NEW OBSESSION! URBAN DECAY LIPSTICKS! SATURDAY AT SEPHORA AND XOTIC COMBINED!

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 1:56pm
  • Lips

Hello, Katie here, your Sephora insider guru! It was about time. It has been probably six months or so since I've had a new fix. (Fix: discovery of a new product that, as it turns out, I absolutely cannot live without!) Most recently, I think it was the Alexandra de Markoff Fresh Eye Cream Plus illuminator/highlighter/concealer/brightener wonder potion. A more affordable version of the YSL Touche Eclat...which any further away than 8 inches, (close enough to read the writing), you can't even tell is NOT the $40 Touche Eclat.

Urban Decay is already on the upper echelon of my favorite products ever list with the Primer Potion. Honestly, I don't konw how you could live without it. Honestly. And I used to really like the Ultraglide Lipglosses for their consistancy and color choices. Except the tubes were prone to burst. And now sephora only carries four shades when there used to be 10. But with their new LIPSTICKS, (not that my faith was shaken...it wasnt) my faith is exponentially increased!

They are SOOOOOOOOO Pretty! Every single color is wearable. They smell good, they aren't sticky and grainy! I think that wearability of the colors is a big plus though. Take NARS, for example, which I love, and they have about 80 million different lipstick shades but they just are so unwearable. I have about 4 or 5 that actually look good on me. But I'm pretty sure I could pull off every single one of them. I have Gravity, a rich red, full coverage semi-matte. It is my official segue into the dark lip trend this fall, and perhaps will henceforth be known as Katie's Official Red Lip color of choice. I also got Tease, a pinky coral which is right in like with my normal daytime colors.

Except for that crazy little plastic dagger which pokes you and often literally draws blood when you touch the tube - the Urban Decay Lipsticks are super f!resh for fall!

Xstatic817 here, and I'm chiming in about these lipsticks as well! They're that good! Today I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of a “look” and -- taking it a step further -- the idea of labels and even identity. Now I’m not going to get too metaphysical for everyone on a Sunday -- of a 3 day weekend no less -- but recently I’ve been thinking a lot about my “look” and what it is.

I’ve found that thinking about what I’m trying to portray to the world makes it a whole lot easier to both get dressed in the morning and put on my makeup. I’m certainly not saying that you need to define yourself and stay within that little box forever. I’ll change my look daily, depending on my mood. Glam. Sophisticated. Earthy. Nude (ok, that one is just for makeup). Hippie. Trendy. Boho and on and on and on. But when I actually pose the question to myself, “Who do I want to be today?” it makes it kinda more fun to get ready for my day (or night).

I’ve come to the conclusion, though, that unlike the Osmonds, I’m neither a little bit country, nor a little but rock n’ roll, but I am, however, a little bit rockabilly and a little bit goth chick. Ok, probably more like four parts rockabilly and one part goth chick. It’s how I feel most comfortable and also it’s the look that I have the most fun with. So generally I’m both made up and dressed with a bit of a vintage 40s-50s feel sprinkled with a dash of Hot Topic.

Which is why the new lipsticks by Urban Decay had me at their sword hilt. I’m a total sucker for packaging. My husband always tells me I’m a marketer’s dream. But I have to give credit where credit is due, and these purple metal tubes with a dagger at the end satisfy my need for a little goth edge and are just plain FUN. And isn’t that what makeup is supposed to be about? If it’s a pain to “put on our faces” (as my Grandma used to say), then we’re doing something wrong. Also, it smells delicious. At first I couldn’t place the scent...sugary...cakey...but apparently its crème-caramel. Bonus point number two for Urban Decay!

