this mascara is nothing compared to what people say about it. it does nothing for my lashes, just makes them look like sticks that are black. it is just some cheap mascara and i never use it, besides, its only cheap if you use it! i basically threw away 5 dollars for this mascara. i regret buying this, especially since i am so picky with mascaras.. i should have known it was just the hype...
For some reason this is the only mascara my MomMom uses. She swears it is like a miracle mascara although she also swears the formula has changed and the product isn't as good as it used to be. That or her eyelashes are rejecting it. lol.
I will never, ever, understand the hype about this product! For years now, I try it, I hate it, or more accurately, am indifferent to it, and I toss it. Then I read another amazing review, more hype, and convince myself that I must have missed something the last time, so I buy it again, use it one time again, and toss it again. Either Great Lash has the best, most effective marketing team in the world, or I am somehow totally missing the mark on this one. As of this writing, I have probably purchased it over a dozen times, and never once been impressed. What am I missing?!
I only purchased it once just because of the "hype" about it. After the first use I had to completely reapply my makeup because something in the mascara texture/ingredients made my eyes water and itch like hell. I even had to take my contacts out and wait for a couple hours before I could actually "see" again. Horrible! I remember, just after applying (shortly before the watering eyes), it seemed to me simply as just another mascara, nothing special about it. It didn't lengthen or thicken in any way, I just remember the strange smell.

yeah i dont like this one at all, made my lashes all thin brittle and spidery, yuck.. i also prefer Max Factor 2000 Calorie Mascara for my drugstore deal, works great for me :)
makeup makeup makeup!!!!!!!
This is not my favorite mascara. I think mascaras have come a LONG way since this first became available. I know that this is a nostalgic mascara, but that is really all it is.
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

This was the first mascara I started with so I thought it was great at the time because I had nothing to compare it to. Now I use Loreal Voluminous and THAT is HG for me. Great Lash doesn't even compare.
This mascara was the first I ever used. I chose it over others at the time because of all the raves. I have to agree-- it's just okay & definitely doesn't live up to the hype.
I love this mascara. I have very long, curly eyelashes and this is the only one that works best for me. It is on sale at my dominicks now for $2.50. I bought 5. Just in case.
Wow I'm really surprised at all the bad reviews on this product! I personally do not use this now but I have in the past and I really liked it. Of course it wasn't the best, but for the price it was perfect and the waterproof version was actually waterproof.
This mascara is very average for an average price.
i wasn't that impressed by this one. expected a lot more than "distinctly average" after hearing such great reviews. :(
i think their is lot of publicity on this mascara i like just the package !!!
this formulation may have changed since i used it a few years ago but this mascara is honestly the worst mascara i have ever used and i have used many. The main problem that i had with this was from the minute it was applied until i took it off, this mascara flaked sooo bad. I wear contacts so flaking and mascara are a huge no no.
i'm currently using lash stiletto and that is notorious for flaking. I hate this mascara and i refuse to open any of my 5 unopened mascaras. to replace this. I was looking for a reason (please flake) to ditch this but a month in, that baby is still going strong. Sob.
I bought this mascara and tried it because it was cheap. I did not like it because it dries out really quickly.
This mascara was terrible on me! It was so heavy and it liked to vacate my lashes and migrate to my eyelids. I have no idea what was up with that. And the color is ungodly black, just looks fake. I wouldn't recommend this mascara to anyone.
*shudders* I HATE this mascara. It is so flaky and it makes your eyes red and irritated... not to mention the raccoon eyes you get in the middle of the day. Plus this mascara tends to make my eye lashes fall out :-|.. so much for making me look like if i have more eyelashes huh ? I just tossed it.. it was so nasty. No one i know actually likes it.. everyone bought it for the hype surrounding it but ending up tossing it in the end.
I have this in the waterproof version but over the years I have bought this once or twice trying to understand all the hype around it. I love mascara and usually always have at least 5 tubes in my rotation. I don't think this mascara is all it's cracked up to be, I really don't understand why women go so crazy for it?
This is my personal favorite mascara. I use this daily. Every time I purchase new mascara I end up going back to Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara. It gets the job done. Although I would like this mascara to give my lashes length and volume...it's great for an everyday look :)
Maybelline Great Lash mascara is the most overrated mascara. I can't belive that it is claimed to be the best selling mascara and editor's picks. It does nothing for my lashes. The formula is very wet. I doesn't make my lashes longer or fuller. It makes your lashes stick together. But the absolute worst thing about this mascara is that it's so hard to wash off.
For drugstore mascaras I prefer 2000 Calorie or Full n Soft. GL I abhor. I've tried it not once but twice and cannot stand it. It does nothing for my lashes at all..it's incredibly wet and doesn't define them--it actually makes them stick together, smear and provides zero lengthening or volumizing (and while my lashes aren't super lush and long naturally, they're definitely pretty decent to start.)I am so relieved and pleasantly surprised that you smart ladies agree!
