YSL GLOSS PUR BLACK! XSTATIC XPLORES THE XOTIC!
Xstatic817 here, and I’m afraid this review will have to be my swan song - at least for the time being. Sadly, I’ve been overcome with work pressures, school pressures, home-buying pressures, crappy-economy pressures, and, well, I think you get the drift. I’ll try to check in every now and again when I unearth a new treasured find. I hope to be back in the spring with my masters degree, a house, and considerably more free time.
But on to the makeup!
So I have been dying for a black gloss every since I realized that this would be fall’s next-big-thing. Maybe its my obsession with Halloween (I’m going as Alice this year, of Wonderland descent), or perhaps some deep-seated regret for never going all-out with the goth look when I had the chance. In any case, I needed me some black gloss.
I missed out on this gloss when it was first offered as a limited edition at the end of August, but lo and behold, it made a second appearance on YSL’s website a few weeks back and as far as I can tell, its still in stock, still limited edition. It’s the first release of a new gloss formulation for Yves Saint Laurent that will launch in Spring 2009 and promise to be “full of pure color and high shine.”
But what does one do with black lip gloss?
Well, when worn alone, it definitely has a high-fashion, NSFW-or-really-anywhere vibe to it. And yet its awesome. There’s something about wearing black gloss that makes you feel instantly cooler, hipper even if your husband requests you remove it “this instant” the same way your mother did when your 12-year-old self pranced downstairs with lipstick on for the first day of 6th grade. Ok, so it can’t really be worn alone unless you’ve got major cajones.
So today I took the advice of makeup artists everywhere and decided to blend, blend, BLEND. I first applied a very light coat to my bottom lip and then put Bobbi Brown’s Black Mauve lip gloss on my top lip and smushed around. Alone, black mauve has its own quietly goth thing going on - a little bit purple, a little bit gray and disturbingly pretty on. The YSL gloss added more depth - obviously - and added more of a brown tone. I definitely think this would make a nice winter lip color. Then I tried another thin coat atop MAC Desire lipstick, which is a dark plum to begin with. This made a divine berry-eggplant color that I think fits perfectly with the dark fall lip trend we’re seeing. I even wore this out to the grocery store. I’m sure there are numerous color combinations out there and if you’re adventurous and like to experiment, you’ll have a lot of fun with this lip gloss.
The gloss itself has good lasting power, is not overly sticky, and has that tropical fruit smell of all YSL lip products. On the lips, it felt very much like YSL’s Golden Gloss - minus the bit of grit.
Here are the gory details from the YSL website: “A cosmetic jewel that turns lips into a spectacular fashion statement. Mysterious, sensual, luminous... For fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, black is THE color. And as a make-up artist, lips are THE focus. YSL GLOSS PUR Black unites these two facets of his art in a superb Limited Edition. From plum to ebony, it dresses lips in an infinite range of shades, depending on how it is applied - feather light or rich and bold. Transparent yet intense, it plays on the depths of black and the pure shine of a sparkle-free formula.”
Has anyone else tried this product? Or maybe you too have bought an outrageous, completely frivolous beauty item that you knew you’d hardly use ?

Wishing you all things wonderful and hope you'll be back soon!Well...I bought the dark-chocolate brown lipgloss from MAC and honestly,am dying for the sweltering South Texas heat to subside so I can wallow in a bit, just a bit of gothy-glam,LOL! I think it's fun to color outside the lines and that includes on my face sometimes, thanks so much for your inspirations girl!
I can definitely testify that black lipstick- glossy or not - doesn’t do a thing for women over 50! Let me tell you what it does for an older person’s complexion...have you heard the term ‘sallow’? Are you getting a visual? Seven words ahead: not flattering shade for most older women! My thought about this lipstick is this - it would be a great ‘get out of work’ card for an older woman. Don’t put on any make-up at all except for this black lipstick and show up for your daily grind. Don’t say a word until somebody says to you...”Are you feeling alright?” and at that moment just part your black shiny lips enough to emit a small sigh and I just bet somebody will suggest you go back home and get some rest! But I’m sure on a younger woman - some intrigue would definitely come into play - although I have to wonder how many men are on the lookout for women who wear black lipstick. I guess blending is the key here. Xcstatic you will be missed - return to us soon!
Jeanasina!
When I first heard of this product I thought, wow, it must be a really nice mascara or possibly liquid eye liner? Then I read that it was a lip gloss! Unless you're goth, or going to a Halloween party as Broomhilda, I would definitely pass on this one. The Wet&Wild suggestion looks equally effective, why waste your money?!
OK, if you MUST have black lipgloss, Wet & Wild puts it out annually in their Halloween cosmetics display. For two bucks. Which is all you need to spending on something this ridiculous, in my humble opinion. If you need to be mixing it with other colors to make it wearable, that is too damn much work.
We will miss you but GOOD LUCK and I hope to see you back some day soon! Take careand best to you in your home/school/financial endeavors! You will be missed!!!!
Love, hugs and shoes...Angie
Black lipgloss, while looking great on the runway, would be harder to wear in normal situations. I think you could make it look glam, or that paired with the wrong apparel and makeup could make a woman look like a ghoul, a vampire, or many other things. For the right pictures or other occassions it could be pulled off though. When I was younger I bought a set of lipsticks, horrible lipsticks. There was a orange lipstick, a green lipstick, a purple lipstick, and a pink lipstick. The pink lipstick wasn't that bad. The orange and the purple lipsticks weren't that bad either, they were actually fairly wearable shades. But the green lipstick was disgusting. The actual quality of the lipstick was good, and it even tasted good. I think I was in the 5th or 6th grade, and I was really trying to stand out and be an individual. I wore this green lipstick quite often to school. I can only imagine what people must have thought of my green lips. It was kind of a transparent forest green color. But it was pigmented enough to give my lips a healthy dose of green. I probably looked like a ghoul. I thought I looked good. Keep in mind that I was really into fashion and makeup. And I would see crazy makeup colors in my favorite magazines. So I figure it would be alright to wear to school. Needless to say this is before I realized that a lot of runway and magazine looks aren't wearable for everyday occassions. I probably looked like an absolute retard. Looking back on this, I really regret the green lipstick.
I don't know about black lip gloss... maybe for Halloween.
i am too much into girlie colors to even try this one!
i read about this after seeing it on the runways - maybe if you mix it with something itll make cute colors?