OH, the actual product, you want to know about too. Well, it also rocks. I have it in two colors: Vinyl (plum semi-sheer sheen) and 5150 (deep coral semi sheer shimmer). Now for two supposedly sheer colors, I get great color payout from them, pigmented but not too stain-y and the color lasts long as well. I’m in love with 5150 which for me shows up more red than coral, perfect for my inner pin-up girl. I think Vinyl with its purpley tinge will be great for fall. (Sidenote: Anyone else absolutely loving the dark lip colors coming our way? I’m dying for a black lip gloss). The texture is absolutely divine; it almost has a balm like quality and makes your lips just feel healthier, which makes sense, considering the ingredients. I’m hooked, and I have to confess to you, I’m a lip gloss gal. I really don’t do lipsticks all that much because I just hate the way they feel on my lips. But not this one. I’m all set to test out all the colors on my next Sephora run; I may even swatch all the way up to my elbow!

thanks for the good reviews guys! My favorite shade is Jilted. Back in the old UD days, I used to wear Hammersmith...which was something similar to Cherries in the Snow back in my high school days. It's a jolt of hot pink and looks amazing with all the bright fun purple out this season. The packaging was our favorite part. Love it, or hate it...you are all talking about it! So we've done something right. Urban Decay is beauty with an edge...and all our products are feminine, dangerous and fun. So you're just letting us know we are doing our job!

I was devastated--devastated, I tell you!--when Urban Decay discontinued their lipstick line a few years back. So I was beyond thrilled to see it reinstated. And then I was beyond disappointed to see that the same crackhead who designed their Primer Potion bottle (wherein more than half the product is inaccessible to the applicator unless you cut the damn bottle open with your husband's band saw that he didn't know you'd be cutting open bottles of makeup with, not that that's what happened or anything) decided to put a finger-butchering DAGGER HANDLE at the end of the case. Seriously, it hurts to open your frickin' lipstick. This is crazy-awful packaging for a relatively nice product. I returned it to Sephora. The lady there told me she'd had lots of complaints about it, and apparently UD may offer some other case option in future. I think they ought to fire their packaging designer.

I have to laugh at the irony here...I've been reviewing and promoting natural products, and recently decided to give up full coverage lipsticks in favor of glosses because they have been settling into tiny little lines bleeding aroundmy lips and making my thin lips look even smaller. Then Meg sends me this rockin'little lipstick from Urban Decay (by FAR my fav eyeshadow brand) and I'm back tomy old ways. The ironic part you ask? My color I received was SELLOUT! Howcrazy is that?!?! Even more crazy is the fact that I LOVE the color (a warm cinnamonopaque brown) that looks just perfect for easing into fall but doesn't run the DARKblacks and deep reds I know I can't pull off, I LOVE the scent...soft and sweet andright up my alley (I hate lipsticks that stink...COME ON...they're just gross), andthis opaque color doesn't end up running through my lips creases like George Clooney froma commitment! I think the packaging is divine...edgy and keeps me feeling like Ican still connect with the young girl that will always be inside me and I don't evenmind the little dagger. But I don't throw this beauty in my purse to be jabbed later. It sits on top of my vanity...protecting and defending the rest of my beauty prizesfrom the ravages of a teenage daughter and much younger sister. Who (BTW) boughtme the Urban Decay VAULT for my BDAY! YES!!! I LOVE IT. She ran all over Sacramentotrying to find it and eventually found it at Macy's. Apparently Sephora and Ultadon't carry it...quel surprise there because its a HOT item! Thanks baby sister...I love ya more than my luggage! Rock on Urban Decay!

Love, hugs and shoes...Angie

I tried out the shade (and attitude) called "Wicked". Being the big winner that I am (that's WINNER), I also got the matching lip liner. I'm not normally a liner person, but this one kind of needed it. The shade is a pinkish nude with cool undertones. All I can say is meh. The color was meh. The coverage was less than meh. The formula dried out my lips a bit. The Excalibur packaging is clunky, heavy and a bit dangerous when you are diving into your purse for the hilt of a dagger. Unless you are the kind of person that obsessively reapplies your lip color, or finds yourself in lipstick fencing bouts, save yourself a few bucks and get something that doesn't say "My name is Elvira, you killed my father, prepare to die."

