SEPHORA STILL SURPRISE? MONDAYS WITH MEG!
Meg here, o.k. as you can see from my picture I love Sephora. I mean, c'mon who doesn't love Sephora? Husbands/boyfriends may not but I'm pretty positive Mastercard and Visa say a "thank-you" every billing statement. Oh yeah, I also run a makeup site and we also do every Saturday at Sephora with the fabulous Katie. She is an insider that breaks the popular and greatest Sephora finds. She's also probably going to want to throttle me after reading this post (LOVE YOU KATIE.)
Anyhow, you know when something gets on my nerves I'm really great about ignoring it.HA! Katies post from 2 Saturdays "Au Revoir Bourjois" bummed me out. Basically she wrote that Bourjois is a great line but Sephora has outgrown it so they are phasing it out, good news? Everything 30% off.
Back in the early (or rather) my early Sephora days, I loved how I could always find new, underground and awesome smaller boutique brands. Too Faced, The Balm, Scott Barnes, Bourjois~Stuff I couldn't find at either the Drugstore or at Bloomies cosmetic floor.
By having the fortunate experience of Megsmakeup.com I've gotten to love even more undergrounder's Cat Cosmetics, Liptini and Diane Brill are a few finds I treasure. Here's my beef, is it me or is Sephora starting to phase out so many little guys they're slowing starting to resemble my department store cosmetic floor more and more?
I'm wondering if to find these undiscovered gems it's going to be the comeback of the beauty supply store? I guess it was bound to happen, as with any growing company, it's going to look to streamline and make sku's, inventory and major brands a priority since they're brigging in the big bucks.
Maybe I'm being a little bit harsh but I'm not "oohing" and "aahing" with new discoveries as much as I used to. Also, what's going to happen to these great makeup companies if they don't have the name "Dior"? Who is going to showcase them?
Is it just me or are you makeup mavens noticing this as well?

Target is supposed to start carrying Bourjous, which is technically a drugstore line outside of the U.S. Also, Target will be carrying a new lower end line of Jemma Kidd make-up (JK by Jemma Kidd), surprisingly it's around MAC pricing. P.S. Can we have a Target column... I spend hours in there finding all kinds of great stuff (have you seen their work-out gear? Or their awesome deals on Ritter Sport marzipan?). Getting back on topic, I don't understand why Sephora bothers carrying some of the dept. store lines (esp. the ones that have GWPs) I would prefer more hard to find European & Asian brands & artisan created perfumes. Oh and they need to beef up the beauty insider program, I practically pay rent at Sephy (like the rest of you I would imagine) getting a dinky "deluxe" sample every time I spend $100 (like once a month & I'm a "poor" college student!) is kind of insulting.
Yes, indeed, I have noticed that the wonderful little companies that do things so well are being phased out. I miss Scott Barnes, I am prepared to miss Napoleon Perdis soon. I will miss Bourjois. Why is Clinique in there? It is available EVERYWHERE--in every department store. Keep the smaller lines and forget the Cliniques of this world.Barbra
It bums me out too that it's getting harder and harder for smaller companies to get a piece of the action. I think, in a purely logistical and economical sense, as Sephora has grown larger and more widespread in the U.S. they've been forced to move towards brands that are able to produce and distribute on a widespread level and had to part ways with those that couldn't. I also think (know) that the insides of Sephora have changed with some key departures and the newer entourage is perhaps not as loyal to the fundamentals with which Sephora was estabalished in the U.S. And as for that picture, Miss Mega, YOWZA!

Couldn't agree more. The only upside to Clinique, Lancome, etc at Sephora is there is no hard sell. I can play and pick up what I want when I want. On the other hand, I love, love, love finding the newer or cult brands at Sephora and if Sephora isn't going to champion these brands, then I will start to look elsewhere. I wouldn't mind if Sephora offered the Estee Lauder and Lancome brands online only and kept the store merchandise fresh and spontaneous. Yes, I know if I want Smashbox or Philosophy then I can go to Sephora. If Sephora is looking to tempt the buyer into an impulse buy, I am not sure that another Lancome juicy tube is the way to go. Calvin Klein recently released a new cosmetics line, but I haven't seen it in any of the Sephoras I have been in lately, including two on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.
Meg- could you be any more stunning? Seriously? I'm not kidding, that picture lit up my whole day when I saw it- not easy to do at 6:30 AM when you're not a morning person! I often look to Meg's whenever I'm trying a new product that I'm not sure about; and I can't tell you how many brands I've been introduced to simply through Meg's: Cat Cosmetics, Boscia, Caudalie, TheBalm... and don't even get me started on the perfumes I've gotten the chance to try as a reviewer! it's even helped me find a few of my HG products, like my beloved Mint Julep Face Masque! I do agree that Sephora seems to be phasing out little guys like Bourjois and Napoleon Perdis, but they're also bringing in newer but still lesser-known brands: Tricia Sawyer, Nude Skincare, nvey eco... even though Kevyn Aucoin is a big name in cosmetics, I still hadn't heard of him until he showed up on Sephora.com. Still, I hope they don't phase out all the current smaller brands: I like TheBalm, on10, Pop Beauty, Sugar, Hard Candy... the list goes on.
You ladies are too kind! I did some photos last week with Elisabeth Caren and it was all her work! Smoke and mirrors!Maybe there could be a Sephora off shoot or something where they have indie or boutique brands? HMMM
Meg, you are absolutely stunning in this photo, wowza! I love the discovery of great indie beauty brands, and have discovered many of my favorites (Alison Raffaele, The Balm, Suki) right here at Megs. Many, many thanks to all of you who contribute here.
