ALO SUN! HUMP DAY HAIR DAY!
Kate here with more tales from the Crypt of hair disasters and hair miracles. I am a girl. Well duh Kate you might be thinking to yourself. Obviously you are a girl...how else could you be so fabulous? And have breasts. Well actually as too many HBO specials have shown me, you don't necessarily have to be a girl to have breasts...but I digress. My point is that I am a girl and thus, like every other girl in the history of all time, I as a young impressionable youth used the o so notorious product "Sun In." Like most of you, I had dreams of transforming from a braces covered, giant un-plucked and/or completely shaved off eyebrows ridden, pale, frizzy haired horror of a teenager into a Britney Spears pre-shaved head/VMA meltdown blonde goddess with sun lightened highlights. And like most of you, my hair turned bright orange at the crown of my head and striped orange everywhere else. For this reason I was a little skeptical when I received alo sun's (lack of capitalization their's, not mine) "Lemon Lights", a product designed with basically the same intention of Sun-In, to lighten your hair using the sun's natural rays. Lucky for me, it does not use the same ingredients.
Here's what alo sun has to say about their product:
"Lightens hair naturally while you have fun in the sun. On the beach or on the street heightens highlights anywhere under the sun. Perfect for blondes, as well as all shades of lighter brunette."
I finally worked up the courage to use this product, convincing myself that my hair is so blonde anyways that it couldn't do much to hurt it. And I was right, however, it also didn't really do much of anything at all. I worked the product through my hair as instructed and allowed my hair to dry in the sun. I did not see much of a difference so I repeated the process. After the second time I went inside and washed my hair as it was now the consistency of play-do after being put through the play-do spaghetti maker. After drying my hair, I did feel my hair looked brighter and lighter...however this could also have been due to the fact that my hair was now clean and not polluted with a weeks worth of hairspray/dirt/spray tan/frosting (don't ask) etc etc. I have since used it again, and I do think that it does help my hair to stay light and not fade from the pretty white blonde I have when leaving the hairdressers to the horrid yellow, brassy blonde when I arrive again. But I could not with any confidence say how this product would affect those with darker hair. All in all, I would only recommend this product for those girls with light blonde hair who just want to keep their hair color fresh and bright in between hair colors (and to do that even better and without as much damage probably, a blue or purple shampoo works wonders).
I'm not even going to ask if there are any other Sun-In survivors out there so just go ahead and start spilling! Anyone else brave enough to give the idea another try?

I too had tried the 'sun-in' product years ago and was also very skeptical to try this new brand and version on my severely processed blond tresses...so instead....I had my boyfriend try it on his goatee! That’s right ladies...the product went on a Harley man goatee! My boyfriend’s goatee is somewhat white, somewhat reddish and somewhat kind of a blah dark color. I told my Harley man that maybe he could have his go-tee look the color of Kenny Rogers goatee or the cool solid mustache tone of Paul Teutul of Orange County Choppers. With that premise my Harley man said he was game to try it out! So as the directions stated he slathered his goatee up with the lightening product and away we went to walk hand in hand around the lake in 89 degree humid weather. I had on a sunhat and he had on his Alo Sun and we walked almost 2 miles in the blaring sunlight! When we got home, I took off my hat and my hair was completely stuck to my head because it was SO freakin’ humid and hot outside and my Harley man???? We took a good look in the mirror and decided he still had the same color mustache that he started with. Will he try it again...maybe - waste is a sin you know - so he just might use it up just to see...

Sun-In disaster story #1....I used Sun-In almost everyday the summer before my senior year of high school. I very quickly realized that my hair was an orange/neon yellow color and ran to Wal-Mart for a hair color to cover it up. It worked...no problem!! Flash forward to Christmas...a year and a half later!!! Some friends and I decided that we would be festive for a Holiday get together. We put red and green food coloring in our hair and had a blast. That night, when I attempted to wash the food coloring out of my hair (which I was assured before I did it that it would "wash right out" I realized that it wasn't!! Instead, it faded to a nice lime green/hot pink combo!!! AHHHHHH!!! My poor mom even tried to use laundry detergent (it could work, right?) to get it out. A trip to the salon and 8 HOURS later, my hair had been bleached more than Marilyn's and recolored to bring it back to the dark blonde that I loved. The hairdresser said that the Sun-In had probably destroyed my hair follicles and that is why the food coloring took so well. The moral of the story, kids...friends don’t let friends put Sun-In or food coloring in their hair!!! I might give this stuff a try, though (glutton for punishment). It might give me an extra week or so before I have to go back to the stylist. I’ll keep it in mind for next summer. Thanks Kate!!!!
Additional alo sun comment! I was also lucky enough to be able to try the alo sun 'after sun restorative creme-gel’!The directions say to apply liberally to face, hands, and body as often as needed, particularly after contact with sun or elements, and concentrating on areas of greatest exposure. The product says it is “the only after sun corrective product that counteracts dry, sun-and pollutant-damaged skin by reversing the two primary causes of premature again: damaged DNA and dehydrations. This advanced BioActiftm Complex accelerates skin’s nature repair mechanism, actually mends DNA and hydrates by trapping moisture molecules inside cells, reversing environmental effects today and protecting from future damage tomorrow.” With this deluxe description in mind I couldn’t wait to try this crème! I don’t think I have ever come across another cream that talked about damaged DNA! I love the fragrance of the cream - it was a complete surprise! It was one of those things where I rubbed some on my hand and had to keep smelling my hand for the next hour or two to remind myself that I still just love the fragrance! It’s very very feminine! It’s almost like a perfume. So it might be too potent for some but it makes me feel soft and girly. I’ll have to try the entire tube on one of my sun damaged areas on one of my arms and see if I notice a difference between the two arms when the product is completely gone!

Sorry I wrote the comment in the wrong section!

The sun-in made your hair very porous. You're hair's cuticles were opened and never were closed back up, so that's why your hair absorbed the green and red.

I totally know what you mean about the white blonde slowly turning into a terribly ugly yellow brassy blonde. I don't think I'd ever try this just because I'm so weird about what I put on my blonde, it's so easy to mess is up while so hard to keep the platinum. I use purple shampoo called Shimmer Lights to tone out that yellow. It works wonders!

Can you use this and chemically treat your hair with highlights as well? I know there are risks of hair damage when you do that using Sun-In. My friend's hair actually started smoking in the salon once and when they asked if she had used Sun-In, she said yes. Apparently, there's a weird chemical reaction.

sun ins are not a good idea.. haha.. i used it once in elementary and yea NO.. never again
My sister used to use Sun In and it made her hair fall out... I'm a natural blonde so a little lemon juice works for me!