I loooooove these. I got mine in Gash, which is the prettiest deep blood red. Confession time: I only own three lipsticks- two are dark red (including Gash) and one is a creamy pink. Now, I'm not a fan of dark lipsticks, since I live in the tropics, but this is the perfect shade for doing with a subtle smoky eye. I tried it out today for my fall Chamber Singer's concert (black dress, smoky eye, glam waves, and RED LIPS = total win), and my god was it hot. I layered over it the XXX Shine Lip Gloss in Quickie (which is a nice cherry red) and it made this gorgeous, GORGEOUS vinyl, china-doll painted lips like shade. I'm saving up a bit to get this in a few more shades! It lasted all through the concert (quite the miracle) and it had great color payoff. I totally agree about the NARS thing though. I got a NARS lipstick in Fire Down Below, and the ONLY time I can wear it is on stage because it's just so dark. With this, I can apply a bit with a lip brush and layer a light gloss over it, and it allows me a more subtle look for a night out. I love the packaging, too! My only complaint is that for some reason, Gash seems to be a liiiittle more drying than the other shades I tried at my local Sephora, but it is definitely going on my "must have" list for fall!

I have been loving my UD Lipstick in "Hotpants." Yes, I feel pretty dang hot while wearing this beautiful medium pink lipstick. I adore the formula and the color and consistency is perfect! My only complaint is with the container, the dagger is difficult to grasp. But all things considered, a wonderful lipstick. Highly recommended!

So, first of all, really like this lipstick, really like the case it comes in...it makes me feel all fancy. The only thing I would say that is tricky with it is that the color on the stick looks really different on your lips. My lipstick looks like it should be really pink, but when I put it on, it looks terrific- it's magic or something...I also like the texture of the lipstick- not to creamy or greasy...all in all, great pick!

I love love love their lipsticks I never know what color to get! I want them all! also not related to lipstick but the urban decay eyeshadow primer potion is da bomb!!!!! i was always hesitant to get the primer b/c i just thought its selling b/c of its cute little bottle look, and not the product it self, till i was watching a tutorial on how to apply eyeshadow to get a certain look and all she used was the primer potion. So i decided to get it and i wish I would of gotten it sooner! its great leaves no crease and its super smooth!

Ooohhhh....SO glad to see this review!!! These lipsticks ROCK in color selection, texture, and packaging! I have"Wanted" which is a semi-sheer deep berry that I can actually apply without a brush and liner (yes,I wear lipstickto the gym,LOL!) and it looks great alone! The lil' dagger makes me feel like Angelina in the movie of thesame name too,LOL! I too am in LOVE with all the dark colors, they were a mainstay in my arsenal for years and MAC does have the perfectblack lip gloss BTW,I just got a really deep chocolate brown one to layer on to of my "Wanted" when I want toglam it up even more.UD lipsticks and so many of their products continue to set the standard for "I wanna' be a rocker-chic" glam and Ilove this company!

I LOVE this lipstick. The texture is perfect, creamy but light, not at all grainy and doesn't clump up or get chalky. I got the color "PEROXIDE" (in honor of what I do to my hair perhaps), which is a pinky color with a hint of nude. I thought it would be a little too light or frosted for me, but it is actually a very beautiful color that I think would flatter most skin tones. And the packaging is awesome!