Bluce43, my sentiments are with yours and Meg's! My Sephora has not been open long, but I have been more than enough to make up for lost time! I too was puzzled when I went in and saw an entire wall for Clinique, Dior, etc. As many times as I've been there, I've NEVER seen anyone shop off that wall! I can only hope that with each GEM that they discontinue, another will find it's home at the "beloved" Sephora. Of course, in a few weeks I could hop over across the street to the grand opening of Ulta! Sorry Katie! Just keeping my options open;)
I agree with both, I love to find the new smaller lines, and after being a tester here I have fallen in love with so many..smashbox, cat, tarte, Nars, HardCandy....and I am sure there are more, so I hope they will keep these and be open to new ones too. I feel like I can go to Macys or Nordstorms if I want Mac or Clinique...And the other thing I agree with is Meg looks HOT! I always loved you in red!! Beautiful pic lady!!
INCREDIBLE pic!!! Lady in red indeed!!!I totally agree with your assesment and the reviews above: I always loved that I could go online or stop ina Sephora and find "something" that I had read about but that no one else owned.BUT...it's hard and veryexpensive for a "small company" to compete in terms of advertising and exposure although so do a great job andI wonder of Sephora is also feeling the pressure of "this economy" in that it has to give floor space to those name that havethe "brand recognition" in order to keep their numbers up?ALWAYS a fan of the "indie" company,I shall continue to hunt down the lesser-knowns but truly hope Sephora doesn'tbecome just another place to shop as well.I am currently concerned about "Besame" although they clain a "re-formulation" is taking place...Tarte has thrivedas has Hard Candy,2 companies started on a small scale...it's really a game of numbers and the market is floodedwith produt-lines currently...the cream WILL rise to the top and I hope the powers that be at Sephora read hereand understand that we LOVE them just as they were/are!
Certainly, this is exactly the reason why I count on MEGSMAKEUP.com and the beauty reviews of the community on this site. How else would I discover new products or learn their merits.Nowadays (is that actually a word? - crap, I sound like my mother), we are all so "marketed to" that its hard to really tell what is real, what really works and what is just another neatly packaged bottle of snake oil.Sephora is just another distribution channel that is equally susceptible to the ebbs and flows of the marketplace (ie, supply and demand) as any other business. They are doing what they have to do to make a buck just like anyone else. As consumers, we have to use whatever outlet we can to be heard -- which is why I am hanging out here and taking a few minutes to add my two cents (and enjoying a nice glass of Penfold's Shiraz Cabernet btw). MEGSMAKEUP.com is the perfect platform for people who care about products to share their opinions and be influential. Hopefully a marketing executive over there at Sephora is paying attention and reading this RIGHT NOW!!!Love you Meg... you are rad and thank you for creating this place for lovers of lipstick (all shades, even coral).
I totally agree with everyone. My local Sephora is in a mall with Dillards, Macys, and Nordstrom. Do we really need 4 locations to buy Clinique, Dior, and Lancome? I don't think so. I wish Sephora would pay more attention to the surrounding businesses and the communities where they're located. I think they would be better able to fill in gaps within the local market. I would love it if they would start stocking the entire line of TheBalm or another more eco-friendly cosmetics line, which I think would sell really well in a super green city like Austin. Could they also stock more unusual fragrances that I can't find on the massive perfume wall at Nordstrom? Way to go, Meg, for bringing this up, I'd been having the same thoughts recently. Nice pic. Kind of made me blush and have to look around the office when I opened it up. :)
first of all stop looking so hot meg!!!!!!!!!!!!just kidding-you look awesome-you are our fearless leader! if you were homely i guess we would be scared to take your advice! lol! i practically pay rent at sephora also. i hate their little "prizes" it seems like they should have a better loyalty program.i do appreciate being able to "play" without pesky salespeople.i am so sad about losing some of the cool indie brands to clinique of all things!!! i am not 16 i don't want to look at clinique! i am going to new york in a few weeks and there is a 2 story sephora down the street from the hotel. i will check everything out! i will visit space nk again-i see they have a new location in the city. and i am googling looking for new places in manhattan to find obscure cosmetics. any ideas girls? i need to go there in person and pay cash so the hubster doesn't realize that i have an addiction! my fellow ariline crewmembers go to plays or something cultural and they look at me like i am crazy when i say i am shopping for obscure makeup! they just don't understand!carol b
I like Meg's idea... an indie off-shoot version of Sephora would be awesome! I am not business inclined (I'm a horrible sales person) at all, but I know a girl who's name starts with K and ends with -atie who is about to start getting her MBA...
I agree with everything you say Meg. But I still have to give them some credit because, some of the tried and true brands are still maintaining the ability to make me think (exclamation points included) COOL!!!!!!
Katie
I completely, wholeheartedly agree with everything said here. It's always bugged me that Sephora carried Clinique, etc. If I wanted Clinique, I could stay in my small hometown and shop there. I want new, interesting, fabulous products from smaller, lesser known brands that are up and coming and making their way in the beauty biz. So Dear Sephora, drop the tired old department store makeup that everyone else has and please give us the bright, shiny, new, fun stuff that nobody else does. I promise I (and probably all the other Megheads) will spend the money to make it worth it to you!