I think this would be great to darken your bright lip colors. Not really something to wear on its own.
Reds like MAC Red or something would probably become the most perfect dark blood red, I guess.
Hmmm... Black gloss? I would look awkward wearing this. Maybe you have the looks that could pull it off, but this is TOO dark for me. It's actually kind of cool that they make high end black gloss. The more I think about it....maybe I might give it a whirl. I would have to borrow it though...couldn't bring myself to buy it. :-)
A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.

This totally reminds me of this one time my senior year in high school. My girls and I were being totally goofy and bought a tube of Black Wet 'N' Wild lip gloss at the grocery store. Then we all put it on and went to one girl's house and tried as hard as we could to keep straight faces while we talked to her dad and then erupted in laughter when he quickly asked us what the hell was on our faces. We thought black lip gloss was sooo absurd, but couldn't resist spending $1 on the joke. I still think black lip gloss is ABSURD.
Love and Lipgloss,

Maybe it works better the way Xstatic used it by blending it with another color.I love nude and pink lips so I don't think black has any room in makeup case. :-)
I LOVE YSL! Im such a brand name whoooore!
i havent tried it but i think it'll look great with other colors
looool i couldn't never wear that or just for a party ...
This is on beauty ticket right now for $14 for anyone interested!!!
MAC's new line reminded me of this. Maybe it could be layered over bright lipsticks to give a deep colour? That could be nice, like those old Revlon glosses that had black shimmer in them. So I think this gloss could have its uses, but some of the new black MAC stuff, like matte black lipstick, I'm not sure how many people would be interested in that.
Four words: Eighth grade Halloween PartyA few more: Never again.

Do you think that people with acne can pull off dramatic make-up? I don't know if I should try.
I really don't understand the black lip trend. I know quite a few of the lines now sell black lip gloss and lipstick but I've never seen anyone wearing it. Im my opinion it's just not a flattering look.

thats sooo cool but i dont think i could pull it off : / maybe a purple but def not a brown black that u said
If i were going to a fall fashion event at night this would be thegloss for me. I am in all seriousness going to think about trying this.maybe not such an expensive brand because i would rarely use it. I dogravitate toawards intense colours. Dragon by Chanel is amazing <3

I don't think this would be very flattering at all. Not for me anyway.
Love this concept but know this would simply look awful on my ultra pale skin.
I'm very sorry but really, who would wear this as a daily product? When I was looking in the lip section and saw this, I said to myself :Oh! What's a mascara doing here? lol :)
I'm so glad that you reviewed this! I almost bought today (online), but decided against it. I think it is too trendy for me... but on the right person it would look great, especially over red lips.
i would look horrible!

This is way too daring for me! Don't think anyone should ever wear black makeup except for smokey eyes!

I am sure there are ladies out there who could make this work, but am I the only one who hears the Adams Family theme song when I think of this product? That being said, I do wish I could see this on some people. I am very curious. I am sure it wouldn't look good with just anyone's coloring.
I wouldn't buy this for anything! Black lipstick?! How unatractive!
I actually love black lipstick! Apart from making my teeth look a bit more yellow than usual (I'm english, hence bad teeth :P) i think it's really quite flattering with my super-pale skin. I also think there's something rather glamourous and chic about it, as well as being mysterious and a bit 'rock'y. While it certainly isn't an everyday look or me from time to time it's really fun to play with.
maybe for halloween.. but deff not for everday use
I'm really kicking myself for not buying a black gloss when that whole trend was happening, but I figure I can buy one and still try to rock it :P
I'm not sure about this color! It's too extreme for me.
I dont think i could pull this off!
I couldn't wear this either lol.
Couldn't resist the Limited Edition status and still fancy myself a little outside the box so...picked this up on eBay today. I'm a schoolteacher and can't wait to get the yay or nay from my veeery honest highschoolers. I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl!OK..it arrived yesterday and I wore it today on top of LipFusion pencil in Flush. Just one drop on lower lip, blended with my pinkie, left a beautiful, dark plum shiny stain that has lasted all day. I love it!
i love this
Wow the bottle looks great!
I wish I could wear dark colors like this but I feel I am too fair and would just look wannabe goth :(