I also received in the mail this lipstick from Meg that without question had the “absolutely fabulous” lipstick category nailed! It was with sincere admiration that I blurted out ‘WOW!’ when I pulled it out of the mail pouch before I even opened it up to see what color it was! It was a purple haze I fell into while admiring the packaging of this great product! Let’s talk first impressions here - we all know when somebody says “Nice Package!” a definite positive visual comes to mind along with an eyebrow raising smile! LOL!! Well I’m here to tell you that this lipstick comes in its own fantastic NICE PACKAGE that you will admire every time you go to apply your new lipstick!! We are talking - glitz and a touch of Goth meets shazam!!! in the detailing. The lipstick comes in a weighty, PURPLE metal tube and (here’s the best part) the bottom of the tube is imbedded with a mini gunmetal dagger! Ladies! This lipstick says “I am fierce and DO NOT EVER ATTEMPT TO MESS WITH ME!” I love the container! You hold on to the sword to pull the magical cap off of the actual lipstick! The cap is clear and decorated inside and out with two-toned purple splashes. Every time I took it out my girlfriends would say “Ohhhhh - let me see that!” Now let’s talk about what is on the inside of this eye-catching tube...of course you will slowly advance the lipstick just about all the way up to see the color and when you do...you will see that the words “urban decay” are imprinted on the actual lipstick! How on earth do they do that? Don’t try this at home ladies! Even though it might be really cool to see your own name etched in the lipstick too - I’m thinking using a safety pin or a nail really won’t provide the quality of etching you see in the original logo. Leave this imprinting to the pros. It’s really an elegant touch! So...when you get past the ‘how did they do that?’ segment you will definitely want to begin the luxurious process of getting this new lipstick on your lips! First impressions...dreamy, creamy, smooth, moisturizing, and no yucky taste! I loved the way it just glides over your lips. The color I received was called “love child” and I can tell you this shade is a ‘light and cool’ young shade of pink. It’s too pink for me I look like one of the main characters in the old movie “What ever happened to Baby Jane?” in this particular shade but I use it with other colors to give my final lip shade a little extra something. It really feels nice on and my lips seem to stay more hydrated when I use it. Every girlfriend of mine who has snatched it out of my hand and immediately applied it to their own lips has had very positive reactions! They all love the creamy texture! The description says “The luxuriously creamy formula nourishes and protects lips with vitamins A, C and E. Hyaluronic Spheres (found naturally in the body) are added to stimulate cellular function, prevent dehydration, and fill-in lines and wrinkles-now, how many lipsticks can do that?!” It also goes on to say that the lipstick is infused with a decadent crème caramel scene and flavor. I can’t say that I really got the caramel smell or taste myself - but it really does feel GOOD! So ladies...the bottom line - I liked everything about this lipstick and would definitely like to try it in another color. Just listen to this line up of color names: Gash, Indecent, Requiem, Sellout, Vinyl, Jailbait, Peroxide, Revolution, Tease, Pistol...the list goes on. Intrigued? I checked out the entire website for Urban Decay and it’s definitely got its own spin on make-up product names! Who wouldn’t want to try “Big Fatty” mascara or look at all the colors in “The Eyeshadow Vault”?

Jeanasina!

I got Buzzkill in the mail. It is a beautiful dark rose. I am so in love with this lipstick. The packaging is devine. The ingredients are out of this world. The caramel scent is yummy. The color is just so flattering. It is not sticky or drying. It has a really nice texture. I am in love and will not hesitate to purchase this lipstick in the future.

OK, so I'm just now getting on the bandwagon... I love UD, but had not tried any of their lipsticks.  I'm mostly a gloss girl, but I'm flexible.  So I've got the dagger lipstick in Vinyl, and it is wonderful.  The dagger looks like something I'd poke myself with (I'm at that clumsy stage) - but so far, no injuries.  Vinyl looks good and feels even better.  My lips are happy, and if they're happy, I'm happy.  I like that this gives me some color but doesn't look all done up.  Ya know?

First of all the packaging -gorgeous.I got buzz kill(a dark rose) and vinyl(plum).I love the slightly pointed tip,it gives great precision,no need for lipliner. The dark rose shade buzz kill is lovely, especially when blotted down(like your own lips only better). The plum vinyl has a lovely shimmer and goes on a lot sheerer than in the tube, but I m a person dark shades dont suit so I thought how can I make this work for me.Then I rembered reading that in the movie the duchess the make up artist mixed a plum lipstick paw paw balm(like 8 hour cream) to achieve a natural look,so I broke out the lipbalm and mixed it with a tiny bit of vinyl on the back of my hand and the result was fabulous and it willlast for ages.

Aren't UD lipcolors are to die for?  I love them. Potionprincess, I have the vinyl too.  It's a little too dark purple for me, but I mix it will with a peachy color and it makes a really nice pinky purple color.   You should give it a try.  I feel like a chemist with my lip colors.  I am always mixing something up to come up with the right colors for that suit me.

I got this in Apocalypse which I bought on impulse last fall, being that I have had a thing for dark lipstick, since Vamp. Now, I have read that dark lipstick is aging, so I have toned it down some the past few years and have been more or less happy.

First, I love the packaging. And second, I love the lipstick! Apocalypse is dark, but, one coat, not so much. In fact it looks lovely. Two coats, not so much. But, the lipstick is great.

I can't believe that I never commented on this product... I have two, Hotpants and Lovechild.  I must say that I absolutely LOVE Lovechild!  It's the most beautiful color on my pale skin, and it's so creamy and slightly shiny.  Love it!  Hotpants, on the other hand, is not my favorite lipstick.  I find that the white glitter in is just too much.  The consistancy is a little off, and it's kind of matte.
